Thirty-five dead after floor of Indian temple collapses
Worshippers in Indore fell into communal water source as they gathered to mark Ram Navami

At least 35 people have died after the floor of a Hindu temple collapsed in Indore, central India, plunging them into a well.

It has emerged that the floor which covered the stepwell – a stair-lined communal water source – consisted only of tiles laid over a metal grille.

An investigation had been launched into the tragedy and the families of the dead people would be compensated, Narottam Mishra, the home minister of Madhya Pradesh state said.

A large number of devotees, mainly women and children, were present at the temple on Thursday for the Hindu festival of Ram Navami. Police said the flimsy floor gave way under their weight. The well had about 25 feet (7.6 metres) of water in it when they fell.

Television footage showed emergency workers using ropes and ladders to reach those trapped. Other videos showed the caved-in floor and mangled steel bars, and police using ropes to seal the area.

“I saw some people falling with their hands still folded in prayer, looking bewildered,” said an eyewitness who survived because she was standing in a corner.

Officials say rescue operations are continuing.

“We have a large team of rescuers, supplemented by army personnel,” Indore commissioner Pawan Sharma said. “We have managed to rescue 18 people who are in hospital.”

The Times of India has reported seeing documents showing that the Indore municipal authority ordered the removal of the makeshift floor in January because it was dangerous but backed down when local Hindus protested.

A similar tragedy occurred last November in Gujarat, western India, when 135 people – mostly women and children – fell to their deaths in the Morbi River below.

At least 36 people have been arrested in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal after violent clashes disrupted a religious procession, a senior state police official said on Friday.

A few vehicles were set ablaze and some shops were ransacked on Thursday as warring groups threw stones at each other in a neighbourhood of the industrial city of Howrah before police and security forces secured the area, the official said.

Skirmishes continued on Friday in Howrah’s Shibpur district, where Hindus and Muslims have lived together for generations, said the official, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak to media.

Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal’s chief minister, said the clashes began after a procession celebrating the Hindu festival of Ram Navami on Thursday diverted from its route to an unauthorised area.

The senior police official said stones were hurled at the procession as it passed through Shibpur.

Banerjee said there were lapses on the part of the police and strong action would be taken in the matter.

State police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Suvendu Adhikari, a leader of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, said at least 10 party workers had been injured in the clashes and that police had stood by as “spectators” during the violence.

Meanwhile, in Vadodara city, in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police arrested 22 people on Friday for rioting and stone pelting during a Ram Navami procession on Thursday. Six police personnel and five other people were injured in the violence, police said.

“A large mob resorted to stone pelting and damaged public property, including some vehicles in the Fatehpura area of the city,” M.L. Ninama, joint commissioner of Vadodara police, told Reuters.

What more can be expected from a state like West Bengal. It is corrupt to the core, starting from politicians to police.

The Chief Minister herself said the other day in Bengali which losely translates - "Ram Navami possesion should not be carried out in Muslim areas during Ramzan".

What does she meant by Muslim areas?

I thought anyone in India can go anywhere?

The very next day after her speech riots happen when Rama Navami possesion people were openly attacked by Ismlaists in Howrah. Not only that but even media was targetted in open tele.

I would be interested to hear brother pillionrider view on this? Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday asserted communal tensions during Ram Navami festivities at Sasaram and Bihar Sharif towns were triggered by some people indulging in "gadbad" (mischief) and rejected the BJP's charge that it indicated poor law and order situation in the state.

Interacting with media persons here on Saturday, Mr Kumar also made light of Union Home Minister Amit Shah canceling his tour of Sasaram in view of riots, remarking, "I don't know why he was coming and I don't understand why he decided not to come".

"Communal tensions during Ram Navami festivities at Sasaram and Bihar Sharif are disturbing. Such incidents happened for the first time in the area. It's not natural....We know that some people are indulging in "gadbad" (mischief) and are trying to disrupt communal harmony in the state. We will not allow this to happen," the chief minister said.

He said police officials have been instructed to identify those who are indulging in mischief and to "take strict action against them".

Normalcy has been restored in both the places though senior officers are camping in the affected areas by way of caution and security forces Hhavebeen deployed in the area, Mr Kumar said.

The state police have so far arrested 45 people in connection with communal riots at Sasaram and Bihar Sharif that erupted during the Ram Navami festivities. Vehicles, houses and shops were torched and several people injured in communal flare-ups reported in both towns. In Sasaram, district administration ordered imposition of Section 144 on Friday afternoon after re-eruption of clashes, which first broke out the previous evening.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has cancelled his tour of Sasaram on Sunday where prohibitory orders are already in place. Interacting with journalists, state BJP chief Samrat Choudhary, said Mf Shah, who will be reaching Patna on Saturday evening, will address party workers in Nawada Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday as per schedule, even as he squarely blamed the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar for the cancellation of the function at Sasaram, organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of Emperor Asoka.

When asked about the cancellation of Amit Shah's visit to Sasaram, Mr Kumar said, "I have no idea about this. I don't know why he was coming and I don't understand why he decided not to come. As far as the law and order situation in the state is concerned, it's perfectly alright".

I typed out a detailed response with my views on this and have deleted it because, Why. Why should I offer you the courtesy of an issue-based balanced view when you guys don't. It's now time to speak the language you people speak. If you are not going to be fair, don't expect decency and fairness in return.

Not that I am familiar with Indian politics but know enough of sectarian violence in NI to know that if the CM wanted to reduce tensions by not allowing a hindu march thru what I understand a muslim populated area which is what I think she means by Muslim area then I would say she is being fair and pragmatic leader.

Well, we are having such violent activities across the world. Its a clash of ideas.

Should Muslims be stopped from marching through a non muslim populated area?

Should Muslims be stopped from marching through a non muslim populated area?

Should be looked at on a case by case basis, a report compiled on likelihood of trouble, the reason for march, so many different factors so a straight yes or no answer is impossible.

Of course if one desires sectarian violence, yes let the march go ahead.

Bro I am not expecting decency from you but why you are calling me unfair poster? I always call spade a spade and say things as I see it. I am opinionated and don't shy away from things. Yes its a different thing that what you see as 6 from your end, I see it as 9 from mine. That is called as difference in opinion.

Since you praised Mamata Banerjee in the past and regularly quote Mahua Moitra, I was expecting a rebuttal from you. But its okay, if you want to stay way from this thread as it might not serve the agenda.

BTW, Mohua used to work here in Canary Wharf as banker in one of the firms I previously worked. Good to see she went back to India and made a career for herself as MP by getting a lot of support from you liberals. :)

Because no other country has a 200mn plus"minorities population.

200 million is more than the populations of all European countries.

Waste bengal is a messed up place. Who is native Muslim and who is Bangladeshi is extremely hard to tell. Government is corrupt and so are the border police.

UP, Bihar and Bengal are the biggest liabilities on India. They combine to form 50% of India’s population, but contribute nothing for the development of the country.

Tense calm prevailed on Saturday after two days of communal violence in four Indian states that began during Hindu religious festivities, in which at least two people were killed, according to local media reports

Several dozens of people were arrested after communal clashes erupted in the states of Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Gujarat on Thursday and Friday during the Hindu festival of Ram Navmi which commemorates the birth of the Hindu deity Rama.

Deaths were reported in West Bengal and Maharashtra, as several injuries were reported in other states.

The majority of these incidents occurred while Hindu groups were marching through Muslim-majority areas shouting slogans.

In Howrah city in the eastern state of West Bengal, violence broke out between two groups on Thursday night, as the Ram Navami procession passed through minority community areas.

Several vehicles were set on fire and shops were attacked, resulting in numerous injuries during the sporadic clashes between the two groups that lasted until Friday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee blamed the right-wing Hindu nationalist ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for orchestrating the communal agitation and targeting one “minority community” with the support of "goons," India Today reported.

“They are the enemies of the people of the country,” she was quoted as saying by the daily.

She claimed that “they (the attackers) were hired by the BJP and were carrying guns and petrol bombs. They first attacked people from the minority communities.”

However, Suvendu Adhikari, a senior BJP leader, accused the police of being a "silent spectator."

According to the media outlet, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar claimed that the violence was "orchestrated" by Mamata Banerjee in order to "retain her Muslim votes."

On Saturday, Howrah Commissioner of Police Praveen Tripathi told a news conference that 38 people have been arrested for violent clashes in the city.

In another eastern state, Bihar, police arrested 45 people for arson and violence.

Over 100 more were also arrested in different states for their alleged links with the violent incidents.

India also witnessed widespread communal clashes during last year's Ram Navami celebrations.

So the argument is that because 200m of minorities, it's ok to have them be killed because no one else has this issue.

Huh?

Minorities are allowed to attack religious processions of majority?

Eh? Lets brush around the fact that the Hindutva mob deliberately diverted from their authorised route shall we?

So that they could antagonise, riot violently and try to burn down Muslim properties.

The Muslims threw stones in order to defend themselves as the police sat by idly allowing the Hindutva mobs free rein in their destruction.

Why taking a hindu procession through a muslim population area is likelihood of trouble?

If the same is applied, muslim processions should be nowhere near non muslim areas.

Let the law be applied uniformly.

More than a dozen people were arrested in India’s Bihar on Sunday as raids continued in the state following two days of communal riots, according to local media.

Communal clashes were reported in West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Gujrat on Thursday and Friday during the Hindu festival of Ram Navmi which commemorates the birth of the Hindu deity Ram.

Local media said vehicles, houses as well as shops were set on fire and several people were injured.

On Saturday, ANI reported that fresh violence erupted in two to three places in Biharsharif in which one person was killed.

Okay, so the Hindutva procession deliberately takes a detour into the detour Muslim neighbourhood to provoke the community and burn their properties, so why wouldn't the people do something to protect themselves?

Marches are sensitive things even in first world countries. Which is why you wouldnt see Trump Supporters hold processions in Inner City Black neighborhoods.

A BJP MLA was injured in violence that broke out today in West Bengal's Hooghly while the party was taking out a procession themed on Ram Navami.
Earlier this week too, clashes had erupted between two groups in Bengal's Howrah during a Ram Navami procession.

BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh participated at the 'Ram Navami shobha yatra' today. The injured MLA, Biman Ghosh, has been hospitalised.

The police said local internet services have been snapped for the next 24 hours and large gatherings have been banned.

Visuals of the procession show people running for safety amid stone-throwing.

The Ram Navami procession played loud music with DJ and some people carried swords in front of a mosque, police sources told NDTV, adding the rally started late and beyond the permitted time.

The violence started after rumours spread that a mosque had been targeted, the sources said.

Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose said those responsible for the violence will be charged tonight and jailed.

This is the key point which has been missed by some.

Its clearly a deliberate act of provaction to divert the 'procession' in order to spread hate towards another community.

Its been years of violence met towards Muslims and Christians in this country by the majority.

I wrote a few years back, India is a ticking time bomb. I hope Im wrong but sadly the future will become even worse for the minorities.

I hope the peaceful Hindus will stand up against the extremists but struggle to see any condemnation from them.

Bulldozer At Indore Temple After 36 Deaths, Crackdown On Illegal Structure
A large contingent of municipal and police officials reached the temple on Monday morning to ensure the action was carried out without any disturbance.

Days after a tragic accident that killed 36 people here, more than five bulldozers rolled into the Beleshwar Mahadev temple in Madhya Pradesh's Indore today to demolish illegal construction. A large contingent of municipal and police officials reached the temple on Monday morning to ensure the action was carried out without any disturbance.
Personnel from four police stations have been deployed to prevent any possible resistance. The Deputy Municipal Commissioner, District Magistrate, and other officials are also present at the spot.

The tragedy, in which some families lost more than one member, could have been averted had the Indore Municipal Corporation acted on complaints filed by residents, an NDTV investigation showed. The temple area that collapsed was an illegal structure and the Indore Municipal Corporation had marked the cover of the stepwell for demolition last year, but they backed down after the temple trust warned them religious sentiments would be hurt.

The stepwell roof broke due to the weight of the crowds on Ram Navami. A havan was being performed when the incident happened.

Managed by a private trust, the temple is located at Sneh Nagar, one of the oldest residential colonies in Indore.

The 200-year-old stepwell was covered with four iron girders, a thin layer of concrete and tiles incapable of holding the weight of the crowd that gathered to offer puja on Ram Navami.

How did you come to this conclusion?

India's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) showed an "anti-India agenda" by saying that last week's violent clashes during a Hindu religious festival targeted the Muslim community.

Indian was responding to the OIC's statement earlier on Tuesday which called on Indian authorities to take firm action against those involved in the violence.

Clashes in cities across several states last week disrupted religious processions during the Hindu festival of Ram Navami.

In Howrah city, in the eastern state of West Bengal, vehicles were set ablaze and shops ransacked as warring groups threw stones at each other.

At least 36 people were arrested in Howrah and 22 in Vadodara in western India's Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, following the clashes. Local media reported at least two deaths were caused by the violence.

"The OIC General Secretariat denounces such provocative acts of violence and vandalism, which are a vivid manifestation of mounting Islamophobia and systemic targeting of the Muslim community in India," the 57-member group based in Jeddah said.

India's foreign ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, condemned the OIC's statement.

"This is one more example of their communal mindset and anti-India agenda. OIC only does its reputation damage by being consistently manipulated by anti-India forces," Bagchi said in a statement on Twitter.

Concerns over violence against Muslims in India

The Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson also expressed Pakistan’s “deep concerns” over the “alarming rise” in violence against Muslims in India.

Communal riots broke out in several states of the neighbouring country last week during the Hindu festival of Ram Navmi, which commemorates the birth of the Hindu deity Ram.

More than a dozen people were injured after clashes between Hindus and Muslims were reported in at least nine states of India. Local media said vehicles, houses as well as shops were set on fire.

In her briefing today, the FO spokesperson said: “The terrifying rise in Islamophobic and hateful acts against Muslims in India is a consequence of the pursuit of a majoritarian Hindutva agenda and anti-Islam and anti-Muslim rhetoric rife in Indian politics.”

She also called on India to take “demonstrable steps” to curb the rising tide of Islamophobia, to provide protection to Muslims for practising their faith and account those responsible for such hateful acts.
