Army-Cops Clash In J&K's Kupwara, Case Against 16 Including 3 Lt Colonels

Jammu and Kashmir police have filed a case against 16 army soldiers, including three officers, for assaulting policemen at a police station in Kupwara district. Five police personnel, including the Station House Officer, were injured in the incident, official sources said.

A video purportedly showing the soldiers storming inside the police station late Tuesday evening was widely shared on social media.

The army has denied assaulting the cops and termed it an incident of "minor differences".

The reports of altercation between police and army personnel and beating of police personnel are mis-founded and incorrect. Minor differences between the police personnel and a territorial army unit on an operational matter have been amicably resolved," said a defence spokesperson.

In the FIR, police have named 16 soldiers, including three officers holding the rank of Lt Colonel. They have been booked on charges of rioting, attempt to murder, and the kidnapping of policemen at the police station.

On Tuesday, the cops raided the house of a territorial army soldier at Batpora village in Kupwara as part of their probe into a case, according to reports. Later around 9:40 pm, the army soldiers swooped down on the police station and attacked them, said the First Information Report (FIR).

A huge number of armed and uniformed personnel of 160 Territorial Army, led by the three officers, unauthorisedly entered the police station, it said. The FIR said the troops, "without any provocation, severely attacked the staff and officers present at the police station with rifle butts, kicks and sticks."

"The information was immediately conveyed to senior police officers who rushed to the police station to rescue them. Upon seeing the arrival of police units and senior police officers, the alleged personnel and officers of 160 Territorial Army led by Lieutenant Colonel Ankit Sood, Raju Chauhan, and Nikhil brandished their weapons and snatched the mobile phones of the injured personnel and SHO PS Kupwara Inspector Mohammad Ishaq," reads the FIR.

The troops have also been accused of kidnapping the head constable. "While fleeing, they (army men) abducted MHC Ghulam Rasool and absconded from the spot," the FIR said.

The injured cops, including the SHO, have been shifted to a hospital for treatment. They are now stated to be stable.

On point, the law will take it's place. Let the story develop, and investigations take it's place. Bizarre incident though!

Indian army intensifies oppression in occupied Kashmir

The Indian army has begun equipping its personnel with the newly designed "Asmi" machine pistol, significantly raising concerns about the safety of the region's population in a disturbing escalation of violence against civilians in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The "Asmi" is a hybrid weapon, functioning both as a pistol and a sub-machine gun, designed with the collaboration of India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

According to Kashmir Media Service, the weapon is specifically intended for use in house raids and other military operations, exacerbating fears of further rights abuses in the region. As the Indian military continues its oppressive actions, calls from civil society for a ban on the weapon have grown louder, citing the risks it poses to the already vulnerable population.

The introduction of the "Asmi" comes amid a broader political context in which tensions over Kashmir's status continue to simmer. In a significant political development, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370, which granted the region special autonomy. The resolution demands the revival of the constitutional provisions that had provided Jammu and Kashmir with a degree of self-rule before the Indian government revoked it on August 5, 2019. Despite strong opposition from BJP members, the resolution was supported by a majority of lawmakers, with National Conference leader and Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Singh Choudhary, presenting the motion.

Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed heated scenes on Monday as legislators across party lines condemned the alleged police highhandedness during protests over the recovery of two tribal youths' bodies in Kulgam district.

As soon as the House convened, legislators raised the issue of the death of Showkat Ahmad, son of Mohammad Sadiq Bajad, a resident of Chata Doonda in Rajouri, whose body was recovered from Vaishow Nallah in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Sunday. Ahmad had gone missing along with two others nearly a month ago.

Choudhary Muhammad Akram, an MLA, accused a police officer of assaulting a woman protester during demonstrations in Qazigund and demanded stern action.

“This House must condemn the police’s actions and initiate strict measures,” he said.

Tensions escalated when National Conference (NC) legislators Javed Choudhary, Mian Mehar Ali, Javaid Mirchal, and Zaffar Ali Khatan attempted to storm the well of the House. They were promptly restrained by Marshals amid rising tempers.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather intervened, assuring members that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had taken note of the matter and would address their concerns.

“The House must be assured that justice will be served,” Rather said.

National Conference’s Nazir Ahmad Gurezi and PDP legislators Waheed Parra and Mehar Ali joined in demanding accountability, calling for a time-bound probe into the alleged police excesses and the mysterious disappearances.

Parra raised concern over the growing trend of missing persons, particularly among the Gujjar community, and stressed the need for transparency.

“This is not an isolated case. We need answers, and we need them now,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) President and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone also condemned the incident.

“Images of a police officer kicking the female relatives of two youths who died in Kulgam are utterly disdainful,” he said.
