What's new

Poor start to PSL 3: What can Lahore Qalandars do to turn it around?

In replacement draft there were no good batsmen left so they had to pick Devcic to replace Mathews. They are not allowed to replace Lynn unless another a new replacement draft happens, that's why they called Ramdin.

That's incorrect, they had the option to sign a replacement player for Lynn but opted to call up Ramdin early.

Regardless, the fact of the matter is that they did not sign any proper batsman in the draft and their planning was garbage.

They signed Lynn as a priority but he's another top-order batsman. The only stabiliser that they opted for (initially) was Matthews (supplementary) but he was always going to be available for only a short period due to Ind/SL/BD tri-series, before he was completely ruled out due to injury.

They were looking at Jessie Ryder and Dawid Malan as replacements for Lynn but didn't bother replacing him.

they need to replace Chris Lynn - with Darcy Short

Pakistan fans need to stop saying this fantasy.

He didn't make himself avaliable for the original draft so can't be selected. Furthmore he is contracted to play in the shield even if he was avaliable for the PSL, he will pick shield cricket over the PSL.

PSL isn't the be all and end all for every overseas player.

Ryder would have been a good replacement.
Malan would have been an even better replacement.

Im curious, why was Malan not retained by Zalmi this season? Correct me if I am wrong, but he isn't involved with the England ODI team right now is he?

Malan would have been fine as well. Ryder is an opener so that's why I was just highlighting him more.

With Stokes avaliable , Malan wasn't needed in the ODI squad. I don't understand why PZ didn't retain him. They haven't kicked on from last year at all in terms of new players.

Very surprised. Malan was tremendous last season for Zalmi.

Harris and Hafeez bat in similar positions to Malan. That could have been a reason why he wasn't retained . But in T20s I think Malan is better than both. He has 4 T20 50s in his last 5 T20 internationals.

No contest between mediocre T20 players like Haris and Hafeez and an international class batsman like Malan. Zalmi got it very wrong there if thats the case.

Malan's recent knocks against NZ in NZ were impressive. Very good player.

Right now what they can actually do is assign a role to each and every player in the line up. Give them a backup strategy to get them out of the dog house situation. The openers should focus on building the platform for the rest of the team to build on. I wouldn’t mind a score of 60-70 in the first 10 overs. The rest of the team should prioritise not missing the singles. Wickets in hand and a score of 100-110 in the first 15-16 overs mean that they can go all out gung ho in the last 4 overs with no two ways about it. If they can put up a score of 140 or more, then I believe that MCCullum type of captaincy will really help them win a few close games.

ok just to add, I even sent one of the LQ owners Dawid Malan's phone number when Chris Lynn was injured.

They need to get rid of Brendon McCullum. His influence has ruined the franchise. He is as brainless as Afridi, maybe even worse. Has a one track approach towards the game of cricket and is not a good thinker of the game. He has tried to instill an attacking approach from 1-11 and has asked his batsmen to go out there with the mindset of scoring a 17 ball 50.

In these conditions, brainless attack will always lead you to doom. Just take a leaf out of Misbah's book and learn how to play in these conditions. McCullum succeeded with the NZ team because he had sensible players in Williamson and Ross Taylor who consolidated in the middle overs. At Lahore, he has no such influence so instead of finding someone who can bat 20 overs, he has instead instructed all of his batsmen to go gung-ho from the start as if he wants 250 every time they bat.

I have no sympathy for Fawad Rana because he should've removed McCullum and Aaqib Javed after seeing his side perform hopelessly for 2 seasons. If he expected things will change with the same setup and more or less the same players, he is as much to blame. Karachi were quick and decisive in shipping out Gayle, bringing in Afridi, employing a young captain and they look a different team. Lahore has to take smart decisions otherwise they will end up 6th.

I personally never rated Mccullam all that highly as captain, its not like NZ won anything major under him. Under him NZ were mostly good at home in their conditions but even then as captain his over aggressive captaincy had flaws where he unnecessarily lost games because of it.

Seriously why didnt they contact Malan, they are really struggling without a proper orthodox batsman, while Malan also can play some unorthodox shots.

This is really poor on part of the LQ management.

They already have the most expensive team, Malan is available but looks like they don't want to pick him

How come LQ become the most expensive? Wasn't it KK?
Malan would be be perfect fit in this mercurial middle order.

They could afford only 19 players with the allocated budget during draft while as other teams went for 20 players and still had some bucks left, after budget PCB allowed teams to pick one more player i.e 21 players and purse was increased by $25000 and lq was able to get 2 more guys and complete squad

So it's mismanagement here as well. :13:

So is Fawad Rana still persisting with Aqib and Mccullam :))

Aaqib is the worst coach and selector and cant help at a good level. Fawad is wasting time on this guy. The person who never picked Ronchi and ended up picking Ramdin and also gave him 5 matches, his mental health is questionable. Had he picked Ronchi last year LQ must have won many matches
