This image of a confident Brummie woman staring in the face of a right-wing EDL supporter has gone viral.

The picture has been shared more than 10,000 times on social media, after it was taken at the English Defence League’s Birmingham demo on Saturday afternoon.

Posting on Twitter, Piers Morgan called it his ‘photo of the week’, adding: “Enraged EDL racist stared down by amused, contemptuous Asian woman.”

And in a tweet shared almost 3,000 times, Birmingham MP Jess Phillips wrote: “Who looks like they have the power here? The real Brummy on the left, or the EDL who migrated for the day to our city and failed to assimilate.”

In the picture, a policeman can be seen attempting to restrain the man - who is dressed in a baseball cap and EDL t-shirt - the smiling woman has her hands in her pockets.

The image was taken in Centenary Square.

Twitter users heaped praise on the unknown woman.

Verity Milligan wrote: “Yes! Strength and fearlessness personified.”

Tracey Fergie said: “No place for disgusting prejudice. This lady is a hero.”

And Janice Robinson wrote: “That young woman has composure, bravery and a sense of humour. We love you. An iconic photo.”

Around 100 flag waving EDL protestors gathered in the city centre yesterday.

But more than triple that flocked to Birmingham’s Central Mosque, where officials hosted a ‘best of British’ tea party.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson who was at the event said: “Today Birmingham showed the real British values of tolerance, unity and good humour.

“People of all faiths came together over a cup of tea and cake to show that we’ve got much more in common than divides us.

“Far more ordinary Brummies were at the Central Mosque today than were at the EDL’s protest.”

Originally earmarked to take place in Derby, the EDL demo was switched to Birmingham after the Westminster terror attack to highlight what the group describes as a ‘continued increase in Islamic terrorism’ linked to the city.

The rally was condemned by Birmingham’s political leaders in a cross-party statement.

Wow incredible stuff what an ICONIC image, absolutely POWERFUL.

That is basically me staring in the face of hostility from a manchesterian :yk Junaids

I am yet to figure out why on earth these EDL drunks keep returning to the second city in their little stinky flock, every time they get a spanking and leave in embarrassment :)))

To add to the OP, the photo was taken by @birminghammail photographer Darren Quinton.

The hatred is somewhat alarming not only in UK but in the world right now. Almost feels like globalization has failed.

She looks like a typical British Pakistani. Far too confident and full of herself. Probably got some sort of job as a left wing race relations advisor with the council. It's the sort of photo which will enrage US Pakistanis and earn secret admiration from PP's Indian contingent.

She looks anything but typical. Some emo goth.

Great photo. Outsiders don't know how chilled the city is in many parts.

EDL get far too much attention, 50/100 people shouldn't be allowed any coverage, just a good day out for them.

Globalization didn't fail. It failed the expectations of White people. This push-back is the response to that realisation!

They thought that selling the idea of FREE MOVEMENT of GOODS,WEALTH, KNOWLEDGE and PEOPLE aka GLOBALISATION, would help them sell everything they wanted to sell everywhere and make profits, get any resource they wanted to get without having to invade or conquer lands like they had to do in the past .

But what they didn't foresee was that, the people of the developing world would really latch on to the last two points I.E , Knowledge transfer and Migration. As I see it , it was fair play .

They promoted globalisation thinking it'd put them at an advantage. But once we figured out that , if we could gain access to their knowledge , we could apply them in our nations far more cheaply(due to cheaper costs and plentiful labour ) and far more effectively , we could make it work to our advantage . The same case with us moving to their land, using provisions they had set up , so that we, who are used to living our lives in hyper competitive, cut-throat, poorly rewarding circumstances, would be able to out-compete and out-acheive a lot of white people who were on average not used to this level of struggle and ruthless competition !

Can Mancs even manage hostility? Every time they get angry you can't do anything but laugh at their ridiculous Terry Christian accents and bizarrely misplaced sense of self-importance. Yeah we get it, you had a couple of decent bands back in the day, any town can do that when everybody is too lazy to get a proper job.

Look at Liverpool for proof.

Absolutely amazing post.

POTW.

I find these remarks to be quite racist. I'm assuming this is because she is slightly darker (what else could it be?) but Pakistanis can be darker hued as well.

dont know about the other but to me she didt have the pakistani look

and turns out i was correct. she is half bosnian

I thought she looked Indian too.

Leave colour...her face looks so Indian from that angle.

Anyways, great snap.

Im saying India is nowhere near Bosnia. Nice guess tho. :kapil

her facial features didnt look pakistani so i assumed indian outside of north india

tbh couldnt have ever guessed bosnia

I couldn't tell what she "was" from the picture, didn't see how it was relevant and nor did I remotely give a damn about that! but what I will tell you is this, she's a VINTAGE BRUMMIE LASS! and you know what that means don't ya! she is officially among a rare few on the planet (specifically the midlands in England) who are the most advanced human beings on earth as we can see evidently in this thread on all fronts really. So you can take your racist and narrow minded tendencies, turn them side ways, yeah go on! :mv

KingKhanWC these wealthy farm boys from the subcontinent should go out for once! maybe they'd get a bit of perspective and their critical/lateral thinking would improve; goodness me, such folk in general have such a narrow minded and limited outlook on life where things like colour, ascents and all the other superficial crap form the basis of how they begin to define folk.

I think it goes for the working classes too, it's a shame a lot of Asians haven't spent time mixing with different cultures. In Pakistan/India there aren't many people from different backgrounds to communicate with but in western nations there are plenty but many try to stay within their mix or even within their local communities. It's a bit like the EDL, who are ignorant of Muslims because most of them haven't talked to Muslims properly. This is one of the reaons I love being a Brummie, getting to know and having friends from various backgrounds/cultures. It's with this kind of exposure to one's life, racism, discrimination and fear of others who are different disappears.

Still a few will not pay attention to that and will point out the bad and how we are all self destructing specifically due to the diversity itself, and they say that having left the city to a dominant gorah area while they sit on a high horse; so secure, understanding and perfect :yk

When the Khan wants to become a Cooper. :yk

They're even worse than the EDL. At the least the EDL aren't confused who to hate on, esp those who are like themselves.

People love crying racist. There has been a proliferation in anthropology sites etc and even two people of exact skin colour can have very different origins. She's actually very light yet equally dark ... A bizarre convoy nonetheless

Talk about yourself . As an American Pakistani , I love her! . She is easy on the eyes too :)

What a great image that was.

She looks Indian/Pakistani from the first angle. The nose ring adds to the "desi" look. The other two pics, especially the 3rd one highlights her more eastern European features.

Saffiyah Khan interview with BBC Radio 4:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04...=social&ns_campaign=bbcnews&ns_source=twitter

"The image of local resident, Saffiyah Khan smiling at Ian Crossland at a recent English Defence League (EDL) protest in Birmingham has gone viral. She intervened when she witnessed another women wearing a headscarf being surrounded by a group of protestors. Jane speaks to her about the image and it's reaction. Saffiyah says, 'if I saw something happening to an EDL member in a situation where it was not fair or they were being intimidated for whatever reason, I'd happily step in."

Seems like a few people on here are very concerned that she look, Indian, Bengali, Bosnian or any other ethnicity other than Pakistani for some reason. I could understand it if she was white or black on had Chinese features. But no, none of those. Very strange.

It's very interesting that many folk who often highlight all the bad are not present, it just goes to show that their demonization of certain issues and people prevents them from appreciating the good because they'd rather see evil or it's what their eyes only allows them to see as it fits their line of thinking and no we can't be wrong can we on any level and have to win a petty argument for the sake of it even if all sense has been displaced given your false sense of pride and ego-maniac like nature.

What's your opinion on her cap?

They seem to be pretty ignorant from the below video, one always thinks such things don't happen in first world countries should be shown these videos to get an idea.

I found that absolutely shocking Captain, very very strange. Honestly, the origins of "what she looks like" was not on my mind on any level when the article was posted! did not expect a discussion to follow regarding whether she was Indian, Bengali, Bosnian etc is it possible that the EDL may have some foreign members to ?

So you are proud of her? I guess its lost in translation but from where i come from "full of herself" is taken in negative way.

Yes these are the British Pakistanis I identify with. Very much at home and radiating a superiority complex. (Obviously they are superior to racist chavs before anyone gets offended).

These are real Brits and along with myself and future generations influenced by me, we will be at the forefront of the British Empire 2.0.

:))) I can't help but smile watching that video much like the brummie lass in the OP, I often hang out around there! the library is literally a few seconds away from the EDL lot they should have popped in and spent their time a bit more wisely :))

Got it,makes sense.

Very intelligent and well spoken young lady! but folk who have left the city or perhaps others beyond brum as well will often speak of how certain communities have failed and use a couple of individuals in the inner city who are having issues to make shocking generalisations. No one denies that there are problems but not so much on the level of issues in the past because progress is being made, this is the British Empire 2.0 like you say and the superiority complex will consume those who've not adapted unfortunately.

She interrupted a silence for terrorism victims.

Seems a numpty much like the EDL losers.

No offence but she looks like she protests full-time for a living. These hippie types are pretty annoying.

If she really is 15 she should focus on her education and look to get in a position to influence policy rather than protesting which doesn't really achieve much at the end of the day.

A picture about a desi girl standing infront of a white racist turns into a discussion on her skin color to determine what kind of desi she is

True.

I have taken screenshots of some of the defamatory claims made by certain members on this BB. You have quite clearly lied by making the accusations yourselves without citing evidence or a source.

There is video evidence which quite conclusively shows there was no minutes silence at the time. In fact you can here EDL organisers telling their knuckle dragging supporters to move away from the incident back to the main stage.

Is there a link for that?Everyone seems to be saying it without any link.

That one minute silence which people are pointing out is based on this tweet from the same man whom the girl was smiling at:

C9CkqPRXYAAWB2S.jpg:large

Firstly, saffiyah said that was clearly not the case (listen to her short interview with BBC radio which I posted above or read the article posted by Chief Destroyer) here is the answer to a question she was asked,

So the fallout from this photo, then – I've seen some EDL supporters claiming that you were interrupting a minute's silence for victims of Islamic terrorism. What's that about?

Saffiyah: Yeah, there's contradictory video evidence. Anyone who knows me will agree that I would respect a minute's silence for the death of innocent people, regardless of who was holding it. That is a matter of my conscience, and it is a powerful tool.

:)) Am sure with a bit of sense we can figure out who's in the wrong, people are really going to pay attention to a nut job who incites hatred/bigotry and threatens to break your teeth

You don't know that she protests full time for a living. She was supposedly defending a woman in a hijab who was surrounded. I'm not one for demos myself, but it is good to know that when the EDL or their like come onto the streets, there are people who are prepared to come out against them, whatever their race. We should be appreciative rather than look to make negative slurs based on speculation which might not even be true.

Here is full video over 1 hour long

You can clearly see from c.30 mins in there was no minutes silence. All you can hear is organisers on stage calling on their knuckle draggers to come back to stage area

Well those are some pretty narrow minded claims to make when you know little about Saffiyah! any chance you guys have a membership with the EDL :yk2 Let me counter the farm boy views with the following from Saffiyah's interview:

How would you like it to play out?

I'm waiting for it all to die down a bit so that I can start being productive in the fight against racism on the streets of the UK, beyond the crazy media interest at the moment. [I've] got big things planned, focusing on the bigger picture. Being viral is worthless if nothing helpful comes of it.

So how exactly are you going to use this newfound online fame?

My aim right now is to just use it as a platform to do anything I can to reduce racism and Islamophobia in the UK. It's really not about any personal struggle with fame; I'm hardly a celebrity – it's more about the symbolism in the picture than who I am.

Comments made during her interview with BBC Radio 4:

"I knew of the demo but that wasn't why I went down, it was due to the possibility of harrasment towards muslims and women in particular those who wear headscarves so I went down in response to that possibility to help rather then the protest itself.

"The demo itself had an aggressive undertones, there was swearing and things. It was a family friendly environment with people hanging out enjoying the sun before they bought a lot of tension with them."

"I was stood in the crowd with a lot of them around me, and he felt the need to be shouting with his finger in my face; I suppose it was understandable because he was angry that I had intervened in an attempt to stabilise the situation when a woman in a scarf was being harassed and surrounded by the EDL."

[On the attention] "Some of it has been negative, with EDL members suggesting I interrupted the minute silence which I can guarantee I did not do.

[In response to a question if she has experienced racism] "No, I have lived in Birmingham for over 15 years I have never experienced it"

[On what she plans to do with the publicity] "I don't want to look like I am freeloading on the back of this but, things like this multiculturalism, community things, positive events I was engaged in before hand so I will probably just carry that on"

Furthermore, she has not given up education; by law she is required to complete it until the age of 18 as a minimum. In fact the best students tend to be well rounded and employers tend to favour those who have other extra curricular interests which can include being involved with positive community work. In fact if she is to pursue a career in politics it is of great benefit to her to get involved in such extra curricular activities beyond her education to "influence" policy inevitably Dios! what kind of a inhumane person would she be to simply ignore people who need help, either you're not a very educated/smart fellas to think such a practice would make her a good politician in the future!

She did brillianty today wearing a Free Gaza t-shirt during her interview with BBC. They are such toads of Israel Lobby they don't usually give any pro-Palestine voice any airing.

EDL members not only got infamous but are also caught lying, not great is it now for them, the issue mostly is that people are blindly copy pasting what the EDL member is saying without any proof except for his word inspite of the video saying otherwise.
