Yet he did nothing of note last month in actual spinning conditions. I'm afraid a brilliant double hundred in Southampton vs a woeful bowling attack in seaming conditions does not foreshadow competence vs spin in India.

As for Moeen, it's true he played very well last time in India, but unfortunately that was over 4 years ago.

Since then he's played 42 Test innings, scored 0 centuries and averaged 20.85. This includes a 3-match tour of Sri Lanka in 2018 where he averaged 13 and had a top score of 33 in his 6 innings.

I don't hold out as much hope for him as you do, but I could very much be setting myself up to look quite stupid. Let's see how he gets on.

Pakistan’s attack isn’t woeful. I would take Yasir straight away.

Crawley’s best position is #3. He moved up to open because Burns wasn’t available. He will be at #3 again soon.

Moeen is a confidence player. Let’s see if Silverwood has helped him get his confidence back. On form he is still the best spinner with 170 test wickets, and tends to bowl well at India. He has a top record in the fourth innings.

Unfortunately that highlights bankruptcy of the state of English spin bowling more than anything.

Yasir is second fastest bowler to 100 test wickets, and fastest to 200, beating Clarrie Grimmett. Anybody would want such a player.

As to the dearth of English spinners, this is due to the preponderance of T20 in the warmer months when spinners should be bowling more. I am glad that Somerset CCC is making spin wickets, and Leach and Bess are emerging.

I'm a of Yasir myself but feel he goes missing when conditions don't favor him. Still he's the best Pakistani bowler and that shows our current standing in cricket anyway. He performed well in London in late July though.

I'd go Hardik for Shardul in the d/n test especially....his bowling could hoop around in cold d/n conditions and be the difference ....and throw in his gun fielding and also his quick strike batting....he due for something big....however expect eng to go hard in esp this d/n test....but I still feel series will be a lot closer than people are predicting, I expect india to win but be really stretched out....Loss of Jaddu is a massive factor, Same with Shami for the d/n test...will be a good series...go Indiaaa...!

Quick strike batting is of no use in test cricket, so the better batsman and bowler should be selected for that role. Shardul bowled well in Australia, and batted well too. I don't think Hardik has played Ranji Trophy, and so I doubt if he could bowl a quota of 10 overs, possibly more in conditions that might support fast bowling with the pink ball.

I'd say Shardul is a better option.

I don’t follow English county much but somerset always strikes me as ahead of the curve. Become somewhat of a fan myself. What’s the reason for this?

England captain Joe Root will go into his 100th Test on Friday determined not to let his individual battles distract him from his larger goal of leading his side to a series victory in India, the 30-year-old said on Thursday.

Root has been in scintillating batting from, having scored a double-century and a century in his last two Tests in Sri Lanka and one of the sub-plots of four-Test series will be a batting one-upmanship between him and his India counterpart, Virat Kohli.

"It is silly not to watch how they go about things ... how they manage their own games and keep evolving and getting better all the time, and then try and add that to my own game," Root told a video conference.

"In terms of those individual battles, for me that's not the most important thing. It's not something that I will look at, what I will look is always trying to win this series," he added.

Root is also England's best batsman against spin bowling and his duel will R. Ashwin will be another point of interest in the series.

"He's a fine bowler, he's got great record in India, and is probably full of confidence. I've played against him before, scored some runs, and he's probably had the better of me a couple of times as well. It's going to be a great little battle within the Test match," Root said of the off-spinner.

Former England opener Geoffrey Boycott has said Root can go on to play 200 tests and eclipse Sachin Tendulkar's record of 15,921 runs in the format. However, Root said he was not looking that far.

"It's taken a long time to play these 100 Test matches ... and it will take a long time to potentially do that again," he said.

"To get anywhere near him, I have to play a hell of a lot more test cricket and right now I just got to concentrate on trying to be the best I can."

England will have to play out of their skins and India to have a disastrous series if England are to win this series.

I don't hold out high hopes for England in this series.

Root, Bairstow and Stokes are the only competent batsmen vs spin, and one of those guys is not even playing the first 2 Tests.

A spin attack of Moeen, Bess and Leach does not look very impressive either.

India heavy, heavy favourites to win emphatically and take their place in the WTC Final vs NZ.

I now realise that what I failed to factor into my prediction was that there would be no spin in this wicket to contend with (nor seam nor swing nor bounce).

If this pitch is anything to go by, there won't be many results in this series.

Well, it's only the first game of the series, and yet the 65% of people that said England would not win one game are already wrong :inti

Those who said 3-1 or 2-1 to India are still in the game. Those who predicted 0 wins for England are thrown away by this England team. :inti

This thread has been an amusing read just now. Some of the posts look absolutely brilliant already. Lol

For sure I didn’t see England winning a single game maybe drawing one.. but fair play real chance to leave a mark on this series. England got to fancy themselves in the Pink ball test as well. All too play for. But lots of humble pie for me!! 🥧

I don’t think many of us saw England even winning a game. India clearly missing Jadeja.

England are extremely resilient, after this result it won’t be easy for India to win the series. But I still back them to do it. We should get a great series in any case.

Well, there goes the 0-0, 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0 to India.

Expect a bruised India to come back hard in the next 3 matches, but this England team is battle-hardened and has plenty of strength in depth.

In India alot depends upon the toss. You win the toss and half the game is already won. So if England wins the toss in two of the next three games then they are not losing the series at least. My prediction is 2-2.
Another prediction : Anderson with his reverse swing will be the difference like Hassan was here. India are missing Shami more than Jadeja

For once I hope India wins the toss. We have lost the toss in our last 4 tests lol

India should prepare pitches like the ones in dharmashala and Eden gardens in every part of the country.
A test match should not be decided on a coin toss.
The Chennai one is always pretty much boring and predictable. If india win toss there, then it's pretty much game over and if the visiting side wins toss, then most of the time they would either win or draw!.

I am eagerly waiting for the Ahmadabad test at the motera stadium hope the pitch behaves same like eden garden or dharmashala.

If England win the toss again in the 2nd Test, the series (and the World Test Championship scenario) would get interesting.

IT'S not all down to the toss even though it's a advantage, second test India wins toss and gets shot out for 150 then the advantage of the toss has basically diminished if England score big or vice versa.

England's first innings total, the time they took, they wore the Indian team down mentally was perfect in a way to build a big total which enabled the wicket to detiriate.

well my prediction turned out to be rubbish haha...I still think India win it, likely 2-1 with 1 test being a draw

Since England profiteered so much off my ancestors, I figured lemme earn some off them too.

So I went to a prominent betting site and tried to bet on England winning. But oh man, the shock - they have India favourites to win despite the huge 1st Test loss.
