A man shot dead a medical student in Kohat after she turned down his marriage proposal, police said on Sunday.

Asma, a third-year student at a medical college in Abbottabad, was on vacation in her hometown Kohat when the incident happened, Kohat Development Authority police station SHO Gul Janan said.

When Asma and her sister-in-law reached home on Saturday, Mujahid Afridi and an accomplice opened fire at her as she got out of the rickshaw and fled the crime scene, the police official said.
Asma was shot thrice and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died on Sunday, SHO Janan said.

In her statement, Asma had identified Mujahid, a nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf District President Aftab Alam, as the person who had fired at her.

The suspect wanted to marry Asma and was putting pressure on the family to accept the proposal, the police said.

A case was registered against Mujahid under Sections 324 and 302 of Pakistan Penal Code.

K-P Assembly adopts resolution condemning killing of medical student who refused marriage proposal

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly passed a resolution on Monday condemning the killing of a medical student in Kohat after she had turned down a marriage proposal.

Asma, a third-year student at a medical college in Abbottabad, was on vacation in her hometown Kohat when the incident happened, Kohat Development Authority police station SHO Gul Janan had told the media.

The funeral prayer of the deceased was also offered in her hometown on Monday. District officials, as well as a large number of local residents, were present on the occasion, according to reports.

Earlier, preliminary investigations revealed that when Asma and her sister-in-law reached home on Saturday, Mujahid Afridi and his accomplice opened fire on her as she got out of the rickshaw and fled the scene, the police official said.

Asma was shot thrice and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died on Sunday, SHO Janan told reporters.

In any case KPK case is not the personal ghulam of IK/PTI and I fully expect them to get to the bottom of this. They are not like Punjab police who are only meant to serve the Sharif family.

A special team was formed on Monday to investigate the killing of Asma Rani, a third-year medical student who was reportedly shot dead in Kohat on Saturday for refusing a marriage proposal.

District Police Officer (DPO) Abbas Majeed Marwat formed a team comprising six senior police officials to resolve the case.

The DPO also said the Federal Investigation Agency had been approached for the issuance of red warrants against the accused.

According to police, Asma had been visiting her family in Kohat during a session break when the prime accused, Mujahid Afridi, and his accomplice, Sajid, reportedly opened fire on her, fleeing the crime scene soon after.

The victim had received three bullets and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she had identified Mujahid as the assailant before succumbing to her injuries on Sunday.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police on Monday also confirmed that Afridi had successfully managed to flee to Saudi Arabia from Benazir Bhutto Airport Islamabad on an Umrah visa right after the murder.

The victim's family had informed police that the suspect is the relative of a local leader of a political party. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, however, told DawnNews that so far the police has faced no political pressure in probing the case.

Of course I get what you are saying it’s the same in India.. Unfortunately I don’t think the culture will ever change even today only people who go into politics are the ones who want power..

Shocking incident, hopefully the culprit is brought back and arrested.

Quite incredible how opportunists twist such tragedies to use as a propaganda.

It was all over social media that culprit is nephew of PTI Kohat president.

First of all it is irrelevant if he is nephew as long as his uncle doesn't protect him.
Secondly, the victim and murderer were cousins and both were relatives of PTI guy so doesn't even matter.
Thirdly, both the murderer and his father are active ANP workers (as per many sources on SM).

FIR has already been lodged and culprit fled the country before FIR was lodged so it was all pre planned.

Some are even calling this failure of KPK police, not sure what they could've done to stop the murder or arrest the guy since he had left the country before FIR was even lodged?

This isn't so far removed from honour killings. Some guy was showing me a photo once of fellow who shot a man dead at a wedding because he was asked to move from a reserved seat. In countries like Pakistan they seem to think it's okay to respond to any perceived slight with a bullet or a knife. Totally twisted set of values, and it's ingrained with it going right to the top. It seems like he fled right after the murder. Not sure that the investigation had started at that point. Waseem mentioned above that the FIR hadn't been filed yet.

Anyway, the case appears to be progressing with Interpol involved.

“We have issued a red warrant and the process of his extradition from Saudi Arabia through Interpol has begun,” he said.

“We have arrested Mujahid’s accomplice Sadiqullah who will be produced in court today,” he said. “Both the accused are nephews of PTI’s district president,” he added.

LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto alleged on Tuesday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is giving patronage to terrorists and killers.

On January 27, Mujahid, who the victim's family claims is the nephew of PTI district president Aftab Alam, along with his brother, Sadiqullah Afridi, was waiting outside Asma’s residence.

The suspect shot her thrice after she stepped out of a rickshaw with her sister-in-law. Asma succumbed to her wounds a day later.

Mashal Khan, a student of journalism at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, was lynched by an angry mob on April 13 which had accused him of blasphemy. Arif, a tehsil councillor in Mardan and a general secretary of the Insaf Student Federation, the student wing of the PTI, was allegedly among those who incited the mob.

Media has the right to highlight all the faults in our society but i feel that honorable supreme court should avoid taking suo moto notice on every topic that is highlighted by media. Some elements in media have also tried to hit PTI with this crime which makes little sense.

ABBOTTABAD: The Interpol arrested on Thursday the prime suspect in the murder of medical student Asma Rani from Sharjah.

Asma, a third-year medical student in Abbottabad, was in her hometown of Kohat on vacation when, on January 27, Mujahid Afridi allegedly opened fire on her for refusing his marriage proposal.

Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Salahuddin Mehsud said that it will take some time to bring the suspect back to Pakistan.

Sharjah police also confirmed the arrest of the suspect from an industrial area.

The KP police had approached the Interpol after the accused, the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf district president Aftab Alam, fled the country following the incident.

The Interpol had placed Mujahidullah on its most wanted list.

It just proves that there are plenty of honest and competent people, we just need to give them chance and powers to act independently.

It doesn't mean Nawaz or Zardari can't do same in their provinces or there aren't good people there, just means they do not want to give up their power and let the institutions act independently.
