Prithvi Shaw: International Career Watch

get a feeling Shaw inclusion in this game is to do with Mumbai lobby. Hopefully that is not the case. Let the kid go back to domestics and evolve. He seems very raw now
 
Have to say he has quite substantial technical issues for test cricket in SENA. Shubman Gill is much more mature player and has a tighter technique. India might have gone with Shaw for continuity reasons but they need to immediately replace him with Gill for the next one.

What a comparison lol. High backlift and that’s where comparison ends. Lara was assured and very deft in his technique , on other hand Shaw seems very sluggish in his movements in crease. Even his body language on field was pathetic

No Lara used to get bowled quite a bit and his technique was all over the place.

However he was a magician, I have heard Colin Croft on TV spoke the similar feedback about Lara after getting bowled as how Ponting spoke about Shaw.
 
This should help him build character if he has it in him also if he is going to score in India and get pumped and cocky it will be pointless.

Gill has the fire but his power game is still a bit below.

All young Indian batsmen being hyped up, testing times for them.

Needs to be put out of his misery and go back to FC. Talented but there are obvious chinks

Our coach thinks he's mix of Sachin,Sehwag and Lara. Such hype from within the team can build lots of pressure

three things to do

1) lose weight. put on muscle and get leaner
2) fix technique. more first class practice
3) just do something else. i dont know play a guitar

lastly he will be back. he is not done. just not ready yet.

Why did he get hyped in the first place? At least Unmukt Chand won a U-19 World Cup as captain and batsman. What did Shaw ever do?

If you had continued watching u-19 championships since that Unmukt Chand win, you would notice Shaw did the same as well- winning the championship . Not sure of his batting stats though but he was a u-19 capt as well and from the games I saw did decently.

tbf hes done some amazing things for a prodigy,like scoring 546 in Harris Shield or doing well in FC or A tours. Ofcourse he also captained India U19 to WC win

However he's not a finished product for Test cricket which is okay. Couple of FC seasons and he'll be good
 
Neither Shaw nor Gill were going to be Tendulkar or even :rabada2 Kohli.

Both are potential Indian greats though. I'd put Shaw ahead of Gill despite the gaping hole that's on show right now.

It also puts into perspective how phenomenal Tendulkar was at 16. Arguments can be made for Lara's style, Ponting's peak, Kohli's brutal chases, Steve Smith's test wonders. All of these against Sachin.

But that is another whole level of ability to promise so much, deliver on the hype and then keep doing it most of the 20+ years he then went on to play.

Lara too came in quite young (19 I think) but fell off and came back a couple years later before he turned on legend mode.

Yup, he was supposed to debut when he was 19 but Viv decided against it. Lara was forced to sit on the bench for two years before being chosen to play his first test in Pakistan in 1990.

It was always a source of resentment against Viv for Lara that he served such a long period of apprenticeship, but I believe those two years allowed Lara to channel that resentment into an insatiable hunger for runs when he did make his debut.

He looks like he’s not working hard enough. I haven’t followed him last few months but called this a few months ago when I saw some TikTok of him and Shikar Dhawan; and Shaw looked woefully out of fitness which showed he isn’t putting hard yards.

In yesteryears that may have been fine but now that’s just part of the training regime so if he was committed to that during lockdown he would look much fitter.

Hope he fulfil the talent and doesn’t fall to way side.

Same thing happened with Tendulkar. He was supposed to debut an year earlier than he eventually did during India's tour to WI. Indian selector (Dungrapur?) though were afraid that baby faced Tendulkar might get hit by WI pace quartet which may scar him mentally so early in his career.

“He has enormous talent but his game is free-flowing, and there will be days when he can rip apart opponents. But that won’t happen everyday. As an opener, the basic job is to take the shine off the new ball. Even if you don’t score too many runs, it is important that you be patient and try to stay at the crease for long…”

“That way, you gain the confidence and once you are settled, you can play your strokes. That’s how you score runs. You cannot be impatient at the highest level,” Azharuddin said.

In the seaming conditions Down Under, the 21-year-old has had issues with his footwork and Azharuddin said: “I hope that somebody in the team management tells him that he needs to tighten his defence. You can’t play a similar attacking game that you played against the West Indies two years ago, because you are playing pink ball after a long time, so it is anyway challenging. So you need to focus.”

When the youngster from Mumbai broke into the Indian Test team and hammered consecutive hundreds against the West Indies in the autumn of 2018, the cricketing fraternity started comparing him with Sachin Tendulkar. Azharuddin believes that such comparisons can only be discussed after “15 years of playing cricket.”

If that’s the case,I feel no sympathy towards him. There are fitness instructors in every street in India these days and with his IPL money, he can even get the best one even from abroad. So no excuses for poor fitness.

He can go back to domestic cricket or even county to correct his technique and come back.
He can get inspired from how Dhawan came back. He too was a member of our U19 WC winning team. But then faded into oblivion after that and had to toil for years in domestics to earn a place in Indian team. A place in a national team should be earned with hardwork.

There’s a documentary on him since he was 13-14. And he looked even younger then. He’s been tipped for the top for a long while.

He’s lost hair and gained weight so looks more than his age. Needs to fix the fitness

That's true.

Btw I think he is depressed. Serious. It happens. C'mon losing your hair, pimples and being tubby etc. He needs to get fitter and just shave his head completely.

If that's the case I feel sorry for him but as a professional there is no excuse to not being fit.

As soon as I saw that it was him under the ball to take the catch I knew he would drop it, and that catch was a dolly 9 times out of 10 anyone would have caught that with their eyes closes.

Don't know why India keep playing him, they have a star in the making in Gill, but yet they keep playing Shaw?

Yea that’s possible. But anyways he’s got a long way to go and very young and some people here acting like he’s been given multiple dozen chances or sth.

Also maybe unpopular opinion but I don’t think IPL helps in this case.
 
Classic PP reaction this.

Either a GOAT after a test or so, or a complete dud who has faked his age, is an unmerited selection and is an all-round careless person.

Shaw is a very talented player with all the shots, but like many players at his age, has to iron out some issues. I hear the people who say that Gill is more compact in technique, but he has a few technical issues around his pad too.

In my opinion, these two are exciting prospects for India, and will carry the Indian batting for years to come. Let's not overrate or downplay their talents.
 
I would sell my left arm Just to have a player like Shaw in our lineup. Hé Just needs some time to correct his mistakes.

I agree. I am afraid he will have to do a lot of adjustments in his game to become a successful opening batsman away from home. Domestic cricket will not work. He will smash those bowlers on flat Indian wickets.
 
He has been bowled through the gate on a number of occasions as he has opened himself to drive through the off-side even when the ball is aimed at the stumps - particularly due to his backlift coming down from gully into a hands-through-the-ball drive, rather than a check-drive from first slip, leaving an inherent gap between his bat and pad for the ball to go through

The above passage from cricbuzz summarizes his batting problems... Plus, his fielding isnt much to talk about.. and with Gill emerging like a colossus in Australia, the chances of him making it back to the test side would depend on an injury or run of bad form for the current opening candidates Rohit/Gill/Mayank/KL Rahul
 
He will score 20,000 international runs. He has run into a technical problem and it will addressed in his time away from the team.

He has the same natural gift that Tendulkar and Lara did. India will not let him go to waste.

Pondicherry is new kid on bloc and has club level bowlers apart from professional hire Pankaj who is past it now.

Shaw now has to do it the hard way. Regaining lost place is harder than debuting. And he has obvious technical issues that world now knows. He will have to show improvement on that front before he come mes back anywhere near team India.

We are playing wrong players. Shaw will be successful even in tests in India. He is bit of a FTB and will always be a heavy scorer in home conditions. I would play him as an opener above Gill in India. In overseas, it should be Gill always.

His technical issue is a concern for test matches. I would like to see how his bat is coming up now. But I think in ODIs and T20s, he can be pretty destructive. Will have to wait how he does in IPL though as IPL is at same level to WT20.

Home/away logic don't work. We should persist with Gill everywhere in test cricket. He has tighter technique than both Shaw and Mayank although he too has flaws.
 
Shaw should bounce back as he has got good starts in India and if he can work on staying on the crease longer, runs will come. Should utilise his talent. His flaws like not getting his body behind the stroke are usual flaws that all subcontinent players need to overcome. Nothing that cant be fixed. Has to work on hiss mental strength and try to dominate bowlers on loose deliveries. AS of ow, he attempts fishing for runs away from his body which will not work as he is facing quick seamers as an opener.
 
A good IPL season and he will be back in the white ball reckoning.

Gill hasn't cemented his spot in the test team yet, but I don't see how Shaw can realistically be a reserve batsman for the England tour without sorting out his problems against the swinging ball.

Like Pant, Shaw will also find a hater after that who will come up and bump his thread after every single failure including meaningless bilateral T20s and also the ones in which he gave good start but missed out on big one.

There is nothing wrong in being wrong in your assessment. Everyone is a human and mistakes are acceptable. Problem is not learning even after being proven wrong and continue to do the same stuffs.
 
Both Sachin and Kambli were child prodigies but one turned out to be an ATG whereas the other became a comedian. I could see Gill and Shaw following similar paths. I'd leave it upto you guys to guess who's gonna become Sachin and who'd turn out to be Kambli 2.0

Yes he is bit of a FTB like Sehwag but it is not necessarily a bad thing. Shaw can be a destructive opener in Indian sub-continent across all formats. Its just his away game that he needs to improve.

We don't need these types though. We can win against the West Indies at home with whoever we play, don't need a specialist.
