VVS Laxman confident 'match-winner' Prithvi Shaw will get his opportunity

As Prithvi Shaw was overlooked for the ongoing ODI series against England despite performing well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, former India batsman VVS Laxman hailed the player, terming him "match-winner" and said he is sure that the youngster will get his opportunity.
Shaw scored mammoth 800-plus runs in 8 innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy but still failed to book a spot in India's ODI squad.

"Again, I think, definitely, the way Prithvi Shaw performed, and probably as a captain, he led Mumbai to win the Vijay Hazare Trophy. I think he deserves to be a part of the ODI squad but the way the selectors have gone about selecting the squad is whoever have been performers, they have made a sort of a line or a queue. Prithvi Shaw, at the moment, is behind in the queue because we have Shubman Gill, who has done really well in international cricket, in the opportunity he has got recently," Laxman said.

"Plus, you have experience openers in the form of KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, and you can only have probably three or four openers in the squad. I am sure Prithvi Shaw will get his opportunity. What really impressed me was that he worked on his technique. It is not only about his performances, but there were some issues with his technique and that is something which he has worked on in the Vijay Hazare and he has been consistent. He is a match-winner and I am sure he will get his opportunity," he added.

Prithvi Shaw's career trajectory going the Shehzad/Akmal way?

Prithvi Shaw is a precocious talent but its the discipline that he lacks to become a great cricketer. It was a shock for the many fans of prithvi shaw to see that he had got a doping violation much like Shehzad did a few years ago. Will he be able to overcome his demons or will it be a slow but sure descent into cricketing mediocrity that mirrors the careers of Akmal and Shehzad.

What do Ppers think?
 
I dont think that'll happen Indian cricket structure, and culture are far ahead of pakistan. In terms of developing talent they are the best team in cricket at the moment.

Id give him a year or two and we will see him back again.

Then again it all depends in his mentality, if he is hungry enough to evolve and grow as a cricketer.

Im still betting on the Indian system to sort him out the chances seem higher compared ri akmal and shezad. Both of them were not hungry enough to improve once they made the national team.

They seemed happy at the level they were at. Because in pakistan you get many opportunities once you make a few connects while in india there are so many good to great players to choose from so once you are dropped its harder to make a comeback unless you are hungry to improve.
 
There is so much competition for batsmen in the Indian team, 1-2 failures and you are out and someone makes the most of the opportunity and you don't get a look in again. Similarly Pakistan has a lot of pacers coming through the ranks but only a very few can play. Look at the case for Shinwari, he did very well against the Sri Lankans in ODI's but never got an opportunity again because of his T-20 performances.
 
Not really . He will be the heir to tendulkar - sharma opening odi batter throne and in tests he will play in middle order . He is curently the best batsman after sharma and Kohli in india .

BCCI will not let him go astray. He needs some minor tweaks and he will work on them.

Forget Umar and Shehzad - no Pakistani batsmen in history had as much natural ability as Shaw.

Purely in terms of talent, he is in the category of Tendulkar and Lara. A batting genius and a child prodigy.

I agree with the bolded part, he has the X factor which only SRT & Lara had, but I dont agree with rest of your post.
 
Shaw is a talent. He will come arond. He is going nowhere. Just that Shubman GIll is more talented.
 
He needs to work on his fitness, fielding and his overseas game is a big question mark.

A 60 averaging batsman at home and a 35 averaging batsman away is his test matches ceiling.
 
Shaw will be fine. His weakeness will remain that sharp in coming ball but that's true for most batsman these days.
 
We should not have gone with Shaw's test form. He had scored some 40s and a 50 in the last ODI series he played in NZ.

Would have proved to be better bet than Dhawan for sure, at least in our ODI team. Unfortunately now these scores of 97 and 50-odd in this ODI series will cement Dhawan's place in ODI team for another year or so.

If Shaw wants to become a serious test player outside Asia, he needs to work for a couple of months with Rahul Dravid, forget everything and start afresh. Of course, that will require a lot of commitment and possibly a break from white ball cricket, and I am not sure if that's realistic.

Exactly. For a debutant, he was handling and even dominating Jamieson so well. Puzzled how he got himself ejected from the opening role after that more than acceptable debut series. He'd have slaughtered these currans and topleys in India.

He's not going to be in the conversation for an opening role in tests as long as Rohit hangs around. So these one on one tutorials can wait.

He was ejected from the opening role because we had to somehow accomodate Dhawan in opening role.

It's really a no brainer to terminate Dhawan's career at the earliest as Rohit and Kohli aren't going anywhere and all 3 of them are almost similar type of batsmen at least in the early and middle overs.

And rightly so. Even though most of us fear and detest Rohit, the opening test batsman in SENA tests, Rohit has earned the right to
be our test opener for at least England tour.

I remain extremely fearful though of us being reduced to 2/10 in first few overs of every test innings we bat in England.

It's more likely that he might have a few nets with Tendulkar like Virat did after his horrible England tour.

Sachin has been a little involved with Prithvi when he was a 12 or 13-year-old upcoming talent. There was an anecdote about a coach wanting to change his grip and Sachin asked Shaw's dad to tell the coach - Tendulkar said it's ok, leave it the way it is :shh

He probably would not want to as he will anyways be a hot favourite among Indian fans through IPL and LOI exploits post the retirements of Kohli and Rohit.

He can still be a lethal LOI prospect and good for tests in subcontinent conditions especially with the lack of quality fast bowlers.

That should be enough for him to get a "superstar" tag and have a Sehwag type career.

A string of low scores led to Prithvi Shaw being dropped in the middle of the Test series. Since then he has worked on his game, particularly his bat-swing, to bounce back.


India and Delhi Capitals player Prithvi Shaw went through a horror patch in the last IPL that tailed him in the series in Australia. A string of low scores led to him being dropped in the middle of the Test series. Since then he has worked on his game, particularly his bat-swing, to bounce back.

What was the problem five-six months back?

When the ball moved around, especially when it cut back into him, he was in trouble. The primary reason was his bat-lift and bat swing. The hands initially moved back and up like most batsmen, but suddenly they betrayed him, going wider, away from him to the right, before he would drag them back in line. That detour cut his reaction time, accentuated the bat-pad gap, upset the downward bat-swing, and delayed the bat coming down in time for the incoming ball. It also affected his game against the away-shaper as he would end up playing away from the body. It wasn’t a problem against lesser bowlers in domestic cricket but it was a red flag for bowlers with greater skill in IPL and the Australian pacers.

What was the course correction he has done?

Ever since he was dropped mid-series in Australia, and especially once back in India, he has been working on it. The proof of correction came in the 50-overs Vijay Hazare tournament. The bat-lift is now a lot straighter (relatively). It’s more streamlined and fluid. Resultantly, he was more compact in that 50-over tournament and was beginning to move into line of the ball a lot more. The question remained, however, whether he would be able to take the form into the IPL and he has started well against the swing bowlers of Chennai Super Kings. He wasn’t particularly tested by the nipbackers which undoubtedly other teams in the competition would attempt.

What did he say about his technical issues?

“My bat was coming down slightly away from my body. There was an issue with the initial movement. I was in a fixed position. I needed to keep my bat closer to my body, which I wasn’t doing,” he told this newspaper.


Was there any other problem apart from the bat-lift?

In the couple of years, he had an issue where he was getting too legside of the ball by his tendency to move his back leg almost outside the leg stump. It wasn’t that much of a problem on its own but combined with his bat-lift and bat-swing, it proved to be a downer as he was playing too far away from the body. He had been working on that ever since the 2018 tour of England where Ravi Shastri in particular tried to sort out that particular issue. That movement stopped more or less, and last IPL, he tried to correct it further by taking a middle-stump guard and a slightly-open stance, with his back leg on the middle-stump line. But the problem had moved from the feet to the hands by then.

Was he also trying to hit the ball too hard last IPL?

He didn’t stay too long in the middle in Australia but he certainly was trying to hit the ball too hard last IPL, and often yanked out of position as a result. It’s a thing that was noticed by the people who have worked with him before. Someone like Julian Wood, a power-hitting coach who has interacted with a young Shaw when he was not even in his teens, told this newspaper, “He was trying to hit the ball hard. That’s not his game. He is a punchy player; he doesn’t have to hit the ball hard. Also, his hands had started to go out a bit in the bat-swing. They were going too wide”.

What was his mind space in Australia when he was dropped?

“There is a saying, ‘hard work beats talent’. I told myself all this talent is fine but it’s of no use if I don’t work hard. It was the saddest day of my life (when he was dropped). I went to my room and broke down. I felt like something wrong was happening. I needed answers quickly,” he told this newspaper.

I wish him the best but I don't care about how he does in the IPL, except that he has done enough and improved enough to perform at the international level.

All the self introspecting articles and improved IPL performances in the world won't matter zilch, unless we see it being done right against world class pace bowling.

I'm almost instinctively inclined to believe he will not be in the SRT/ Lara category or even close.

Ofcourse to be in Lara Tendulkar category you have to be really good and from a very young age. Shaw is still clearing out the errors in his game. May become a great player or maybe not but definitely not lara / Sachin level
 
I am sure I saw many fans abusing him, blaming him and wanting him to be dropped from the team after 36 all out happened against Australia. He is officially a 21 year old baby in International cricket but I don't see the same amount of support and backing which other 24 year old baby got from fans and Team Management. :inti

So, as per you he has faked his age and he is 21 years old in this video.

This is Prithvi Shaw in 2014 which was 7 years ago.

If he is at least 26 today, do these pictures look like that of an 18-19 year old? It is amazing the length some Pakistani fans would go to. Complete suspension of common sense and logic.

it is mind boggling really. He became famous as a kid, his whole life since the age 13/14 is now documented in media, with pictures etc.

But, people on this forum question Sachin Tendulkar's age as well.
So, if Shehzad and Akmal have more talent then Tendulkar, then anything goes.:facepalm

He should be considered in Indian T20 squad.

A destructive opener and a much better all-format opening batsman than say, Kishan.
 
India should definitely give him a chance in white-ball cricket, I think his approach & playing style is much more suited to white-ball cricket.

IMO he will struggle in SENA tests but he can really be one of the best openers in Limited overs.

I may be wrong but he looks much older. People with baby faces can look young for a long time. Sam Curran could pass off as a 15 year old even today.

Sam Curran could easily pass off as a 15 Yr old in a school with his baby face. If Shaw had been at that school all along,then I am obviously wrong. Was he at that school all along?

No. Sam Curran does not look like a 15 year old at all in the picture you provided. He looks like a 20 year old.

Which Ind bowler got banned for faking his age recently? If you are so whiter than white, why did Dravid have to make his statement, you don't see England or Australian making the same statements.
Can you clarify that Shaw had been at the same school all the time

People have different growth spurts. It is completely biological and genetic.
Within 2 years sometimes the whole body changes when growing up.

But, again, Back up your claim to show that Prithvi Shaw looks like a 21 year old person as per your claims.

Do you have a comprehension problem? My very first post on this thread admits the age fudging problem in Indian cricket. That Dravid and BCCI have set in place a lot of procedural checks along with penalty only shows they are cognizant and serious about this problem.

How does any of the above somehow mean that Shaw is 26? LMAO. Given that this lad has been in limelight since 2011, seeing his pictures, and the fact that he played under Dravid as a coach at U19 WC, he seems a legit 21 year old.

OTOH, if I were a Pk fan I'd be seriously worried about Shaheen's speeds and bowling in 3 years time.

This is the story from 2013/14, when he broke the school record,scoring 546, aged 14. Again, look at the article, look at kid's picture in that article.. Does he look like a 21 year old to you ?
He studied in Rizvi Springfield.. and has captained their U-16 team as well.
He has a very well documented media presence, and documented history since this time.

No worries. I maybe wrong but the definitive answer will come from his early years schooling and the reason for that is that there is no reason to lie in those early years. No one thinks we need fake this 8 yr olds age because he will become a superstar and needs a helping hand. Irrespective of age he is a great talent and will as I said take attacks apart on his day.

He did his early schooling till age 10 in a Virar school, which was 65KM away from Mumbai maidaans.
His talent became obvious, playing around those maidaans so he got a scholarship and some help from local MLA from age 11 has studies in Rizvi School, and for them he played in Harris Shield, Mumbai's Premier School Cricket Tournament(same one where Sachin Tendulkar and Kambli scored runs as 14 year olds).
There is a documentary, Beyond all boundaries some months after Tendulkar's retirement, during which Prithvi broke school record and people and media created hoopla around finding the next Sachin.
14 year old Prithvi features heavily in that as well.

There are age cheats in Indian cricket but not Prithvi Shaw. His opening partner in 2018 wc was one of them and deservedly got banned. I think Ishan Porel might be another but thats for a separate discussion.

As others have said, Shaw has been in the limelight since he debuted on the Mumbai maidans even before entering his teens, good luck hiding your age by 5-6 years alongside boys of that age.

Ishan surely is not. In Bengal age fudging is much less observed currently.

I have worked with literally 1000s of kids in my 24 years as a teacher, i have rarely seen any 22 years look like that. Maybe he is a 1st and he is genuine. He is a hell of talent, and it doesnt matter when you play with the big boys.

Out of those 1000s kids, how many 19/20/21 year olds look like this?

If Shaw is at least 26 today, he must be 19/20/21 in this picture below, which is from 2014:

It doesn’t take an expert to figure out that he is a little kid here and by no means 19/20/21. You can find 22 year olds look like Shaw today but you won’t find a young adult look like him when he was 14.

He is clearly not age-cheat and the reason why you are still clutching at straws is because you don’t want to admit that you were wrong.

He looks the way he does because of his receding hairline and the mustache. Any 21 year old would look 5-6 years older with a mustache and a receding hairline.

Prithvi Shaw did his schooling in Mumbai. Cricketers who come from Mumbai, Karnataka, TN, Hyderabad, Bengal generally have their real ages. He is a kid. Just looks older than his actual age.
 
Rahul David is very particular about age. Even though Shaw has aged quite a bit in the last 2 years, he's still 22

It makes no difference what I think or what anyone else thinks, it was an observation which maybe wrong as many many of you have suggested or right based on some guys with baby faces looking younger than they are.

It doesn’t take an expert to figure out that he is a little kid here and by no means 19/20/21. You can find 22 year olds look like Shaw today but you won’t find a young adult look like him when he was 14.

He is clearly not age-cheat and the reason why you are still clutching at straws is because you don’t want to admit that you were wrong.

He looks the way he does because of his receding hairline and the mustache. Any 21 year old would look 5-6 years older with a mustache and a receding hairline.

Shaw isn't an age fudger. I had heard of him from a friend who had played against him at the age group level even before Shaw had made it to U19 side. My friend also confirmed that Shaw isn't an age fudger though some other players playing age group cricket are.

Shave that caterpillar off his face and start using the proven OOh Lala products. He will look like Tendulkar's little son in no time.
