OMG I have been waiting and waiting to see him in the International Arena and the cricketing Gods have finally obliged my humble wish. Whether he will play in the 11 is doubtful, but being with the team for a few weeks will be great experience.

Why is this bloke in the India team at such a young age? Lets look at what he has been doing so far.

Career highlights so far

2010
In 2010, Prithvi, all of 11, caught the eye of former Mumbai left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni, whose sports management company signed him up for an annual stipend of Rs 3 lakh.

2012
* Shaw captained Rizvi Springfield to Harris Shield title, the most prestigious trophy in Indian youth cricket. He scored 155 in the semi-final and 174 in the final match

* In April 2012, Shaw was invited to England to play for Cheadle Hulme School in Manchester and scored 1,446 runs during a two-month stay. He scored a century on debut and averaged 84. He also took 68 wickets

* Prithvi even had a stint with Gloucestershire second team this year.

2013
* captains Rizvi Springfield to another Harris Shield title
* smashes 546 in 330 balls in Harris Shield in an innings to create a record.

2014
* he played for Cleethorpes in the Yorkshire ECB County Premier League

2016
* as part of India U19 team wins Asia Cup.

2017
* He equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record by scoring a century in his debut game in the Ranji and Duleep Trophy.
* Named captain of India U19.

2018

* Captains India U19 and wins the U19 World Cup.
* In January 2018, he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 IPL auction for ₹ 1.2 crores.
* Prithvi scores four centuries for India 'A' -- 102 against the West Indies 'A', 132 against Leicestershire, 136 against South Africa 'A' and 188 against the West Indies 'A'
* Currently averages 56 in FC with 7 100's in 14 games.
* Selected in the Indian Test Team in England for the 4th and 5th matches.


One of the three players I personally picked to have good international careers, (Gll and Shaheen are the other 2) Prithvi has had quite a career so far. Almost a Tendulkar'esque beginning, but with one HUGE difference. Tendulkar made his debut in a relatively weaker Indian team and was give a very long rope to succeed. Here on the other hand, Prithvi will make his debut in a very powerful Indian squad helmed by a certain Mr. Kohli who never repeats a playing XI. His margin for error will be very tiny and just one or two bad performances may spell doom for him.

Prithvi will have his work cut off for him, and fans (like me) might have too much expectations from him. The possibility of Prithvi making his Test debut in England is very miniscule, but if he is given an opportunity, I hope he takes it with both hands.


Will he have a sparkling international career or will he flatter to deceive like Hasan Raza? Lets watch :afridi
 
Powerful squad? Apart from Kohli all have failed so far. Not sure Prithvi will be given a chance though because everyone managed 30's or 40's at the very least.
 
I repeat - we should NOT select an 18 year old into the test squad.

Tendulkar was the exception, not the rule.

Might as well give him a go. Apart from Mayank Agarwal who else has performed for the A team. We need to get them in young or they will be lost to the system. Now they have chances to iron out their flaws by playing in difficult conditions and against international standard bowling attacks.
 
Speaking of Mayank Agarwal, I think he is very unlucky. Have scored bucketful of runs in last few seasons. If not for stubborn nature of Indian team management and selectors for not daring to loom beyond Dhawan and Rohit, he'd have been a regular in Indian team by now.

At least should've been tried by now.
 
Rohit is way too inconsistent, fails more often than not in deciders and knockouts. Even when he tees off once in a while, it usually comes at the expense of team run rate in 1-25 overs.
 
Though I'm nobody to judge.. But, personally I don't think he's next Sachin.. Maybe, at best he's a poor version of Viru.
 
He won't get to play but being in squad with top notch support staff and players like Kohli will only improve his confidence. Hopefully he learns a few things from Kohli and works as hard as he did.
 
Tendulkar made his debut as a 16 year old against Wasim, Waqar and Imran. Surely Prithvi can make his debut at 18. He also has to face a 'slightly lesser talented' attack. :leo

Somehow I doubt he is making his debut in England. He might get a chance in Australia.
 
Shaw will not get a game unless one of Rahul or Dhawan gets injured.

Vihari will not get a game unless Pujara or Rahane gets injured.

I have a feeling Shaw will debut in the next series. I actually want Shaw to play in the Asia cup.
 
I am with you on this and have been looking forward to see Shaw represent India for many many years. He should be dropped in the water. Your bhaijaan is not a fan of letting a prodigious talent like Shaw wait too long.

Let us give him the opportunity to be the next Sachin.
 
Too early I think for Shaw. He is a good batsman but wont last against the quality of Anderson and co. Should have made his debut against WI at home and then take it from there.
 
I am not in favour of putting an 18 year old batsman into the team away from home. Young batsman has to score tons of runs in the domestic and A tours first before getting selected. If he fails that will not be good for his confidence.

However the case for young upcoming bowlers is totally different. They should be picked when they are young like we did with Irfan Pathan and Pakistan does with most of their bowlers. Batsman only gets a one chance whereas bowlers can make a comeback after one bad over. Guys like Mavi, Khaleel and Nagarkotti should be selected as soon as possible.
 
We dont have another Opener in domestic cricket. Mayank would be very good for LoIs but not tests.
 
Would love to see Mayank and Shaw opening for us in Asia cup even if that means having a below par tourney.

I know for sure this is not going to happen though.
 
To quote SRT: if a player is good enough, age doesn't matter.

He can be the next big thing in India's rich batting history.

Tendulkar predicted a decade back that Shaw will play for India!
 
Throw him in. If a pint-sized 18 year old debutanat survives a session against Anderson, then Indians can taunt him with "Abbey jaa...pehle bache ko out kar..." sledges for the rest of the series. :))
 
So, what are the odds of Shaw walking out to take guard on Thursday? Could he become the second teenage Indian bat to be handed a test debut in 29 years.

Shaw's debut would make for a compelling story and viewing but Mayank too has done all he could in the last 18 months or so. The man has an equal claim to partner KLR.

The fresh inductees in the form of Pant and Shaw/Mayank should make the series a bit more watchable than it otherwise would be.

In my opinion, it would be unfair with Mayank to prefer Shaw over him considering his consistent performances throughout the years as you have mentioned and Shaw will get many chances ahead as he is barely 19.

True, but Shaw has been no less consistent. Remember, Mayank has been playing FC cricket for 6 seasons and this is the first time he has shown consistency.

If Shaw is objectively better then his age shouldn't matter. Emotional reasons like he's only 19 and would get many more chances should have NO place in team selection.

You have to factor in Mayank's overall record as well. He has scored 3372 runs in 73 innings at 50+ avg in first class and 3472 runs in 70 innings at 50+ avg in list A.

This is what I call consistency and we can't compare shaw's stats with him considering Shaw has played just a few innings at first class level.

Mayank's average of 50 is misleading. Before the last season, his average was 40 or 41, putting him as barely passable domestic bat. That average nudged 50 only after he finally discovered a taste for big runs last season.

Like I said, Mayank couldn't have done anything more over the last 18 months. But the argument that he deserves a chance because Prithvi is only 19 - that's an emotional and flawed reasoning for selection.
 
I personally feel Mayank should be preferred to partner KL Rahul at the top over Prithvi Shaw.

Prithvi has consistently scored big runs so far in his short career but needs to go through the grind in first class cricket for 1 or 2 seasons more to have a decent sample size to judge from. Too often batsmen have a great couple of years at the start and are then worked out. Also, what needs to be seen is if his technical issues (backfoot dragging across) trouble him against the better bowlers.

With the Australia tour not far away, perhaps Mayank would be a better choice having the experience of playing in various conditions and situations in domestic cricket and numerous A tours.
 
India have a hard choice to make. Would be a tough call.

Shaw & Agarwal seem more skilled & talented than current Test Opener Murali Vijay.


It seems that both will play for India for a long time in atleast two formats if not three.



India is producing most talented Cricketers now at all levels. Even at U 19 level they have overtaken WI, Pak and SL in producing batsman, spinners aswell as pacers. IPL and quality academies coupled with coaches like Dravid are doing amazing job in grooming these players. Well done to BCCI a Democratically run cricket board.

Rahane has been in poor form for a while now. His trouble against half decent spin is well known.

India should play both Agarwal and Shaw and see who has got it. I feel Agarwal has some issues with pace bowling in excess of 140k's. He seems to be a good player of medium pace and spin.

Shaw seems to be at ease against both.
 
Mayank's career has some parallels with Dhawan. A productive U19 campaign followed by underwhelming output in domestics. Found their mojo in late 20s to launch a serious bid for a place in the national XI. More adept in the 50 over format. Very strong in their scoring areas despite some pronounced technical flaws.

On the contrary, he looked the most comfortable against a fast bowler like Billy Stanlake who was bowling at 145+kph in the recent Australia A tour of India. Guys like Ishan Kishan on the other hand visibly struggled against pace and bounce. Some of Agarwal's backfoot punches against rising balls were infact a treat to watch.
 
What happened to that guy who scored the triple century - Karun Nair? Any idea why he was dropped?

Too much competition to get into the team. Besides the unbeaten triple, his remaining innings haven't been up to the mark. He probably doesn't care as long as he keeps getting big IPL contracts.

We need Shaw in the team NOW. He will be the fourth coming of the "Great Indian Test Batsman", following Gavaskar, Tendulkar and Kohli.

Bhajji and Parthiv were two other teens to debut since Sachin.
 
Shah will be an Indian great, he is the most talented batsman emerged from India since Kohli. Technique, hunger, temperament and age, he possesses everything to become a great batsman.

I do not think Agarwal,vihari,siraj or Thakur ready for test matches in India.Shaw might pick for Australia tour but I would like Vijay back in the test team from Hyderabad test.Shaw deserve so far so he will debut tomorrow at Rajkot, I seen him number of times playing in domestic, he is not difficult to dismiss but he is Fluent player to watch once he gets going.Few days ago he scored 8 vs WI at Baroda than dismissed.
 
I hope Kohli and Shastri tell Shaw and Rahul, you will play each test in the next three series. Go out and perform without any worries.

Really excited for another young batsman after Pant’s debut last month. Keen to see how they both and Rahul do in this series.

Don't worry. Dhawan will be back. He is a must for the Kohli- Shastri duo to promote their pseudo attacking cricket

Actually it shows that India have a real problem with middle order batsmen in the domestic system.

Think about all the new names we hear about - Mayank, Shaw, Gill, Nair, Iyer etc are all top order batsmen. Even KL Rahul.

The fact is that we don't have many middle order batsmen who are doing anything special in domestic cricket at the moment. I can think of only 3 poeple - Hanuma Vihari and Ankit Bawne, both of whom are performing in FC mostly. So they are not LO material. The only new player who is doing well and is also a middle order bat for LOs is Manish Pandey.

Can't we play a couple of "Mayank, Shaw, Gill, Nair, Iyer" in the middle order? I mean, a batsman who can open should also be able to play in the middle, especially in Tests.

They tried doing that with KL Rahul in ODIs and it failed. Later on, even suggested that he is best suited to open the innings.

They have also tried Iyer at the middle order in ODIs. He should be given more chances.

In tests, I suppose it's possible to have them in the middle order but in tests our main issue is the top order so it only makes sense to test them at the top against the new cherry.

To paraphrase the legendary Azhar, Prithvi is batting well in nets.
 
Prithvi Shaw makes debut Vs West Indies at Rajkot at 18 years and 329 days. Looking forward to see the young man bat. :babar
 
Initial impression. His game is built around exceptional balance and timing. Not very reliant on footwork for weight transfer. Hand eye coordination as good as any I have seen before. Not at all your typical Mumbai technician. Closer to Sehwag in his approach to batting.
 
Style somewhere between Sachin and Sehwag. More footwork than Sehwag
 
Also, a moment's silence for all those who declared Shaw was too young to merit a test debut.

Shaw is a refreshing change in this indian batting line up where every batsman seems averse to play on backfoot. Shaw should do well in Australia.
 
Think he was influenced by Lara growing up. There's a Lara-type flourish he adds into his shots.

That's just his backlift. Lara's flourish was on account of his bat's follow through AFTER it had met the ball. It was very lavish.

Shaw on the other hand has minimal follow through after he strokes the ball, he pretty much checks himself. It's more like Sehwag.
 
Shaw is Sehwag with trigger movement added. That may help him in Australia.
 
What a debut by Shaw. He is going to be a star. Loving the back lift.

t 18 years and 329 days, Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian and the fourth-youngest overall to score a century on Test debut, against the Windies in Rajkot on Thursday, 4 October.

Along the way, Shaw had also become the youngest Indian to score a half-century on Test debut. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Parthiv Patel were younger than Shaw when they got their maiden Test half-centuries, but not on debut.

Only Bangladesh's Mohammad Ashraful (17 years and 61 days), Zimbabwe's Hamilton Masakadza (17 years and 352 days) and Pakistan's Saleem Malik (18 years and 323 days) have scored Test centuries on debut at a younger age than Shaw.

Shaw also became the 15th Indian to hit a century on debut and surpassed the likes of Kapil Dev, Abbas Ali Baig and Madhav Apte in the list of youngest Indian Test centurions.

The last Indian to score a hundred on Test debut was Rohit Sharma, who also reached his milestone against the Windies in November 2013.
