Prithvi Shaw: International Career Watch

'More attacking' is the understatement of the year.

No negativity about Gavaskar please. He played according to the needs of the time. India needed not only an opener who would score, but also one who would bat long and protect the Indian middle order from the new ball.

Congratulations to Shaw but an easy debut given to him unlike Sachin, he should had been allowed to debut in England to prepare him mentally.

That was not a shot at Gavaskar.

Prithvi is a premium product of his time as was Gavaskar.

At the risk of getting ahead of myself, if Shaw continues to have a productive run in tests in Australia, then would the selectors consider him for ODIs? Sure we have a settled opening pair (Rohit would still make many a fans nervous) but there's chaos in the middle.

Would it be such a bad idea to find a place for Shaw in the middle? Personally, a top 5 of Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli, Shaw and Rahul looks muscular than what India put out in Asia Cup.

Keeping a quality batsman out because there's no vacancy at his position is rank stupidity and a bad excuse to suffer mediocrities like Rayudu etc.

That would be a World Cup winning squad.

Mamoon MMHS initial thoughts on Shaw? I know its too early but does he look like he can handle the ball outside Asia?

Have to see him more - missed last night's every cricket all together. Start is definitely great.

Good thing about Shaw is he can score at over 100 S/R easily. He has all the shots in the book.

Shaw should certianly be playing ODI's and T20's soon. Don't know when Gill is going to make his debut.

Gill has been consistent but hardly pulling up trees. Very important that he has a FC season that matches or exceeds Shaw's output last year.

Is his batting technique similar to Gavaskar?

I am not following domestics. But is Gill still playing in middle and late middle order? If so, he will never put up big numbers that will catch selectors attention. He needs to play as a top order batsman.

No. He bats in the top 4 in FC and usually opens the innings in List A.

Is his batting technique similar to Gavaskar?

Not in the least. Maybe his cut shot is a little reminiscent of Sunny. And many Bombay school batsmen have that trademark straight drive, including Shaw. But no. Nothing like Sunny.

Gill IMO. But shaw is ahead in development.

I saw gill and he seems to be a clean striker of the cricket ball who can strike around 140 but i havent seen much of gill though but i am impressed by him today that he batted at a god strike rate of 100 in a test match.

Gill IMO. But shaw is ahead in development.

Everyone who saw the U19 WC seems to be of the notion that Gill is the more talented one. But trust me, Shaw is a couple of notches above Gill. He is a special player, like Sehwag. You don't get too many of those kind.

India has been very lucky to find 3 players back-to-back in that mould - Srikkanth, Sehwag and now, Shaw.

Hold your horses and let the kid play 2-3 seasons of international cricket first. Thank you.

Well said. After Vinod Kambli, Wasim Jaffer, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh raina, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Shiv Sunder das..it is only wise...wait, wait...check after 2 years atleast and then make up your opinion.

Dhawan is not going anywhere. He is still a beast in Subcontinent Tests. His problem is overseas Tests.

IMO, Dhawan should concentrate on ODI's and Tests. He is 33. Might have a good 2-3 yrs left before he will be done.

Those cover drives against Paul were a treat to watch.

Windies didn’t have services of Roach & Holder hence Shaw wasn’t tested adequately.

Shaw’s technical glitches:

More often than not his bat comes at an angle (more from gully region)

He must rectify this problem earliest otherwise quality pacers & spinners will exploit this weakness. All ready 3 edges flown through slips/gully.

Nonetheless a great start for the Youngsta.

We all thought the same about Dinesh Karthik some 10 years back. That undeserving joke of a player is now batting at no:4 for India.

He made a.lot of runs in England tour of 2007, which we won, no doubt he is pointless now but he was very good.

My problem is that expectations will skyrocket now. People will expect double century in second test and triple in his third test. By 5th or 6th test, he will be expected to score all of team's runs which is impossible to do.

I just hope he has a good career. He is an exceptional talent but we should not expect too much of him at this age. We don't have to worry too much though, the selectors will make sure his career will be mismanaged like they did with Karun Nair and KL Rahul.

Its high time we stop blaming selectors for Rahul's plight. He has himself to blame. Has got enough chances recently.

Well yes I agree with Rahul, but again the overall selection process is so inconsistent. I agree that besides the 300 Karun hasn't done anything but again, playing him once in 10 Tests and dropping after a failure puts lots of pressure. Now he has been dropped from the squad. There are talks that Rohit might be selected for Australia. Rahul went through a phase where he was badly managed. Now that he has gotten a sequence of chances, he still will feel that a sword is hanging over his head.

This!

Rahul has got more chances than he deserved and he squandered almost every single one of them! And if he is not ready to play in middle order then he deserves to be benched in every single ODI India plays.

Stay as reserve opener forever!

Imagine the 7th Test. They'll expect him to score 1000 runs in a single innings so that the team doesn't need to come out to bat again. By the 8th Test, they'll have expected him to score his 16,000th Test run and already surpass Sachin Tendulkar. By the 9th Test, they'd expect him to become the first man on the universe to score 1 million Test runs.

Indian cricket fans are wise from what I have observed and they would certainly factor in a slump in form for Prithvi. Those expectations you mention won't be brought up till he reaches his 20th test.

Can play percentage cricket and has big shots as well.

50 in 40 balls

This kid is fearless!

I am loving his attitude.

Get him in the LOU team.

A real gem, already looks twice the batsman than some of our famed superstars. If he is good outside Asia, then we are witnessing the rise of a rare talent.

Hey, for it to count you have to produce a post prior to Shaw's debut :)

No I don't, I am not in the business of glory hunting on forums. But those who do make easy target for ridicule.

He's Teenda's second coming, playing style wise anyways. Let's see if he has the choking qualities as well.

Gill on the other hand is a taller version of Kohli.

He seems more like Sehwag.

Gill is definitely a Kohli wannabe.

Hopefully he will perform in alien conditions.

Dhawan/Shaw/Rahul are Bhaijaan’s openers for tour of Australia.

Bhaijaan’s year barting line up for all conditions :-

Dhawan
Shaw
Rahul
Kohli (c)
Pujara (b)
Pant (w)
Pandya

He looks very impressive. If he fails in Australia, he should be persisted with. Backing him to get 1 big score in Australia.

Don't think he will fail in Australia, the pitches here are flat as pancakes the only thing we have now on our pitches is bounce and even that is slippinmg away. Shaw is a back foot player so he will be ok, his test will be against Stac, Cummins etc and how quickly he adjust to the bounce.

Shastri praises Shaw after Player of the Series performance

India's coach was very pleased with the teenaged opener's first two Test matches.

India coach, Ravi Shastri, was full of praise for 18-year-old opening batsman, Prithvi Shaw, after his team’s 10 wicket win over the Windies in the second Test in Hyderabad. Shaw became the second youngest player in Test history to hit the winning runs when he drilled Devendra Bishoo through the covers for four in the 17th over of India’s second innings. Shaw was also given the Player of the Series award.

“He was born to play cricket. He has been playing since was eight. So, that’s a decade in the maidans of Bombay and wherever else. If you look at his game, he is a spectator’s delight.

“When he bats, there is a bit of Sachin, bit of Viru [Virender Sehwag]. When he walks, there is a bit of [Brian] Lara as well. That’s a deadly combination to have. If he keeps his head on his shoulders and work ethic, he has a bright future,”

Shastri also singled out Umesh Yadav for praise after the quick bowler claimed 10/133 in the match to help secure a 2-0 series whitewash for his team. Umesh added four more wickets in the Windies second innings as he showed what he could do after the disappointment of not featuring in the last four Test matches in England.

“I felt very happy for him. It can be a frustrating profession when you have to sit on the reserve bench like he did for four Test matches in England. We knew, and he know that he can play at any given stage, but only eleven can play. I am glad that he grabbed his opportunity with both hands.”

“What this will do is that this will make him believe that he belongs to the best XI that India can put out in the park. He has given us a headache but that’s a very good headache.”

Shastri is also confident of a return to form for KL Rahul after a difficult series for the opener by his high standards. A duck in his only innings in the first Test and just four runs in the first innings of this game put his form in the spotlight, but he made 33 not out in India’s second innings as he and Shaw secured victory.

“I think [KL Rahul] will be fine. He's a world-class player. Sometimes he tries too hard. He works really hard on his game,” Shastri said.

His backfoot punch , cover drives look like Tendulkar's. He has upper cuts and in general aggressive attitude towards batting. That is where he resembles Sehwag.

The only thing I don't like about his technique is that there is a big gap between bat and pad, as a coach of an u/17 team in Australia I have never like my kids having such a big gap between bat and pad.

How difficult is it for him to work on it? Will he be able to fine tune it before Aus tour??

Don't think Dravid wants him to tinker with his technique for now. He is told to carry on till he hits a roadblock.

It shouldn't be too hard, but he needs to fix it very quickly I can guarantee international bowlers are already looking at the videos and woking on plans.

Don't know why Dravid hasn't worked on it already, it's a big flaw of his and his bat seems to come down from gully/second if he brings his bat straight down that should help fix it.

But I was the Indian coach I would definitely be working on it or he will get found out in Australia.

I would say that gap is still less than the gap i see in the batting of KL Rahul, Pujara, Rahane. Rohit sharma et al.

No he doesn't have a gap. He beautifully adjusts his meeting point at the last moment. Only problem is he goes after every ball. Otherwise he is just fine. No different from Sachin or Sehwag in that area. Once in a while they all left some gap.

The perception of gap comes from the exaggerated backlift. He's a compulsive stroke player so he'd naturally have a bigger gap than someone like Pujara.

The same back lift allows Prithvi scoring opportunities where others might be content with blocking. It's a trade-off. Prithvi's defence is air tight when he blocks.

If at all there's a flaw, it's in his right leg not moving well to transfer the weight when he drives the ball on the off side some of the time. It makes him reach out for the ball instead of allowing it to come to him, and upsets his balance.

Other than that, he is solid as.

Good bowlers are going to find the weakness if they haven't already, playing in India like that is ok you can get away with it, but when he comes here we will see how he goes. So far against the Windes he has looked a millions dollars, but sterner test await, always good for a young kid to start off well gives them a lot of confidence.

Just seen his 70 on YouTube this morning, first time I've seen him bat.

Kid is only 18 years old yet played with the poise and assuredness of a seasoned pro. A very fluid strokeplayer. Obviously it remains to be seen how his defence will fare against stronger attacks in more testing conditions but one can see India's system is churning out some extremely impressive talent.

We need to get our act in gear.

Mayank's average of 50 is misleading. Before the last season, his average was 40 or 41, putting him as barely passable domestic bat. That average nudged 50 only after he finally discovered a taste for big runs last season.

Like I said, Mayank couldn't have done anything more over the last 18 months. But the argument that he deserves a chance because Prithvi is only 19 - that's an emotional and flawed reasoning for selection.

What do think now?
Is there any change of heart?

Is there any change of heart?

Right now it is much more likely that they both will play together as Vijay looks very much finished at the highest level and a good outing at SCG and Rahul is going to be warming the bench as Shaw is already first choice.

Change of heart over what? Prithvi is still the first choice opener and a batsman with a higher ceiling. Read my response like a literate person and quit assuming things in binaries.

Let him be tested against quality opposition in tough situations.

Dont hype him like - https://www.news18.com/cricketnext/...-indias-floundering-middle-order-1845675.html

Sometimes i feel Our Media is even worse than Pakistani media in hyping things up.

Shaw and Gill are future legends. Nothing can stop them other than themselves. Pure raw talent. I am the last one to hype anyone. But these two look better than how KOhli was when he started. Kohli as a player evolved over a period. These two already look the part. I have some variables i use to judge their potential. Definitely not hitting the ball for six over long on like we did against KL Rahul, Rohit sharma. I look for their meeting points and their balance while meeting. Also i look for how they judge the length. Gill is a lot more tighter than Shaw. But shaw will soon adjust.

That is not a forgone conclusion. Lets not go into hyperboles calling them legends in the making etc. Over the last few years, I have heard such adjectives for Vijay Zol, Samson, Sarfaraz Khan etc, all of which have amounted to nothing. Even players who have had great starts to their career like Umar Ajmal and KL Rahul are fading.

Let Shaw score consistently in international cricket before we start calling him then next Sehwag. And let Gill have at least a couple of seasons in first class cricket before drafting him in to the Indian side. Even players like Sachin and Kohli played a couple of seasons of domestic cricket before being drafted in to the Indian team.

Special talent. Saw most of the innings. The impressive thing was he was playing proper shots and keeping up with the rate with ease.

Tough times to be an Indian supporter.

Batting talent bahut hai but team selections are the worst.

The likes of Styris and other commentators are just as surprised as we are that India could have a very dynamic batting unit but refuses to do so.

The quicker we can kick the idiot msk prasad and his cronies the quicker we will be a good team.

At times, you see a young player and you just know that he is destined for greatness. Shaw, Pant and Gill fall in that league. These three will carry the torch from the likes of Kohli, Dhoni and Sharma, and be the stalwarts of India for the next two decades.

In fact, they are already among the very best players in the world but they are being held back by India's conservative approach and obsession with experience and seniority.

Shaw and Pant are thriving on the responsibility that DC has given to them, but Gill is being wasted by KKR. Number 6 is too low for a batsman of his style and calibre. He needs to bat in the top 3 - if KKR are not willing to give him that responsibility, perhaps it will be best for him to move on.

I would like to see him bat in tandem with Kohli at RCB, either as an opener or a number three. Gayle, de Villiers and Parthiv Patel do not have many seasons left. Gill would bring a lot of fresh energy to their ageing batting unit.

I keep forgetting that Gayle has moved to Punjab.

Nevertheless, Moeen is not a long-term option for RCB at the top of the order.

Prithvi Shaw has said that working with legends such as Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly has furthered his ability to 'handle pressure' and 'tackle situations' at the highest level.

The 19-year-old has already achieved a lot of success. After a prolific school career, he seamlessly transitioned into his state side Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class competition. He has also earned a couple of Test caps. And in his crowning achievement so far, he led India to the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018 title in New Zealand.

An elegant opener with impeccable timing, Shaw has made strong first impressions at every level he has played in. In his first-class debut, for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 semi-final, he crafted a fabulous fourth-innings 120 to help his team chase down a tricky target of 251.

His India Under-19 captaincy debut was an outright success, as he led them to a 5-0 away ODI victory over England in 2017, before securing dominant victories over every opponent India faced at the Under-19 World Cup. Later that year, he made his Test debut, and scored a fluent 134 against West Indies in his first innings.

Shaw comes off as a technically sound player, full of self-belief and good judgement. Right through his journey, he has had the privilege of learning from the greats of the game. While playing for the U-19 team, he worked with Rahul Dravid, the head coach. Now, at Delhi Capitals in the 2019 Indian Premier League, he benefits from the presence of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly. Shaw said he's always looking to pick their brains for inputs that could further enhance his understanding of the game.

"It's been fantastic," he said on Saturday, 6 April, the eve of Delhi's match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. "They've already played 15-20 years of international cricket. They know how to handle a youngster because they've also been in those days. They know how to handle pressure, they know how to talk to them [youngsters]. Not maybe technically, not on skills, but mentally how to prepare. I just question a lot to them because I want to take all the things they've done - how to score runs, how to tackle situations."

Shaw's T20 numbers are slightly underwhelming – he averages 23.63 in the format, which pales in comparison to his first-class (60.93) and List-A (40.56) numbers. But one can expect him to boost those numbers sooner rather than later.

In this IPL, Shaw has blown hot and cold – he made 99 against Kolkata Knight Riders, but has managed just 42 runs from the other four innings so far. He will have the opportunity to set that right on the batsman-friendly M Chinnaswammy Stadium surface on Sunday.

"I feel that this wicket is going to be good for batting and we are looking forward to some good runs on the board," he said.

Shaw has a hunger for runs and has already given ample evidence of his skill to achieve them. If Bangalore, who have lost each of their five matches, are to reverse their fortunes against Delhi, they will have to devise a strong plan to get the young star out early.

I see more of Virender Sehwag in Prithvi Shaw's style of batting: Brian Lara

Prithvi Shaw‘s phenomenal talent has been much talked-about and the latest to join the bandwagon is none other than Brian Lara, who has found shades of “Virender Sehwag” in Mumbai youngster’s batting style.

Just like Sehwag, Prithvi is also a fierce cutter of the ball and his short-arm pull at times is a carbon copy of the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’.

One of the greatest batsman to have ever graced the game, Lara was all praise for young Shaw’s approach.

“I see more of Virender Sehwag in Prithvi Shaw’s style of batting and think his maturity is amazing,” Lara told Star Sports Select Dugout.

Lara was impressed watching Prithvi score a hundred on his Test debut in Rajkot last year.

“I saw him play against the West Indies last October and he scored a lot of runs. It’s wonderful to see a young player on Indian soil doing so well. He travelled to Australia but unfortunately could not play, because of an injury,” he said.

He is only 19 years but with two seasons of IPL, he is already a “senior player”, reckons Lara.

“I think he has been in the IPL for a couple of years and is a senior player already. A lot is expected of him, he is in a big man’s game now and has got to do what is necessary.”

Should've been in the team playing at 5/6 like Kohli in 2011. Anyway, he should be in the team for the next bilaterals. Unfortunate but no point bringing back Dhawan.
