Patel under pressure as Ukraine visas crisis grows

Home Secretary Priti Patel is under pressure to deliver after the government announced that Ukrainian refugees in Calais will have to travel a further 70 miles to obtain a UK visa in Lille.

A Home Office application centre is due to be opened in the city.

In an effort to get a grip of the growing visas crisis, Boris Johnson has created the post of refugees minister and appointed former MP and businessman Richard Harrington to the role.

Mr Harrington will be made a life peer.

Ms Patel faced pressure from colleagues during Tuesday's meeting of the cabinet: "Priti talked about everything the Home Office was doing but it quickly became clear she was just going round in circles," said a cabinet source.

"Then a series of ministers really drilled down into the detail about what we are doing to get these refugees across - Grant Shapps especially. She squirmed and hated it."
 
So the government has £350 per refugee/room take but not enough to reduce energy bills for UK residents?

When you put others first instead of your own then don't be surprised by the backlash.

Oh I am sure HMRC will tax this £350 in SAs just like they did with Covid payouts.

Disgusting. Then again £350 per room is a small price to pay to import Nazism. Bargain basement prices!

If it's white then it is right!

The whole reason why there are so many afgans in the UK now, is because they were given homes after 9/11
Same reason why you find so many kashimiris here, because ayub khan in the 1960s demolished there villages and houses to build the Mangla dam
The UK over the last 50 years has provided welfare to most war torn countries.Not sure why there is a fuss about this.
 
Those who support Ukraine & Claim they are wealthy should be taking in multiple families for free ? It’s a shame they didn’t have the courage to go & fight , something allowed by the government but they can save the world now .

I don’t support nato foreign policy or nazis so will decline the £350 , besides I’m not vaccinated

Were Brits paid £350 a month of tax payers money to house Afghan or Syrian refugees?

Really?
I didn't know that. The many Afghan friends I have here in london were born here and their parents moved to the UK in 60's and 70's... some moved here in the 80's.
None of them came here as refugees.
 
I would also like to add that most of the Afghans, and no doubt the Kashmiris, took gainful employment or set up business. They contributed ti the economy and we not brought here to live of welfare benefits.

Those refugees fleeing the war, they're dying on the dinghy's ferrying then across the channel.

She will definitely be a part of the Lizz Truss cabinet, any conservative cabinet. A hardcore tory in female ethnic minority clothing..... goldust!
 
Patel meets with Brexiteers as she weighs up joining leadership race

Home Secretary Priti Patel has been meeting with Brexiteer Tory MPs as she decides whether to join the race for the party leadership.

Ms Patel told MPs from the European Research Group that she would back lower taxes but attacked other candidates for pushing "fashionable tax cuts".

"We must make sure tax cuts have touched the pockets of people by the next election," she said.

"When it comes to the fashionable line of cutting tax, we are all Conservatives and believe in cutting taxes."

She also said she would tackle cost of living.

"Everyone will remember what the 1970s were like," she said.

"No one in the party has gripped this and it must be the priority for our party."

The Home Secretary also said the UK had failed on fracking and shale gas and promised to "unpack" green taxes.

Ms Patel said she could win back the "hearts and minds of the party" and mobilise campaigners.
 
The reality is Priti Patel ticks most of the boxes.

Pro Brexit.
Vastly experienced, esp with her tenure as HS.
Tough on illegal immigration.
Despises wokeness culture.
Has the suitable camera optics.
Open to tax cuts.
Loathes the ECJ/EHCR.

She will galvanise the Midlands and North in one swift sweep.

If she does become PM, I reckon she will win with a larger majority than Boris.

The Labour and LD party must be bricking themselves.

Boris was a known buffon before we won the GE by a landslide, all on 3 words - Get Brexit Done.

Brexit is still a hot topic, and reality is if Covid wasn't the news since the GE win, Brexit would be.

Plus don't take my word for it, there's been a more positive public/user comment response in DT and FT wrt to Priti Patel.

Yeah she ticks most boxes except for the fact that she is the most unlikeable person when it comes to public opinion.

Last time I checked public opinion mattered the most.

Public opinion does matter, and when was the last time she was facing the public for votes? Her constituency have voted her for 12 years, and counting. She was the poster girl and one of the lead campaigners for Leave - Brexit wins. She was hand picked by David Cameron, she is dubbed the 'Asian Margaret Thatcher', and above all one of the few MPs who has shown loyalty to Boris.

Her track record is pretty successful when it comes to public opinion thus far.

I forgot to mention, she was a 80 to 1 shot before she announced her 'intention' to run for Tory leadership, and despite her not confirming yet, bookies (BF) now have her at 20 to 1.

As much as it pains me to say the following:

1. Pro Isreal, supported by Isreal; political and MSM support - check.

2. Highly and openly critical of Putin; NATO apologists - check.

3. Supportive of Modi's government; Islamaphobes - check.

I wouldn't write her off if she puts her hat in the ring.

Priti Patel is to resign as home secretary when Liz Truss takes office as prime minister.

Writing a letter to Boris Johnson on Monday afternoon, Ms Patel said "it has been the honour of my life to serve our country as home secretary for the last three years", adding that she will now "champion many of the policies and causes I have stood up for" from the backbenches.

She went on to praise Mr Johnson for getting Brexit done and said together they had been "relentless" in trying to dismantle people smugglers.

Defending the controversial Rwanda policy, Ms Patel continued: "It is vital your successor backs all aspects of these policies on illegal immigration to ensure the full implementation and delivery of the new plan."

Congratulating Ms Truss after it was announced that she had defeated rival Rishi Sunak to become the next leader of the Conservative Party earlier today, Ms Patel said she will "give her my support as our new prime minister".

"It is my choice to continue my public service to the country and the Witham constituency from the back benches once Liz formally assumes office and a new home secretary is appointed," she added.

Ms Truss is due to appoint a new cabinet tomorrow after being formally appointed the country's next minister by the Queen.

It has been widely reported that Ms Patel, who has been home secretary since 2019, was not expected to have been asked by Ms Truss to remain in her position.

Cabinet resignations begin as Truss considers top team - new PM latest

Congratulating Ms Truss after it was announced that she had defeated rival Rishi Sunak to become the next leader of the Conservative Party earlier today, Ms Patel said she will "give her my support as our new prime minister".

It has been widely reported that Ms Patel, who has been home secretary since 2019, was not expected to be by Ms Truss to remain in her position.

Ms Patel had not endorsed any candidate during the Tory leadership campaign.

The rumour is that Ms Truss wants to put Attorney General Suella Braverman - a fellow Conservative leadership candidate - into the department, after polls suggested she was popular among members during the early rounds of the contest.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, Ms Patel was less than impressed by Labour MPs who groaned as she delivered a eulogy to Mr Johnson during home office departmental questions in the Commons, telling them to "shut up".

The MP for Witham has previously been described by Mr Johnson as a "hardline" home secretary.

In April, she signed what she described as a "world-first agreement" with Rwanda in a bid to deter migrants from crossing the Channel.

But the first deportation flight - due to take off on June 14 - was grounded amid a series of legal challenges.

The outgoing PM famously vowed to "stick with Prit" when she was faced with bullying allegations and his then adviser on ministerial standards, Sir Alex Allan, quit his post when Mr Johnson overruled his conclusion that she had breached the ministerial code.

Ms Patel was forced to resign as international development secretary by then-prime minister Theresa May in 2017 over unauthorised contacts with Israeli officials.

Meanwhile, Nigel Adams has also written a letter to Mr Johnson resigning from his role as a minister of state without portfolio at the Cabinet Office.

"Following today's announcement of a new Conservative Party leader, I am writing to resign my role as a minister as I think that it is important that a new prime minister is able to appoint a team based on who they want rather than who they inherit," his letter states.

"Like you, I congratulate Liz Truss on her clear victory."

Praising Mr Johnson for "standing up to Putin's aggression in Ukraine", Mr Adams continued: "I am sure that as your successor, Liz Truss will share your drive and passion to level up our great nation.

"By doing so, we will become not only one of the most prosperous nations in Europe, but one of the finest."

Mr Adams added that those who sought Mr Johnson's demise "do not understand the values and aspirations of those voters who put their trust in the Conservative Party for the first time in 2019".

There is precedent in ministers resigning at the change of a prime minister.

Three years ago, in 2019, then justice secretary and Lord Chancellor David Gauke quit Theresa May's top team after Mr Johnson won the Tory leadership battle.

Ms Truss will officially become prime minister tomorrow, when she will travel to Balmoral to meet the Queen, who will invite her to form a government.

How will Truss do to ease cost of living crisis?

She will then return to Downing Street, where she is expected to make her first speech as prime minister and begin appointing her cabinet.

Attending the Parliamentary Labour Party this afternoon, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer promised his party will "never under-estimate Liz Truss".

"She is a talented politician who has got to the top through hard work and determination. She is nobody's fool and she will do whatever it takes to keep them in power, he said.

"She will dominate the news for the weeks to come. The polls might tighten and her plans might create some buzz."

"But let's also be clear: They are totally the wrong plans for the country."

The Labour leader also accused outgoing PM Mr Johnson of having "done no work".

The cruellest and least competent Home Secretary of my lifetime. Braverman might be as horrible but hopefully a bit more capable. Looks like Truss is going to clear out the Bodge loyalists and bring in talent.
 
I wonder if she had any views other than those she was encouraged to spout on immigration and Rwanda? Always hard to tell with these brown door mats.

Former home secretaries Suella Braverman and Priti Patel have accused British churches of supporting “bogus” asylum claims.

The former top Tories both spoke out in the Sunday Telegraph after the well-documented case of suspected Clapham attacker Abdul Ezedi.

The 35-year-old former Afghani national had two claims for British asylum turned down before he claimed his adopted Christianity left him vulnerable to persecution.

This led to his third application being accepted although it is currently unknown who backed up his claim to have changed religion.

Ms Braverman, now a backbench MP, said that during her time in Cabinet she “became aware of churches around the country facilitating industrial-scale bogus asylum claims”.

She said: “Attend mass once a week for a few months, befriend the vicar, get your baptism date in the diary and, bingo, you’ll be signed off by a member of clergy that you’re now a God-fearing Christian who will face certain persecution if removed to your Islamic country of origin. It has to stop.”

Ms Braverman was sacked in November after she was accused of stoking community tensions in her allegations about the Metropolitan Police.

Dame Priti, home secretary from 2019-2022, echoed the comments and pointed to the example of Liverpool Women’s Hospital bomber Emad Jamil Al Swealmeen.

Al Swealmeen had been confirmed at Liverpool Cathedral in 2017 but detonated the car bomb in 2021.

Witham MP Dame Priti added: “In that particular case [Al Swealmeen] and any other examples where Christian conversion is involved it is right that those cases are scrutinised and that there is a degree of honesty in establishments, including the Church of England as to what their motivations were.

“It’s no coincidence that religious leaders are constantly speaking out against any reforms and work introduced by us as Conservatives in this area.”

In the case of Ezedi, it is not known who approved his asylum or which church he attended with the Church of England saying there is no record of him on their books.

A Church of England spokesman said: “It is the role of the Home Office, and not the church, to vet asylum seekers and judge the merits of their individual cases.”

The home office is trying to throw blame on the church.

If someone comes to the church they arent going to turn them away. A vicar or priest isn't there to judge someones intentions.

It's the home office job to actually analyse and process the claims.

I wonder if Patel and Braverman would be happy for religious institutions to judge their converisons or marriages?

Do Priti Patel and Suella count as the Home Office? If they are using the "Islamic country of origin" to cast doubt on the intent of a man of Christian faith, can we do the same by asking if their opinion might also be questioned due to their Bharati country of origin? :unsure:
