Pakistani police on Sunday clashed with protesters who breached the outer wall of the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, leaving nine people dead, following news of U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Pro-Iranian protesters also gathered outside the Green Zone in the Iraqi ‌capital Baghdad, ‌where the U.S. Embassy is located.

Pakistan has the second-largest Shi'ite Muslim population after Iran. Iraq has the third-largest.

In Pakistan's southern city of Karachi, protesters had been pushed back from the consulate, a spokesman for the local government said, after they set a vehicle ablaze outside the main gate and clashed with police.

At least nine people were killed in those clashes, police said.

Reporters heard the sound of gunfire and saw teargas being fired in streets around the compound. Video footage showed a fire beneath a nearby bridge.

No casualties were reported in the street clashes.

The U.S. Consulate in Karachi and the U.S. Embassy Islamabad Press Office did not respond to requests for comment.

Large protests also occurred in other ‌parts of Pakistan.

Protesters set fire to a United Nations office building in the northern city of Skardu, in the normally peaceful Shi'ite-majority Gilgit Baltistan region known for its Himalayan peaks popular with tourists.

"A large number ‌of protesters have gathered outside the U.N. office in GB and burned down the building," local government spokesperson Shabbir Mir said, adding that no casualties had been reported.

Earlier in the day in the central city of Lahore, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the U.S. consulate. There were some small-scale clashes with police but no reports of violence.

"Some of the protesters tried to damage the security gate, hundreds of yards away from the Consulate. However, police stopped them without use of force," said Aqeel Raza, an eyewitness.

In the capital Islamabad, all roads leading to the red zone, which houses diplomatic missions and parliament, were blocked for traffic or any other public movement, police said.

Good thing is, these storming of consulates are taking place on a sunday. No damage done.

In Lahore, if anyone ends up doing damage, CCD will take care of that person. Same case in Islamabad, but in Islamabad no idiot can enter the red zone just like that.

Karachi is a concern, cause its lawless over there.

Another humiliating day for the illegal immoral criminal Pakistani puppet regime.

Pakistanis killed by Americans in Pakistan.

We even have supporters of these puppets cheering while men killing their own people.

Pakistan doesn’t need to be attacked, it’s sold out a few years ago .

Low iq pakistanis storming consulates are dead.

Hopefully nothing like this happens in Islamabad, as the embassy there is in a protected zone.

They are Shias protesting . A child knows this .

Shias or Sunnis. They are Pakistanis and have right to protest but not like this but you can imagine their anger because their leader got taken out by the devils (US-Israhell), and Pakistan has the 2nd most Shias population in the world.

I got many close shia Pkistani friends, grew up from premier school days with many shias. They are very royal to their leaders/imams.

I am a Shia Muslim Pakistani but my parents are from Iran and India.

Interesting, now that your old Sanatani character is over, can you give more details about your new character? Would be fascinating to see where you go with this one, seems like a face character, but don’t you think you are due for a heel turn to break monotony?

Protest in ISB near US Embassy area , Sanc. 144 imposed but mob gathering , there is Lathi Charge and aerial firing from administration.

Pakistanis are ashamed their rulers are puppets of such warmongers.

It may evolve into a larger uprising against the regime in Islamabad .

I reckon it happened lot earlier, as in, decades ago.

Shias have always been known to be the braver of the Islamic sects. They’re fierce people and very united.

They are very jazbati people that's for sure, when you look at the birth of their sects and the emotion which caused it, this sort of mob protest is a reflection of it.

It is in our blood.
We do have immense respect for our Sunni brothers and believe Islam is the binding force that unites us in this great religion.

Absolutely and to think according to conspiracy theories it was all created by a Jewish spy called ibn Saba
It’s a shame these people don’t get as jazbati for the people of kp and the former pm who are under immense persecution at the moment

Endangering consulates is not right but wonder whether authorities would open fire like this if it were a TLP mob.

We've had plenty of jazbati (to use someone else's phrase) TLP mobs in recent years causing havoc and mayhem. Yet I distinctly remember in 2017 seeing a Pakistani Ranger handing out cash to them on the streets of Islamabad.

The state should be consistent.

Tlp is army controlled. When a govt is required to be thrown out or be blackmailed, they ask them to do a protest on blasphemy, which they carry out. Their man power is madrssah students.

Interestingly, they never protest to consulates in lahore and karachi. Islamabad they know there is a buffer zone where they can be controlled back. So i dont think army has ever allowed them to march to the embassy in Islamabad.

But yes, policy should be same. And while im not aware whats the policy in lahore or karachi, but in Islamabad trying such a move can lead to death. Its a red zone heavily protected area

The state should be consistent.

We saw mob protests by far right sympathisers against immigrants last summer in the UK, but that was one occasion where Starmer dealt with it decisively with firm police action and stark warnings against insurgency.

A police state like Pakistan has no excuse for being lenient on any mob rule. They should not be emulating India where it mob law goes hand in hand with policing.

So, you guys will not protest against military for your own leader getting imprisoned, will not protest against forex deficits, inflation, unemployment etc etc but will get yourself killed for a guy whose country you bombed less than an year ago? Funny way Pakistan works.

Or perhaps it's the case that the Shias are more driven than the Sunnis?

If yes, the Shias need to be told that what is happening to Imran Khan is wrong more effectively than what is being told to them currently.

A lot of Shias I know support PPP;
they're imbiciles but what to do?

P.s
I'm a Shia myself

very sad Shias and PPP supporters, can come out in massive numbers, face baton charges, tear gas, even bullets, the whole package from the government and army.

But 80% of Pakistan that supports Imran Khan are scared

very sad times

😭 😭 😭 😭

Yes & no. It's about context.
Do you know the meaning of Ayatollah?

To these shias he really was their supreme leader and to them this world is just a stepping stone... whereas IK is a beloved sports hero turned philanthropist turned politician who stood up for justice, supporting him doesn't result in a place in heaven.

I am genuinely upset :(

extremely sad days

Pakistanis have affinity to religious extremism. They will get their rights trampled and not protest but a foreign religious leader who has no affiliation to Pakistan will get these idiots to come out and burn down their own country. Bunch of losers

We faced a lot of persecution in this country and yet we gave our everything for this nation.

Our nation couldn’t even honour us Shia peoples biggest icon Dr Abdul Salam despite receiving Nobel prize Sunni extremists dug his grave up. Despite all this we always bled for Pakistan.

Dr Abdul Salam was from Ahmadiya sect, right ?

And how come he is from your country ? Aren't you from India ?

Ayatollah to Shias is like what Pope is to the Catholics.

So, I am not surprised shias are very agitated.

It was a cowardly attack from Israel. Trecherous to do this while a negotiation was taking place.
