In the inaugural edition of PSL, the Kings underwhelmed after a good start, winning only two matches in the whole tournament - both against rivals Lahore Qalandars. This time around, they've strengthened the team with West Indian stars Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard, complimented by a 22-year-old widely considered to be the future of Pakistan's batting - Babar Azam. Kumar Sangakkara takes over the reins as captain; will the host of changes prove to be a success and take Karachi to a victory in 2nd edition of the tournament?

Full squad: Chris Gayle (WI), Kieron Pollard (WI), Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Amir, Ravi Bopara (Eng), Kumar Sangakkara (SL), Imad Wasim, Babar Azam, Ryan Mclaren (SA), Sohail Khan, Shahzaib Hasan, Saifullah Bangash, Khurram Manzoor, Kashif Bhatti, Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Mohsin

Supplementary: Mahela Jayawardene (SL), Usama Mir, Rahat Ali, Aamad Alam

Captain: Kumar Sangakkara

Coaching staff: Mickey Arthur (Head Coach/Team Advisor), Azhar Mahmood (Coach/Team Advisor), Rashid Latif (Team Director/Team Advisor), Shoaib Malik (Player/Team Advisor), Saleem Yousuf (Team Advisor), Jalaluddin (Team Advisor)

The Kings of Karachi will appear in the 2017 edition of the Pakistan Super League as one of the favourites. The sheer number of match-winners and an extremely well-balanced squad are two main reasons for their top billing.

The well cliched "nice blend of youth and experience" will be on display in the team line-up with the legendary Kumar Sangakkara leading the team this year. Whilst Shoaib Malik's previous stint as captain of this team ended in tears last year, in Kumar Sangakkara Karachi will have the services of a top professional who could take his team the pinnacle, provided he can get the best out of some very talented individuals at his beck and call.

The abundance of all-rounders in Shoaib Malik, Ravi Bopara and Imad Wasim should be enough to put some apprehension in Karachi's opponents as any one of these all-rounders can win you a twenty over match with either bat or ball. Whether they can all fit in one team will be a "good" headache for the captain and the vastly experienced Coach Mickey Arthur who will have a pretty good idea to get the best out of these players, especially in conditions in the UAE which will sort the spin all-rounder types.

Mohammad Amir's recent international outings may not have impressed all but many who saw him take that hattrick against Lahore Qalandars last year will know that he will be more than a handful for all batsmen. Add to that the wicket-taking and death-bowling ability of Sohail Khan and backup provided by the likes of Ryan McLaren and you have a decent pace attack capable to shaking any opposition on its day. Usama Mir, the highly rated young leg-spinner who has impressed in domestic tournaments in Pakistan, may also get some games and could be crucial to stemming the flow of runs in the unlikely case of Amir's and Sohail's inability to take early wickets.

The top order batting for Karachi is something of a captain's dream. With the aggressive Chris Gayle and Shahzaib Hasan and free-scoring Kumar Sangakkara at the top complimented by the likes of Kieron Pollard and Shoaib Malik to come down the order, only good things are expected from this batting line-up. Last year Babar Azam was a rookie but this time the ODI record-breaker fresh from some heroic performances in Australia could easily win games single-handedly if provided support by others in the team.

In current Pakistan Head Coach Mickey Arthur and Azhar Mahmood, Karachi Kings will have some heavy duty expertise to call upon in the coaching department. The recent coaching experience with many of the players will be more than beneficial for getting the most out of the team.

As we saw in the 2016 edition of the PSL, having big names in your line-up doesn't necessarily guarantee success. The Karachi Kings will therefore need to guard against complacency if they are to rise up and walk away with the trophy in front of thousands of fans in Lahore this March.

Strengths - Safety in number of experienced big-match performers with Imad Wasim as the go-to guy in times of stress.

Weaknesses - Pace bowling department apart from Mohammad Amir will struggle to do anything of note so a lot will depend on spinners.

Verdict - Lacks the overall wherewithal to lift the trophy but if Gayle and Amir can get going then who knows what is possible?

Key man: Babar Azam

Player to watch out for: Usama Mir

Well its Amir or bust for them. Chris Gayle - somehow is too hit and miss.

What I am really interested is in the team management. Mickey and Azhar - very experienced people in Pak players/conditions

sorry to disagree with key man " babar azam".
sangakara, amir, and shahzaib are the key men they will depend on.

Except Malik, they don't have much of a batting line up.

Gayle, Shahzaib and Pollard are hit and miss.

snaga and mahela are old and useless.

Babar isn't a T20 batsman.

KK is this years IU (hit and miss team) and they will depend on individual brilliance.

Babar "Not a T20 batsman" Azam has a T20 average of 116 after 4 matches :akhtar

You have pudgy Umar Akmal holding up your batting line up. I'd take ATG Sanga over Akmal anyday of the week. Also you completely missed Bopara eh? He on his own is a powerhouse batsman in T20s.

And baat rahi old and useless ki tou may I remind you that LQ is being led by McCullum who is the definition of hit or miss. You also have 'superstars' like Delport. :))

As they say those living in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones.

Yeah, before the bashing of some full tosses against the WI's, he had a SR of 110 in T20's and that is poor.

Also, Akmal is a fantastic T20 batsman with an average of 31 at 132 and need I remind you, he was the highest run scorer in the last PSL.

He played 2 games less than the 2nd highest and 4 games less than the 3rd highest, but still topped the charts.

I would take a random nobody like chris green over grandads like sanga and mahela.

karachi's key man will be Imad Wasim, I'm expecting him to be the highest wicket taker :imad

Very strong team, hope they will bounce back hard and win this year's PSL.

Chris Gayle
Shahzaib Hasan
Babar Azam
Sangakara
Shoaib Malik
Ravi Bopara
Keiron Pollard
Imad waseem
Sohail Khan
M.Amir
Spinner
Syed1 and people say this is a flawed batting line up :)))
Those who got thrashed by Karachi last season are talking as if they've won the tournament last time :))
Bring it on Qalandars will lose again....

Abdullah719 who iare KKs emerging players?? One of whom will be necessary to be in the team..

Let's hope there is no drama amongst the players this time and a change of captain is needed.

Sangakkara is a weird choice as skipper.

I hope Sangakkara will keep, otherwise we'll have to waste a spot on Saifullah Banga something

Sanga is one of my all time favourites but he seems out of touch. Also weird choice as skipper would have preferred to see Babar,Amir, or Imad get the role. Batting is a little hit and miss. Gayle and Shazaib could be dangerous if they fire. Pollard is just hit and miss , can't relay on him . There bowling is strong, sohail and Amir is a good new ball attack. Bopara is a clever operator with his slower deliveries. There spinners will always be in the game in UAE conditions.

I don't see Karchi lifting the tittle but they'll be better than last season.

Tough task for Mickey. Coaching Pakistan and Karachi Kings - obviously a man who doesn't hide from a challenge.

Not sure why anyone is writing off a team with Gayle babar amir and Malik.

It is a coping mechanism because their own team comprises the likes of Azhar Ali, Umar Akmal, Muhammad Rizwan and Sohail Tanvir :))

The Umar Akmal who was the best batsman of the last edition? That Umar Akmal? Azhar won't get many games. Tanvir is decent in t20 leagues. Karachi is gonna get pummelled in this tournament. Babar, Amir and Imad are the only reason I will be watching them.

Hope Babar bats at 3 throughout.. Amir is gonna be the best pacer of the tournament

You guys have Bhatti as well LOL.

Hope you play those young bowlers and Gohar.

This Umar Akmal is twice as fat as that Umar Akmal.

The whole Karachi Kings management should be seriously concerned that aliasad1998 will only be watching for three of their cricketers.

They should be more concerned about how many times they are gonna change their captaincy this time around

Last time I supported them & they finished 4th😩

The draft lottery favoured KK, yet their picks didn't click. Malik, Amir & Sakib failed big time. This year I don't think they have the best 2 squads.

It must really suck to even do worse than a team that changed captain twice LOL

why don't u support us ?

I was close to actually going for Lahore but just preferred Islamabad. If Islamabad don't win I hope Lahore do. They are developing youngsters well, trying to develop there brand as well.

Also like Gohar,Yamin, and couple of others.

Question is.. who will be their foreign picks. Sanga is locked
2&3 Pollard/Bopara/Mclaren
4. Gayle

For locals: malik,amir,babar,imad,sohail,shahzaib

And hasan mohsin. Sanga have to keep

Now.. if we look at team balance.

1.gayle
2.shahzaib
3&4&5 babar, sanga malik. (Too slow for my liking)
6&7 Pollard/Bopara/Mclaren
8 imad
9. Amir
10 sohail/usama (usama if u pick mclaren)

11 abrar ahmad/hasan mohsin

Bopara has to play..the guy is a t20 gun.

Id actualy be tempted to drop Pollard- he has been living off past glories for a long time. Seems overweight too.

Dean Jones wrote an amazing article time ago about the key cogs of t20 cricket, which is literally a manual in how to play t20.
I cant recall exactly but I believe he talked about having
1)A strong top 3
2)A finishing batsman who can smash the ball
3)Spinners who can come in around 10th over and get you wickets
4)Seamers who can bowl at the death..

Karachi has most of those bases covered in Gayle and Babar being 2 of the best batters in the tournament, Imad one of the strongest spinners and Amir/Sohail who will be good up front/at the end.

KK seem to be the least fancied team and whereas I would say they are nowhere near as good as Lahore, particularly as the Windies pair are very hit and miss, KK I easily back over some of the other teams.

Particularly excited to see Babar. Unfortunately 5 teams really does restrict junior talent coming through which is one of the biggest charms of Franchise cricket, as 4 local and 4 overseas internationals means only room for 3 non Internationals and this goes to has beens like Shahzaib Hasan. Would love to see 2 more teams in the PSL.

Why are Qalandar boys getting their knickers in a twist?? We all know what happened the last time we met on the field and that was basically when KK was being held down by only two blokes - Amir and Bopara.

I dread to wonder by how much margin we'll spank you this time around given Maddy, Amir, Mian Malik, Shahzaib & Bopara are all in red hot form.

:))

Dubai weather is fluctuating these days so amir might get a cloud cover to help him if he is lucky

I'd like to see them in the final so we can thrash them.

lolz, at first, i thought, chief destroyer was some ZALMI or UNITED fan,

btw, a honest advice to all the Lahori fans,

go and watch the first few matches in the UAE b4 they face Karachi, don't even think of booking the final in Lahore...(Doctors recommendation)
