In the first edition of the PSL, Peshawar Zalmi were the outstanding team in the group stages, winning six out of eight games and topping the table. However, they lost both the qualifiers in a disappointing manner. With a host of changes giving a new look to the squad this season, can they make it count and win the second edition of the tournament?

Full squad: Shahid Afridi, Eoin Morgan (ENG), Wahab Riaz, Tillakaratne Dilshan (SL), Darren Sammy (WI), Mohammad Hafeez, Chris Jordan (ENG), Tamim Iqbal (BD), Kamran Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Junaid Khan, Imran Khan Jr., Iftikhar Ahmed, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Asghar.

Supplementary: Marlon Samuels (ENG), Andre Fletcher (WI), Mohammad Irfan Khan, Khushdil Shah, Samit Patel (ENG).

Captain: Darren Sammy

Coaching staff: Mohammad Akram (Head Coach/Director), Younis Khan (Batting Coach/Mentor), Grant Luden (Fielding Coach/Fitness Trainer), Ibrahim Qureshi (Assistant Trainer), Bradley Ian Robinson (Physiotherapist)

One of the biggest surprises at the PSL Draft in October last year was the announcement by Zalmi that Shahid Afridi was giving up captaincy to Darren Sammy – the West Indian all-rounder who has lead his country to TWO World T20 titles. The decision could prove to be a stroke of genius, with the new skipper already popular in the inaugural edition of the PSL with owner Javed Afridi proclaiming he should be granted honorary Pakistani citizenship.

At the top of the order, Tamim Iqbal’s presence will be vital as he was the top-scorer for the team last time around; the likes of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal or supplementary option Andre Fletcher are all more than competent options to partner the Bangladeshi. However, Zalmi may rue not having a more explosive option at the top, a la Qalandars’ Brendon McCullum or United’s Sharjeel Khan.

Peshawar’s middle order is stacked, with England captain Eoin Morgan likely to be the mainstay. Newcomers Sohaib Maqsood, Iftikhar Ahmed and Haris Sohail give a wide variety of options to the captain while the likes of Darren Sammy and Shahid Afridi can provide the lower-order impetus. Marlon Samuels is a superb supplementary option, with him having played a major role in both of Sammy’s WT20 title wins. One to keep an eye on would be aggressive young batsman Khushdil Shah, who has recently shown excellent form in domestic cricket.

With regards to Zalmi’s pace-bowling attack, it is largely the same as last year with the exception of Shaun Tait. The team’s top wicket-taker from PSL 1, Wahab Riaz, will be the leader while Junaid Khan’s exploits in BPL a couple of months ago, should also hold him in good stead. Death-bowling specialist Chris Jordan could prove to be a key addition if utilised correctly despite his tendency to leak runs while Hasan Ali is likely to play a bigger part this time around, after having become one of the mainstays of Pakistan’s LOI attack. Darren Sammy and Imran Khan Jr. can be solid, if unspectacular backups.

The spin attack for Peshawar is likely to be led by the young Mohammad Asghar who picked up 11 wickets in an impressive campaign last season. He will also have more than able support from the perennial crowd favourite and a spinner of some repute, the one and only Shahid Afridi. Mohammad Hafeez’s return to bowling could be crucial to finding the right balance while leg-spinner Mohammad Irfan might spring a surprise or two should be get the chance, with his Warne-esque action.

Owner Javed Afridi has always insisted that the Peshawar Zalmi Foundation is based on similar objectives as the Manchester United Foundation and to underline that fact, the franchise has already done a lot of work behind the scenes with their global effort to raise cricket’s profile. Whilst their plan to take 20 young cancer patients to see PSL 2 has won over people’s hearts, the focus will now shift to the cricket where Peshawar Zalmi are considered to have a strong squad with few weak links. If the team clicks from the get-go, they could prove to be a powerful force.

Key man: Eoin Morgan

Player to watch out for: Hasan Ali

i heard umair masood is joining them in squad

Really underachieved in the knockouts last year. Great decision to make Sammy the captain instead of Afridi, but their overseas players aren't as good as those of some of the other sides. A lot depends on their local players.

Unlikely. Some very average players on that roster like Iftikhar, Hafeez, Maqsood, Afridi and others. Looking forward to watching Asghar, Hasan Ali and Haris Sohail on his comeback, like watching Tamim bat, but the rest aren't of the level as their opponents.

They do lack a bit of firepower upfront which would be problematic if the pitches permit higher scores. However, the bowling attack looks pretty strong.

A good team with most basis covered, especially like the variety in the spin department. Asghar the left arm spinner, Hafeez the right arm off spinner, afridi or irfan as leg break opitions.

Tamim can be aggressive as can Kammy and Dilshanif required.

They also have Morgan, Afridi, Maqsood and Sammy down the order so power hitting shouldn't be a problem.

As I mentioned, none of Tamim/Hafeez/Kamran/Dilshan are going to ever be as destructive as someone like Sharjeel, McCullum, Gayle, etc. - but on slower pitches, I think their lineup is pretty good.

Solid squad. No obvious weaknesses apart from the coaching staff.

Really should win it or be close to winning it.

I think this will be Asghar's breakout season, high hopes from Khushdil Shah too

Zalmi has really killed it with the emerging players category with Hasan and Asghar, already first choice players for them

Probably the best squad on papers. Only issue can be their best players (on paper) Are over the hill & in decline. At their prime a team with Afridi, MoHa, Dilshan, Maqsood, JK, Sammy should dominate games in UAE.

Still, I believe they'll make the final this time.

Gayle was anything but destructive last PSL - in fact he was one of the biggest flops of the league.

Dilshan and Kammy just need a few overs to get set - they can be as destructive if not more than Sharjeel and McCullum. Keep in mind McCullum is retired from international cricket so not sure how "destructive" he is anymore...

I know Gayle flopped, talking about ability. Dilshan and Kami are not big hitters like the others though they can play at a good pace when in the zone.

Zalmi supporters like me should forget about winning the title as long as Afridi is there to spoil our chances alone and in a high pressure situation like Semi-Final, Hafeez and Kami will give their full support to Afridi. That's how mentally weak these 3 senior players are.

well Iftikhar is like bradman in domestic ( you can search his records in last domestic season . they all are good players in domestic and they are going to play in UAE not in Newzeland or south africa. so we all know how good hafeez is in UAE he made 4 centuries against srilanka in one series.
Peshawar have best local players .

bowlers options in playing eleven: wahab, junaid, jorden, hassan ali, asghar, hafeez, afridi, sammy,

batsmen: dilshan. kamran. sohaib, harris, morgan, hafeez, afridi, sammy jordan. they all can hit big

very strong team. this team can beat our national team

This team's strength is in all-rounders. Hassan and Asghar are brilliant picks. Add Afridi, Wahab, and Junaid/Jordan. This is a very good T20 bowling attack.

Sammy is the weakest link in Zalmi side. 6'5" of worthless frame.

Can't bat and Can't bowl. Fielding is average. Don't know what T20 leagues see in this guy.

troodon its more his charisma and his captaincy he has won two WT20s

Specialist captain.

He definitely is going to the final right?

I haven't heard it from anyone other than Javed Afridi yet and Sammy's answer in the post match presentation didn't fill me with confidence

I noticed that too.

He said something about having to speak with the boss...

I'm the only person whose team has won the PSL both times.

Congrats to Zalmi and there fans. Well balanced side with natch winners with bat and ball. Also well led by Sammy .

Well deserved winners.
