The advent of COVID-19 during the final phases of the 5th edition of the PSL caused the postponement of the last 4 games of the tournament. It was a time when Multan Sultans were sitting at the top of the table. From all indications at that point, the Multan side was ready to make its push to reach the finals of the tournament and to many in the know, their ascent to become PSL champions was a mere formality. But as we now know, Multan Sultans despite having two bites at the cherry were unable make it to the final and will have to face up to their demons in the upcoming 2021 edition of the tournament as well.

The Multan Sultans have taken the decision to remove Shan Masood as their captain in favour of the newly acquired Mohammad Rizwan who given his recent performances for Pakistan can put no foot wrong at the moment. Whilst Shan did display some good leadership skills and had a good showing with the bat in PSL 5 where he was the highest run-getter for his side, he seemed to lack the ability to take his side over the finish line when it mattered most. This is where Rizwan's presence will and should be felt most in PSL 6. Along with the presence of the evergreen Shahid Afridi as well as the vastly experienced Imran Tahir in their midst and aided by the likes of the fast-improving Usman Qadir in their ranks, Multan Sultans have what it needs to make yet another attempt at the summit this year.

Strengths

Apart from the run-scoring abilities that Mohammad Rizwan will bring to the side, Multan Sultans will be well equipped in the batting department with a host of top-quality match-winners like James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, Adam Lyth, Carlos Brathwaite and Khushdil Shah. The tried and tested skills of Sohail Tanvir, Imran Khan Snr, Sohail Khan will be well complimented by what Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir and Usman Qadir will provide in the slow-bowling department which is bound to make Multan Sultan a formidable opponent for the other PSL sides.

Weaknesses

Head Coach Andy Flower’s main task this season will be to get Multan Sultans to believe in themselves and develop the ability to go all the way and win a tournament. In PSL 5 they almost got to the top but the real question this time is whether the team has the firepower it needs to take on the much-improved outfits like Karachi and Lahore. Shahid Afridi for all his zeal and enthusiasm is a waning force in cricket and Sohail Tanvir is not the surprise package he used to be. Together, the 2 ageing players represent the biggest weakness for Multan Sultans and it's yet to be seen how Shan Masood, given his own recent weak international form and fall from grace, will be able to do something extra special to help his side lift the Trophy in Lahore.

Players to watch out for

All eyes will be on the new talents who have done so well at the domestic level and Shahnawaz Dhani, along with Sohaibullah will be players to watch out for. Mohammad Rizwan whose heroics at the international stage and Usman Qadir who seems to have lifted himself to a different level in recent times will also be worth watching for the Sultans.

Verdict

Multan Sultan's had a great chance to become champions in PSL 5, but they gave it away when they needed to have their A game up and running. Unless Mohammad Rizwan can single-handedly produce some spectacular batting displays this year to inspire his team, one again expects the Sultans to do their bit to get to the play-offs however, the title will continue to remain elusive for them as it has in the past years.

In the first paragraph you talk about how many explosive players they have, but then in the weakness part you question the firepower they have . Is it a strength or a weakness?

I think they have a good chance of winning the tournament.

First para is a generic statement

We dissect the issue again in the weaknesses as a team.

It depends how thier fast bowlers do. They have a decent E category players.experienced players in the team

There batting looks good. May need there batters to bat teams out of the game. I think they can win the tournament but the bowling doesn’t seem strong.

Definitely agree that thier bowling espically pacers dont seem strong.

Am reading that Ali Tareen has parted ways with the Multan Sultans leadership. He has nothing more to do with the Franchise anymore. Apparently he wants to buy his own team himself.

Has Chris Lynn arrived yet?

They will struggle this year the squad is full of old players and not enough power hitters.

An abundance of riches when it comes to leg-spin - will we see Afridi, Tahir and Usman Qadir all play in any match(es)?

I think they have to fit them in . . at least 2 out of the 3 . . definitely gotta have Imran Tahir in there! I'd expect that to happen as the tournamnet goes deep and pitches start to become a bit tired with only 2 grounds . .

Also, its a bit of a nothing attack with Tanvir (way past his best) and the 2 newbies . . they won't do much with that attack . . so need to get their best bowlers in . . who are the young 45 year olds :)

As mentioned in post #1

Weaknesses = Sohai Tanvir

Multan skipper:

"We had initially started to score runs well in our innings but we could not end the innings as we wanted to, and I feel we were short by 10-15 runs, as our plan was to get to round the 170 mark which we felt would have been a good total"

"We had the momentum with us with the help of bowling from Shahid Afridi and the effort of the youngsters; The match had its ups and down in favour of both sides but I do feel that we were short by 10-15 runs"

"This is cricket and there's an element of chance in it, and its all part of the game; We all know that Sohail Tanvir is a match-winner, today he gave away 19 runs in an over but tomorrow he could save 6-7 runs for us too; We will never doubt the ability of Sohail Tanvir as he is one of the best bowlers and has been doing well for a long time but this can happen and its part of the game"

They should play to their strengths- play all their spinners. Batting will be OK, young bowlers need time but they won't get that.

Their pace bowling looks so weak.

They should just stick with 2 pacers and bring in an extra spinner.

The 3 Pakistani pacers figures today:

10-98-1

Sohail Tanvir, SohaibUllah and Mohammad Umar are not going to win you any tournaments.

Rizwan needs some help in batting - he cannot do this alone!

The latter 2 of those names immediately dropped for the next game by Usman Qadir and Shahnawaz Dhani

What were they thinking constructing their pace attack led by a spent Sohail Tanvir?

There batting is really strong, if they had a couple of decent bowler they would be the favourites.

Tanvir, Dhani, Brathwaite bowling at the death trying to stem the flow of runs.

Multan seriously lacking in that department

An experienced bowler like Sohail Tanvir should be doing a lot better.

So far in the 2 matches he has gone for:

3 40 0
4 38 0

A rather disappointed Rizwan speaking at end of the game vs PZ

"I had said earlier that we have to improve our performances in the death overs but we weren't successful in doing this which is part of the game"

"We are bowling yorkers but we are are failing to utilize our skills although we do have experienced bowlers"

"Dhani is a good and a skiddy bowler but unfortunately he could not control the runs in that over"

"Losing the toss is not an issue, in the previous game we were short of 10-15 runs even though our players tried hard - the same happened this time as the match went to the end and slipped out of our hands"

Rizwan is doing well at the front but his team not so.

Sohail Tanvir's exclusion could help but lets see how Sohail Khan does.

Rizwan speaking at end of the game against Lahore Qalandars

"You cannot relax after winning any game, you have to continue to put in the effort to win the next games"

"What we were lacking in the previous games was that we had the game in our hands and we let it go at the end; But today the way Sohail Khan and Shahnawaz Dhani bowled, the momentum went our way and we then delivered with our batting"

"I dont believe that the toss has anything to with winning or losing because we would have done well in previous games if we had bowled well in the death overs; If we bowl well in the death overs then its not easy to chase runs"

"I always look at the strengths of our team before making a decision at the toss"

First win of the tournament - Can Rizwan and Co make it 2 in 2 today?

Mohammad Rizwan after the defeat to Karachi Kings:

The way we started the match everything was going our way but we didn’t end the innings we wanted to, especially the last 30 to 35 balls. But the Karachi bowlers deserve credit for their effort and the way they bowled at the death.

Hard work is paying off for me and I leave everything to the Almighty for supporting me. I just keep things simple and just work hard and try to show bravery.

Everyone can see we have Shahid Afridi and Usman Qadir so we will look at our team combination and see where and if we can fit Imran Tahir into the team.

Mohammad Rizwan speaking after loss to Quetta

"When we talk about deficiencies in our performances, then we must talk about the fact that we need a lot of improvement in our fielding because in T20 Cricket if you continue leaking 4-5 runs here and there, then it becomes difficult to win"

"Because of this the opposing team instead of scoring just 140 against us, ends up with 150; Or when we have them down to 150, they get 170; So such extra 10-15 runs can cause huge damage when it comes to T20 cricket, and this is what we need to improve upon; And also we couldn't construct good batting partnerships which resulted in the match slipping out of our hands"

"Sometimes due to pressure plans don't work as cricket is about handling pressure - so tonight we had planned to build partnerships - but we must give credit to Quetta bowlers such as Nawaz who broke the momentum of out innings"

"I am in a lot of pain, I will go for an X-ray soon and lets hope all is well"

Poor replacements who is Obed and Rahmanullah

Like the new squad obeyd is a good talent. May compliment dhani really well and take a lot pressure of Sohail. Mahmudullah is a solid pick and good to groom some one like kushdil who can copy and learn and become that type of player at least as talent is their. Reemergence of maqsood will definitely improve the chancel as per a solid 2nd half from rossow. Spin is their with the trio of leggies. Getting rid of chris lynn might turn out to be monumental as that open spaces for ex captain Shan who still has a role to speak with rizwan at top. Be aware! Shots be going dum dum! The Afghan boy rahmat ullah is a handful and plenty of pathans to acclimatise him quick.

Shan Max
Rahmat Ullah
Rilee Rossow
Shoaib Max

Excited to see Mohammed Waseem. He was exceptional in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Can this guy qualify for Pakistan ? Would love to see him if he continues that form and aggression.

Shahid Afridi, who appeared in Sultans’ four Karachi-leg matches, has been replaced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s left-arm-spinner Asif Afridi who would be joining the Sultans squad in Abu Dhabi.

Update from PCB:

Multan Sultans include Blessing Muzarabani in place of Obed McCoy

Multan Sultans team entered into the bubble after completing 7 days of Isolation here in Abu Dhabi.

They have a practice session scheduled for today at Sheikh Zayed cricket stadium in the evening.

Shimron Hetmyer, Johnson Charles and Rilee Rossouw will not join the squad for the practice session since they joined the team later on and still have to complete their isolation.

Blessing Muzarabani will start his isolation today and will be available after 7 days.

Hammad Azam & Asif Afridi will be joining the squad as soon as their visa comes through.

Tentatively, Multans Sultans have also scheduled a practice game with Islamabad United on the 5th of June.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz preferred over Shan Masood! So is it the end of the line for Shan now?

Rilee Russow speaking after Match 16 (vs Karachi)

"I played brave cricket just as the Coach and captain had said in team meetings and it came good for me"

Mohamamd Rizwan speaking after Match 16 (vs Karachi)

"Every team tries to go for a win and somethings like the toss are not in your hands and a Champion side is one that is ready to play in all types of conditions"

Pathetic that Sultans don't play Qadir at all. If they don't wanna play him then let him move elsewhere, he is the best T20 leg spinner in Pakistan yet can't get a game for them.

Very good team selection and the dividends are for all to see.

Rizwans calm reassuring leading by example captaincy has been the major difference. Unlike Sarfaraz he has led his side to victory with the bat and with his captaincy

Smart changes for UAE.

Multan Sultans reach their first ever PSL final.

Nice blend of experience and youngsters.

Good team spirit.

Well captained by Rizwan.

Rizwan deserves all the accolades. Best all round cricketer in Pakistan right now

Congratulations to Multan, they've been superb in the Abu Dhabi leg and thoroughly deserve it.

Sultans on the cusp of a first PSL title in their first final. Thoroughly deserved
