PSL 8: Crowd Watch

Maybe its because the Karachi public doesn't resonate with the KK team? They don't feel they own KK team. In IPL too, Delhi doesn't have a loyal fan base. Many Delhites themselves are fans of MI,CSK etc.

Much better experience at pindi stadium this time. Took me 20min from parking to my seat inside. Food was also good. Juices, savour pulao, burgers, pizza, popcorns, fries etc all were available with decent (by local) standards. The only issue I noticed was of over crowding. I saw many people with tickets had to either stand or sit on stairways. PCB should block all free entries facilitated by police & management guys.

The magical impact of Islamabad's thrilling win at home. The tickets of the remaining rawalpindi game are now being sold quickly

KK is generally the least likeable side, full of mercenaries and no local talent. It's unlikely that Karachi fans will come out in droves to get behind this uninspiring team that are constantly losing.

Meanwhile crowds in Lahore and Rawalpindi are raucous.

The KK vs LQ game on Sunday at Qadhaffi Stadium is sold out.

They have arguably the best batter of the season.

Full house in Pindi today for Islamabad United vs Lahore Qalandars.

Very happy to see Pindi, Multan and Lahore truly own their teams.

Karachi needs to be stripped of games in the next PSL.

I'm guessing that when matches are held in Peshawar they will more than likely be full houses?

Quetta and Peshawar will regularly come out to support their local team. Even the Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators game in Pindi was practically sold out because of the large number of pathans living in the Pindi, Islamabad area.

Scrap the PSL Franchise from Karachi.

Absolutely no doubt. Thousands of fans travel to pindi from kpk to support zalmi and they are the most passionate fans I've ever seen.

Another full house in Pindi. This time for the Peshawar Zalmi vs Multan Sultans Game i.e. two non home teams. Karachites, learn

Karachi fans seem to just offer excuses for not showing up at matches in Karachi.

Fans from other cities seem to be filling stadiums even when their local team isn't playing.

Simple solution is to only have a max of 1-2 games in Karachi and to take KK home games to Hyderabad

PSL has a great potential and fan support all over the globe. Even during the worst economic and security situation the country is facing PSL8 has been a great success. Imagine in coming years when ( hopefully ) things will get better , it will be the 2nd biggest T20 league after IPL .

That would mean somebody (anybody!) investing in Niaz stadium to bring it up to standards. When asked about it, the Sindh government and the PCB trade accusations and nothing ever gets done.

It’s so so so important for the PCB to get other venues ready and up to standard. The low Karachi crowds are also because it gets to many games.
If you allow a maximum of 4-5 games per venue, you’ll get packed stadia always.

This is why they need to refurbish Niaz Stadium, Faisalabad and complete (inshAllah) Arbab Niaz stadium in Peshawar.

I would be happy to play the Asia Cup in Dubai as long as the money gained from that is used to upgrade the stadia.

Najam Sethi in a recent interview talked about introducing two more teams into the PSL preferably from Faislabad and Sialkot. He also wants to exploit DTH broadcasting for the PSL in Pakistan

Does Sialkot have an international level stadium?

I can’t see any expansion until PSL10 at the earliest.

Yes, it does and I have played a match there long time ago. But it has not been used for international cricket for long and not sure the condition now . I'm sure its being used for Shadis and Jalsas and will need big renovation. It will need sometime for Sialkot or Gujranwala to host a PSL game, may be 2 years.

There is bound to be bigger crowds when certain players are playing.

The match yesterday had Babar, Rizwan and some quality overseas players.

Karachi is poor in general yes but the reason that their "home" games don't attract much of a crowd is because they don't have any star players. Nobody cares about Imad or Amir and the overseas players are mainly unknown.

In Pakistan the big crowd pullers and brand names are Rizwan, Babar, Shadab and Shaheen.

On a second tier I would put in Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hassan Ali ( still) and perhaps even Asif Ali.

Add some decent overseas players into the mix and people will come and see the teams these players play for.

Karachi has nobody.

Not full today so far - lets see if it build up

One more full house

Full House now for the Quetta Gladiators and Multan Sultans match.

Karachi wallay sharam se doob ke maro. The Punjab leg not only saved the PSL but uplifted Season 8 big time.

Karachiwallas are not very sport loving people in general , that's my impression , unlike people in Lahore, Peshawar and other cities in Northern Pakistan.

All remaining PSL 8 games from this point on are sold out.

Does Sialkot have an international level stadium?

I can’t see any expansion until PSL10 at the earliest.

Old stadium had been demolished and new one is under construction. Phase 1 already completed which included high performance centre, gym, swimming pool & players accommodation. Phase 2 is in progress which includes pavilion, seating (15,000) & playing field. Phase 2 completion date is june 2024. Half of the funds already released.

Bookme's staff has been extremely unprofessional at pindi. They stop scanning tickets for no reason which results in delays outside. That's why you see empty stands during first hour of play. Someone should bring this to PCB's notice.

Does Full House mean sold out? I don't think so. As their are still quite a few empty seats in the stadium.

I think what they mean by full house is it's a good environment with almost every ticket sold out.

Some spectators prefer to stand and go close to the railings rather than sit in the seats. Others prefer to congregate and walk around to other parts of the stadium with their friends. The bookme site usually has shown no tickets available whenever the games have officially sold out.

Wow that's great then. Apart from the Karachi games, I guess almost all matches were sold out. Good news for PCB wallet.

*Good news for the franchises wallet. Unfortunately, they take the majority of the gate receipts.

The franchises have requested the PCB to adopt the regional financial model where every franchise pockets hundred percent of the revenue from their home games. I think that is a fair demand and the PCB should accept this demand with the condition that the franchises fully market the league in their home city and take full hundred percent responsibility for attracting their fans to the stadium for their home games.

Final game of the PSL in Pindi which was also a day game was also sold out today.

Pindi, Lahore and Multan have done the PSL very proud. Not more than 2-3 games in Karachi for the next PSL.

Karachi Kings will go bankrupt if this happens. They have no loyal fanbase.

Another full house in Lahore today for the final group game. Lahore Lahore Hai, Karachi bekaar hai.

Hard, hard disagree.

Are any of the franchises going to take up any of the capital expenditure costs for said stadia? Are they going to do anything to improve the fan going experience?

It’s easy for the Rana brothers to say this, because they have the biggest fan base in Lahore and the biggest and best stadium in Pakistan, where the PCB have already renovated the dressing rooms.

What about Karachi, Pindi and Lahore. Every venue has different capacity.

And where does a Quetta fall into this, with Balochistan’s tiny population and no current chance do see Quetta play in Quetta? If they play in Karachi, how is the revenue split with KK?

And how does Peshawar factor into this?

Having a regional model will immediately bring a disparity in revenue between franchises. Which in turn will affect the playing squads. 100% you cannot have that.

According to media reports, all the franchises have unanimously demanded the regional revenue model. There must be a reason why they are demanding this. The PCB is working towards getting the Peshawar and Quetta stadiums ready for next seasons PSL.

Sethi also wants to urgently add a team from Faislabad, Sialkot or Muzaffarabad as these cities have ready stadiums therefore they will be in an immediate position to host their home games. Having more franchises will mean more games, more opportunities to give chances to international and domestic players and the PCB will be in a better position to negotiate a better broadcast deal for the next cycle.

That would be wonderful, Faisalabad and Sialkot, almost guaranteed full house on all the games.

Who will bear the logistical cost of hosting the matches ?. The se unity cost ?...the expense of hosting matches?....plus the day to day expenses of the stadium in question.....right now the local admin is bearing all costs associated with the stadium n holding of the matches as the stadiums except khi are the property of the local admin.

Even if pcb agrees to such an undertaking even then the franchises will have to loop in the local admin n the local govt./admin would want a share of the profits as after all its their property.

So too many ifs n buts that need to be worked out to make it viable option for all concerned

PCB Management Committee applauded the PCB on the resounding success of the HBL PSL 8 to date, which has attracted full houses in Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi, and nearly 70 per cent crowd turnout in Karachi.

So they applauded themselves? 🤔

70% crowd turnout in Karachi? What are they smoking? If anything, Karachi needs to be punished for the next PSL with not a single PSL game being allocated to it next season.

Do you foresee Arbab Niaz and Bugti being venues next year? Because that would reduce the games at Karachi. If you reduce the saturation (I.e. restrict Karachi to 5 games, mostly played on the weekends) you’ll get full houses.

Also, the construction of the Bahri’s town Rafi stadium is going well. InshAllah all going well, that stadium should be complete by 2025. Having a better match going experience at that new stadium will hopefully draw more crowds as well.

I'm not sure where they got the 70% figure from because the stadium didn't look anywhere near 70% full for most of the matches in Karachi.

There are other Stadiums in Karachi too i.e. Moin Khan Academy, Naya Nazimabad Stadium, DHA Stadium. Why doesn't the PCB look to host games there? People complain about the National Stadium location being inconvenient but these stadiums are appropriately located.

Yes, build a grassy stand there to accommodate 500-1000 ppl which should be enough for karachi. Otherwise, it would at least look good on tv.

Hardly any crowd at the moment and we are 15 mins from the toss.

Crowd looked like 60-70% max today which for an eliminator is shocking. The Zaman Park assault has killed the enthusiasm for the tournament.

I thought Sethi said that PSL playoffs will be enjoyed by full house crowd and 100 millions around the world.

Lahore has issues. Traffic mayhem and uncertainty around the political situation is not helping.

Crowd building up today at the GSL but nowhere near full yet.

Lol, not a full crowd today at Lahore but perhaps 90-95% full. The PCB posted awesome crowd today.

Najam Sethi today:

"The HBL PSL would not have been this successful without the love and support that it has received from the fans. We had turnout of 80 per cent on average and at times, it went to 95 per cent. It is their support that has turned the HBL PSL into a global brand. The new levels of interest and following has seen record ticket sales, record crowd turnout and record digital and TV ratings, which has not happened before"

Civil war is breaking out in Lahore but more people turn up to the PSL game in Gaddafi stadium then they do in Karachi.

Karachi should really be discontinued as a go to destination for PSL and International games, it's not good for the PCB image. They would get more return on their investment if they play in Faisalabad and Sialkot instead of the empty stadiums of Karachi.

Not a full house crowd like Sethi claimed.

It’s the Pakistan Super League, not the Punjab Super League.

"this was my first experience of cricket in Pakistan and it certainly didn't disappoint. The noise today was something I haven't experienced for a long time. Incredible, it's been an honour to play over here and you just see the passion for cricket" - Sam Billings

I would say 98-99% attendance for the final which is not bad considering the conflict between the PDM and IK in Lahore

At one point, 11.6 million people were watching the final live on daraz app. Insane numbers.

Pakistan had a dismal home international cricket season, but over the last five weeks stadiums in four major cities were packed with thousands of spectators to witness a quality brand of modern-day Twenty20 cricket.

Over 25,000 spectators -- mostly supporting the home team Lahore Qalandars -- saw their team edge out Multan Sultans by just one run in an epic final at Gaddafi Stadium and became the first Pakistan Super League franchise to successfully defend the title in eight editions of the tournament.

The vociferous crowd got behind Pakistan premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi-led Lahore which beat Multan Sultans, led by one of world’s top T20 wicketkeeper-batters, Mohammad Rizwan in a last ball finish.

Only hundreds of spectators had turned up during Pakistan’s home international cricket season in stadiums with Pakistan drawing four test matches and losing three beside finishing on the wrong side of the result in five of the eight T20s internationals it hosted.

But fans came out in big numbers at Karachi, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Multan for the enthralling PSL games that also featured Peshawar Zalmi, captained for the first time by Pakistan all-format skipper Babar Azam; two-time champion Islamabad United and former title-holders Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators.

When the Pakistan Cricket Board conceived the idea of PSL, it’s primary objective was to bring back international cricket which was suspended since 2009 when terrorists attacked a Sri Lanka cricket team bus in Lahore. Gradually foreign teams started touring Pakistan and after hosting the first season of PSL in the United Arab Emirates, the PCB brought back its premier T20 league back in the country.

“The league has now grown bigger and stronger by the year,” PCB Managing Committee’s head Najam Sethi told the AP. “The credit for this goes not just to PCB but also to the passionate cricket-loving Pakistanis who have thronged to the stadiums for the eighth edition (of PSL).”

Sethi, who is also a renowned journalist and had previously served as chairman of the PCB, was reappointed at the helm of the PCB late in December last year in place of Ramiz Raja.

Sethi recognizes Pakistan’s economic problems along with political unrest, but believed the PSL could still turn into a brand in its own right. Sethi claimed at times, during the eighth edition of the tournament, it attracted more eyeballs around the world than the India Premier League.

“At halfway stage of PSL8 I was told by my team that our digital numbers had hit 150 million. The figures in IPL, during the same stage of the tournament, were 130 million,” Sethi said.

The PCB head said he was “shocked” when he was told that only $100,000 had been set aside for the branding of PSL in late December. Sethi increased the money to $1 million after convincing the six franchise owners to bear half the amount.

“I went to Dubai and saw all the drafts (of branding),” Sethi said. “I went through all the technical details, approved it and increased the branding budget to 10 times.”

Sethi is interested to add two more teams, with the approval of six present franchises, in the PSL and make it a bigger league.

“It should be a win-win situation for everyone,” he said. “Next month we will decide how to add two more teams and after 10 years how to tweak the model of PSL.”

It is the first time that the PCB organized PSL at four venues with Multan and Karachi hosting the first leg of the tournament before the league was moved to Rawalpindi and Lahore.

Sethi said it was tough learning for the PCB to organize 34 league games in four cities, but it has given them enough experience, if in future, it hosts the event abroad with United States as one of the potential venues.

“We were managing two production teams and many a time the turnaround time was very tight, but their undying spirit and resolve made sure that we never faced any obstacles,” he said, adding that the PCB even sought help from Pakistan Air Force, which provided a C-130 aircraft on a short notice when production equipment had to be transported from Karachi to Lahore during the tournament.

The quality of cricket played during the tournament also impressed Sethi with most of the Pakistani players dominating the tournament. There was a run-fest in Rawalpindi where a T20 world record 515 runs were scored in a game between Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators with opening batter Usman Khan scoring the fastest ever PSL century off 36 balls.

Multan also chased over 240 against Peshawar in Rawalpindi, while Jason Roy of England recorded the highest ever individual PSL score of 145 not out while representing Quetta against Peshawar in another over-240 run-chase.

Multan’s two fast bowlers Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah finished as tournament’s top wicket-takers, claiming 23 and 22 wickets respectively with Afridi also recording the only hat-trick in the tournament.

“We produced pitches that supported batting and bowling and provided perfect setting for evenly contested matches,” Sethi said. “Never before we saw as many as seven centuries being scored in one edition of PSL.”

PSL might still be far behind the cash-rich IPL, but it has made several stars not only for Pakistan but for other countries like Harry Brook of England, Tim David of Australia and revived the international career of South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw.

“PSL has been a great asset globally, but obviously also for Pakistan,” Sethi said.

Full marks to the crowd for supporting the league and making it a success. You guys deserve all the recognition.

I think everyone will be curious how much PCB made in total from gate money? Specially with fees hike and great attendance. That's major revenue stream.

I just wish attendances for Test cricket were just as good in Pakistan.

The answer is to have tests in Pindi and the lesser used venues (Faisalabad and Peshawar). People that are starved of cricket will then attend. We can question Karachi crowds, but that venue has seen an insane amount of cricket.
