Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020/21 | Round 3 | November 06-09, 2020 | Matches Thread

Centuries by Sarmad Bhatti and Hammad Azam gave Northern a firm grip on their third round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Sindh at the UBL Sports Complex on Sunday.

Northern set a daunting 423-run target for Sindh, who were 77 for three before stumps were drawn.

Northern’s Sarmad Bhatti turned his overnight score of 13 into a brilliant 108 as the left-handed batsman recorded his first-class career’s fourth century. The 29-year-old crunched 13 fours and tw0 sixes and, over the course of his 226-ball stay at the crease, stitched a crucial 156-run stand for the sixth wicket with all-rounder Hammad Azam, who stroked a 120-ball 100 not out.

Playing his 100th first-class match, Hammad smashed 12 fours and three sixes on way to his career’s seventh century following which Northern declared their second innings at 311 for six. They had resumed the day at 45 for three.

Sindh have been dealt with the blows of Khurram Manzoor (15), Sharjeel Khan (12) and Asad Shafiq (one) in their ongoing run chase and will be pinning hopes on Saud Shakeel, unbeaten on 46. The three wickets were shared by Aamer Jamal, Nauman Ali and Mohammad Nawaz.

When play resumes on Monday, both Sindh and Northern will be vying for their second win of the tournament. Sindh require 346 more runs, while Northern are seven wickets away.

At the National Stadium, troubles compounded for defending champions Central Punjab as Balochistan were leading them by 225 runs.

In the broadcast match, produced by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Balochistan, in their second innings, had managed 170 for seven by the close of play with Kashif Bhatti, who scored a fighting unbeaten half-century in the first innings, and Usama Mir not out on two and one.

Ali Waqas and Taimur Ali were the notable run-getters for Balochistan with 39 and 34, respectively, while all-rounder Amad Butt followed up his career-best innings figures of six for 57 with a 50-ball 26.

The 25-year-old Amad allowed Central Punjab to add only 47 runs to their overnight score of 204 for six. The right-arm pacer took all of the Central Punjab’s remaining wickets and recorded his career’s fifth five-wicket haul.

As Central Punjab were dismissed for 251 in 75 overs, Balochistan added two more bowling points to take their first innings bowling points tally to seven (three batting points and four bowling points). Central Punjab added another point for breaching the 250-run barrier and took theirs to five.

Central Punjab pacers Waqas Maqsood and Ehsan Adil, who have taken two wickets each in the second innings, will be eager to wrap up Balochistan’s innings without leaking too many runs so their batsmen can look to secure their maiden win of the season.

Southern Punjab were 13 for no loss in five overs against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and needed 250 runs to secure their third win in as many matches.

The Hussain Talat-led side were set a 263-run target after half-centuries from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Musadiq Ahmed and wicketkeeper-batsman Rehan Afridi helped them post 246 all out in the second innings in the match, played at the National Bank Sports Complex.

Southern Punjab could bat only 7.3 more overs after resuming the day at 257 for six thanks to off-spinner Sajid Khan, who dismissed all remaining four batsmen. They were all out for 288, which allowed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bag four bonus bowling points after they had pocketed two for batting yesterday.

Mohammad Irfan added only two more runs to his overnight score as Sajid Khan, who returned six for 71 to record his second five-wicket haul of the tournament and fifth overall, dismissed him at 73.

When Khyber Pakhtunkhwa batted for the second time in the match, Musadiq, obliged his head coach Abdul Razzaq, who had him called up from the Second XI side to boost the batting department, with a 184-ball 86. The right-handed batsman struck seven fours and three sixes, which were the only maximums in the innings.

Zohaib Khan, another player called up for the third round, and Rehan Afridi made solid contributions in the middle-order. Zohaib struck six boundaries in his 64-ball 40 and Rehan spanked nine fours on his way to 51.

The majority of the damage was done by Mohammad Abbas, who picked up four wickets for 39 runs to finish the match with 10 more wickets in his account.

At UBL Sports Complex, Northern chose to bat:

Northern 328 all out, 91 overs (Mohammad Nawaz 73, Hammad Azam 64, Umar Amin 62; Aamer Jamal 24, Nauman Ali 23; Sohail Khan 4-52, Tabish Khan 3-41, Fawad Alam 2-24) and 311-6, 88.1 overs (Sarmad Bhatti 108, Hammad Azam 100 not out, Mohammad Nawaz 36, Asif Ali 22, Umar Amin 20; Mohammad Asghar 2-87)

Apart from Hussain Talat, it has been a flop season for all young batsman

Good performance by Ahmed Safi for CP. 3-56 in the first innings and 4-31 in the second innings along with 22 runs contribution with the bat in CP’s first innings.

Asad Shafiq fined for code of conduct breach

Karachi, 9 November 2020:

Sindh batsman Asad Shafiq has been fined 20 per cent match fee for a level 1 offence relating to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during his side’s first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Northern at the UBL Sports Complex.

The incident happened on Sunday (third day of the match) when Asad showed obvious disappointment and verbally questioned the umpiring decision when he was given out LBW in the 15th over of Sindh’s second innings.

Asad was reported by on-field umpires Faisal Afridi and Saqib Khan at the end of third day’s play for violating article 2.8 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player support Personnel.

Asad accepted the charge and the sanction handed out by match referee Mohammad Anees hence there was no need of a formal hearing.

One more thing this season confirmed is that Asad and Azhar are not far away our best test bat's after Babar and selecting a new bie in their place will not cause any massive issues with the strength of our line up.

Yasir will be completely toothless in New Zealand. On their tiny grounds an accurate finger spinner is probably a better option.

Saud Shakeel playing a lone hand. Needs to be on the plane to New Zealand. Shafiq has got to go. Concerned about Abid Ali as well, doesn't appear to be in great form at all.

I think age is catching up to Kamran Akmal. The guy used to be a beast in domestic but he looked off color during National T20 cup and now in this year's Quaid e Azam trophy, he hasn't performed at all.

He'll be 39 officially in two months. So, the end is very near for Kami bhai. :kakmal

Fantastic to see all results are still possible at Tea on Day 4 (except Sindh chasing 400 vs Northern).

Pitches are much more result orientated this season.

match ends in draw between blo and cp , azhar 95 not doesnt look happy. he probably wants to bat couple more overs

can anyone please tell me why Azhar Ali accepted drawn they needed 40 odd with 3 wickets in hand?

Probably light - it was 75 overs to be bowled, but in November I don’t think you can play beyond 5:30 even in Karachi. Such a shame, I was actually watching Azhar batting well after some time.

The fielding skipper didn't want to switch to spinners and the umpires were forced then to call it off for the day

What do you think of the pitches this season ? In all three matches, all results were possible going into the last session of Day 4 which suggests PCB are getting the balance right.

Average 1st innings score is nearly 300 which is close to the average for domestic FC tournaments around the world.

I would like to see a bit more carry & pace on the tracks. Almost all the bowling heroics are from spinners and take out Abbas’s 10for, I don’t think any pacer is there in top 10. That’ll help scoring rates as well.

Northern captain Nauman Ali bowled his side to a dominating 128-run win over Sindh on the final day of round three of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the UBL Sports Complex.

The left-arm orthodox took five wickets for 95 runs to record his second five-wicket haul of the match and 15th of his first-class career. He finished the match with 10 for 157.

Nauman, who had the most wickets in the 2019-20 edition of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, now has the most scalps in the ongoing tournament with 25 wickets at 16.72 runs per wicket.

Mohammad Nawaz, also a left-arm orthodox, took two wickets for 48 runs.

Saud Shakeel’s gallant 174 went in vain after Sindh resumed their innings on 77 for three. The 25-year-old had begun the day at 46 not out before stroking his way to his ninth century at this level. Saud faced 296 balls in total of which 27 were hit for boundaries.

Fawad Alam, with 36, was the only other notable run-getter in the innings.

This was Northern’s second consecutive win in the tournament, following an innings and 96-run drubbing against Southern Punjab in the opening round of the tournament.

Northern pocketed 24 points – 16 for outright win, three for batting and five for bowling – from the win. With one batting point and three bowling points, Sindh added four points to their tally.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s points tally received a massive boost as they rolled over Southern Punjab by 75 runs at the National Bank Sports Complex. This is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s first win of the tournament.

Southern Punjab resumed the day at 13 for no loss in their pursuit of 263. Spinners Khalid Usman and Sajid Khan shared seven wickets as Southern Punjab, who had won both of their previous matches, were bowled out for 187.

Khalid’s four wickets cost 50 runs, while Sajid followed up his career’s fifth five-wicket haul (six for 71 in the first innings) with three for 63. Pacer Usman Shinwari took two wickets for 30 runs.

With a 130-ball 56, wicketkeeper-batsman Umar Siddiq was the top-run getter for his team in the second innings, while opener Mukhtar Ahmed, who was not out on eight overnight, scored 38.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gained 22 points from the match (16 for outright win, two for batting and four for bowling). Table-toppers Southern Punjab could add only five points (two for batting and three for bowling).

Central Punjab captain Azhar Ali helped his side secure a draw against Balochistan at the National Stadium.

Set a target of 269, Central Punjab had lost both their openers – Ahmed Shehzad (15) and Abid Ali (10) – by the end of the first session with the scorecard reading 31 after Balochistan added 43 runs to their overnight score of 170 for seven to post 213 all out.

Azhar anchored Central Punjab’s innings with an undefeated 184-ball 95, which included 11 fours.

Over the course of his stay at the crease, Azhar crafted solid partnerships of 59 and 82 with Usman Salahuddin (27) and Mohammad Saad (47) for the third and fifth wickets. Central Punjab were 225 for seven in 66 overs when the match was called off due to bad light

Pacers Khurram Shahzad and Amad Butt, who had recorded his career’s best figures of six for 57 in the first innings, took two wickets each.

Central Punjab, who continue to remain at the bottom of the points table, added 10 points (five for draw, three for batting and two for bowling), while Balochistan, ranked third, bagged 12 points (five for draw, three for batting and four for bowling).

The first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy takes an 11-day break during which HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 playoffs and final will be staged at the Karachi’s National Stadium. The first-class action will resume from 20 November in Karachi.

What a knock by Saud Shakeel 174 with a team score of just 294 shows that he carried the bat all the way. needs to replace Asad shafiq In the national side . Asad shafiq can’t even score in domestics should be dropped but knowingly Misbah will select him and play him in the 11 and will be happy to bench any youngster for him.

Btw what happened to Haris Sohail, can he come back from injury to board the plane to NZL or even ply the PSL playoffs.

I dont think he is fit enough for test cricketer and should not be in the squad we have to many players who are using up spaces in the squad
