I've been fortunate enough to operate previously as a GM in Cricket. For me, the profile of a player is really important. Many times that profile is derived from who you are and who you want to be. As Pakistan reboots again here are some of the intangible qualities I would look at as part of the team building process.

1. Fearless
2. Coachable
3. Good Teammate
4. Work Ethic
5. Committed to Winning

We're not spoilt for choices as is. There's already limited amount of talented players back home with runs / wickets to back it up, if you focus on qualities you listed as well as playing merit the number will dwindle down even further.

You need to induce these qualities from the most basic cricket scene in schools or wherever when the kids are in their developmental phase, that's where fearlessness, winner mentality and playing for the team is learnt. You can't teach that to a 18-20 year old guy. Work ethic can be learned, just ask Virat.

You first need a leader. Despite the poor performance of West Indies in the world cup i liked how Holder mobilized his side to beat England in the test series and drew in the ODI series. Leading a West Indies side is harder given that players come from different countries in the islands they tend to form cliques. They need someone like him. A calm headed leader with ruthless attitude to win matches. Then earn respect by setting an example. Holder did that with a double hundred. I know you guys don't watch IPL. But Rohit sharma is such a brilliant captain who never loses his temper, never loses hope and always looks to make the most out of a given situation. Create an environment where players feed of success of each other. I know when it comes to fighting for the same spot with another person there is a tendency to feel insecure. It is the responsibility of captain ease the situation and make everyone feel secure.

Cant field chokes while chasing yawns in pressure game and claims to be blessed in all facets

What about command of English or his own mother tongue? Does he need to be a good communicator?

With all due respect, what pak needs are :
1. 6 batsman who can actually bat at a run a ball.
i.e. being able to play drives, cuts, pulls, hooks and sweep the ball.
These are basically ALL the shots in cricket as opposed to pak players favourite 2 shots block and hoick the ball in the air!
Also, have the basic skill to run between the wickets, when taking a run!

2. Bowlers who can bowl and take wickets with the NEW BALL!
bowlers that can bowl decent line and length and bowl in the corridor of uncertainity as well as bowl at the wickets.
And NOT bowl short and wide!
Spinners who can actually spin the ball!

3. Fielders who can actually catch and can actually jump around and run and field!

Once we have players who can actually do these basic things, then we will starting winning again!

100%.

I would add however that a great leader also trusts his team.

Pakistan has all that, it's just when our leaders/management force players to play outside their natural game, whether with bat or ball, then it signals the demise of the player's mindset. We know the rest.

Leadership and mindset are everything in Cricket.

On serious note I agree with above points.. you need minimum 3-4 genuine world class batsman.. bowling in Pakistan eventually takes care of itself

The true meaning of fearless cricket should be taught to the youngsters. Many youngsters think being fearless is about being reckless, which is completely wrong. Being fearless is about not letting the importance of the occasion get to your head.

Good point M8....but not easy to find that balance, that equilibrium...takes years, experience....
for qualities - i'd put work ethic, readiness to sacrifice ..on all fronts...., a calm head...intensity and seriousness whilst training, ....a vision, aburning desire to be the best....this is in additon to your bowling, batting , fielding W/C skills

Like some other asked, please explain the meaning of fearless what a fearless cricketer is and what he does differently from a fearful one? In my understanding, fear is not something negative, and it is a useful fact important evolutionary trait in human beings. Is a level headed human nature not more helpful than a fearless for sports like cricket end of the day they don't have to go on war?

We need fearless cricketers who are willing to play for their country and not to save their stats. We also need players who are willing to be aggressive and give their 200% effort on the field and motivated to stay fit and not yawn in the middle of a high pressure game. We are still stuck in the past and playing like it is 1699. Also we need good coaches who don`t laugh and smile when we are getting thrashed in a pressure game and pick the right players and groom young talent for upcoming tournaments. We need our players to improve on their game when they are in good form unlike most typical Pakistani players who have a purple patch and then think that they are the best so they stop trying hard and practicing thinking that their number 1 ranking will carry their lazy ***** around and expect to keep their form. I`m looking straight at you Hasan Ali. Also improve our domestic structure, I have seen a tower made out of landfill with better structure then out domestic cricket. Also we cant have our players be playing tape and tennis ball as that really screws with your timing and leather ball performance. We also need good leaders who can motivate and use their brain to win games and have good tactics and strategy in mind and know what they are doing. My Cat was confused out of his mind when he saw Sarfraz`s decision making. Also we need selectors who don`t select 50 year olds in a tournament expecting them to perform and make an impact and on top of that don`t "fast track" their 5 year old from a living room cricket match into the world cup squad and dropping their best odi bowler just for. We also need bowlers who know how to properly take advantage of the new ball and not bowl wides or freebies to the batsman. For gods sake if you want to swing the ball point the seam to the slip fielder not to the god damn non strikers end stumps!. Our bowlers have scored more centuries and runs than any of our batsman combined this tournament. I would rather watch a Mexican cricket match then this failed comedy sitcom.

Moving forward Pakistan need to make their team Batting heavy stop giving out ******** about Pak being a bowling heavy team. Stop living in the past, bowling will come goood if they have confidence in their batsmen.
Reduce the number of coaches, have one coach who can work as batting coach as well. Save money in national side and use that money for a better coach at under 19 level.
Selectors to have strict instruction of selecting 8 pure batsmen in team of 11, 2 all rounders and 5 bowlers for any upcoming series. Pakistan should play batting heavy team so batsmen can play with more flair n confidence.

Lastly domestic cricket, need to invest in it, make grass root level strong, also dont select any player in national side who is not fit. even if players like harris sohail score tons of run in domestic dont select them set an example.
