Foreign players’ pullout cost us the final: Richards

Head coach of Quetta Gladiators Sir Viv Richards has blamed their foreign players’ last-minute pullout for the loss to Peshawar Zalmi in the recently-held Pakistan Super League final in Lahore.

Full-strength Zalmi, led by West Indies’ Darren Sammy, who had all their foreign players for the final, simply outplayed a depleted Quetta Gladiators side by 58 runs in the high-profile final staged at a jam-packed Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday night.

The England trio of Kevin Pietersen, Luke Wright and Tymal Mills, South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw, Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera didn’t come to Pakistan to represent the Gladiators in the all-important final.

They were replaced for the final by Bangladesh’s Anamul Haque, Sean Ervine of Zimbabwe, Morne van Wyk of South Africa and West Indies’ Rayad Emerit — all little known players compared to the first-choice campaigners.

“The new [foreign] players [who came in for the final] had not practised with us,” legendary Richards said while talking to a private news channel.

Commenting on the recent PSL spot-fixing scandal that resulted in provisional suspension of some Pakistani cricketers, the 65-year-old Richards said in his times cricket was considered a “gentleman’s game”.

“The new money in the game of cricket has changed its dynamics. Match-fixing is not good [for the sport]. In our playing days, we didn’t even know what fixing means,” Richards said.
