"Quite embarrassing for me being an ex-Pakistani player, captain to see" : Wasim Akram on Ind-Pak

Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has urged his teammates to learn from India, who he said was the best side in the world.

Pakistan were thrashed by India on both occasions in Asia Cup 2018 and their heavy defeats led to a lot of gloomy faces and severe criticism from former cricketers.

"They were equally bad in every aspect of the game. It was a below par performance by Pakistan. They should have known the conditions and should have bowled first. It's their home ground," Akram told India Today in an exclusive chat.

"It's very disappointing, disheartening. I can understand winning and losing is part of the game but not like this. This has been a one-horse race. India have been just incredible in this Asia Cup without their main player, without their captain.

"Pakistan need to sit down and revisit their schedule. I am all for promotion of the game, I am all for going to Zimbabwe playing 5 one days and three T20s. Paying West Indies in UAE but that's not going to improve their cricket. They might improve their records but not cricket.

"It's quite embarrassing for me being an ex-Pakistani player, ex-Pakistani captain to see, like I said winning and losing is part of the game but not like that. This is just a one-sided game. It's boring, it's not good for television, it's not good for spectators and I can imagine the whole country will be disappointed," he said.

But Malik feels that it is not a time to panic but stay with the team, that is filled with newcomers and are working on their game.

"When you are in a building process, you need time. It's not a time to panic and change players. If you change a lot of players, newcomers will also need time. We have to see India's system, how they develop their players. They are the best side in the world," Malik said. "You have to give confidence to the players that the management, the captain and selection committee have picked."

"PCB chairman came to the dressing room after the match and gave us confidence. He said that you must give it the best shot. Such things happen in the game," Malik said.

He went on to add that the Pakistan youngsters should learn from the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.

"We need to learn from how Bumrah and Bhuvi are bowling. The Indian team has a lot of very experienced players. Our boys can only learn from players who have played so many matches and also from their young players. It's not like someone with 200 matches cannot learn from those who have played 5-10 matches. They can learn from anyone," Malik said.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur also said that the team is in a transition and a nine-wicket loss is a big loss but this was a good reality check for a team that is lacking confidence.

"In terms of the worst performance, nine wickets, it's got to be up there but we're on a journey, we'll get better and stronger than this," Arthur said after the game.

"They're suffering a confidence crisis at the moment, there's a little bit of fear of failure in the dressing room, there's a bit of a reality check for exactly where we are as a cricket team," Arthur said.

Pakistan batted first and lost.

Default reaction: They should have bowled first and they would have won.

Great insight. :wa

Do you think Pakistan batted first keeping CT17 final in mind?

Don't think it had anything to do with the CT final, but this is their tactic against India. Put runs on the board, make early inroads and expose the middle order. However, the plan failed on all three fronts.

There's a few overreactions. This is just how good the team is at the moment. You have to take it and accept it for what it is. The likes of Imam, Babar and Zaman are good for this team but wouldn't be good enough for most teams. The fact that Malik is your best batsman is quite telling.

That being said, Pakistan did okay in the field. They restricted Bangladesh to a below-par score. Then had a bit of luck go against them with the way Zaman and Malik got out. On another day, those don't stick or they get an extra 2 inches of elevation that takes them away from the fielders. Babar has yet to make a significant score in a game that matters as of now.

Sarfraz and Asif Ali threw their wickets away. Imam is also a massive culprit. I like Imam but he didn't need to do that at that stage. He should've taken it to the last 5 overs and told Nawaz to get his eye in.

Shadab and Nawaz are simply not good enough as batsmen. Shadab was particularly disappointing.

Are there better players that weren't in the squad? No. You can make a case for a player here or there but no one that really merits selection.

Can these players improve? Yes. Babar, Imam, Fakhar, Shadab, Shaheen, Faheem, Hasan can all improve. That's more than half your team that has yet to fulfill its potential which is a good sign.

Asif Ali can improve by making a conscious decision to not attack spinners. He is brilliant at hitting pace bowlers that bowl length but clueless against spinners.

The only two players from yesterday's team that have no room for improvement are Sarfraz and Malik and I don't think either of them will be around for too long after the world cup. So all is not lost.
