Azhar Ali at a press conference today (full quotes):

“Of course, we’re sad about not winning but some things happen that aren’t in your control. We can learn from this experience. We are disappointed. We came here to not only draw the series but win it. We had an opportunity to do that but we missed it and England performed well under pressure.

“Babar batted superbly. Conditions mostly weren’t easy for batting. The way he batted with authority, few batsmen did that in this series. It’s great for us how he is improving in Tests. He’s a world class player and we need to be patient.

“We all know Naseem Shah’s talent. He showed glimpses of it with the way he bowled against Root and Buttler. He’s inexperienced and he’ll learn. He’s been with us since 3-4 series and he has pace. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get wickets as we were expecting as a nation but this is cricket and sometimes that happens. I’m positive that the talent will perform in future insha’Allah.

“When we lost the first Test then obviously everything was put on the captain which was tough. However, we wanted to turn the series around. With my own performance and as a team also. The way we played in the 2nd Test showed that we were focused on the series.

“The first Test cost us. If we won that Test and with the weather like this, we would have won the series.

“The positives are so many from this series. Unfortunately, the results aren’t in our favor. Mistakes happen in cricket but if you learn, you’ll come back. We played good cricket and this was the message from the team management also. In the 1st and 2nd Tests, we played good cricket but the sessions that really mattered, we lost, but we dominated the first Test mostly. After that, we also fought whereas other teams collapse in such situations and start pointing fingers at eachother. But that didn’t happen.

“All-rounders create balance especially medium pacers. Faheem Ashraf is working hard to make his spot in the team. Rizwan’s performances were important and he did really well. Shadab also performed really well in the first Test but we had to bench him due to conditions, his performance didn’t warrant that. We are close to finding the right balance but we’re not there yet. Rizwan’s performances show that we can consider him at #6. Shadab as an AR has shown he’s good enough for #7. We have to find someone at #8, if conditions are good for bowling, we need a medium pacer AR.

“Regarding Asad, even I didn’t have any form but after one inning, things look a lot better. Asad got starts but unfortunately he got run out in Manchester. He has all the potential and experience, we have to back him. The media should also support players who have done well in the past. He’s just one innings away, you know his class, he’s a very good batsman who has made runs in tough situations in Eng, SA, Aus, he can perform anywhere. If he plays one big inning, things will come together for him. He did well in the last 2 series.

“There’s a lot that you can look at in hindsight and say we could’ve done differently but I think we didn’t do that much wrong. In this Test, we couldn’t control the RR early on and the game went away from us. This is Test cricket, small mistakes can cost you but there’s many positives. Rather than focusing on the mistakes, we should look at the positives and build on them. There were more positives than negatives for us in this series.

“I only play Test cricket so there are often long gaps. When other teams work on you in the meantime then you realize on things you may need to change. In practice matches, I did well and scored. If you compare, in 2016 I was very side on and I opened myself a bit. This time, I opened myself even more in the last Test. This looks easy but it’s not easy to do during a match. I tried to correct it. In the 2nd Test, I had played a good number of balls and I felt confident but the pressure remained because of the lack of runs. You don’t feel comfort and you would have seen that in this innings.

“We have played lots of cricket without crowds in UAE. Besides Friday, there’s hardly any crowd there so we’re used to it. But with the rest of the squad and management there including the T20 squad, we had some support. Of course, we missed the fan who turn up in great numbers especially in England. We didn’t get to see that green crowd but I don’t think it affected our performances.”

Quitting Pakistan captaincy never crossed my mind: Azhar Ali

Pakistan’s Azhar Ali came in for criticism over his form and leadership during their 1-0 series defeat in England but the 35-year-old said the thought of stepping down as captain never entered his mind.

Pakistan dominated much of the opening Test in Manchester but England pulled off a memorable three-wicket victory by riding a 139-run sixth-wicket partnership between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes.

The hosts’ dramatic win proved decisive as the next two matches ended in draws.

Pace great Wasim Akram was among those who felt Azhar’s passive captaincy allowed Woakes and Buttler to snatch victory in Manchester.

“There were tough times when we lost the first test, and it was blamed entirely on me,” Azhar told a virtual media conference when asked if he considered stepping down as captain following the criticism.

“It was not easy but I focused only on how we could turn the series around, with my own performance and performance from the entire team. No such thought was in my consideration.”

After managing 0, 18 and 20 in the first two Tests, Azhar scored an unbeaten 141 in the drawn third match, though it was not enough to avoid follow-on.

“The first test match cost us, of course. If we’d won that match, we’d be sitting here as series winners,” the top order batsman said.

“The disappointment will remain because … we missed our opportunity. Credit goes to England for performing well under pressure.”

The teams will clash in a three-match Twenty20 series in Manchester from Friday.

He’s speaking as if he is some returning hero who had the series of his lifetime as he led his side to an epic series win....

I think Azhar should be safe for now. He was the highest run scorer in the series.

Lols made me laugh out loud but very true, these are the sort of comments a proper journalist should respond with. Be batted supremely well but that does not cover the irresponsible captaincy throughout the series

And even batting he went missing got four innings. If he had just performed even to a decent extent in the first test we would have likely won that.

It seems like a long time ago now I keep recalling the 117/5 position but arguably the poor batting in the 2nd innings was the biggest factor in the loss, who is your captain if he gave up the arm band ?

He is “fixed” there as Captain till 2023, I guess. I thought guy will leave the OST on this own, but since it didn’t cross in his mind, no one is going to replace him. I am afraid Azhar will retire as Captain, like Misbah.

Shan becomes captain in 2024 at age 34, then Babar becomes captain in 2028 at age 34.. perfect, Misbah couldn't have scripted it better

Pakistan has established the starting age of captain in mid 30s and if they are as good as Misbah then they will lead Pakistan till mid 40s.

So he isn't going anywhere. Seems as though he will have the same stubbornness as his mentor.

Remember when Misbah was captain he was under pressure to quit or be sacked as captain. He literally held on till his retirement. Looks protege Azhar is going to be the same.

Everybody wants to be the next Misbah and play till 40. Then return in some sort of reoccurring role in the PCB till 50-60. And then appoint someone who doesn’t deserve captaincy as captain in mid 30s and in the twilight of their careers and then the cycle repeats.

Doesn't matter if he did well or if he failed.

One thing is clear: till Misbah is the big boss, Azhar will remain his poster boy. They understand each other and Misbah seems to love working with him. Same goes for the combi Misbah-Waqar.

So things will only change if Wasim Khan decides to take some powers away from Misbah. Till then nothing is going to happen. NZ tour will be key though.

I was so worried about this, after a long streak of failure, he would make one big score and that will haunt Pakistan cricket for long time. Now we're stuck with him for many years .

Why should he quit? The tour has been declared as successful for PCT. 1-0 ain’t bad on paper and can be milked for long. Also, he made a century that he can milked for himself and Shafiq for very very long.

How is it a successful tour when Pakistan drew the past two series against England in England and against much stronger English teams than this one.

Wasim Khan was one of the main culprit to appoint Misbah and gave him dual roles along with lots of powers and make him untouchable.
Needs to sack that tall talk guy first.

Yeah!!! Thanks to rain to save us from 2 test defeats.

Not my opinion. Going by what Misbah and co. have said.

He can stay in the Test team for a bit longer but he needs to give up his captaincy asap. I think people have forgotten that he stepped down from ODI captaincy a while back because he didn't have the skills to lead an International side, he's merely a squad player. Misbah was the type of guy to handle everything himself, much like a typical Asian parent that does not let his/her kids take any form of responsibility, basically a helicopter parent. He has not successfully passed the captaincy baton to the next individual, in other words he has not built another potential captain when he was an ODI/Test captain, he'd would just retire and let the PCB handle the rest. There seems to be a thing going on where they want to prioritise good behaviour within the team culture due to what happened back in 2010 but that's history. I would highly suggest the PCB in convincing Azhar to step down and focus on trying to get the winning culture back. I'm a bit fed up of reading headlines such as "Misbah is puzzled as to why the team has collapsed yet again", after every loss. Feels as if people in the set up want to milk our cricket and just earn their pay check.

In the West people resign when they understand they are no longer good enough and our baggage or the selectors make that call. Unfortunately in Pakistan the players are shameless, beghairat and the selectors adopt the attitude "Jaisay chal raha hai, waisay chalney do". In any other country the likes of Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali would not have played these many games

Shouldnt be his choice- Babar needs to be promoted to test captaincy and needs to be only a T20 player .

Please retire with some grace, a hundred in his final test.

retirement is not a word in PK players lexicon. Anyway its shouldnt be in their hands, its the selectors job, if they cant make these decisions, what is the point of Director of Cricket.

Did a Younis Khan.

He danced round the pitch last tour... then a call from Azharuddin then he scored loads in last match.

Azhar Plonked his leg down the line of the ball..... then when he was on his way out ...
All of sudden he know how to use his bat.

Really should retire.... had the talent... wasted it like many before him.

What is wrong with these people.. dont they want to be remembered as winners.

Damn poor Pak cricket team still suffering from the trauma of 2010 :'(

As if PCB officials are any better!!!! They all are doing same thing. Unfortunately Imran Khan has failed to prove that a good captain in the field not necessarily can be a good cricketing mind to improve cricket.

Defeatist comments once again from the Pakistan camp. They're satisfied with losing results because 'the effort is there' and 'there are many positives'

Azhar parallels the situation. He had one great innings, and 4 terrible innings. Doesn't matter what he ends up averaging for the series, this was a bad series for him as a batsmen and as a captain.

He’s speaking as if he is some returning hero who had the series of his lifetime as he led his side to an epic series win....

He is a beghairat just like his idol Misbah. For them as long as they score some runs to save their position in the team, the winning part can go to hell. If you remember, he was forced to resign from ODI captaincy by Najam and Co. because this shameless individual wasnt leaving that by his own accord either. Luckiest guy to captain us twice, and failing twice in both stints.
