Qureshi, Khattak, Qaiser, Azhar included in PTI’s 7-member committee for poll talks with govt

The PTI has formed a negotiation committee for talks with the government after the approval of party chairman Imran Khan.

The party said the seven-member team will decide the plan of action with the government regarding the elections.

The committee comprises party vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pervez Khattak, Asad Qaiser, Hammad Azhar, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Murad Saeed and Aon Abbas Buppi.

Earlier, while speaking to journalists at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, Imran Khan said that if he is disqualified or arrested, Shah Mahmood Qureshi will lead the party, and in the future, Murad Saeed will emerge as a ‘prominent leader’, Express News reported.

"The time will soon change, and in the coming days, I will give a big surprise. There is no fight between me and the military," he added.

Khan said that he has consulted with his legal team for the release of arrested workers, and soon the party will approach the courts in this connection. He said that apart from elections, there is no solution to the country's prevailing issues, adding that the current government has ruined the national economy.

"I know that there is a plan to arrest me, disqualify me, or even kill me. If I am arrested or disqualified, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Pervez Khattak will handle the [party] affairs," he said.

Imran Khan said that those who are leaving the party, some are forced and real faces of some have been exposed. "The youth are the biggest asset for the party, and they have the right to future tickets. PTI will emerge victorious in the elections."

He stated that President Arif Alvi will work according to the Constitution. "Let's have a referendum today and see the result. I can take an oath on this matter that I have never advocated violence and destruction. If I didn't resort to violence even when bullets were fired at me, how was it possible now?"

Khan further said that everything has been planned against PTI. "When we are winning in public, why should we resort to violence?," he concluded.

Am afraid PDM will not play ball. There is no need to.

They will play it out to make sure IK gets convicted then announce elections.

The only person who can can change things is CJ.

PDM will never negotiate now! PTI and Khan are naive to think now the PDM will give two hoots about PTI.

Mr. CJ history only remembers the winner, your time to show yhe mettle not for IK not for PTI but for this country

Oh finally ready to come to the negotiation table now are we? Now that the wind has been knocked out of the sails of the “revolution”.

Alas! It's very late now sane heads like Khattak etc should not have sidelined earlier too much damage done now

Anything short of banning PTI would a disaster for PDM in next elections.

And the Lord of London has spoken

No talks with ‘terrorists who set country on fire’: Nawaz Sharif

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif has said no talks will be held with “the group of terrorists and saboteurs who burn the memorials of martyrs and set the country on fire.”

He was apparently referring to May 9 rioters who he deemed terrorists.

Nawaz added discussions are only held with politicians.

Nope, no need to negotiate with them..

PDM threw them a bone earlier and PTI had its nakhra, now no need to do talks with them. LOl they came begging back, but now the status qou have changed.

Interesting. Now you are backing the Sharif clan, previously you were backing the Bhutto dynasty. It's almost as if you are playing Devil's advocate like another poster who goes by the name of maternal uncle.

Bad news for Hindustan if you get your way.

Seems like you are the one that is confused here.

Imran finally on the back foot against the PDM and the establishment.

I thought you were smart enough to understand the context in which the cricket terms I used.
I get it. But I don’t think we need to use them in this context .a bit over use of cricket terms in Pakistani politics. But yes I understand your point.

The ruling parties have rejected beleaguered former prime minister Imran Khan’s offer for talks, stating that talks were held with politicians not terrorists and that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief is now himself seeking an NRO.

The development came as the PTI chief constituted a seven-member negotiating team to hold talks with the government—for developing consensus on a date for general elections— amid a massive crackdown.

This crackdown — which has thrown the PTI into a deep existential crisis with dozens of key party leaders jumping ship every day — was launched after the party leaders and workers allegedly vandalized and set fire to state and army properties in the wake of Imran's arrest on May 9.

Responding to the offer, the supreme leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif took to Twitter to state that talks are held only with politicians. “There will be no talks with a group of terrorists and saboteurs who burn memorials of martyrs and set the country on fire,” he said.

In a statement, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said: “Those who attack the state are punished; they are not negotiated with.” She claimed that Imran’s appeal for talks is actually an appeal for an NRO.

When in power, Imran Khan often said former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf ended criminal cases against the leaders of various parties including the PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) through the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) but that he would not give “looters” any NRO.

Marriyum said holding talks with those who desecrated the memorials of martyrs is a desecration of martyrs. She said Imran wants talks after burning ambulances, hospitals, schools and poisoning youths’ minds, adding there will be no talks with him.

She said parties that are not political disintegrate in the same way the PTI has. “Imran has called for talks when his party leaders have abandoned him in flocks.”

She reminded Imran that he had not talked with the opposition on economy, Kashmir, national security issues, Covid-19 and the FATF issue but he is now urging for talks.

Declaring him a “foreign agent” and “Toshakhana thief”, the information minister said negotiations are not held with the ones who allegedly looted Rs60 billion as such a person is brought to the court of law and not to the negotiations table.

Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Shazia Marri, who belongs to the PPP, said Imran was responsible for the situation arising after May 9. She said talking about talks now was nothing but eyewash.

The minister said mobs attacked Jinnah House in Lahore and the GHQ in Rawalpindi on the order of Imran. “He keeps his children in the safety of London but incites the children of the nation to commit anti-state acts,” she said.

Marri recalled that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who currently serves as the country’s foreign minister, tried to bring political parties to the negotiating table and constituted a team consisting of senior leaders for negotiations with political parties. “Imran, however, sabotaged Bilawal’s efforts.”

She said Imran’s arrogance led to his downfall, regretting that the PTI chief did not allow the PTI to become a political party.
“Talking about negotiations after everything has been done is pretentious,” she said.

Jamiat Uleme-e-Islam (JUI-F) spokesperson Hafiz Hamdullah also called Imran the mastermind behind May 9 attacks. He said targeting military installations was tantamount to waging a war against the state. A rebel, he said, is not negotiated with but deserves severe punishment.

Hamdullah while predicting that jail will be Imran’s destination said it was time for the PTI chief to answer for his actions. “Imran’s appeal for talks is nothing but a joke”.

Negotiations after Imran apologises to nation: Sharjeel Inam on PTI chief’s offer for talks

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that negotiations with the PTI were only possible once former prime minister Imran Khan “personally apologises” to the nation, families of the martyrs, and everyone who suffered during the May 9 events.

“You tried to become an underworld don, a mafia in the country and harmed the people and institutions. And now you are saying you are ready for negotiations.

“This means whatever happened holds no value for you,” Memon said. “Will Imran Khan answer the nation today? Imran Khan doesn’t care about his party workers.”

Negotiations will be for Imran's release. Otherwise nothing happening. Imran refused to talk to them. Now that he is flat on the ground he can talk to chor daaku again. He has no leverage here.

Zardari is corrupt but one of the smartest politicians in history of this country. Would be interesting how he plays this.

No way for talks after military installations attacked: Saad Rafique

PML-N Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has made it clear that there is no way possible for talks with the PTI, especially after the vandalisation of military installations.

“Imran has formed a committee,” Rafique said. “Who will talk to them? No one. This is no situation to hold talks.”

The railway’s minister claimed that former prime minister Imran Khan had told his team to end the talks with the government, which were held on the orders of the Supreme Court last months.

He told the reporters to also question the politicians that were representing the PTI in talks about the matter.

“There is an agenda for talks and there is a situation created for talks to take place,” he said. “Their team was doing a reasonable talk and matters were decided but to no avail”.

To this day I fail to understand Imran's politics. His people badmouth army but he says that he does not have any conflict with the army. He called PDM leaders thugs and did not want to engage in any settlement with them but now he wants to negotiate.

Imran is a tried and tested failure in politics who is clearly not fit to run a political party let alone a country. There's nothing in it for PDM to talk to PTI when the party is on the verge of extinction. PTI will lose its remaining supporters if they settle with PDM leaders. What happened to the principles? What does the party even stand for?

Haven't see a more cowardly leader than Imran who is so afraid of going to jail.

Good post. Khan is a master of flip-flopping and poor decision-making.

Very well put. But he has developed such a cult following that cannot see the reality on the ground and living in an alternate reality.

At this stage the establishment does not need to negotiate with IK in light of the crackdown. He has no leverage at the moment.

They can isolate him into irrelevance save for his overseas social media followers who have shown that they are not quite willing to give up their western passports and privileges and actually sacrifice for his party. The PDM will be happy for them to just live comfy lives in Wngland, US, Canada etc whilst protesting outside Avenfield.

Is this the same Sher e Punjab's daughter who was filmed bringing thugs to beat up a shop keeper for closing before she could buy her stuff? Hard to tell from that spelling.

LAHORE: The ambiguities of government policy over talks with the PTI came into sharp focus on Sunday, with a key minister flatly ruling out the possibility of negotiations in a post-May 9 scenario while another hinting at a way out if Imran Khan apologises and repents.

Talking at the Geo News programme Jirga, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said negotiations with Mr Khan could be held if he took “corrective measures”, apologises to the nation, admits his mistake and promises not to do anything like May 9 in the future.

The minister said that before that fateful day — when violent protests erupted across the country after Mr Khan’s arrest — the government negotiated with PTI with “sincere intentions” and the two sides agreed on all matters except the date of election.

He said peaceful protest was everyone’s right, but attacks on armed forces’ installations should not be condoned.

Meanwhile, in Lahore, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique said there was no way talks could be held with the PTI in the current situation.

“There used to be an environment and agenda for holding parleys on any issue. But the existing atmosphere is not suitable for talks,” he told reporters, adding that no one would like to hold dialogue with the talks committee formed by Mr Khan.

Mr Rafique was probably referring to the seven-member committee that the former prime minister appointed on Saturday.

The minister said he always supported negotiations despite several differences with the PTI. He said the government attempted to engage in dialogue and both sides even agreed on several issues, including simultaneous elections.

However, when the government’s team contacted Mr Khan, the PTI chief refused to accept any of the points, Mr Rafique said, adding: “Now, after all that bullying, there is no space for dialogue.”

The minister, who was talking to the media after visiting the Lahore corps commander’s residence, also known as Jinnah House, said that a tragedy took place at the venue on May 9.

He regretted that valuable things “preserved” at the site, including the Quaid-i-Azam’s room, his writing table, and handwritten notes, were damaged and burnt on that fateful day.

He alleged that the PTI leadership and ticket-holders were involved in the arson despite knowing about the sanctity of the installation. “This fire did not erupt because of petrol or matchbox, but chemicals,” he claimed.

The railways minister also claimed that Mr Khan “poisoned the minds of the youth and sowed the seeds of hatred in their minds for years”.

He recalled that during the Pervez Musharraf government, PML-N workers had also been protesting almost daily, but kept in mind the “sanctity of cantonments”.

Asked who was responsible for preventing the May 9 riots, he said this question should be put to the Punjab caretaker government.

Mr Rafique also urged the former prime minister and the entire PTI leadership to accept their mistake and apologise to the whole nation over the May 9 riots. “They should do issue a public apology,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon pointed out that half of the individuals appointed by Imran Khan to the negotiation committee were currently in hiding.

He said PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari had made it clear that before any negotiations, Mr Khan should apologise for the “injustices and wrongdoings” committed during his tenure.

Well put. Any leverage he had, he ended up giving it away.

He was always 5 steps behind

Imran is a poor politician. He is Unbelievably naive, I would even say dumb. He gave away all his trump cards, resigned from federal government, disolved provincial government, bad mouthed everyone and now doesn't have the ability or power to back up all his big talk. If he is going for revolution clearly he is the most coward leader. All inspiring leaders lead from the front and are not scared of few days of incarceration. Even his poor foot soldiers are braver and better leaders than him. They are ready to fight against establishment and are now going to pay with their lives. But the leader is already a spent force and looking to negotiate with the same people whom he called chors a d looters. A very poor leader

Extremely well put. He is a very coward leader scared of going to jail for a day. His supporters dress him up to be some kind of revolutionary fighting for principled stand. I neither see any principles nor any courage to stand for them. Pakistan is better off with some political stability provided by other leaders even if thye are corrupt

Long and short of it. His ego got better of him. Honestly he should have just trusted his handlers and tried to stay in power for 5 years. But the kind of fan following he had cultivated, his only to go to channel was to act like clean tough guy badmouthing his opponents. Delusional to the core.

I don't think army will ever give this level of freedom to any person or party going forward. They know they created something that they couldn't totally control.

Former Punjab governor and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Sardar Latif Khosa on Monday dubbed the current political situation as reflective of a 'fascist dictatorship'.

"The Pakistan Democratic Movement [PDM] is very clear on its fate if elections take place," he said, adding that polls are being delayed as the people are not in favour of the PDM.

Speaking to the media at the Lahore High Court (LHC), he said that such a regime can only rule through force. "I have never seen such a dark era throughout my life," he stated, questioning "what sort of message are we sending to the world."

Read Will Imran pull it off like Nawaz did?

Khosa condemned the arrests of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and said not engaging in dialogue with former prime minister Imran Khan "is tantamount to pushing the country towards destruction".

When asked whether the PPP would accept those distancing themselves from the PTI, Khosa said “No, absolutely not. Changing party loyalties has ruined our political culture”.

He also said that he is not in support of military court trials as they hold neither moral nor constitutional grounds.

When asked about missing journalists, Khosa mentioned the killing of Arshad Sharif and lamented "what would be the country’s future when its journalists were not safe".

The ex-governor's remarks come a day after Imran's invitation for dialogue was met with a lack of response, as two prominent ministers in Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's cabinet have said that the chairman of the PTI crossed the redline on May 9.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that there could be no negotiations with Imran because he went too far in conspiring against the military at the behest of foreign forces.

Violence erupted across the country on May 9, following the arrest of Imran in a graft case. The rioters attacked several government buildings, including sensitive military installations.

The government has since pursued an aggressive crackdown against the party leadership and others alleged of being involved in the vandalism and causing public unrest.

The ruling coalition also said that protestors will be tried under the Army Act at military courts.

And prove to be a man of no principles and be like the Sharifs.

And prove to be a man of no principles and be like the Sharifs.

Well I am sure it's same principles that made him take their support to come to power. Or it's same principles that made him pick up crooks like Elahi, Chaudhary or Qureshi in his party. The same principles that made him sell honorary gifts and keep the proceeds under toshakhana or pass cabinet resolution to transfer the I'll gotten money to SC.

This can keep going. Politics is not a place for idealism.

Just out of interest, what do you think of your own leader in India? You have certainly been liberal with the insults of Imran so would be interesting to see what you are comparing with.

Imran Khan Niazi is carbon copy of his famous uncle General AAK Niazi

In Dec 1971 Gen AAK Niazi made big bold statements that he wud prefer death but never surrender. Only to surrender tamely on 16th Dc 1971

Same with Imran. He kept saying how he wud never talk to Sharifs and Bhutto under any circumstance but now he wants to negotiate with them. Bcoz right now he is like the dog with it's tail beneath elephant's leg ( elephant here is Asim Munir )

Lesson for Pakistan : Never go to war with a Niazi as ur commander :P

I have been critical of his political skills. Modi, Amit shah, Narasimha Rao, deve gowda, Etc are great st politics. Rahul not so much as he comes across as naive. Kegri is better than Rahul in politics. See how Modi took the loss in karnataka.. They didn't throw a fit. So did congress when they lost. They are serious politicians who knows no one is untouchable in politics. Imran seems to think he is some kind of a messiah and he woild clean the swamp. In big mess countries like India and Pakistan what you need is a slow steady improvements and not some revolution. Imran also seems to think only he is right and everyone else are chors, looters and boot lickers. Whereas he personally slightly better corruption wise but whole lot worse in governance. He was a net loss for pakistan.

Modi isn't a good politician, he is a mass murderer. Pumping out hindutva doesn't make someone a good politician, it just appeals to the hardline Hindu zealots.

Your judgement on Imran can't be taken seriously if you back hate mongers like Modi and Amit Shah.

IK's story is crashing down badly as a horrible train wreck. It appears even Arif Alvi has abandoned him and is now happily signing PDM Bills without any challenge.

Yeah, the person who won 2 elections with a heavy majority is not a good politician. The person who built far better foreign relations with other nations than any Pakistani leader in the history is a just a hate monger. It's one thing to hate Modi for valid reasons but not acknowledging his political acumen is illogical.

Think the term "mass murderer" may have caught your eye.

Let's stay on topic with PTI here.

There is a good chance IK will be charged under terrorism laws. I don't see why anyone would want to associate themselves with him. The government is already calling PTI terrorist organization, and they called him RAW agent. I think President knows which side of his bread is buttered and when to give up on a dead horse.

Once his only argument against Modi's political acumen is personal attack there is no point in responding. It's just his way of coping and moreover its completely out of topic as far as this thread is concerned

absolutely, no one should be negotiating with any groups which are keen to spread anarchy and riot against their own institutions in the name of revolution. PTI and IK have no leverage to force any kind of meaningful dialog. They gave up all their leverage and now forced to corner.

Qureshi’s son denies ‘impression’ given on father’s meeting with PTI defectors

PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s son Zain Qureshi has “denied” media impression given on his father’s meeting with party defectors at the Adiala Jail.

“Makhdoom sahib is the vice chairman of the party and is the name of an ideology. We stand with the ideology of Tehreek-e-Insaf and Imran Khan,” he tweeted.

Zain added that his father has only done politics of “principles and service” not “position and greed”. “He was with Imran Khan yesterday and today.”

‘Serious’ negotiations can only be held with PM Shehbaz: Sanaullah

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that “serious negotiation” can only be held with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

With eyes set on the powers that be, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) waltz away from the incumbent government on Friday, saying it was only interested in talks with the ‘powerful stakeholders’, ironically, for restoring the Constitution and democracy in the country.

While showcasing its desire for an embrace with the establishment’s firm grip, former minister for economic affairs and PTI Secretary General Central Punjab, Hammad Azhar, left nothing to imagination where the former ruling party sees the center of real power.

The former minister, who was recently made a part of PTI’s negotiation team, equated holding negotiations with the leadership of the ruling alliance as nothing but a waste of time. “We don’t want to waste time negotiating with puppets,” Hamad said in a statement, saying the incumbent rulers are “imposed people with no vote bank”.

Alleging that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government was hiding behind crutches, Hammad said that “for the sake of restoration of the Constitution and democracy, negotiations have only been offered with the real decision-makers.”

Rana Sanaullah has stated that if IK wants to hold talks with the PDM then he should reach out to the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif directly.

PTI’s offer for negotiation only for ‘real decision-makers’, not ‘puppets’: Hammad Azhar
PTI leader Hammad Azhar has said that his party’s offer for negotiations was only extended to the “real decision-makers” and not “puppets”.

In a tweet, he said: “We don’t want to waste time negotiating with puppets. These are imposed people who have no vote bank and are hiding behind crutches.”

“For the sake of restoration of the constitution and democracy, negotiations have been offered only with the real decision-makers,” Azhar added.

Fun times

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday directed the Punjab caretaker government to disclose details of all cases registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairperson Shah Mehmood Qureshi by June 6.

The former foreign minister has been in police custody in the aftermath of the May 9 attacks on sensitive state installations.

On May 23, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the release of Qureshi after he submitted an undertaking to the court. However, hours later he was re-arrested by the Punjab Police from outside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Subsequently, his daughter, Meher Bano Qureshi had approached the LHC seeking details of all undisclosed or new first information reports (FIR) registered against her father.

The Punjab chief secretary and inspector general police (IGP) had been nominated among the respondents in the petition.

She had requested the court to direct the concerned quarters to give protection of law to Qureshi and not to arrest him in any new criminal case without prior permission of the court.

The petition also stated that Qureshi's family had learned that a number of undisclosed criminal cases have been registered against him and there is an apprehension that he may again unjustifiably be arrested in the mentioned undisclosed new criminal cases.

Permitting the petition during the proceedings today, LHC's Justice Ali Baqar Najafi directed the caretaker government to submit details of all registered cases, disclosed or otherwise, before the court by June 6.

Despite relief from the courts, however, there appears to be no respite in the crackdown on PTI leaders.

In a fresh statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif continued to lash out at the PTI over the May 9 incident, terming it a "brazen attack on the state of Pakistan" with "sinister objectives".

Shehbaz took to Twitter to clarify nonetheless that “the culprits [of May 9] are being dealt with under the law” and assured that he will ensure “no rights violations take place”.

The prime minister accused the PTI chief and his party of attempting to destroy the country’s “integrity” and resorting to acts that “no country in the world would tolerate”.

Shehbaz vowed that “Pakistan fully respects and is committed to all its constitutional and international obligations on human rights [sic]”.

He also dismissed claims of human rights abuses and restrictions on the right to political protest with regard to May 9 and the events that have followed. Such rhetoric, according to the prime minister, is “aimed at manipulating and swaying opinion-makers outside the country”. Shehbaz insisted that every case associated with May 9 “will be dealt with due process under the law”.
