Nice share brother. From all the places in India Chennai is the one I would have least expected this from but that's perhaps due to my own ignorance.

Really cool, thanks for sharing. Have always appreciated South India’s link to Islam and Muslims, dating back to the time of the king Cheraman Perumal who is said to have witnessed the miracle of the splitting of the moon by Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

The Cheraman Juma Masjid is also the oldest mosque in India dating back to the year 629.

So it’s little surprise that cool little traditions like this still exist, but heartwarming to see nonetheless 👍

Thank you for posting this, @JaDed .

Like @DeadlyVenom , Chennai would not have been my top guess if someone asked me where an Urdu newspaper written by hand is produced. Chennai as capital of Tamil Nadu, is a state defined by its fierce defence of the Tamil language. And when it comes to Islam on the subcontinent, most of the focus tends to be on the north and to some extent Hyderabad.

This enterprise is clearly not motivated by the prospect of riches. Instead, it is sustained by a deep love of Nastaliq calligraphy and Urdu and by a deep attachment to the scribal culture and the katib tradition. It must also be sustained by the deep sense of community felt by readers who value the human touch of a publication that has withstood the rush of time.

Yes they are Muslims of Chennai that speak Urdu fluently(Sunnis and Shias), tbf they are a much richer community overall even though total population of Chennai Muslims is only around 10%.
My family doctor back in the day was an Urdu Speaking Muslim woman who were settled for generations in Chennai , and her husband was the doctor of Arab Dictators/Kings.

They do maintain a quieter way of life except this newspaper which is also only famous among locals only but are a big time donor of both the Dravidian Parties.

And Tamizhans only hate Hindi(imposition), they don’t hate any other Indian language.
