Ponting: 9.5
Sanga: 9.25
Dravid: 9.25
Kallis: 9
Amla: 8
Kane: 8.5

Point to be made is what you're looking for from your number 3, which will change decision making. I would take Dravid at number 3 especially since I like having one attacking opener always playing. Ponting, Sanga, Dravid are all legends so personal preference comes into play there. I rate Kallis more in the number 4 slot.

1) Ricky Ponting: 9
2) Hashim Amla: 9
3) Kumar Sangakkara: 9
4) Rahul Dravid: 9
5) Jacques Kallis: 7
6) Kane Williamson: 7

Kallis is an elite #4 batsman but his body of work at #3 is not as impressive. Williamson has half a career in front of him and will get rated higher in a few years. The other four are legendary #3s with not much to separate them.

Kane played more matches at #3 than Kallis did. Why is one rated 9 and the other is "unrated"?

Oh, I didn't pay attention to number 3. I just rated them as batsmen.

I just filtered Kallis record as #3. I will rate Kallis much lower as #3 and keep Kane as unrated because Kane has a long career ahead of him.

Yeah, that's similar to what I did but even if Kane hangs his boots up tomorrow, he'll go down as a pretty good batsman.

Kallis the batsman is definitely a 9. However, he wasn't the best #3.

Kallis played in SA a tough place for opening batsmen Smith averages 41 there Kallis at no 3 would most likely been exposed to the new ball regularly compared to Sangakarra who played on some flat wickets in Sri Lanka his highest score was on a flat pitch against a friendly bowling attack in Bangladesh.

Ricky Ponting : 9
Kumar Sangakkara : 8
Rahul Dravid: 8.5
Jacques Kallis : 8

Kane Williamson : 7.5

Ponting & Sanga 9

Quite the opposite actually. Sanga was pretty much an opener whereas Kallis enjoyed a healthy buffer for the most part.

In to bat before 50 runs on the board (so somewhere before the 15-20 over mark)

Sanga 77% of the time
Dravid 70% of the time
Ponting 64% of the time
Lara 60% of the time
Kallis 48% of the time
Sachin 38% of the time

Btw not sure why Kallis is on there his record at number 3 minus the minnows is not pretty.

Kallis - 2.7k runs @ 42 with just 6 tons in 73 innings
Away it’s even worse 1.1k runs @ 36 with just 3 tons in 33 innings

As far as number threes go the Don is of course the undisputed number one then I would go with Viv, Lara, Ponting, Sanga. Those would be my top five.

You make good points and this is why I would pick Kallis over Sangakkara as a batsman. However, Kallis played less than half the games Sanga did at #3 and his impact in the games he did play left a lot to be desired. Now Kallis batting at #4 was a different story.

Ricky Ponting - 9
Kumar Sangakkara - 8
Rahul Dravid - 9
Jacques Kallis - 8.9
Hashim Amla - 6.75
Kane Williamson - 7.75

Amla is not in the same league, not sure why is he in the list. Rating Williamson on his potential.

Your wait is over. Bhaijaan is here to put an end to the debate :-

1. Jammy
2. Punter
3. Blondie
4. Sango
5. Hash
6. Kanu

Ponting - 9.5
Sangakkara- 9.25
Kallis- 9.25
Dravid- 9
Amla- 8
Williamson- dunno(probably a 8.5 if he continues performing the same over his career)

These ratings are just as a batsmen.

Dunno how to rate them at no.3. For example, Amla averages 52 in top 3 while Kallis 49 but the latter obviously played far more tougher bowlers in that 49 test sample and also improved his game afterwards.

The point was the difference between batting in South Africa and Sri Lanka Sangakarra has only played 8 tests in South Africa for an average of 35 Kallis has an overall average of 56 in South Africa which is 10 points and more ahead of Amla De Villiers Smith in a period when South Africa had the lowest overall mean batting average compared to the other countries.
I highly doubt Sangakarra could average anywhere near 56 long term in South Africa but Kallis could be close to him in Sri Lanka.

Looking at it Kallis also averages 35 in Sri Lanka after only 5 tests but averages 58 in India and 83 in Pakistan long term he could do well in Sri Lanka.

For one thing SA have had the best Test attack for the most part post 2000s so to make direct comparisons that way makes little sense. In terms of conditions tho yes SA has generally been the toughest place to bat but SL hasn’t been all that easy either. I think most people wrongly base their impressions of SL wickets on what goes on at the SSC. Apart from there rest are generally decent tracks which is why non-SC bowlers/teams for instance have done well in SL for the most part - not just spin but usually offers a fair bit for the quicks as well (swing with the new ball, seam and grip for cutters in the middle overs and reverse with the older ball).

Also should add that Kallis’ home record against decent attacks is not all that good actually. Overall not too flash either compared to other top Test batsmen during his time - 3.5k runs @ 42 with just 9 tons in 93 innings.

Sangakarra is a bit underrated then it also shows at home Ponting Dravid had it better than most India and Australia were easier than most places to bat Kallis or Sangakarra could've dominated even more had conditions been similar in SA and Sri Lanka.

Kallis compared to other South African batsman is well ahead at home Jayawardene is very similar to Sangakarra at home.
