Ravichandran Ashwin becomes joint-fastest to 350 Test wickets [Update#121]

You just showed your age there buddy :) !! Anyways many congratulations to you lot on finding a gun off spinner. I must say he is doing pretty well :14:

I am old enough to have memories of watching Imran lift the WC ;)

I just find some of the criticism of Ashwin really bizarre.

In all my time of watching cricket, I cannot think of a single player who has been a bigger match winner in tests in subcontinental + WI conditions than him.

Ashwin has been the MoS in 7 of the 15 test series that he has played in so far in his career.

Next best ratios amongst (players with 10 series minimum) are Imran and Marshall with 1 MoS in every 3.5.

I am not gonna dispute the stats as they certainly show his credentials but please calm down for what it's all worth brother. Seeing how you've told me the latter in bold part I am now even more concerned that before :P

Many fans won't give any credit because they assume that it was rank turners without watching games.

The 4th test was a turner and this was the only test in the series with a orangish pitch resembling those against South Africa last year.

So Kohli got a double ton on a turner,Jayant scored too on a raging turner right?

The 4th test was a turner and this was the only test in the series with a orangish pitch resembling those against South Africa last year.

It was turner, but not a rank turner where it started turning sharply from day one as we saw some pitches in SA series. Also, it was a true pitch with even bounce with sharp turn as test progressed. Uneven or low bounce makes it worse if it's turning sharply. SA series had two pitches where no one looked comfortable from either side.

So Kohli got a double ton on a turner,Jayant scored too on a raging turner right?

It was turning for Ali and Rashid as well. Kohli and Jayant batted well, Eng bowled poorly to not apply consistent pressure. You can't say that ball was not turning in this pitch. First time I saw some decent turn in this series, but due to true bounce it was not hard to score runs if you have a decent defense to bat for some time.

Lol they are cornered now aren't they. India didn't win the toss, Ashwin took 12 wickets, Kohli scored double century.

Running out of excuses to downplay India/Kohli/Ashwin's performance. :))

Why so defensive? A poster simply said that Ashwin destroyed Eng even on flatter tracks earlier looking at how this series has gone. First 3 tests didn't have much turn and Ashwin bowled well. Kohli simply batted very well in 4th test and credit should be given. Poster didn't downplay India or Kohli.

My retort wasn't just implied for that particular poster. It was because there are a few posters who do downplay Kohli or Ashwin's performance. So I am not being defensive, I am just enjoying how quickly they are running out of excuses.

I think even you felt the same some posts ago didn't you?

Ashwin is too good bowler to keep down , phenomenal.

Yup. He is one guy you should not use this standard home and away talking point to put down.First thing he has played very few tests that too under ultra defensive Dhoni mostly. I guess atleast 70 of his wicket taking deliveries are magical. When Mendis came in Bedi predicted he would take 500 wickets with proper bowling action.Turns out Ashwin is the guy who would do that with more variations.

Has been bowling like a dream, took time to get into his grove in this series and how well has he comeback after a slowish start in first test.

Having said that, with all these home successes, pressure on Ashwin to improve his performances in Eng, Aus, NZ and SA will be immense on our next tours. Without a rich haul in those countries, he may end up being as another Kumble, world class and an Indian great but not really a ATG in league of Warne or Murali.

Warnie is once in a life time bowler. Murali for all his mega mega records sucked in India and Australia
. English batsmen have profound weakness against major turning balls. Quiet unfathomable how Murali was allowed to take that many wickets in England . Ashwin is not a spinner like Murali. He relies on subtle variations . SG balls help him a lot .

Who said Kohli can't score in turning conditions :))

His ineptness is shown in swinging conditions

:ghalib

well kohli is a beast and English spinners aren't the best are they?

i actually gave Ashwin credit in my previous post and said that the only time he had it a BIT easy was this test.

I did give Ashwin and Kohli massivd credit lol you guys just didn't look at my previous posts

Whatever it is Murali won two tests for Sri Lanka on his own vs England in England. That alone neutralizes his Aus failures. As for his poor record in India, again in Pakistan he was awesome playing vs some very good batsmen of spin bowling.

Also while we are on Ashwin vs Murali (lol worthy comparison), we are haoling Ashwin for doing something which Murali did for a decade and more!!

It is not a question about credit to Ashwin. It is a question of calling a spade a spade. Many Indians in this forum actually appreciated Yasir's performance recently. This test was if anything, a raging turner. If it was a raging turner, trust me, Eng would have been packed off under 2 and half days.

A fifth day pitch in the sub continent is bound to spin and that is what it did over here. It was hard work for the spinners in the first innings as both Ash and Jaddu went for over 100 runs apeice for their wickets.

The orangish color that you are talking about is the red soil from Mumbai and not any special chemical to make the pitch a turner.

And finally, if you actually caught some highlights of the last day, they showed 5 variations of Ashwin's bowling armory which itself is a proof of how far he has come as a bowler and how hard he has worked on his bowling.

Why do you think his record in Pakistan will cancel out his record in India. Ashwin's record in OZ is poor. But it still better than Murali's record in Australia. You can make any bowler look bad with selective filters :)

i did catch highlights of the last day and saw that beauty he bowled to Bairstow.

What I don't understand is what did I say that offended you guys so much lol? I said Ashwin is the best bowler in SC conditions at least (better than Yasir) and I also didn't classify this pitch as a 'raging turner'. All I said was compared to the previous 6 tests, this pitch was a bit more helpful but that doesn't matter since Ashwin destroyed batting lineups in the previous 6 tests aswell on pitches that weren't as helpful.

Peace bro. I did not get offended. If that is what you meant, then my bad, I misinterpreted your comment and agree to what you said. I am not forcing anyone to acknowledge Ashwin is great. I myself have been a vocal critic of him on this forum. It is just that the way he has come back from the Sydney test in 2014, is simply phenomenal. Yes, he has to prove himself abroad, I think his time will come.

Wankhede has more bounce compared to any of the other pitches. His 5th variation came into play according to Ashwin himself. He has surprised Indians as well. Nobody expected him to be this good.

when is india's next overseas test series?

Comfortably the best spinner in the world. He is no Warne or Muralitharan, but he is well on his way to ATG status.

He is taking wickets at an incredible rate. Definitely on his way to 500+ scalps.

Only a jealous Yasir fan can not see the improvement in Ashwin. No spinner in the world is bowling anywhere near the level Ashwin is at the moment.

Lol. He'll have zero impact overseas like usual and his hype will die down. Only to return with a vengeance once he gets back to his backyard.

The best Ashwin can hope to become is the Indian, spin version of Anderson. A very good bowler, who was great in supportive conditions but average outside of them, with a few quality performances sprinkled here and there.

Right now, Ashwin has ZERO contributions to India's cause outside Asia and the West Indies. He'll be 30 by the time India's next round of overseas tours come around. Good luck.

Needs 50 wickets (or less depending on the last inning the deshis play here) in 10 tests to become the fastest to 300 wickets beating Lillee

Fastest to 300 now.

He is now at 316, needs to get 34 wickets in 8 matches to equal Murali. Should be gettable.

But he has 9 tests in England and Australia, he will slow down for sure. It will be interesting to see if the tries leg spin there.

Not sure if Ashwin will be played in all these matches.

Just 7 years to reach 316.Amazing. It also reflects how much test cricket India plays per year. Many bowling greats like Wasim,Waqar,Dale Stein couldn't have exceptional bowling record because their respective countries played fewer test maches per year.

On Home conditions he is in top 15.
Top bowlers with min 150 wickets on home conditions.

India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday equalled the record of spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan by becoming the joint-fastest to 350 Test wickets in history. Both Ashwin and Muralitharan reached the milestone in their respective 66th Test.

Ashwin, playing in his first international match of 2019, needed eight wickets to reach 350 wickets in the ongoing series opening first Test against South Africa in Vizag. He took 7/145 in the first innings and then on the fifth and final day, removed Theunis de Bryun in his first over of the morning, for his 350th Test scalp.

Ashwin thus overtook Anil Kumble‘s India record who needed 77 Tests.

Muralitharan holds the record for the most wickets in Test cricket’s history with 800 scalps to his name.

Ashwin, who made his debut in Test cricket in 2011, was not picked in India’s playing XI in the two-match Test series against West Indies with Ravindra Jadeja taking the lone-spinner’s slot.

The 33-year-old Ashwin, however, marked his return with an emphatic manner in securing India a crucial 71-run lead against South Africa with his 27th five-wicket haul in Tests.

Top-five quickest to 350 Test wickets

“To stay away from (international) cricket itself was very tough for me. In order to substitute, I played whatever games I got. I tried and made opportunity for myself to go and play some County cricket. I tried and played the TNPL as much as I could, played some league cricket in Chennai,” Ashwin had said after third day’s play. “It was very important to tick those numbers off because that is essentially where I came from. Going back and playing there is probably the best thing that could have happened.”
