His franchise in the IPL sit top of the table at the moment. A lot of it has to do with his captaincy imo as well as the batting of Gayle and KL.

What do you make of his captaincy so far ? MMHS sensible-indian-fan Cricketjoshilla

Don't give much into IPL captaincy, T20 clubs are successful mostly because of management, coaching staff.

His captaincy has been a breath of fresh air, but it's not surprise to seasoned watchers. Ashwin has always been the smartest cookie tactically in that Indian team. True student of the game.

Anybody is a better captain than kohli. He's the most clueless captain in the history of cricket.

But he can't captain the Indian team now, because his place is itself not guaranteed. Instead of trying variations in bowling like leg spin, he should have seen what could be done to his batting which was supposed to be his first suit when he started as a cricketer! (Same goes with Jadeja) In addition he is a late mover in field & running between wicket (at least to rotate strike in LOIs playing late in the order) If he improved his batting like anything, he would have done good to himself and also the team (Opener spot is up for grabs in Test matches, where we have tried even Partiv Patel... He should have eyed it!)

And yet it is under his captaincy the team is number 1 in ODIs and Tests! He has his moments of madness, but is a fine captain otherwise. Bumrah for SA tests and totally backing Kuldeep and Chahal as our short format bowlers showed us a glimpse.

Despite being a hardcore IPL fan, I would not look much at his captaincy in IPL.

it is nothing to do with his captaincy.. he can captain in IPL as long as he wants..

Kapil dev was the last bowling captain who is also an allrounder.. Ever since that it is only the batsman who lead the side....

His field placing, rotation of bowlers, choice of bowlers are in stark contrast with captaincy from the previous editions. His team is not even that good a team. He uses that Afghan bowler brilliantly. Bunch of domestic players like Sran has stepped up. Yuvraj is absolute waste. But he can't drop him. It is no surprise he can do well. He definitely thinks way better than pretty much any of the Indian player.

Gutsy captain who isn't afraid to make bold moves.

Equally proficient in attack and defense. Knows when and how to use pacers and spinners.

Everyone knew he wud be a good captain but its a bit shocking to see how good he actually turned out to be.

He went for 3 completely different strategies in 3 games.

He won a game for Kings XI with his captaincy alone leading a low key bowling attack of just 5 bowlers with no backup option if anyone has an off day (which Sran had for most part).

His only negative is that he could end up overthinking during certain situations and make a wrong move.

As of now, the best captain of this year's IPL. Gun captaincy with a touch of luck.

When i get time, i will give a detailed breakdown of his moves.

The management and coaching staff contribute nothing to the crucial on-field decisions, which are entirely those of the captain.

In this IPL, Ravi Ashwin has proven to be a far better captain than the other so-called 'captaincy materials', Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane.

Kohli is a worse test captain than Dhoni and that is saying something.

Ashwin is a thinker of the game. If anything he is a risk of OVER-thinking at times. So far, he's done well. Its a bit early still, Let's see where he is at the end of the season.

I had him as my no.1 choice to replace Dhoni years ago and still believe he is the right man to lead his country or at the very least share the burden

He can do a good job as captain. No doubt. Impressed a lot by him. If Kohli wanted to save himself as a player, Ashwin could take over.

You just had to witness Kohli's captaincy today to realize the importance of a captain.

Kohli's captaincy in LOI is worrisome.

I am fully expecting him to screw up a game or two due to overthinking. :))

Just hope its not during knockouts.

May be he is cool under pressure (I actually don't watch KXI's fielding much:P). But, it's difficult to judge how good a captain one is from T20. I think, his ship has sailed - after MS there was 2 options for Test Captaincy, BCCI went for the batsman - already into 30s and struggling for fitness, and lost his place from ODI side (might have played last LO for IND).

Why can't they drop Yuvraj?

Gutsy and decent captaincy. Impressed with Ashwin the captain.

Begin Rant
------------
Arrogance has still not warded off. Thinks he can waltz in, bowl whatever he wants and get away. A 16 year old kid has out bowled him. Classic eg was the game where he bowled the last over v SRH. What a stupid decision. Yes, the game was done and dusted, but he gave off 12+ runs and reduced the margin of defeat , thus eventually affecting the NRR. Not so smart IMO.

After CSK game, in post match interview, clearly showed he was sore for not being retained by CSK. When asked about Dhoni, he said he backed his bowlers and Mohit. I don't mind that. Shows spunk but clearly I'm not sure if he deserves a place in any team as a spinner (off spinner, leg spinner, carrom bowler you take your pick).

Seems to me he is sore about Kohli and Shastri going to wrist spin after his and Jadeja's epic debacle in CT. He should be no where near Indian team in LOI's.

Ashwin the test bowler is still a class apart in sub continent
Waiting for Ashwin the test bowler to show up in SEAN (SA, Eng, Aus and NZ)
Ashwin the test batsman is more talented than some of Indian top and middle order batsmen.
Ashwin the Kings XI captain seems good. Very impressed with some of his changes.

Overall, Ashwin as a cricketer with his wonderfully ethical mind needs to walk the talk IMHO

End of Rant!

No. They are responsible for building the team in first place, there are 2 time outs per innings where things are discussed. If a player is a poor captain then in no way on hell will HE win test matches, where strategy and planning is crucial.

Every captain is as good as the team. Until Vettori and co leave RCB ka kuch nai ho sakta baring personal brilliances by few individuals.

No existing thread is suitable for this. So picked a random one.

Highest wicket for the decade

I will definitely have Ashwin in my all-time Test XI of this decade. He has been a ruthless match winner and his count of MOS proves that in certain conditions, he has destroyed teams single-handedly.

2010s test XI:-

Cook
Warner
Sangakkara
Smith
Kohli
AB(wkt)
Stokes
Ashwin
Starc
Steyn
Anderson
