ECB earned several millions of pounds (circa 100 million) from overseas TV revenue as a result of India's tour to England in 2021. ECB would have faced a financial crunch if this tour did not take place.

CA has a 6-year TV deal worth more than a billion AUD from Fox and Channel 7 combined, and would have paid out significant rebates if India's tour to Australia was cancelled in 2020/2021. This tour rescued CA from Bankruptcy.

CSA is going to earn $45 million dollars from Super Sports as a result of India's tour to South Africa in 2021. CSA has been facing a huge financial crunch owing from the cancellation of the T-20 leagues, Australian tour cancellation but India touring CSA is going to get their finances going again

Why will these boards not shove the PCB aside in exchange for being in the good books?

Does the PCB provide CA, ECB and CSA any such returns?

It did not take England a blinker to cancel their tour to Pakistan and even the risk of upsetting their own government didnt deter them. Remember Pakistan toured England along with the WI in 2020 at a time when Covid cases were high in England, where there were no vaccines available at the time and when the ECB desperately needed the WI and Pakistan tour to be completed to obtain 80 million pounds from Sky Sports.

CSA went out of their way to send their players to the IPL in the middle of a home series against Pakistan. Pakistan in return sent their players to South Africa to help CSA recoup some losses from the Australian series cancellation and how does CSA help to repay the PCB? By refusing to let their players play in the PSL.

Unless the PCB and Pakistan Cricket finds a way to change this, Pakistan Cricket is well and truly screwed regardless of whether Pakistan plays good cricket on the field or not.

This monopoly which BCCI control is the issue, most boards are nearing bankruptcy unless India doesn’t tour and generate them income.

It’s a miracle how we have survived without playing any Cricket vs India.

The amount revenue that could have been generated for past 15 years is unimaginable.

Its good we arent playing India. It taught us to stand on our own two feet

Ramiz Raja is an experienced person who understands how to adapt and branding is the most important aspect of cricket

Out of 200 Million Pakistanis, even if you find 10 Million people (INCLUDING non pakistani residents) who will spend money on pakistani team - thats enough of a market

Thats more people who watch cricket in Aus, nz, SA and I bet England also where cricket is declining

Its all about focusing on domestic cricket

i wish Pakistan makes its PSL season 3 months, ODI tournament 2 months, test season 3 months - leave the rest for important international commitments with countries that will benefit pakistan

pakistan needs to get away from depending on ICC and india and make its own brand, which they are doing.

Wow! That is almost a billion dollars of cash influx generated by BCCI. No doubt it has helped these three boards immensely. Great job by the BCCI especially with the SA tour. Though BCCI do have their own motives to do it, it still good on them.

Not sure why the CSA number is that small compared to the other two. Is it because of the economy? The ECB stands to gain even more in 2022 as BCCI goes right back to play the white ball series and finish up the last test. So yet another year of great revenue for ECB.

On the contrary, it is really good. The BCCI is enabling a whole lot of cricketers in several countries to follow their passion and take advantage of their talents. It enables them to have a career, makes the game better and gives fans enjoyment.

Must be the economy & the fact that cricket is very, very much a minority sport still in SA, whereas cricket has broad mainstream appeal in England & Oz, as well as much stronger economies.

Pakistan in comparison only has Cricket which funds and sustains itself but the PCB's broadcasting revenues are limited by the poor state of the Pakistani economy, piracy issues and the absence of a home series with India

RR has his work cut out in figuring out how to improve the PCB finances, Pakistans cricketing economy without reliance on broadcasting revenues. In this PSL season alone he has got sponsors on board for almost all the things that the PCB was paying out of pocket for in the previous editions ie Anthem, Umpires, Insurance etc

If I am not wrong - in the 90's India and Pakistan more or less were at a similar financial position. Even if I concede that India was stronger than Pakistan financially in the 90's - the gap is obviously not as big as it is now.

If you have to explain this to students of economics - how do you describe India galloping ahead of Pakistan in a matter of 2 decades - when both in India and Pakistan - cricket remains unrivalled as the number one sport.

India toured England in 2018 as well. Ramiz Raja mentioned it in a press conference highlighting the gross disparity commercially between Indian and Pakistani Cricket

Yes, that was during the previous broadcast deal. Only 5 India test matches are part of the current broadcast deal.

You could say this vis-a-vis any other cricketing country and India. Things like IPL and economies of scale play a huge role here.

have mentioned this numerous times as these threads crop up every year or so. india has a highly corporatised economy. large corporations stump up large money for advertising.

pakistan has very little corporatisation, from restaurants, to shops, cable providers, etc, all tend to be dominated by local entrepreneurs who fail to scale up due to lack of mature financing markets.

the sectors which do have corporatisation, banking, telecoms, etc dominate advertising, but given the lack of development in the rest of the sectors, even they are small and underdeveloped.

then theres lots of other stuff, but in a nutshell on a per capita basis pakistan cannot generate the ad and marketing revenue india can due to its very large corporations and more developed financial system.

That is true about India pulling ahead of all other countries but 1) the OP is talking about making sure Pakistan fulfills its potential financially 2) Unlike other countries (excluding Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan) cricket is not their number one sport.

The economies of scale explains to some extent India's success but I guess my point is IPL etc, are not particularly original ideas - Pakistan could in theory have the second best league in the world.

Makes a lot of sense. So to be fair then - just PCB alone cannot revive/resuscitate Pakistan cricket. This should happen at the very highest level - and then a holistic approach is needed where every sector in Pakistan stakes an interest in making cricket commercially strong.

yep, the good news is if pak were a moderately developed economy cricket would be financially sustainable locally, and chances are psl salaries would be very close to ipl salaries, esp given the must smaller player pool, however the bad news is that to get to that level, if pak started today, may take 30 odd years, as its taken india that long to reap the benefits of their economic liberalisation, and by that time who knows how big the indian economy would be.

Actually after reading what you wrote - it is kind of clear why the comparisons between India and Pakistan - at this stage of their financial evolution is so senseless.

Pakistan need to not aim to compete with or beat India. As long as it evolves a strategy/formula which makes the best use of its economy, resources - it will do good. But the current state of affairs is inexcusable though - so there's only one way left - up.

HitWicket I've edited OP as it takes a couple of minutes perusing the ECB's financials to disprove it. The ECB earned around 80 million pounds in overseas broadcast revenue from Sony in 2018 (the first year of the broadcast deal with Sony), and that deal hasn't yet expired. There is no reason to insinuate that the figure has jumped materially (apart from usual indexations) in the interim period.

The Sky domestic deal is separate and doesn't really distinguish between which country is touring (other than Australia), as it's generally a flat fee depending on the number of matches being broadcast.

Looks like we need to pay CSA a lot more than we do to get a series win in South Africa. :batman:
