Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, while addressing RIL shareholders at the company's 42nd Annual General Meeting said its much-awaited 4G telecom service Reliance Jio will go live on 5 September, and would offer free services (voice & data) for its Jio customers till 31 December this year.

Other key points of Reliance Jio discussed at the AGM
1) Mukesh Ambani said while data should never be unaffordable for anyone, the launch of Jio will move India from data shortage to a data abundant country.
2) Jio will offer free voice calls and roaming charges for its customers.
3) On the data front, Jio data will be charged at as low as 5 paisa per MB.
4) The Jio plans will range from Rs 149 per month to Rs 4,999 PM, said Ambani.
5) For students, Amabani said Jio will offer 25 percent more data, and the company will not resort to any surge pricing.
6) Not being left behind on increasing wifi spots, Amabani said the company will deploy 1 million WiFi sports across the country by the middle of next year.
7) Jio will also provide unlimited data for its customers at night.
8) On providing affordable 4G handsets, Mukesh Ambani said its Lyf handsets will be available at price starting at Rs 2,999, while devices for 2G/3G customers will be available at just Rs 1,999.

During Ambani’s 45-minute speech, Bharti Airtel lost approximately Rs 9,800 crore and Idea lost roughly Rs 2,450 crore of market cap.

Highlights of speech below

Should benefit India a lot, especially in a country where few have landline Internet and those that do have archaic speeds.

I'm satisfied with present services in my village which is provided by public sector company, 3g network, Broadband with minimum 1mbps speed.

with the investment of 1.5 lakh crores in 4 G Reliance has changed the game for ever.
Its nice of them for giving free 4 G till december, i am already using it since last three months and now i am addicted to speed.

One thing I've learnt over the years is with reliance's too good to be true schemes doesn't always come without a catch. People will jump on it but surely there is something that's missing

But the always do bring the price down, previously as well and remember docomo doing it too obviously these won't last long and they would go into a loss but the infrastructure and competition would had increased a lot of people "addicted" to data which was their play initially as well when they brought cheap calling rates.

To the Indian posters here, what do you think of the scheme...

It has been making the headlines for the last few days ever since Ambani unveiled the project in the name of "digital revolution of India".

Is it genuinely beneficial to the customers or just a sham?

They are trying but tbh I don't think i'll have the Reliance Wifi/ hotspot near my home to use the additional data which is included in their plans but hoping it would make other robbing services lower their price.

On Trial basis , Reliance Jio is running since past 3 months.
I am using Reliance Jio for last 45 days (SIM card with LYF Reliance phone)
Speeds are impressive - varies between 4 mbps to 18 mpbs (mostly around 9 mbps i got consistently)
Calls to BSNL landlines from Jio Phone are a problem (cannot connect most of the times), other than that its perfect!

Overall its good for the consumers , irrespective of weather Jio is good for you or not .

The advantage They have is though that the group is sitting on cash reserves of ~90K Crores . They will not make money anytime soon so they need that kind of backing . The big question is , will the big spending users move to Rjio ? Thats where the money is , at the moment nearly 70% of revenues come from top ~30% users . This may not that easy .

how interconnected are different parts of india to each other?

as in if a product in a sector is all the rage in south india, will it also be big in north east and north?

Most things will work in all parts of India if it works in one region .

I have been using Jio since July 1st week. I am highly satisfied with the kind of speeds that I have been getting with them (30+ mbps almsot all times of the day in indoors, since the 1st day of connection). using Jio for calling is another story, though. Except for the 1st month of connection, I have been having trouble getting calls working out from Jio number to all the other private telecoms (interconnect issues). Still, in this day and age, getting free 4G data (plus host of free Jio services, in particular, multitudes of TV channels) that too unlimited for a very long periods of time (in my case it will be 6 months when i add the new extension period) is absolutely fantastic.

BTW, the welcome offer has been extended till Decemeber 31st (Mine was supposed to get over by 1st week of October) for all Lyf and other early adopters of Jio.

Generally no. Because circle wise, the pricing, plans differ.

But jio is a big hit. I am not using jio but it gave me benefits indirectly because Airtel had to offer additional data to match up (some sort).

Don't have compatible handsets. Also Not buying a lyf phone for data only. So using jio is impossible for me.

I dont think he was specifically talking about Jio . Telcom we do have different service providers dominating different regions , but other sectors generally it holds true .

I am getting 36 mbps in delhi and 18 in my hometown. I am running my entire office on hotspot

most people are satisfied with 3g till they use 4g and 150-300mbps speeds. The smartphone experience changes dramatically you will find the same once you use it for 2-3 weeks.

Experience will be different i agree, last month i used over 72gb and paid only 11$ as BB bill, i will have to pay 6 times more money to consume similar amount of data on 4g network.

Interconnect will be a issue in reliance though. I hope other Telecom giants don't resort to petty things like not providing interconnect to lower down it's popularity, Which I feel have a very high chances of happening.

Most affordable 4G Data/Voice plan in the world ?

They have literally killed the telecom industry, facebook showed extra profit due to this free data.

. “In the fourth quarter, wanted to call out that we have seen an increase in third-party promotional free data plans in places like India,” Wehner said.

IDEA and Vodaphone have either merged or looking to merge, uninor is out, although great for consumers i say but what's the use of it,people just use it to fight on social media.

Take any side if you may, but Jio did what Ambani had promised - A complete disruption of how Mobile companies functioned till now . !

All the providers, who in the past used to give us 1 GB of data per month for 250-300 rupees are now launching 1 GB per DAY plans at similar prices. So JIO overall has been great for customers. If it does drive other players to the ground, I for one wont complain.. BSNL needs to stay though.

Ambani's have contributed to Rise of India quite considerably in the Digital space ...be it making mobile phones affordable enough so that even street vegetable vendors carried them...now this.

And now finance, they are annoying to be honest, a problem , they have become too big and unlike Tatas they are too centralized.
