Toss: Australia won the toss, Steve Smith opted to bat first.

Teams

Australia: MT Renshaw, DA Warner, UT Khawaja, SPD Smith (c), PSP Handscomb, NJ Maddinson, MS Wade (wk), MA Starc, JR Hazlewood, NM Lyon, JM Bird.

Pakistan: Sami Aslam, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Mohammad Amir, Yasir Shah, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali.

Australia won the toss on the first day of the series and promptly opted to bat - Lyon was selected ahead of Sayers while Pakistan went with an all left-arm pace attack with Yasir returning to the XI. Pakistan began decently with the new ball but every loose ball was punished with the openers hitting a boundary off each of the first 5 overs to ensure they didn't get bogged down. The swing eventually reduced as Yasir was introdued into the attack in just the 11th over. Wahab had a shout for LBW turned down as the bowlers looked to keep it tight and force the batsmen into a mistake. That eventually came in Amir's second spell as Warner went too far across his stumps to flick the ball and as LBW to Amir for 32. Yasir struck in the next over as Khawaja just chipped one to Misbah at mid-wicket with Pakistan finishing the session on a high at 89/2.

The second session began poorly for Pakistan as Rahat Ali failed to keep the pressure on the batsmen with Steve Smith manipulating the field well. Wahab came on to bowl instead and bowled some good deliveries, eventually getting Renshaw caught behind after he made his maiden Test fifty, a valuable knock of 71. Yasir and Amir bowled tight spells as Handscomb struggled to make runs at the start, while Smith also slowed down as he reached his fifty. Azhar came on to bowl the last over before dinner and Smith nicked one behind but Sarfraz grassed the big chance with the Australian captain on 53.

The third session began with some more loose bowling from Pakistan as Rahat gave some runs away while Azhar's part-time leg-spin also failed to have the desired effect. Runs were easier to come by as the batsmen got going after the interval. There was a moment of major concern for Pakistan as Amir went down in the field after twisting his knee while fielding and he seemed to be in a lot of pain. However, he returned after a few overs with the injury not a serious one. Handscomb finally got to a patient half-century as well as Pakistan took the 2nd new ball as soon as it was available. There was swing for Amir and Rahat straight away with Amir bowling a superb first over - in fact, he had Smith caught behind for 97 if Pakistan had reviewed but no one heard the tiny edge which was picked up by Hawkeye. The little battle continued as Amir continued bowling good lines with some movement but Smith eventually got to his hundred with a boundary. Australia ended the day at 288/3.

Summary: The 137-run unbroken partnership between Smith and Handscomb has firmly handed Australia the initiative. When Pakistan dismissed Renshaw, they had a chance to get to the inexperienced lower middle-order but the two batsmen showed grit and determination to fight out the tough period and then made hay when the bowlers tired towards the end of the day. It wasn't smooth sailing towards all through out but Smith survived two chances on 53 and 97 to put Australia in the driving seat. Pakistan bowled well in patches with Amir bowling tightly throughout the day while Wahab also bowled well at times but lacked the consistent penetration to down the Aussies. The dropped catch by Sarfraz may eventually prove very costly for the tourists. A hard slog awaits them unless they can make some quick breakthroughs early on Day 2 and then put up a good show with the fight - history shows that the opposite is more likely to happen.

Fall of wickets:

1-70 (Warner, 23.1 ov)
2-75 (Khawaja, 24.4 ov)
3-151 (Renshaw, 43.2 ov)

Seriously what a hammering. Dropped catches are still haunting us.

Even though the wicket looks flat, I'd see what Starc and Hazelwood do on this wicket, before coming to any judgment on its quality.

What happened to the predicted 220/7 declaration?

That was a load of nonsense.

Which team in their right mind would declare at 220 after 60 overs to try to get the other team out?

Such a shame Rahat isnt consistent with his line and length. He could be such a good bowler.

Time to drop him for 2nd test and bring in Imran.

But seriously isn't this pitch meant to assist fast bowlers? Why are the batsmen playing so well? I seriously hope that we don't fall like dominoes against Starc and Hazlewood.

Pitch usually quickens up on Day 2 at the Gabba. Pitch has been very good for batting.

A lot rests on our batsmen tomorrow.

australia will bat at least two sessions tomorrow and match will wrap up before lunch on day 4.

Looks like Aussies will wrack up 500 and then scoreboard pressure and usual inept batting from pakistan will kick in on day 2.

Same story yet again. They will get 500+ and then humiliate us with some short stuff.

our team just isn't ideal for tracks outside Asia. Hell even Wasim, Waqar, Inzi, Yousuf couldn't win games against Australia what to expect from these lads. But in general this side is not suited to these hard or sporting tracks.

I wanted a better end for Misbah, Younus, but that's life I guess.

This is what happens when you drop your best Test fast bowler.

Bad bowling performance more than Australia's good batting.

australian pitches are all about really fast, modern and athletic cricket

big, tall fast bowlers and batters and fielders with excellent bodily co-ordination and reactions

pakistan don't really look up for it here unfortunately to me

Wow, I went to sleep at 140/3 now I wake up and find they've doubled that score to 280/3!

Really disappointing this, now they can bat through till dinner tomorrow and make us bat the last session.

Is Amir out for 6 months? I'm hearing people say this but I do hope it's just a baseless rumour.

Bowled well in the 1st session but poorly thereafter.

Got the felling we are in for a hammering.

Not playing Sohail is ridiculous. Adds valuable runs and is better than Rahat.

Aus are all set to score in excess of 500. If that happens, it will be innings defeat for Pak.

Aus missed the trick by not declaring at 220 and have a go at Pakistan in last session under lights.

---

In all seriousness, wicket is pretty good to bat and Pakistani batsmen need to score some runs here.

I hope people finally realize now that Rahat needs to be shown the door.

He is a 5th pacer in the squad, at best.

Sarfraz has probably cost us the game. Australia should get 400 plus, gonna need the batsmen to step up tommorow.

Pathetic drop from Sarfaraz. Pretty much dropped the game.

Terrible captaincy from Misbah throughout the day, not one or two sessions, throughout the damn day. Literally has no clue how to use seamers. Cannot wait till he's gone. And I hope to God Sarfaraz takes over.

Good luck, while on his way out Misbah will recommend Azhar Ali and PCB will comply. Just like in ODIs.

If Misbah is bad, wait till Azhar takes the reigns.

It was my dream to see Amir & Asif bowling together. I hope it's going to fulfill soon.fast bowlers hunt in pairs. Pak just need one more good bowler may be Junaid can do the 3rd seamer job.

The first 20 overs tomorrow have to be bowled Amir, Yasir, Wahab.

Lord Misbah better not start out with Azhar and Rahat again. FGS, how can you be this dim? Starting out a session with your worst bowlers when you need wickets.

OZ will be all out for 450. Pak will do well to draw this test. Been mediocre after the Eng series. You can tell during the WI series the players had switched off. No longer playing with the same intensity.

Should've started third session with our best bowlers.

The only two reasons I can think of as to why Azhar got so many overs was because of the over rate issues and that he created a chance against Smith.

Maybe because to give a rest to four frontline bowlers too.

Barring Yasir, everyone was well rested and it was right after dinner so no excuse. Amir and Wahab were our most threatening bowlers at that time. You don't need to be a genius to realize that bowling them in tandem would be our best chance to create an opportunity. What's worse is that Amir and Wahab didn't bowl in tandem once throughout the day. Just awful captaincy.

C'mon, even a novice could see that chance was due to Smith not being fully switched on.

Azhar and Yasir had bowled quite a few overs so I doubt there was any overrate issue. Even if there was, they could've easily made up for it from 70-80. From 60 onward, 4 over spell each for Amir and Wahab, that's 68. Then 6 overs of Yasir from one end and 3 each from Rahat and Azhar. Finishing the day with Amir and Rahat bowling 5 each.

Sorry bowling Amir and Wahab together is too aggressive, we cannot let go of our philosophy of safety first even if it means we get demolished match after match.
