Mohammad Rizwan’s long tenure as Multan Sultans captain appears to be nearing its end, with major changes looming at the franchise as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) prepares to take control of the team.

Official sources have confirmed that the PCB is set to assume charge of Multan Sultans from the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) season, once the current ownership agreement expires on December 31, 2025.

A final policy decision is expected within a week, but the direction of travel is already clear: a reset is coming, and Rizwan’s captaincy is under serious question.

Under the proposed plan, the PCB will directly manage Multan Sultans for one season before putting the franchise up for auction and handing it over to a new owner in 2027.

With that interim year treated as a transition phase, officials are expected to review the team’s leadership and roster, a process that could see Rizwan replaced as captain and several senior players moved on.

Sources indicate that other big names, including Saud Shakeel and Australian star David Warner, may also be released from Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings, respectively.

The latest developments follow the exit of current owner Ali Tareen, who announced in November that he was parting ways with the franchise. Relations between the PCB and Tareen had reportedly been tense for much of the past year and eventually broke down completely.

Lol pcb managing a franchise team.
Ab yahi dekhna baaki reh gaya tha

This guy playing T20 is a joke in itself

Let alone captaining a side

And those who actually want him to play or captain really need to get their heads checked too.

After 10 years. They can't find an owner for franchise.

A country of 250 million + unable to sustain the only one sport that is played here is not unfortunate, it's diabolical. No wonder we are a laughing stock for the rest of the world.

This is utter humiliation.

Never heard of a board managing a franchise, even for an interim period.

These jokers keep hitting new lows.

It's shocking to me that in PSL's 11th edition we will have a team managed by PCB like they do with National T20

This decade has exposed PSL for the failure that it is becoming.

After 10 years;
- An owner is leaving because managing the team is not feasible.
- PSL itself will be managing the team because of failure of management.
- Struggling to find its own window and overseas star-cast.
- Renewed contracts with teams on a decreased price from 2016 in dollars terms.

Yep, PSL has been completely mismanaged and it all boils down to the same issue of different managements taking over the workings of the PSL since it's inception.

It's literally the same issue they have with the PCB personnel overhauls. Frequent personnel changes leads to instability in the overall process.

Honestly now, I am old enough to know this will never be fixed because no one in power wants this fixed. They are all in it for personal glory and looting the PCB in whatever time they are in charge.

Pakistan cricket will only see change once it's privatised, that's really the only way now.

Good idea. It's time to move on Rizwan in T20. It's time to blood through a new wicket keeper for Pakistan.

Now they don't even have the excuse of "we can't play infront of our own crowds" yet PSL has still been stagnant and has probably not generated profits people expected it to.

Is there a possibility of Agha moving here and captaining this franchise?
If category issue comes up.

Issue is, islamabad were quite clever in the last few drafts that they not only stole Agha, but also Mohammad Nawaz. Now Nawaz's valuation will be up, so these guys will have to release some of the top category players.

Plus Hesson is Uniteds coach, and now that he is pcbs coach it would be interesting to see if he stays at United or PCB brings him in for Multan.

With Hesson not there, than United may turn to their clubs own legend, Misbah for coaching.

With Misbah at the helm, alot of local talent is expected to be picked.

Cant wait for the retentions and the drafts, things gonna be interesting.

If Misbah is at United and Hesson moves to the Sultans, a very good trade can take place.

Hesson might want Agha back, so offer him Agha and in return get Mohammad Rizwan to Islamabad.

United has had a keeper issue, and Azam Khan is rubbish. Plus, Rizwan would be more than happy to work under Misbah who was his captain in sngpl since 2011 and helped him revive his career in t20 cricket.

Rizwans category will also be reduced aswell, wont be as high as Aghas so it will be a win-win.

What will make things more interesting is if from no where Ali Tareen wins a bid on one of the two teams, and than for his new franchise he goes for Rizwan.

I hope Rizwan chooses United if Misbah is the coach, only guy that can help him revive his t20 batting

Williamson khele to its not a joke. Rizwan khele to Iski cheekhain nikal ati hain.
Where have I endorsed Williamson in T20?

Besides, Williamson, Smith and Root are far superior batters to frauds Babar and Rizwan

Why Would Islamabad United bring in Rizwan? They have Andres Gous, or they will get him or a player of that level.

Shadab and Co are anti Rizwan. You still have not worked this out!

Retention and categories and whether gous is available for 3 to 4 years.

Rizwan would be a longterm here.

Plus, i am not sure if Shadab really thinks about the team that much, since he once over looked rashid khan and picked hassan ali due to friendship

Long term what?

He’s 34. He’s written off.

They have a younger keeper who will bat late in the order in the shape of Ghazi Ghouri

You are desperately trying to push this. Islamabad United signing Rizwan is completely against their playing style and identity. Stop fooling yourself.

This is like some Indian firm buying out Juventus stature club and turning it into a local Dhaba or Thaali shop

Rashid khan was a direct competitor to him.

Rizwan is a nobody in the first place. I would rather pick the u19 keeper called Hamza instead of Rizwan. Waste of time selection and totally unbalances every side he features in.

Rizwan is a ‘Rolla’ best avoided.

MS need Riz more than Riz needs MS. Rizwan could retire from all forms of cricket now and he would go down as a good cricketer and a good man. His nobility off the field is what sets him apart. Who cares if he can't speak English? Even Messi does not.

How can i push this, mayree kya jaseyat hai bhai.

I am just hoping it happens

Competitor in what? Rashid plays for afg.

Islamabad united having two leggies would had been unbeatble in the middle overs.

This is why i find Shadab to be a very dumb captain, he picked a friend over rashid and than friend later left united.

But you have to be realistic

Firstly I don’t think anyone will opt for Misbah as coach in T20. Maybe in the 2 new teams if they can’t find anyone.

Secondly, even if this does go ahead with Misbah as coach and pushing for a keeper/batter/captain as Rizwan, it’s just a repetition of the same stupid mistakes that have destroyed Pakistan cricket and have tarnished the names of Misbah and Rizwan in the process.

Misbah is best suited to just sit down and give his useless ideas on TV. That’s it.

Misbah is a well established senior in pakistani circles and now has good coaching credentials as he has been coaching SNGPL and faisalabad for a while, plus he has involved in coaching scenes alot with pcb during the last 2 to 3 years.

I am certain Islamabad will rope him in, if hesson is forced to honor his pcb contract and not allowed his own psl contract

The owners of United prefer working with non controversial people and tend to also avoid players involved in fixing. Their group is really sensitive regarding bad rep. So they have been happy with Misbah in the past due no controversies and might rope him in i think

He’s a crap white ball coach/mindset

If you want him to become the national punching bag again, by all means lobby for him.

He doesn’t know or understand white ball cricket. Plain and simple.

Well he won the psl twice... apart from him, only shaheen has pulled that off

If Hesson takes over Multan and PCB run the franchise then it would make no sense for Agha to remain at IU as understudy to Shadab.

I also think Shadab will be happy to get rid of him. But I don't think he likes Rizwan either so Rizwan to Islamabad is unlikely.

This is correct

The entire Hesson/Shadab/Agha lot do not like Rizwan. He doesn’t fit in that group.

Only a snake oil salesman would vouch for the return of Misbah as Coach.

Qualifications, experience, cricketing IQ/tactical nous, leadership and management skills is what counts. Only in Africa and Asia, where this mindset of "seniority" triumphs over merit. Return your "scholarship" and ask them to invoice you the refund owed to them.

Regardless of the merits of keeping Rizwan, it was unlikely that he’d be retained anyway.

The original 6 franchises have been asked to retain a maximum of three players by the PSL (a reasonable ask). The franchises are countering w/ 5 retentions, which is ridiculous. So they’ll probably settle on 4 retentions.

Any sensible management will retain their talented young local players. This’ll mean that they can retain them for years (see Fakhar, Shadab etc) and also have draft space for higher categories at the draft.

Multan already had Ubaid Shah and Faisal Akram in their squad last year. They’ll also probably retain Usman Khan ( especially as he can now keep) and either one of Usama Mir (reliable performer) or Akif Javed.

Thus, no space for Rizwan. He’ll probably get picked up by one of the new teams, as he’s still a guy who’s captained his team to 1 title and 2 runner up positions.

“Source has revealed that the administrative affairs of Multan Sultans are likely to be handed over to Aqib Javed, while Mike Hesson is a strong candidate for the head coach position of Multan Sultans, and national team captain Salman Ali Agha is likely to be made the captain of Multan Sultans”
