[REPORTS] Afghanistan to play maiden Test by end of 2017

An Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) source has revealed that if things go right, Afghanistan will be playing their first ever Test by the end of 2017. The source further revealed that the board is in talks with both Zimbabwe and Ireland and that they are expected to come up with the confirmation soon.

“We will play our first Test by the end of this year,” the source confirmed and later replied promptly with the names of Zimbabwe and Ireland as prospect opponents. “We have spoken with the boards,” he added. Earlier, a site had reported saying Afghanistan will play their first full series, consisting three Tests, five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) from December 2017 to January 2018. When asked about it, the source informed that “ACB held a meeting on Sunday about Afghanistan playing their first Test in 2017” and that “nothing has been confirmed as of now.”

Hoping this news is true, seen this news on a lot of sites so I have a feeling it's accurate. I reckon Afghanistan could be a very good test team

Afghanistan have had a good rise but I would definitely back the Zimbabweans to decimate them. They're full of confidence currently with their captain Cremer leading from the front. With the imminent return of Taylor and Jarvis, Zimbabwe could shape into one of the better Test teams.

How are you so sure that Taylor and Jarvis will return? I haven't heard any official confirmation. Yes it may happen but to say that their returns are "imminent" is jumping the gun a bit.

Also, in UAE, I feel it would be the other way round; Afghanistan would beat Zimbabwe in UAE. Afghanistan have won 2-3 consecutive series (in white ball cricket) even in Zimbabwe so with home advantage, they should be favourites against Zimbabwe. I understand that Tests are different to white ball cricket but Afghanistan clearly are a better team overall than Zimbabwe, as recent records suggest. Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan test series in Zimbabwe would be very close though.

Zimbabwe are hot and cold but they did beat Lanka in Lanka recently in an ODI series before pushing them to the limit in a Test, they actually had a better tour then Australia did. A motivated Zimbabwe has caused big upsets over top 5 ranked teams and have a proven track record despite their lack of consistency; Afghanistan are a good team in asian conditions but they will need to fair bit before I come to the conclusion that they are a better team then Zimbabwe.

And nothing is confirmed yet but there is talk so that is a positive sign, it will be a huge boost if Zimbabwe can work out a deal with Jarvis and Taylor.

1) Taylor's contract expires after this season. Let's see if he can even get a new contract.
2) Taylor claimed he'd return if the system improved. It clearly has and he wants to play for Zim and he isn't getting any younger.
3) According to reports, Jarvis is going to be offered big bucks. Don't know if he'd leave that.

As far as the series itself is concerned, Afghanistan don't have the batting in Tests.

Under the new ICC financial model, Zimbabwe will be receiving $20 million more than they would have under the Big 3 model. With this additional revenue Zimbabwe are in a strong position to work out a deal which benefits Jarvis and Taylor.
