Ahsanullah has released an audio message saying he has broken out of jail. He has promised to expose Pakistan Army. It is understood he is hiding in Turkey.

I really feel for the parents of the APS martyrs. It took them three years of pleading and sobbing before a commission was set up to probe the APS attack.

While the parents were still mourning and trying to find answers, Ahsanullah was being kept at a posh hotel where he even had access to a personal butler.

A while later, he appeared on TV and lashed out at India for backing terror outfits in Pakistan.

Think payback but could be something else also.

Ex-TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan escaped during anti-terror operation: sources

A former spokesman for an umbrella of terrorist groups responsible for much of the deadly violence in Pakistan has escaped from the custody of security forces, The Express Tribune learnt on Friday, a day after a purported audio clip of him set social media abuzz with speculation.

Ehsanullah Ehsan, the spokesperson for the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist group, escaped during an operation against terrorists being conducted on the basis of information gleaned from him, according to sources.

Ehsanullah, who became the spokesperson for the breakaway Jamaatul Ahrar faction after the TTP split, had voluntarily turned himself in to the intelligence agencies on Feb 5, 2017 – and remained in custody even since.
However, he had started sharing sensitive information with the security forces much before his surrender, the sources said.

More than two months after his surrender, Ehsanullah recorded a confessional statement on April 26, 2017 in which he had unmasked his handlers and facilitators. He had also condemned terrorist acts and the extremist ideology he once espoused.

“The so-called jihadis have misled people in the name of Islam, especially the youth,” he had said in the scathing confessional statement. “The crimes such as bombing public places and attacking schools and universities traduce Islamic teachings.”

The ex-TTP spokesperson had shared extremely sensitive and important information while in custody, which led the security forces to smash the local and international networks of the TTP and Jamaatul Ahrar, the sources said. Several terrorists from the outlawed groups were arrested based on his leads.

Ehsanullah would have to be brought to justice, but first it was necessary to extract information from him to take the anti-terrorism operations to a logical conclusion. “Some operations are still under way based on the information shared by Ehsanullah,” the sources said.

Ehsanullah escaped during one such operation against terrorists. However, the sources added that all terrorists and extremists – including Ehsanullah – would be taken to task.

The development came a day after netizens set off a storm of speculation about a purported audio clip of Ehsanullah initially posted on Facebook and then shared on other social networking sites in which he claims to have escaped.

In the clip, the man, who introduces himself as Ehsanullah Ehsan, says he had surrendered to the security forces under “an agreement”. He further claims that he had “honoured the agreement for three years”, but the Pakistani authorities violated it and kept him and his children in prison.

The authenticity of the clip has yet to be verified, though the voice appears to be similar to that of Ehsanullah’s. He goes on to add that he would release a detailed statement later in which he would reveal details of the agreement.

There has been no official word on the audio clip or the alleged escape of Ehsanullah.

Ehsanullah was the spokesperson for the Jamaatul Ahrar faction when the Mullah Fazlullah-led TTP had carried out the most sickening rampage at the Army Public School in Peshawar in Dec 2014 massacring nearly 150 pupils and staff.

However, Ehsanullah had claimed credit for countless terrorist attacks on behalf of the TTP and Jamaatul Ahrar – among them the Wagah border bombing of 2014; the suicide attack on Christian community members celebrating Easter at a Lahore park in 2016; the killing of nine foreign tourists in Gilgit-Baltistan in 2013; and the shooting of girl education campaigner Malala Yousafzai in 2012.

He also claimed Indian involvement/support for TTP but for some reason tribune decided to ignore that in this article. :riaz

Families of APS martyrs move court over Ehsanullah Ehsan’s ‘escape’

Families of the martyrs of Army Public School (APS) carnage have moved the Peshawar High Court, seeking contempt of court proceedings against those responsible for the alleged escape of the former spokesperson of Pakistani Taliban from the custody of security forces. Sources privy to the development told The Express Tribune on Friday that Ehsanullah Ehsan, the former spokesperson for the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist group, had escaped during an anti-terror operation being conducted on the basis of information gleaned from him. Ehsanullah was the spokesperson for the Jamaatul Ahrar faction when the Mullah Fazlullah-led TTP carried out the most sickening rampage at the APS in Peshawar in Dec 2014 massacring nearly 150 pupils and staff. A writ petition moved by Advocate Fazal Khan, who lost his son Sahibzada Umer Khan in the attack and is the president of the APS Shuhada Forum, read that the respondents, which include the country’s civil and military leadership as well as the federal and provincial secretaries, had assured the court that Ehsanullah would be tried by a military court and not granted clemency. “..now it has come to limelight, that far from trying the terrorist, Ehsanullah Ehsan was provided with the luxurious home from which the terrorist [conveniently] escaped,” said the petitioner in the application, adding that the claim has not been denied by the respondents. He further pleaded the court that no action was taken against Ehsanullah during his three-year detention despite clear directions of the PHC, “which is tantamount to the contempt of court”. Ehsanullah, who also became the spokesperson for the breakaway Jamaatul Ahrar faction after the TTP split, had voluntarily turned himself in to the intelligence agencies on Feb 5, 2017 – and remained in custody ever since. Bilawal questions PTI govt's stance over Ehsanullah Ehsan's escape

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday said the legislative institution of the country – Parliament – is not being used properly.

“Today again the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Ordinance was forcefully extended, which signals overlooking the parliament,” he told reporters outside the Parliament House.

He lamented that the opposition was not given opportunity to speak on why it was opposing the PMDC Ordinance. “Every political party should have the opportunity to present its position in Parliament.”
The opposition wanted to explain why the country’s students are opposing the PMDC Ordinance, he said, adding: “Our medical students are worried and we are their voice.”

Bilawal said: “People get upset when the government introduces such ordinances to support mafia belonging to the government.”

He said that such ordinances of the government weaken institutions and damage the country. “We demand that a session of the National Assembly be convened on the economic situation and inflation,” he said, “The government has accepted our demand and tomorrow we will discuss the matter in Parliament.”

The PPP leader also spoke about Ehsanullah Ehsan’s escape from the custody of security forces.

“How the government will now respond to the victims of APS tragedy after Ehsanullah Ehsan’s escape?” he said, “No JIT has been formed for APS tragedy till date.”

The grieving families of the martyrs of the APS incident are still demanding for a judicial commission, he said, adding that the heirs are asking to be told how the massacre was carried out but no response has been received.

People and victims of terrorism want response from the government on Ehsanullah Ehsan’s escape, he added. “Now how will the government legislate on the FATF? What will be the response to global community that we are fighting terrorism and our biggest terrorist has escaped the country?”

The PPP chairman also said the government, including opposition, should solve people’s problems through parliament. “If the government wants to put forward legislation forcibly through executive power, then it should abolish parliament.”

Ahsanullah Ahsan was under the custody of the Pak Army- ISI. He was being kept at a posh hotel. He had access to all luxuries so much that he fathered a child while in custody.

I think a deal was done with him to allow to him to escape. He gave away information about the TTP. Some of you may have read reports that members of the TTP were killed in Kabul at the weekend.

Its what they call a Quid pro quo- and by the reports the Afghanistan govt is not happy.

Pakistan establishment and agencies are very notorious for playing both sides and are masters of double game. Same tricks were being played with the USA, being an ally in War on Terror and also shielding Osama Bin Laden at the same time. And now they have let go a dreaded Terrorist leader whose responsible for death of thousands of Pakistanis and having alleged links with India, for whatever reason or deal.

Escaped from custody lol

Kya baat hai. Apni qoum ko bewakoof banana koi ense seeekhe.

And if he gave info so that they get to the heart of the organisation?

He gave up key intel. TTP esp. the brains behind APS attack have been eliminated over the past week in multiple coordinated attacks my "unknown assailants" in various parts of Afghanistan.

Did they cut a deal with him that if he never returns to Pakistan or Afghanistan and gives them intel on TTP in Afghanistan, they let him go? As mentioned above, a large number of TTP terrorists have been taken out over the past week or so, that hasn't been covered in the media.

Families of students martyred during the Army Public School massacre staged a demonstration on Wednesday to protest reports of the mysterious escape of former Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan.

The demonstrators, led by Shuhada APS Forum President Advocate Fazal Khan, gathered outside the Peshawar Press Club, and shouted slogans against the militant's reported escape. They also demanded the government to address the questions surrounding Ehsan's escape and launch an investigation into the matter.

“The news of escape has created a sense of deprivation among the APS victims,” Khan said. He added that the government's silence over the matter has raised questions.

“How can a terrorist escape from a highly-guarded red zone area? It’s a good joke,” he said.

While addressing the protesters, Khan said that the grieving parents have been struggling for justice but the government has refused to pay heed to their demands.

The victims' parents said that news of Ehsan's escape had reopened their wounds of losing their children to terrorists. The demonstrators were also carrying banners, inscribed with slogans calling for justice.

The demonstrators dispersed peacefully after recording their protest.

Last week, Advocate Khan had filed a petition in the Peshawar High Court, seeking contempt of court proceedings against multiple government officials following reports of the militant's escape.

On December 16, 2014, armed terrorists broke into APS building in Peshawar, killing more than 140 people, most of them children. The massacre, which was claimed by the TTP, had prompted the government and national institutions to draw up the National Action Plan and Operation Zarb-i-Azb was launched by the military.

Mysterious escape
News of Ehsan's escape surfaced when a short audio message, allegedly from the former militant spokesman disclosed that on January 11, 2020, he had managed to escape from the “custody of the Pakistani security authorities”. Notwithstanding his latest claim of being in Turkey, some sources believe the former militant spokesman is in Afghanistan.

Sources have said that Ehsan fled during one of the operations to capture and target terrorists, adding that the TTP spokesman had to be tried for his crimes but before that, all possible information had to be extracted from him to conclude the operations and that it was during one such operation that he was able to flee.

The audio message attributed to Ehsan, whose real name is Liaqat Ali, said that the TTP spokesman had surrendered to a Pakistani security agency on Feb 5, 2017 under an agreement. The message claimed Ehsan had honoured his part of the agreement and alleged that Pakistani authorities violated their terms and kept him in a prison along with his family.

The audio, which has not been independently verified, also claimed that Ehsan faced hardships during his custody and that circumstances compelled him to plan his escape.

The audio message did not provide details of the escape but said that Ehsan would release “terms of the agreement” he had entered into with Pakistani authorities, the “approving authority” and “the individual who had furnished assurances” with regard to its implementation.

Earlier in a call to a Pakistani newspaper, the former militant spokesman claimed that he was in Turkey, along with his wife, son and daughter but refused to say how he had managed to reach there.

Surprisingly, Ehsan’s escape was first reported by an Indian weekly — SundayGuardianLive (TSG), published simultaneously from Delhi and Mumbai — on January 18, 2020, barely a week after his purported escape.

Authored by Abhinandan Mishra, the report, quoting “Pakistan-based sources”, said the militant spokesman had fled from his safe house, where he was being kept along with his family. It further claimed that the following day, Pakistani authorities swooped down on Ehsan’s native place in Sagibala village in Safi subdivision of Mohmand tribal district and detained his father, brother and uncle to know about his whereabouts.

In his first interview with a private Pakistani television channel in May 2017, Ehsan had provided details of the working of the Afghanistan-based TTP and JUA and their nexus with the Afghan intelligence service, the National Directorate of Security and Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing.

The TSG story was shared widely on social media platform, however, did not elicit any comments from the Pakistani authorities and nor did attempts to get a reaction from the relevant quarters yielded any response.

Sources said that long before his voluntary surrender, Ehsan had started sharing sensitive information with Pakistani security agencies.

The news that former Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan has escaped from the custody of Pakistan security agencies is true, Interior Minister Ijaz Shah confirmed on Monday.

Responding to a question during an informal conversation with reporters at the parliament in Islamabad, the minister said he had read reports of the former TTP leader having fled.

When asked whether there was any truth to the reports, he replied: "The news is true, it's true."

The minister added that the "state is aware" of his escape. He did not provide any details.

Asked by a reporter whether the state was doing anything about the matter, Shah said: "A lot is being done. You will hear good news."

The confirmation comes following around 10 days of official silence over reports of the former TTP spokesman's escape, which had been announced by him in an audio message released on social media.

Mysterious 'escape'
Mystery surrounds the circumstances of the escape of Ehsan, who had surrendered himself to a Pakistani security agency under an agreement some three years ago, with sources saying that he fled during one of the operations to capture and target terrorists.

The sources told Dawn that Ehsan had to be tried for his crimes but before the trial, all possible information had to be extracted from him to conclude the operations and that it was during one such operation that he was able to flee.

Notwithstanding his claim of being in Turkey, some sources believe the former militant spokesman is in Afghanistan.

In a short audio message, which could not be independently verified, Ehsan had disclosed that on January 11, 2020, he had managed to escape from the “custody of the Pakistani security authorities”.

Islamabad, Pakistan - The Pakistani Taliban has suffered major losses from American and Pakistani security operations in recent years, but its cells remain active in Pakistan's cities and are still capable of carrying out attacks, a former spokesman has told Al Jazeera in his first interview since escaping from Pakistani military custody in January.

The group and its allies remain active in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan, said Ehsanullah Ehsan, once one of the most high-profile leaders of the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban or the acronym TTP, who later co-founded the armed group's breakaway faction Jamaat-ur-Ahrar (JuA) .

"We cannot say that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Jamaat-ur-Ahrar or other anti-Pakistan [armed] groups are completely finished," he said. "They definitely have a set-up and perhaps they have gone silent as part of a plan. They are present in Pakistani cities and they have the ability to carry out attacks."

Ehsan - whose real name is Liaqat Ali but is better known by his nom de guerre - spoke exclusively to Al Jazeera this week, breaking his silence on how he surrendered to Pakistani security forces in 2017, and how he escaped from a military-run safe house in an affluent neighbourhood of the northwestern city of Peshawar. He also offered insights into the operations of the Pakistani Taliban and the JuA.

The interview was conducted from an undisclosed location through voice notes exchanged over an internet-based messaging service.

The former spokesman was one of the most notorious Pakistani Taliban leaders during the height of the group's bloody war against the Pakistani state, which saw more than 20,000 civilians killed in suicide bombings, IED blasts and other attacks, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP). The group also killed more than 6,000 members of Pakistan's security forces, according to SATP data.

Ehsan said the killing of Pakistani Taliban leaders such as then-chief Maulana Fazlullah in a 2018 US drone attack, and senior leaders Khalid Haqqani and Shahryar Mehsud two months ago have affected the organisation, but not decimated it.

"Their ability to launch attacks has definitely decreased, but they are not yet finished," Ehsan said. "They will continue to try to prove their presence."

Ehsan had been held for almost three years, after surrendering to Pakistani security forces in February 2017 under what he claims was an agreement that granted him full legal immunity, a personal monetary stipend and a guarantee that he would be allowed to live as a "peaceful citizen".

Pakistan's military was provided with a detailed list of the allegations made by Ehsan in this interview, but offered no comment. The Pakistani interior ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

The civilian government also offered no comment on Ehsan's imprisonment or escape since it occurred, although Interior Minister Ijaz Shah did confirm in February that he was no longer in Pakistani custody.

"The first thing is that Ehsanullah Ehsan is claiming this, this is one side of the equation," said Rahimullah Yousufzai, a veteran journalist who has covered the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban for decades. "The other side of the agreement, the other party, is not making any comment. We can so far only take it as a claim by one party."

Ehsan said the successful US-Afghan peace talks, which were facilitated by Pakistan, had served to further curtail Pakistani Taliban activity.

"In Afghanistan, organisations [that target Pakistan] like the TTP and Jamaat-ur-Ahrar have to face increased difficulties when the relationship between the US and Pakistan is better," he said. "The US, in order to get its objectives [vis a vis the Afghan peace process] from Pakistan, is targeting organisations that are against Pakistan."

A bloody career
Ehsan, 31, joined the Pakistani Taliban in his native Mohmand district in northwestern Pakistan, when he was a university student in 2008. Serving first as the spokesman for his district's Pakistani Taliban chapter, he gradually moved up the ranks to become the group's central spokesman and a high-profile leader in 2011.

Ehsan regularly called journalists to claim responsibility for some of the deadliest attacks ever carried out on Pakistani soil, including many suicide attacks that killed hundreds of children and other civilians, Shia Muslims, Christians and others, as well as thousands of members of Pakistan's security forces.

In 2012, he claimed responsibility on behalf of the Pakistani Taliban for the assassination attempt on then 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai in her native Swat Valley, threatening reporters after the attack for taking the victim's side and publishing "propaganda against Islam and the Taliban". Later, he claimed responsibility on behalf of the Pakistani Taliban for killing journalists who were deemed to be "anti-Taliban".

Asked why the Pakistani Taliban and its allies attacked civilians or how it justified large-scale bombings and violence, Ehsan refused to comment.

"The spokesperson for these groups is not just a spokesman [...]," said Yousufzai. "He had his own guards [and] was part of the decisions and was very close to the leadership council. It was not that he was just a spokesman, and wasn't involved in the [violence]."

After his escape, parents of the more than 132 children killed in a 2014 massacre at an army-run public school in Peshawar, which was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, filed a petition at the Peshawar High Court demanding that he be brought to justice and that details of the agreement under which he surrendered be made public.

In 2014, Ehsan left the Pakistani Taliban to co-found JuA, the armed group formed over ideological differences with the Pakistan Taliban's leadership following the appointment of Maulana Fazlullah, a powerful commander in the Swat Valley, as the group's central leader.

"There was a lack of leadership, and people were very disappointed [with the Pakistani Taliban]," he said. "There were also [military] operations ongoing against the organisation. So at that time, in order to end that disappointment, we decided to make Jamaat-ur-Ahrar."

The JuA subsequently carried out a series of large-scale bombings, including a suicide attack that killed at least 55 people at Pakistan's Wagah border crossing with India, a park bombing targeting Christians celebrating Easter that killed more than 70 people, and a bombing at a hospital that killed at least 75 civilians.

At the time, the influence of the ISIL (ISIS) group was rising in Syria and Iraq and Ehsan says Pakistani armed groups were eager to impress it to gain leadership of its chapter in South Asia.

"The way that Daesh [the Arabic-language acronym for ISIL] was handling the media and its propaganda, there was definitely a race within groups to join them [at that time]," said Ehsan. "It seemed a solid and attractive organisation."

Ehsan's JuA claimed at least one high-profile attack that was jointly claimed by the ISIL in 2016.

In 2016, Ehsan says, he developed ideological differences with JuA's leadership, and plotted to escape from their base in eastern Afghanistan and surrender himself to Pakistani security forces under a negotiated agreement.

"[I had issues with] some of the organisation's actions, some of the attitudes, some of the methods and the dictatorship within the organisation," he said. "That is why I got sidelined and later I made an agreement with Pakistani forces."

In April 2017, then Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Asif Ghafoor announced that Ehsan had "turned himself in to our security agencies". Ghafoor did not reveal any details of how Ehsan was captured at the time, but the military did release a video "confession" by him.

"As a spokesperson, he was giving statements and defending policies, as is required of the position, [...] and he was the face and the voice of the group," said Yousufzai. "He was defending it very forcefully and vocally, he believed that [the violence] was the right thing to do. You cannot now claim that you were being told to say these things."

'Broken' agreements, easy escapes

Ehsan claims the agreement with Pakistani security forces granted him full legal immunity from any prosecution related to Pakistani Taliban or JuA attacks in addition to other privileges.

"Yes, I had an agreement with Pakistan's Military Intelligence [MI]," he said. "In the agreement, I was assured that I would be welcomed; that there would be no [court or police] cases against me; the cases that have already been filed will be finished; my home, which was destroyed during the [military] operation, it will be rebuilt; I will be helped financially so that I can once again start a new and peaceful life."

Ehsan alleges Pakistan's military reneged on the deal, placing him, his wife and two children under house arrest in a safe house in a residential area of the northwestern city of Peshawar.

"It was a safe house in a residential area, where all the needs of life were available," he said. "But we were not allowed to leave the house and we had security upon us."

He did not, however, face formal charges of court proceedings in either civilian anti-terrorism courts or in military courts formed in 2015 to try civilian "terrorism suspects", he said.

He denies persistent media reports that he aided Pakistan's intelligence services by providing information that led to the capture or killing of several high-profile Pakistani Taliban leaders in recent years, including its chief Fazlullah.

Analysts, however, say it is unlikely he could have been held as long as he was without offering assistance to the Pakistani military.

"Why wouldn't he share intelligence, the whole point of getting him to surrender was to get him to [share intelligence]," said Yousufzai. "And to show the divisions in the militant groups [and] that the policy of military operations is working very well, […] that people are being forced to surrender and are fleeing."

Almost three years into his imprisonment, Ehsan says he decided to escape along with his family, hatching a plan and sneaking out of a back gate of the house on the night of January 11.

"I was under house arrest, I was not in a jail, that is why all of this was possible," he said. "We left through the back gate of the house, which was located in a normal residential area. It was not in a military cantonment or any other military area."

Ehsan says his family spent "several days of hard work" to break the lock on the back gate, which he says was unguarded.

"From a little way outside [the house] we got into a taxi that I had booked online and we sat in that and left for our destination."

Pakistan's military offered no comment on Ehsan's mode of escape. Previously published media reports have cited security sources as saying he escaped during an intelligence operation in which he was taking part.

Not ready to face trial

In an interview with Pakistani television station Geo News in 2017, shortly after his capture was announced by Pakistan's military, Ehsan expressed his desire to live as a "peaceful citizen", saying he chose the path of surrendering himself because he wanted to "face the truth".

In his interview with Al Jazeera, Ehsan reiterated this desire, saying he had no plans to rejoin the Pakistani Taliban or the JuA.

"After my escape, I have not abandoned my desire and efforts for a peaceful life," he said. "Along with my family, I want to live a peaceful and normal life. I do not want to go back towards the life that I have worked very hard to leave."

Asked if "facing the truth" would mean facing a court to be tried for his actions while a member of the Pakistani Taliban, and to face any possible legal punishment for those actions, Ehsan hesitates before answering.

"Let us set this question aside for now," he said by text message, after a long pause during which he recorded and re-recorded several audio messages, but never pushed "send".

Incompetency of security forces! He even had access to the internet and he booked a taxi online to flee.

He is the same guy who was behind APS, isn’t he?

Ehsanullah is that very guy before he had a prison break and ran away to Turkey
The ttp is dead at the minute in Pakistan and is more active in Sri Lanka at the minute than pakistan
I think without the support of haqqanis and peshawar the movement seems to have floundered but could resurrect soon with their right allies

I think a deal was done with him to allow to him to escape. He gave away information about the TTP. Some of you may have read reports that members of the TTP were killed in Kabul at the weekend.

Why doesn't such a deal involve turning on him in the last second and taking his head off?

After all, he didn't hesitate when firing upon dozens of innocent schoolchildren of all people.

In the IRA Mi6 had a spy in their top 5. Sometimes you have to make deals with bad people. Notice that TTP violence has gone down in PK.

Ahsanuallah Ahsan has posted an Eid photo where he is seen sitting and smiling with his child. This is a slap on the face of every Pakistani!

He didn't escape during an anti-terror operation.

He was living in a safe house in Peshawar and given full protection by the army. He however felt cheated and after a lot of planning escaped through an unguarded backdoor of the safehouse and took a cab.

A lot of question but no answers from the DGISPR

Let's be accurate in our criticism and call for justice.

He didn't shoot a single school kid. In fact his faction of TTP Jamat ul Ahrar condemned the attack.

At one hand there are citizens of Pakistan who "disappear" in thin air, never to be seen again unless their dead body is found dumped on a sidewalk, and nobody knows why.

On the other hand we have a known terrorist, who was for years the face of TTP, due to his function as the group's spokesperson, who not only was given a safe house and monthly allowance but now has escaped the safe house and is throwing all sort of allegations at the security forces.

Silence is not enough.

We need an explanation for this fiasco.

Basically, army told him to get chummy with them and aid them in killing Balochi and Pushtun rebels.

Similarly how they utilised LeJ to clampdown on the insurgency in Balouchistan.

The boys will never learn!

He has released one more audio recording yesterday detailing his life in captivity and his subsequent escape. He has made some shocking revelation.

He says that the army asked him to lead a death squad whose aim was to eliminate ‘traitors’ in return for full legal immunity. He goes on to say that officials from the Military Intelligence (MI) offered to provide him material and financial support if he works for them.

The list that was given to him of ‘traitors’ included journalists, politicians and activists.

The former spokesperson said he declined the offer and began plotting his escape.

He also said that he was treated very well. He was given a servant, internet access, and a well-furnished house. He has all the luxuries. The MI had also enrolled his son into a nearby school!

No wonder Pakistan is known worldwide as a terror state! When will the boys learn?

ISPR refutes Ehsanullah Ehsan’s claims, says he escaped during operation

Ehsanullah Ehsan, a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan leader who acted as its spokesperson and claimed responsibility for some of its deadliest attacks, escaped from Pakistan’s custody during an operation, confirmed Pakistan Army’s spokesperson Major General Babar Iftikhar on Thursday.

The ISPR DG was responding to a question about a recently leaked audiotape of Ehsan in which he claimed he was kept by the Pakistan Army at a safe house in Peshawar and ran from there using a cab-hailing service.

“The comments made in the tape are absolutely baseless,” Major General Iftikhar said. The interior ministry has also said that he escaped while we were using him for an operation.

“He was in our custody and the information he gave helped us dismantle the terrorist organisations he was working for,” said the spokesperson. “I leave it to the better judgement of everyone to decide why he made such claims.”

Ehsan was infamous for issuing chilling claims following TTP attacks and has been linked to some of the country’s most bloody attacks — including the bombing at a park in Lahore during Easter 2016, and the targeting of education activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

He surrendered to authorities in 2017 and later gave high-profile interviews on Pakistani television. It angered many in the country who believed he was being pampered by authorities after years of helping lead the bloody insurgency.

In the audio, he talked about his conversations with military intelligence and the parleys that took place.

Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed that he refused to lead the death squad because he wanted to live a peaceful life.

“Shocking revelations” or fantasies? Because it sounds pretty dubious.

Where are those PP defence analyst who were saying that the spox’s escape was a strategy to hunt down Taliban leaders. I remember people were hailing this escape as an ISI masterpiece.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar has said action was taken against officers responsible for the escape of former Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan from military custody last year, BBC Urdu reported.

Speaking to journalists affiliated with foreign media outlets at his office on Wednesday, Iftikhar said that Ehsan's escape was a "very serious" matter that had been investigated thoroughly and those found responsible in the episode had already been proceeded against.

He also said "efforts are underway to arrest Ehsanullah Ehsan again" but that he wasn't aware of his current whereabouts.

Ehsan was arrested in 2017, but escaped in January 2020 from a so-called safe house where he was being held by the forces. The circumstances of both his arrest and escape have been shrouded in mystery and controversy.

Days after the militant's escape from custody, the then interior minister Ijaz Shah had confirmed the news as "true", saying that the "state is aware" without giving any more details.

Ehsan most recently made the news after he allegedly threatened Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai with a second attempt on her life. The TTP nine years ago had allegedly shot and badly wounded Malala.

Asked about the alleged threat, Maj Gen Iftikhar told journalists that according to his information, "the Twitter account which was used to threaten Malala was a fake account".

The alleged threat prompted Malala to tweet herself, asking both the military and Prime Minister Imran Khan to explain how her alleged shooter, Ehsan, had escaped from government custody.

“This is the ex-spokesperson of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan who claims the attack on me and many innocent people. He is now threatening people on social media,” she tweeted. “How did he escape?”

The charges against Ehsan include the horrific massacre at the Army Public School in Peshawar in 2014 that killed 144 people — mostly children, some as young as five years old.

He also claimed responsibility for the 2012 shooting of Malala in Swat Valley. In the attack, the gunman walked up to her on a school bus in which she was travelling, asked for her by name and then fired three bullets. She was just 15 years old at the time and had enraged the Taliban with her campaign for girls' education.

Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, a teacher, ran a school in Swat Valley for boys and girls. In 2007, when the TTP took control of the area, they forced girls out of schools and ruled with a brutal hand until 2009, when they were driven out by the military.

During his years in military custody, Ehsan was never charged. Authorities also later never explained how he left the country and travelled to Turkey, where he is believed to be living today.

During the conversation, Maj Gen Iftikhar, in response to a question about enforced disappearances, stated that the missing persons' commission had made "a lot of progress".

He said the commission had more than cases of more than 6,000 missing persons pending with it out of which nearly 4,000 had been resolved, according to BBC Urdu.

The head of the military's media affairs wing emphasised that "the missing persons issue will be resolved very soon."

His statement comes days after protesters calling for an end to enforced disappearances in Balochistan ended a week-long sit-in in the capital, after an assurance that Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet them next month.

The DG ISPR also disclosed that a few people had been arrested for links to the murders of 10 coal miners belonging to the Hazara community in Balochistan's Mach coal field area last month. He termed the arrests as "very important" but said he could not provide details.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has revealed that the government of Pakistan was in the process of dialogue with some of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) factions for “peace and reconciliation”.

In an interview with TRT World, the premier said that some groups wanted to talk to the government for peace and reconciliation. "There are different groups which form TTP and we are in talks with some of the groups," he added.

To a question regarding the help the government was getting from the Afghan Taliban, PM Imran Khan said yes, since the talks were taking place in Afghanistan.

The interviewer then asked if the government was asking these groups to lay down arms to which the prime minister responded: "Yes, and then we forgive them and they become normal citizens."

PM Imran reiterated his stance that he does not believe in a military solution. "I always believe that political dialogue is the way ahead which I always believe was the case in Afghanistan," he added.

To a question regarding recent attacks on security forces by TTP despite the initiation of dialogues, the prime minister said that the process was ongoing, suggesting there was no guarantee that it would reach any conclusion.

"We might not reach some sort of conclusion or settlement in the end but we are talking," he maintained.

Earlier this month, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had also said that the government was open to giving a pardon to TTP members if they renounce violence, accept writ of the state and commit to the constitution.

He said that Pakistan was concerned over the release of TTP members from Afghan prisons after the Taliban took control of the country.

"If they [the TTP] are willing to mend fences and not take the law into their hands and not get involved in terrorist activities and they submit and surrender to the writ of the government and the Constitution of Pakistan, we are even open to giving them a pardon," Qureshi said.

Earlier, President Arif Alvi had also made a similar statement, saying the government could announce conditional amnesty for the proscribed group's members.
