LAHORE: Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) has frozen bank accounts of cricketer Muhammad Hafeez over non-payment of Rs4.2 million income tax.

According to FBR, the board has also written to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Sui Northern regarding Hafeez.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s most successful captain Misbah-ul-Haq condemned Indian media for spreading false rumours about his non-payment of taxes and duty. The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that Pakistan’s Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq’s SUV was seized by the FBR due to the non-payment of taxes and duty. But, the Test skipper rubbished all the rumours and said that he is displeased with the Indian media for publishing such news without any proper evidence.

Misbah was also confronted by FBR last year in October when his bank account was frozen due to non-payment of taxes amounting to 3.9 million rupees. Pakistan’s most successful captain then met with Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar in Islamabad to resolve the problem.

Sources said that the FBR seized Misbah’s land cruiser after serving a prompt notice that he had to clear all duties and taxes with penalty to reclaim it back.

Wish they could also freeze his tenure as an international cricketer.

Pakistan cricketers just cant catch a break with the authorities

I don't accept the reasons given by these cricketers to avoid paying tax. They say their playing careers are short and they deserve to earn as much as possible whilst they can. Whilst that may be true, they are paid huge amounts of money compared to normal people and there is simply no excuse for not paying your fair share. The country is in a mess precisely because the wealthy don't pay their taxes.

Cricketers will argue, oh but there are far bigger and richer people then us who pay no taxes so why target us, why not target them. Rubbish. Those richer should be paying taxes too but just because they are so corrupt that they manage not avoid tax does not justify cricket players doing the same. I have no sympathy here.

Oh look how the younger lot in Pakistan must be inspired to take up cricket now.

Also I don't like how they act as if the day they retire their income becomes ZERO.

That is clearly not the case.

Most ex cricketers are involved in coaching at various levels whether it be departments, A teams, U19 team, NCA or even national team among others.

And the fact that every tom, dick and harry gets hired as a tv analyst it is suffice to say that their earning potential is good after retirement

Cant blame them, no one likes paying tax

Although in Pakistan, one shouldn't be forced to pay tax, because in Ramazan, banks deduct zakat withut any notice(which offcourse is stupid)

So they have to stop this zakat stuff first...

Exactly! Even crazy people like Sarfraz Nawaz get regular tv slots so they all generally make good money. And you're right that everyone gets some sort of role in the PCB, no matter how suitable they are for it. Even Ijaz Butt became chairman and even Intikab Alam became head coach. In fact, I'm sure Intikab has been in a senior position ever since the days of Ijaz Butt.

Some of them complain that they are not paid as much as players in other countries and they don't benefit from the IPL but the cost of living is not the same in other countries and the fact they don't play in the IPL is not the fault of people of Pakistan, who they are punishing by not paying their taxes. There are no excuses - it should be one rule for everyone, not one rule for the rich and one for the poor.

Yep nobody does like paying them. I despair at the vast percentages taken from my own salary - the British tax system!taxes citizens at a higher rate than most other countries in the world. But I have to accept it because I have no choice in it. If the super rich had a choice to pay, where they could go and have a quick word with the Chancellor, like Misbah and co do, I would be very, very annoyed. These cricketers are very privileged to be in their positions and they shouldn't abuse that power. Otherwise they're no better than the corrupt politicians.

Well this is how in US and CAN taxes are deducted, as far as I know (through my family members).

You works for an employer, work X number of hours per week/bi-weekly. And when you get paid, taxes are already taken away from your pay-check (via auto-deduct).

For contractors though, you have to file you're taxes at the end of year. And if you don't then there are serious repercussions.

Also, if bank deducts Zakat every year in Ramadan, then I should be ready in Ramadan, right? :), Shouldn't astonishing.

Furthermore, I believe, they'll have pre-set brackets, and they must be deducting according to salary range(s). I'm certain, it wouldn't be like if you make 10,000 RS and they take away 15,000.

Just reading about this zakat on Wiki. Do all banks do this or only the Islamic ones?

That is barely 2-3% if im not wrong

and its optional. If you want you can opt out of It but have to let them know

all banks unless you instruct them otherwise. its a few %age so it doesn't really replace taxes per se

I take it 'instructing them otherwise' is not an easy process?

tbh I don't really know. Was a teenager and never had enough money in my account when I was in Pak permanently last

im moving back to Pak end of the summer so I guess ill find out next year :))

Well I'd hate for chunks of cash to disappear from my account like that, hope you get it sorted.

Where does this zakat go? To the bank itself? Then it's just capitalism in action.

wont renew contract. Plan was to head back eventually anyway but some visa complications and my lack of inclination to go through the frustration and effort to sort it sped up the process you could say.

I'm sure they give all that money to poor people as they're supposed to, of course. ;-)

They do give the money to poor people.

However those people are not poor financially, but morally.

He's what 34-35 now, doesn't have much longer left, besides our test team is strong irrespective of Hafeez being in the lineup or not.

Why do we care so much about age? As long as he is fit and performing (which he is), he can play until he is 50.

And our Test team is strong without Hafeez, but it is way stronger with Hafeez. A very handy 5th bowler along with a flat-track Bradman - I'm sure any team would love to have him, especially in the subcontinent.

And an overseas Chris Martin. :steyn Imagine MoHa touring England, NZ, and Aus, opening the batting in Tests AGAIN.

they deduct it unless you tell them otherwise

majority ppl don't inform them
you have to let ur manager know, and he will create a draft for you. But still, its ridiculous to forcefully take zakat out of your account.

Age does matter.. When a 41 year old dude is your best batsman, it tells you everything you need to know about the quality of batting of your team. That's a horrible situation for any team to be in

Who told you he's our best batsman?

Update on the Mohammad Hafeez situation based upon what PakPassion.net have collated:

1. There seems to be some mis-handling of Hafeez’s case by FBR.

2. He’s always paid his taxes in full and there are no arrears or taxes due since 2003 (as alleged)

3. He paid 3.4 million in 2012- 2013 (in contrast the PM paid 6000 rupees!)

thats how it works in pakistan aswell, when working in a govt field.

zakat thing is just ridiculous

I believe, same tax deduction applies to all govt or not in the counties I mentioned.

Also, isn't it true that you can fill-up a form and submit to whoever you bank with to let the bank know that you don't want Zakat deduction?

Do you even understand why taxes are collected?

dont think so, or else the people i know would had done that.

Don't go for these masala reports.

FBR messes up most of the times, or the media exaggerates it in a humiliating way.

Taxes I guess are deducted automatically from their salaries.

typical pakistani mentality can be found here about taxes. please educate yourself why taxes are collected/paid

Nowhere in the world people like paying taxes.. In Canada we get free education, healthcare, excellent infrastructure but each and every working person complains about taxes.

Its not just a Pakistani thing.

Everyone should pay their taxes and it should start with nawaz shareef and co

Misbah is the exception not the rule- most players tend to decline markedly around their mid 30s and hence why Hafeez's shelf life is limited as an international cricketer. Also, he was chucking- can't call him a bowler.

It's only the people who never have enough or the uneducated ones who rant about paying taxes. I for one don't mind paying my fair share because it's a pocket change for me and I know exactly why I am paying taxes

Lol.. maybe when you grow up and actually earn money then you will know.

The biggest tax evaders are the big rich guys because the greater your income the higher the percentage of tax.

Why should the PM pay any taxes, we are all after all talking about Pakistan. I am sure he is crying about paying those 6000 too.

while we pay taxes sometimes you wonder whats the purpose of paying them. Esp for a city like Karachi which pays most in taxes but sees nothing back. no infrastructure development at all. atleast Lahore sees some work.

all our taxes do is to uphold and better the lifestyles of those in Raiwind, Model Town and Larkana

Someone who does NOT think that there is nothing wrong with his technique after making 43 runs in 6 innings?

That's one problem he has - he doesn't acknowledge his shortcomings.

But still, who's better? I'd like to see the likes of Masood/Manzoor/Farhat and all other openers we currently have as options replicating those 43 runs in 6 innings, let alone surpassing them!

Hafeez can also be an exception to the rule. Don't see why.

Also, as long as the ICC was fine with him during that period, we cannot take any credit away from him. He was a bowler, and a very clever one.

Unlike Misbah who pretty much has played the majority of his international cricket whilst being in his mid to late 30s, Hafeez was below 30 when he made his comeback, this is his 6th year since that comeback and he's no spring chicken now anymore, so his good form is bound to catch up with anytime soon and besides his batting completely disintegrates at a slight suspicion of a moving ball, so he will fail catastrophically next year and hence why I see ne reason why he should not be discarded in place of someone who actually has a chance of succeeding.

Well, my policy is simple: don't fix something that ain't broken.

Guess we have to agree to disagree.

No, I'd rather Babar Azam be given an opportunity rather than Hafeez.

I don't think much of him as a Test batsman, but I'd confess that I'm really enjoying his batting in Test cricket these days on these subcontinent/UAE wickets. He's batting like Sehwag at the moment, and hopefully it'll continue for the next few series.

He's the only one in the country who can get you a 150+ score at an 80+ strike rate, which he has done so twice in the last few Tests.

But he's also the type of player I would love to boot out, if he for example, averages like 20 over his next 10 innings.

Again, we are back to square one.

As I said, we shall agree to disagree.

Now, you will come back with another post, ignoring the line above.

I couldn't care less TBH, but yes the likes of Azam, Manzoor etc., can score on flat pitches against Lankan pacers.

do we know babar azam can bat better than hafeez with the moving ball after seeing him in one innings against zimbabwe on a rad and after examining his 35 FC average from 31 innings?

No, I'd rather Babar Azam be given an opportunity rather than Hafeez.

Babar Azam is not performing well in first class cricket. It's too much of a leap, at his young age I think to suddenly make it in test cricket. Let him concentrate on LOI first. I'm a bit worried he's debuted too early for LOI cricket, I don't think players debuting before they've learnt in domestic cricket is normally a wise idea.

There's little reason to axe a guy who is performing at the moment and offers a contribution with the ball. Odds are Babar won't beat that atm. To be honest all of Hafeez's competitors in test cricket have failed, that's the main reason he is there. Butt, Farhat failed. Jamshed failed as is now not even in international selection in any format. Shan Masood is not good enough it seems. Manzoor has not impressed. And Taufeeq has fallen away in recent years and at point of dropped was performing worse than Hafeez. Hafeez also has the advantage over many of those that he's a versatile cricketer who can play all three formats unlike Taufeeq for example. Our standard has been so low when it has come to openers in the last decade (in fact it's been that for ages, I mean you can only really think of two very good openers in Pak cricket, Anwar and Hanif. I'd take a 39 average over the 30 averages we've had in the past.

The guys I see ready for test cricket who aren't in the team are Haris Sohail, Fawad Alam and Umar Akmal. Guys who dominate the domestic circuits, have talent, and even have a little experience behind them now. Unfortunately none of them are openers. I believe we're missing out not having them in, particularly Haris at the moment who I feel would do well in tests.

Shehzad has done well so far and will hopefully continue this.

I've long thought a better solution would be to move Azhar to opening, but I'm not sure of messing with his position, it seems unfair on him. Then we could drop Hafeez and bring in one of Haris, Umar, Fawad. But not sure I really support bringing in someone like Babar atm, I think it would be more detrimental than good. At least wait until he cements his ODI place, and then by all means, get him in for Hafeez.

Kind of ironic, considering you're the one that's replying, ain't it ? :uakmal

LAHORE: Income Tax officials on Thursday held discussion with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) authorities having called upon the latter at the Gaddafi Stadium to settle the issue of recovering heavy amount of income tax from opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez.

Well-informed sources told Dawn that the Income Tax authorities informed chief operating officer of the PCB Subhan Ahmad that Hafeez owed around Rs4 million to the tax department, since the opening batsman has not been able to pay his income tax regularly.

The PCB has assured the authorities its full cooperation and may consider an option whether the Board can deduct some amount from Hafeez’ future income to pay it to the Income Tax department to settle the issue.

On the other hand, Hafeez on receipt of notice from the Income Tax department denied that he was a tax defaulter but sources said the authorities showed the opening batsman a full record of his tax recovery details according to which he is a tax defaulter of millions.

The PCB, most of its employees and almost all the players usually remain in the glare of the Income Tax authorities, for it is the lone richest sports body in the country.

Interestingly, the cricket governing body paid Rs500 million last year as tax but the federal government has earmarked a modest amount of Rs950 million for sports in the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2015-16 meaning more than half of the national sports budget is being paid by the PCB but the government is not interested in making heavy investment in the game of cricket.

It must be kept in mind that the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department had also sealed the Gaddafi Stadium after it won a legal case in connection with recovering tax dues from the PCB.

Just one day after the Lahore High Court announced its verdict in favour of the Excise and Taxation Department, a dozen of officials reached the Gaddafi Stadium on May 1 to seal the stadium wherein the PCB was busy making arrangements for holding the series against Zimbabwe.

However, the stadium was unsealed the same day after the PCB asked for a few days to pay the dues.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has imposed Rs 26 million tax on Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, sources familiar with the matter informed Dunya News on Tuesday.

According to details, Mohammad Hafeez concealed Rs 86 million from the FBR in 2014. Tax has been imposed on the 39-year-old as he failed to give a satisfactory answer, FBR sources said.

Mohammad Hafeez, who is in England at the moment to represent Pakistan in three Twenty20 Internationals, had earlier denied any tax evasion or asset concealment saying he files his tax returns annually.

Whoa that’s about $150000.

Is that his income from cricket or does he have other businesses/contracts.

.

It may be from the coaching sessions our Professor has been doing for Virat Kohli and Steven Smith , after all it’s only recently that they’ve both become better players of fast bowling so someone must have given them the batting tips and lets face it there’s not many others around with the subject matter expertise (SME) on how NOT to bat against fast bowling.
