This is a comprehensive list of success and failures of the 90's team vs the post 90's team. Which team has had the better successes and worst failures overall? Is there any truth to what Mohammad Hafeez is saying in the media regarding the 90's team?

Wasim and Inzamam, who won Pak the SF and the final, should not get any credit for the 1992 WC victory?

This is a comprehensive list of success and failures of the 90's team vs the post 90's team. Which team has had the better successes and worst failures overall? Is there any truth to what Mohammad Hafeez is saying in the media regarding the 90's team?
Amazing effort ! 👏
But I feel its incomplete without mention of match fixing/spot fixing, bottle caps and failed drug tests scandals.
They can be put down under Extra-Curricular Activities section of the Resume. :)

This is a comprehensive list of success and failures of the 90's team vs the post 90's team. Which team has had the better successes and worst failures overall? Is there any truth to what Mohammad Hafeez is saying in the media regarding the 90's team?
What's the point of all this?? How does it change the current situation of Pakistan? How will this always looking into the past make the team move forward and play modern cricket?

well they did play a weak india side in worlds cup didnt they, and yet they lost to them
But they won the World Cup in the 90s?
I understand Pakistan won the champions trophy and t20 WC post 2003

But you can’t compare when 90s team never got exposed to t20 WC. 90s team with the quality they had may have been able to win a t20 WC too. It’s futile to make such comparisons.

And loss to India alone doesn’t matter unless India performs better overall in the relevant icc tournament compared to Pakistan.
ICC event doesn’t just revolve around India.

But I can see a case being made for better test performances definitely. Misbah helped Pakistan reach number 1 in tests. That’s unprecedented in Pakistan’s history. Red ball does hold more importance than white ball unless it’s about the world cups.

Waiting for Mohammad Hafeez to come and respond.

If the 90's team had been allowed to play T20 Cricket back then, I guarantee you they would have won 2 T20 WCs atleast

This type of comparison is pointless because these are 2 different eras. Also, it was far more competitive in the 90's.

There were at least 8 heavyweight teams in the 90's and even teams like Kenya and Zimbabwe punched above their weights. It was a competitive period.

In present days, there are only 4-5 good teams. Winning against West Indies right now isn't same as winning against West Indies in the 90's, for example.

To answer OP's question, 90's team were better. It was a legendary Pakistani side.

Naah there are heavyweight teams now too. Pak just isn't one of them. Kenya and Zimbabwe are replaced by Bang and Afg.

Winning against NZ, India and England in the 90s is not the same as winning against them right now.

Hafeez for someone who has built this reputation of being the “professor” is pretty out of touch with basic stuff.

1. He talks about ICC tournaments. Aside from the 1992 World Cup, there were only 1996 and 1999, one of which they got to the final. It’s not like nowadays where you have an ICC tournament every year. Even from 2007-11, there were no less than 6, yes SIX ICC tournaments! Surely a “professor” would know this before opening his mouth.
2. He talks about ICC victories “inspiring” a generation. What did 2009 inspire? The rebellion against Younis the same year? The 2009 debacle in Sydney? Banning your best two batsmen (Younis and Yousuf) in 2010? Spot fixing 2010? What did 2017 inspire? Haven’t seen anything great post 2017 either. And all of those heroes of 2017, pretty much have thrown their careers down the toilet since then maybe apart from Fakhar.

So what is this “professor” even on about?

It’s a distraction and a waste of energy and time, and a specter of toxicity and mediocrity.
Having watched cricket since the late 90s, it’s laughable to even suggest a comparison.
Despite the lack of silverware, the Pakistani cricket team was world-class until then and middling after that.
They actually played a brand of cricket with aggressive Powerplay batting, positive intent, and intelligent planning and bowling.

They actually played a brand of cricket with aggressive Powerplay batting, positive intent, and intelligent planning and bowling.
Hafeez is not wrong, 90s cricketers were skill-wise much more accomplished than the 2000s onwards generation yet they didn’t achieve much.

If @Savak has had to go through so much pain to prove why and how 90s cricketers were barely more successful, it basically proves Hafeez’s point that the 90s bunch under-achieved massively.

I have been watching cricket since the 90s too, and we got smashed by the two best teams of that generation consistently - Australia and South Africa.

I remember the Carlton and United Series in 99/2000, where we were literally helpless against a rampaging Australia. The same helplessness we feel when we face strong teams today.

Wrong
Lmao stop perpetuating this myth that 90s had more heavyweight teams

They had max 3 great teams. Rest were mostly crap.

It’s much more competitive in modern era

But….. yes 90s team may have won more if they played t20 world cups. They may not. We don’t know. 90s team definitely achieved more regardless as they won the prizes odi World Cup

Naah there are heavyweight teams now too. Pak just isn't one of them. Kenya and Zimbabwe are replaced by Bang and Afg.

Winning against NZ, India and England in the 90s is not the same as winning against them right now.
He is just saying that you know why?
To make his Pakistan team look better than they actually are. There are other teams apart from pakistan

India was a laughing stock in 90s. Only good at home

England were fodder
Straight cannon fodder
Nz were trash until bond came in late 90s they became more competitive atleast at home.

Bdesh were non existent

Sri Lanka were good at home. That’s it.

Only Australia West Indies till mid 90s were quality sides
Then you had Pakistan who btw lost to crap teams like zimbawe
And I know people will say oh Zimbabwe have this and that batsmen. Lmao yea sure but they are still a fodder team that most teams would thrash.
Except Pakistan even lost at home to them in tests lol.

Zimbabwe is like lower than bdesh level now. That’s probably around their level.

Only India and NZ is better.

2016-2019 England > amy era England but current England is beyond rubbish. Their just a side that looks attractive on paper with big names but in reality all of their greats like Butler, Root are ageing and rubbish in odi now. With their new batters all being crap except for duckett.

And their bowlers have become trundlers, Once rashid retires their spin bowling department will be toothless as well. This England side isn't winning against 90's England unless duckett and rashid have a field day

Bangladesh current gets murdered by 2007 Zimbabwe and 2003 Kenya no difficulty. Afghanistan can beat 2003 Kenya but will lose to 2007 Zimbabwe unless conditons suit them in which case they can win.

Overall 2003 Kenya and 2007 Zimbabwe are superior.

Even then NZ of today vs NZ of old isn't a one sided contest and can go either way.

Every side from the golden era except for india is weaker then present. And even india is weaker from a batting perspective.

Fat rohit, end of rope kohli, Young inexperienced Gill, Sheryas, pandya, Jadeja etc etc are not better odi batters then Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly, Sehwag, Dhoni

Early 2000's to Late 2000's india would beat current India if you remove bumrah. However 1990's india would lose.

1990's pak >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> current pak

late 1990's aus to early 2000's aus >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> current Aus

2016-2022 emglsnd > 1990's England to early 2000's England > Current England

Current NZ > Past NZ

Current india with bumrah > Classic india = Current India without bumrah > 1990 india

people who think today's teams are > 1990-early and late 2000 teams in odi and test are delusional and it shows that their cricketing acumen is 0

Fakhar's career was also thrown down mate.

He went from being a generational batsmen for pakistan, a rare gem and our best opener since saeed to

A) Getting thrown in the trash bin in t20 by Misbah since Misbah wanted to desperately promote rizwan and babar.

B) Getting booted out of the test squad and management encouraged him to quit playing FC cricket.

C).Getting shoved aside for Abdullah Shafique due to SMGPL bias in Asia cup and wc 2023.

D) Getting shadow banned post wc 2023.

they've been trying to ruin his career since 2019 and 6 years later they have finally succeeded.

All the players you mentioned, Sarfraz, Haris sohail, Fakhar Zaman, Imad wasim etc etc have had their careers ruined by the roti gang.

Haris sohail is an exception but jad he stayed, Misbah would have found a way to remove haris for rizwan since haris was occupying the precious No 4 spot.

Pakistan has been blessed with talent despite it being an economical stagnant country.

1) Fakhar Zaman (Rare gen talent for pakistan)

2) Imad wasim (Rare find since he's the perfect no 7 and part time.bowling option for pakistan)

3) Haris sohail (God gifted left handed talent)

4) Amir (God gifted left handed talent who after banning redeemed himself by gifting us an icc win)

5) Shaheen (Prime, God gifted left handed bowling talent)

6) Junaid Khan (Underrated left arm bowling talent, Much better then Naseem Shah in his prime)

7) Saim.ayub (Another generational talent)

8) Agha salman (Not a generational talent but a decent utility player. Not a bad option to have in the squad)

9) Sarfraz ( Very sharp whiteball acumen, pakistan was extremely lucky to have a white ball captain like sarfi)

Some players who never represented their side but should have

1) zafar Gohar (Gun spin talent)

2) Mubasir Khan (Huge travesty that he didn't.play more games)

3) Ali raza (Needs to.be given a debut)

4) Ihsanullah ( Such a shame that he got injured, talent wise he is easily > Rauf and naseem)

^^ These are your players.

Also I'm tired of Misbah ruining everything. Even good players get ruined under him such as Babar, Shaheen etc etc.

No one is talking about 2000s.

Classic India is the 2000s team which culminated in the 11 WC.

The classic 90s Pakistan team ended in the 2003 WC and that is what all the hullabaloo is about. 2003 WC match is the only match where the "classic" iteration of these two teams played, both in opposite ends of their trajectory.

And the point was about 90s vs post 90s teams and those post 90s Pak teams have lost to England, NZ and Ind a lot who used to get defeated by the 90s Pak teams simply cause those three teams were weaker.

The post you replied to aka @sweep_shot was referring to why teams from 1990 to late 2000's were massively superior to teams of today.

Cricket teams have gotten much weaker in both odi and tests due to the rise of t20 cricket.

Even India from a batting perspective has gotten weaker. With the exception of jaiswal, None of india's current talent pool especially Gill seem poised to be legendary test batters by any means.

Same with Australia and NZ.

T20 teams have gotten stronger excpet for minnows pak included but every team has a weaker odi and test lineup.

Even india's early 2000 test team is wiping the floor with current India. And in odi, Bumrah and 2000's india's rubbish bowling attack will probably cause them to lose in odi. But they still have a better batting lineup then current India.

The sooner Pakistani fans such as yourself realize the true meaning of the word "talent", the better.

2) Imad wasim (Rare find since he's the perfect no 7 and part time.bowling option for pakistan)

A slightly upgraded Yousuf Pathan at best.

3) Haris sohail (God gifted left handed talent)

A left handed Mohammad Kaif. Lol at god gifted.

4) Amir (God gifted left handed talent who after banning redeemed himself by gifting us an icc win)

Giving him credit for that win is like giving Joginder Sharma a knighthood for the 2007 final.

5) Shaheen (Prime, God gifted left handed bowling talent)

Not even 30% of other left-handed bowlers this century: Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, etc. Even someone like a Zaheer Khan has had a better, more wholesome career.

6) Junaid Khan (Underrated left arm bowling talent, Much better then Naseem Shah in his prime)

Another guy who looks good for a year before fading away.

7) Saim.ayub (Another generational talent)

As of now, a no-name. Lol at generational talent.

8) Agha salman (Not a generational talent but a decent utility player. Not a bad option to have in the squad)

Another no-name.

This wasn't directed at you and was written in accordance with Pakistan and not global comparisons.

I get it. But achievement isn’t just silverware. Aus was too good during their team.
It was a much more enjoyable and watchable side. It may not have won the final of 99, but at least it reached the final which we haven’t done since.

You have reached 2 T20 world cup finals, 1 T20 world cup win and 1 CT win.
90s are just mooching of by their hypothetical aura and jazbaa .. They got lucky in 92 and their special tactics as technology improved the scrutiny. How funny were the freak injuries around major matches?? Avoid drug tests or failing them or match fixing??

That 90s-early 2000s Pakistan team was just different.

- Openers went hard in the Powerplay—Saeed, Aamir, Imran Nazir, even Afridi on his day. None of the BS backward tuk tuk of today.
- Middle order had class—Inzi, Yousuf, Ijaz, all proper batters who rotated the strike rather than blocking marathons since Misbah era.
- The Ws were unreal—both ended up with 400+ ODI wickets, and then you had Shoaib of 1997-2003 bowling 155+. How many fast bowlers are bowling 155+ again? Let alone 10 over spells.
- Spinners? Saqi and Mushi fighting for a spot, both world-class. Saqi’s doosra invention bamboozeled everyone in the 90s. There was innovation.
- Razzak of later 90s early 2000s was as solid an all-rounder as you could ask for. He had the kind of powerhitting most teams want.

Sure, they didn’t always win, but man, they were fun to watch. More skill, more flair, and just more exciting cricket overall.
