Babar Azam moves to Peshawar Zalmi

• Haider Ali and Shoaib Malik move to Karachi Kings; Peshawar Zalmi get first supplementary round pick

• Lahore Qalandars retain Shaheen Afridi and Rashid Khan; Multan Sultans keep Mohammad Rizwan; Shadab Khan stays at Islamabad United; Nawaz remains in Quetta Gladiators

• Six teams finalise trades and retention lists

• 493 foreign players register for player draft

• Foreign players, from time to time, reflect on how the quality and competitiveness of the HBL PSL has helped them in enhancing their skillset, says Tournament Director Usman Wahla

Lahore, 11 November 2022:

Pakistan all-format captain and the most successful batter in the history of the tournament, Babar Azam, will don Peshawar Zalmi colours in the eighth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League.

In one of the biggest trades of the tournament, 2017 champions Peshawar Zalmi snapped Babar in the Platinum category and the first pick in the supplementary round for Haider Ali and Shoaib Malik who move to Karachi Kings, the winners of the 2020 edition, in Platinum and Diamond categories, respectively, before the trade and retention window closed on Friday evening.

During the trade and retention window, a side can assemble up to eight players before the HBL PSL Player Draft, in which it can increase the squad side to 18 players - three each in Platinum, Diamond and Gold categories, five Silver, two Emerging and up to two Supplementary categories.

Babar Azam, who was at Islamabad United before moving to Karachi Kings, is the only player in Platinum category for Peshawar Zalmi. Wahab Riaz and Sherfane Rutherford are in Diamond, while Mohammad Haris, who has lightened up the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with his fearless batting, is in Gold. Peshawar Zalmi are the only side to retain seven players.

Haider is Karachi’s only player in the platinum category, while Shoaib joins Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir in the Diamond. They have retained Sharjeel Khan, Mir Hamza and Aamir Yamin in the Silver category and Qasim Akram in the Emerging.

Lahore Qalandars, the defending champions, have kept retained Shaheen Afridi, their captain, and Rashid Khan in the Platinum category. All-rounder David Wiese stays in Diamond category. While Lahore have retained seven players, they will announce their eighth retention in due course.

Multan Sultans, the winners of the 2021 edition and the finalists in the last one, have retained middle-order batters Khushdil Shah and Rilee Rossouw in Diamond category and Tim David in Gold. Their captain Mohammad Rizwan, the highest run getter in T20 Internationals since the beginning of 2021 and the player of HBL PSL 2021, is their only retention in the Platinum. Fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani, named Multan Sultans’ Brand Ambassador, he joins David in Gold category.

Islamabad United, the winners of the inaugural and third editions in 2016 and 2018, have retained their captain Shadab Khan in the Platinum category. They have kept two players in the Diamond with Asif Ali being named as the Brand Ambassador and Mohammad Wasim Jnr. Azam Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Ali will continue with United in Gold.

Quetta Gladiators have retained Mohammad Nawaz, who has been with them since the inaugural edition, in the Platinum. Jason Roy and Iftikhar Ahmed are retained in Diamond category. Their captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mohammad Hasnain (Brand Ambassador) are in the Gold category.

As it was last year, each of the six sides will have the Right to Match Card that will allow them to pick any player released from their roster during the draft.

Complete list of retained players:

Islamabad United: Shadab Khan (Platinum). Asif Ali (Brand Ambassador) and Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Diamond). Azam Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Hasan Ali (Gold). Colin Munro and Paul Stirling (Silver).

Karachi Kings: Haider Ali (Platinum). Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir and Shoaib Malik (Diamond). Aamir Yamin, Mir Hamza and Sharjeel Khan (Silver). Qasim Akram (Emerging)

Lahore Qalandars: Rashid Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Platinum). David Wiese (Diamond). Abdullah Shafique (Gold). Harry Brook and Kamran Ghulam (Silver). Zaman Khan (Emerging). Eighth retention to be announced in due course.

Multan Sultans: Mohammad Rizwan (Platinum). Khushdil Shah, Rilee Rossouw and Shan Masood (Diamond). Shahnawaz Dahani (Brand Ambassador) and Tim David (Gold). Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah (Emerging).

Peshawar Zalmi: Babar Azam (Platinum). Sherfane Rutherford and Wahab Riaz (Diamond). Mohammad Haris (Gold). Aamir Jamal (Brand Ambassador), Salman Irshad and Tom-Kohler Cadmore (Silver).

Quetta Gladiators: Mohammad Nawaz (Platinum). Iftikhar Ahmed and Jason Roy (Diamond). Mohammad Hasnain and Sarfaraz Ahmed (Gold). Naveen ul Haq, Umar Akmal (Mentor) and Will Smeed (Silver)

Meanwhile, leading T20 cricketers from around the globe have registered themselves for the HBL PSL Player Draft 2023. Four hundred and ninety-three players, of which 29 are in Platinum category and 81 in Diamond (names below), from both full member and associate nations have made themselves available for the player draft.

The maximum number of foreign players to register are from England (140). The next on the list – from full members - are Sri Lanka (60), Afghanistan (43), West Indies (38), Bangladesh (28), South Africa (25), Australia (14), Zimbabwe (11) and Ireland (nine).

PSL Tournament Director Usman Wahla: “Today we have checked another box on our journey towards the HBL Pakistan Super League 8. It gives me immense pleasure that the HBL PSL has transformed into one of the most successful and sought after leagues, and the interest and willingness of the T20 superstars from around the world to be a part of it is a testimony.

“Foreign players, from time to time, reflect on how the quality and competitiveness of the HBL PSL has helped them in enhancing their skillset. With every passing day, we are stepping up our efforts to ensure that the upcoming edition goes down as the best to have taken place. The presence of these superstars will light up the stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Rawalpindi.”

Thank God we got rid of Haider.

Haris has made him irrelevant for both Pakistan and Zalmi.

Big Boss Sharjeel retained and Babar out!

Well done KK

Mr 5 domestic centuries!

First ever PSL centurion

The Witch King of Shwarma!

Sharjeeeeeeel Khaaaaaan!!!!

Finch, Hales, Ngidi, Hasaranga, Miller, Shakib. Some big names in the draft that's excellent to see.

PSL 8 will be a cracker in the backyard of world champions.

Qalandars. Thank you for retaining Brook and Abdullah.

All this cringeworthy cheerleading for a guy who couldn't run two two's in an over if his life depended on it.

KK sign Rassie Van Der Dussen if fully available

He is a huuuuuuuuge upgrade to Babar!

Oh yeah running 2 is the epitome of T20 powerplay batting?

RizBar fans are like hobbits/harefoots

Their opinion on T20 batting means nothing in the grand scheme of things!

Ok boomer. Talk to me when your favorite player reaches the Pakistan A side.

Looks like PZ is a team worth supporting now that they have gotten rid of Akmal and Malik. And why on Earth was Haider a platinum player? What was KK thinking while taking him? Brainless stuff from KK.

Because he is BIG SHOW in the middle order.

Multan fans can celebrate the stylish Shan Masood in the middle order

Another fat, talentless hack making a mockery of this sport and those who actually take it seriously. I mean it's bad enough having one...

Shan will probably be opening like last time.

Why has PCB made Rahkeem Cornwall platinum if they don’t value what the cricketer offers without the fitness element

Quetta gladiators are making blunders. They let go Naseem shah and retain husnain while umar akmal is also retained 😂😂😂😂😂

Mir Hamza is a beautiful left arm seamer for powerplay

He can bowl

All their bowlers are essentially powerplay bowlers. Yamin is solid with the new ball but useless after that and the same applies for Imad Wasim.

Karachi year after year have the slowest pace attack and it looks like we'll get another year of that.

I am also not sure what Quetta is doing retaining Umar Akmal. He hasn't done anything in years and is so bad now that he is not performing well in 2nd XI in FC.

Naseem wanted to go apparently

No point keeping behind someone who doesn’t want to stay

He’ll do more for Karachi than Babar did last season no more slow batting up top and losing most of the matches you would rather get out early the do that.

What does the PCB have to do with this? If they gave a damn about fitness than Azam Khan wouldn't have played a single match for Pakistan.

They definitely need a proper seamer

Let’s see if they can get Naseem or maybe even Ihsanullah from KPK

What's more laughable is how Umar Akmal is a mentor?

Would love to see Karachi draft Saim Ayub to continue with that Sharjeel/Ayub partnership we've seen and please for the love of god, pick some actual fast bowlers who can bowl in death.

Draft Abrar too - can't recall if he was someone they could have retained or not though.

Seems he is fedup with sarfraz antic as a captain

Can’t say

A lot of the current Pakistan players are quite divided with the recently former players

Misbah/Ramiz created these divisions unfortunately

Saim is QG discovery, he will probably be with them

Why would you make this announcement 2 days before the world cup final. Players should not get worried about PSL contracts.

Come on man you know how disrespectful sarfraz can be especially to the bowlers when they are hit for boundary. You would have probably RKO him if he tried to dictate you .So naseem decision makes sense

Well for these young cricketers it’s a bit different. For us viewers it’s different

A lot of these young players/bowlers have a lot of respect and love for Sarfaraz. He can come across as an agitated person but he doesn’t abandon his bowlers unless they are completely in the dumps and can’t move on

Nadeem Omar is probably one of the dumbest franchise owners in this league. The guy has zero vision and is only interested in maintaining his friendships with Sarfraz and Moin Khan.

If they had any brains, he would have made Nawaz captain and retained guys like Naseem Shah and Saim Ayub, who could have been the future of their franchise.

Instead, we are going to get another season of Umar freakin' Akmal in the top-order...Sarfraz acting like the captain of a Ramzan Cricket tournament team and a new crop of big overseas names who will come and be gone by next season.

Small ray of hope are Ifti and Nawaz.

make him open with sharjeel, where he was always meant to play, right hand left hand combo, two of the best hitters in Pakistan. yes, its a gamble, but the payoff is real if it comes off, would be the most explosive opening partnership in psl (from the retained players), if, and its a big if, it comes off.

its great for haider, if they are paying platinum money for him i doubt they'll keep him down at 5 or 6.

How can you retain someone who’s heart isn’t there? He did the right thing

Perhaps worth questioning why his heart isn't there anymore? QG was the franchise he started out for.

Wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with the gully cricket captain at the helm, who chews his bowlers' heads out after every ball.

No I think he has more friends at IU or PZ

He might want to be with some of his friends. We don’t know so we shouldn’t speculate

Kamran Akmal playing is devaluing the league IMO

He needs to go. He hasn’t maintained his fitness like Malik has and Hafeez is also on his last granny legs

LMAO where was this concern about fitness standards when I was talking about your boy...the lumber 1 opener in the league, Sharjeel Khan?

Akmal should be kicked to the curb, no doubt, but keep in mind he is only a few years older than your boy.

Exactly .Nawaz is there premier player also his performances in t20 format is top notch which make him decent option of captaincy.

lahore didnt retain haris, or is there some last minute negotiations on keeping him? would be big blow for haris to leave lahore, although I'm guessing any other franchise would want him.

You can’t retain someone who didn’t play for you last year (I.e. Saim Ayub, who played 2 seasons ago). However, given Saim’s relationship w/ Sarfi it’s almost guaranteed he gets picked by QG. The draft isn’t as open as is suggested.

QG also have very good placements in the draft order (they’ve got the 2nd pick in platinum round 1, LQ have pick 1 which is guaranteed to be Fakhar). They’ve also got the 1st platinum pick in round 2 and 3rd pick in round 3. They genuinely have the prospect of getting big overseas names who may stick around, like Roy has. That helps build the base of the team for when Sarfi moves on

Didn't know you were capable of destroying a player's career by posting on PP. Can I share your power bro? :yk2

IU probs didn't retain Hales cause of his category. There's Shadab and Asif there already in Platinum I think.
They may use right to match to get Hales back.

LMAO where was this concern about fitness standards when I was talking about your boy...the lumber 1 opener in the league, Sharjeel Khan?

Akmal should be kicked to the curb, no doubt, but keep in mind he is only a few years older than your boy.

I view cricket differently to you, and I will call a spade a spade.

Sharjeel isn’t a 40 year old has been who’s reflexes are completely gone.

It is. Which is why their attempt to make a star out of Azam freakin' Khan makes me want to throw up.

Azam is in a lower category. Hales is in Platinum I guess. They also have right to match card.

Getting Stirling in silver is a steal.

Thank God we got rid of Haider.

Haris has made him irrelevant for both Pakistan and Zalmi.

I don't know why but it's so heartening to see you owning up a team in PSL or Pak Cricket. This is heartwarming stuff.

Bro, Roy's form has been dogs**t for over a year now. He's not a player you can rely on right now to carry your season. And knowing Quetta, they will probably throw their money at a big name like Aaron Finch.

They can still pick Saim but some other team can pick him too. What's more telling though is the level of confidence in players who are past their prime and will never amount to anything significant going forward (Sarfraz, Ukmal) and the lack of confidence in a guy like Saim, who they could have invested in and built their franchise around. Kinda like IU did with Shadab and LQ did with Haris, Fakhar, Shaheen.

I view cricket differently to you, and I will call a spade a spade.

Sharjeel isn’t a 40 year old has been who’s reflexes are completely gone.

You're right. He's a 37-year-old pretending to be a 33-year-old whose reflexes are already gone because he's fat, and overweight.

IU retain Azam Khan and Munro, but let Hales go :facepalm

look at the brightside man. Hasssan ALi being shifted to gold means we can get Iftikhar back. I hope they work out a trade with KK for Azam Khan and Ifti

Didn't know you were capable of destroying a player's career by posting on PP. Can I share your power bro? :yk2

I can't take too much credit for pointing out the obvious with a guy like Sharjeel. I think the people cheerleading him need to maybe re-examine if they even understand cricket anymore.

look at the brightside man. Hasssan ALi being shifted to gold means we can get Iftikhar back. I hope they work out a trade with KK for Azam Khan and Ifti

Uff I need Ifti back in this team bad. Especially now that he is in the alpha chad phase of his career.

So Fakhar Zaman not retained by LQ?

Big chance to finally make the Fakha+Sharj combination to come to life

It’s time for Stone Cold and Goldberg of Pakistan openers to unite!

Poor marketing by PCB and its franchise.

Trades should be announced by the franchise on social media and press conference.

WHat is this press release by PCB and everything being announced on a single day. THis league fails in creating any hype or news.

PAthetic

You're right. He's a 37-year-old pretending to be a 33-year-old whose reflexes are already gone because he's fat, and overweight.

Well I’m glad KK moved on from a 33 year old Babar Azam who’s mental ability to think is gone too

By all means, have Haider open. I'm glad that he is finally getting the chance to be at the top of the order. However, I cannot cope with the fact that a team is willing to play his as a platinum player. At best, he is a gold player based on the results he has put up.

Babar is at least 33. Have you seen his facial features? Iftikhar is 32 apparently

No offense bro, but have you been eating surf too? Or do you need a new pair of glasses?

Kohli is 34. Shan Masood is 33. Babar is probably exactly as old as he says he is or at most a year older.

Man Haider Ali is gonna be working under Waseem Akram and the guy is very strict and gets angry. Dont think he would last there

Jason Roy, James Vince, Daniel Sams, Theekhshana, Janneman Malan in Diamond.

Miller, Finch, Grandhomme, Neesham, Mujeeb, Rassie, Shakib, Hasaranga in Platinum

This has been the best pool list in PSL since 2019. 2020 and 2021 were the worst ones.

Was expecting the likes of Russell, Pollard, Narine, Boult in as well.

I am not a big fan of draft method. Auction or seperate signings or wildcard entries are better and gives all players especially the big ones to get a chance. Draft picks reduces it because of the limit.

Karachi Kings is already the least liked team for next PSL and draft hasn't even begun yet. :cobra

Would love for IU to hire Dale Steyn as a mentor or coach. That guy has a fantastic eye for talent. He was the one who asked for Nortje to be selected. Did some good work with Umran as well.

de Grandhomme, Finch, Shakib, Mujeeb, Hasaranga, Nabi...all players worth buying.

Wouldn't spend too much money on English, West Indian and South African first team players. Considering they will all have availability issues.

Man Haider Ali is gonna be working under Waseem Akram and the guy is very strict and gets angry. Dont think he would last there

What's more concerning is the influence of the snakes in the dressing room.

Man Haider Ali is gonna be working under Waseem Akram and the guy is very strict and gets angry. Dont think he would last there

Peter Moores is the head coach of KK who is a data specialist coach. Wasim is the president of KK.

Seeing Haider in Platinum is funny.

I agree on Roy’s form being underwhelming and that he can’t be the main guy right now, for any team. I think we are finally beginning to see an identity around PSL teams, even wrt foreign players. Just like a Kieron Pollard is MI through and through, similarly Roy is becoming similar for QG. I also believe that the lad has had a complete mare regarding his mental health in recent times and the PSL may finally be his chance to reignite his career ( similar to how the likes of Dawson have done).

I agree on others being able to pick Saim in an open draft. However, this is what I mean when I say that the draft is slightly skewed in that players can give verbal agreements to specific owners to want to play for them (see Hasan Ali wanting to go to ISLU only a few years ago). Similarly, players can tell prospective teams to not pick them as they’ll only play for a certain team. Again, I have no proof that this actually happens, but just reading the tea leaves here. Also you have to remember, they can always use their wildcard and pick Saim in the silver category, thereby gazumping other teams who were expecting to pick Saim in the emerging category. Granted, other teams can do the same.

Again, unfortunately I agree on Finch, but if they intend to pick Saim, then the smart pick is to go for Miller. The emerging player is the most important part of your team strategically, so it’s important to have a contributing one. Picking Saim means you’ve locked up an opener spot for 2 years atleast.
