T20 has evolved over the years and now has mostly become a high-scoring heist. All around the world, the pitches for T20s are made flat to promote high-scoring matches. The concluded series between Pakistan and England was no different.

Firstly in the batting, Pakistan had the opportunity to bat twice in the series. In the 2nd T20, Hafeez played a splendid knock after a good start provided by Babar and Fakhar. Fakhar should be disappointed that he could played a Hafeez type knock by playing more deliveries whereas Babar would know that he played an okayish innings due to the under-par strike rate. It was under-par due to the pitch which required 150+ strike rate from set batsmen. Neverthless, the area of real concern in batting were the end overs where Malik and Iftikhar could not provide the impetus that could have lead to a score of 200+.

In the 3rd T20, the exciting young prospect, Haider Ali debuted in place of Iftikhar. After Fakhar faulted in the second over, Haider Ali was sent to the crease which was an appreciable move by Babar and team management. It has to be remembered that Hafeez scored well at No. 3 in the previous match. Neverthless, Haider showed his class by hitting a six of just the 2nd ball in his T20 career. Soon after, Babar lost his wicket which brought Hafeez to the crease. Hafeez took his time while Haider was in the mood to blast the bowlers. But once Adil Rashid came into the attack, Hafeez thrashed him for fours and sixes and brought Pakistan into the game.

Haider became the first Pakistani to score a T20 fifty on debut. The best thing about his batting was his natural game on display. The aggressive intent, high bat swing speed and good understanding of the game brought success to Haider. After the dismissal of Haider, Hafeez took the responsibility and lead Pakistan to 190. Shadab scored an okayish 15 of 11. However, the important thing to see was that Shadab and Imad played above Malik and Sarfraz.

In the current era of T20 cricket, every batsman should have the ability to play with 150+ strike rate and be effective. The promotion of Shadab and Imad clearly sent the signal that Malik and Sarfraz both do not have the capability to do so. In the previous match, Rizwan was also in a similar situation. Therefore, one has to question the requirement of the said players in T20 cricket if majority of the pitches will be flat all over the world. Does Pakistan really need a wicket-keeper batsman who can play at a high strike rate? If Khushdil was in the team, had Shadab and Imad been promoted above him?

In the batting, I personally feel neither Sarfraz nor Rizwan should be in the team. In the same way, Malik also has no place in the team. Khushdil can easily replace Malik. If we really do not believe that there is a keeper who bats at 150+ strike rate then do we really need a batsman or we need a good wicket keeper. In the current form, Sarfraz is a better T20 batsman with a potential of 120sh strike rate which is not good enough down the order. In the same way, Rizwan will also not be good enough down the order. However, Rizwan is an excellent keeper. Therefore, the ideal scenario would have a better batsman wicket keeper than Sarfraz or Rizwan. However, if it is really between Rizwan or Sarfraz, Rizwan would be better due to his wicket keeping. Both won't be really handy in high scoring games in the batting.

Therefore my ideal batting lineup looking at the World cup will be.

Babar
Fakhar
Haider
Hafeez
Khushdil
Wicket keeper (Bats at 150+ strike rate)
Shadab
Imad

T20 is the only format in which Fakhar should play. We should have an eye on Sharjeel as his replacement if he keeps on underperforming. However, the crux is that every batsman should have the ability to hit big and at a high strike rate for T20 cricket.

My Squad would look something like this for the 2021 t20 World Cup in India. I have a squad of 20 who can be shuffled for the next few series before t20wc and a 15 that could do really well in Indian conditions.

Fakhar/Sharjeel
Babar
Haider
Hafeez
Khusdil/Malik //Ifthikar
Rohail/Rizwan //Sarfraz
Imad/ //Yamin/Umer khan
Shadab
Amir
Wahab/Rauf
Shaheen //Naseem

Fakhar needs to find his form quick or Sharjeel should come in as a hard hitting opener.
Babar can anchor the innings while Haider & Hafeez can bring power and stability to the middle order.
At 5 I’d prefer if Pakistan play Khusdil but since they love ‘experience’ and it’s in India where Malik has done well I don’t mind him playing as long as he’s performing. (Don’t think T20s is ifthikars game).
At 6 they really need to think ahead and bring an aggressive WK like Rohail Nazir. Rizwan and Sarfraz can’t play big shots later on in the innings and have a s/r of 120 which isn’t good enough and can cost the team crucial runs.
Since it’s in India, Imad should play but I’d still have a pace bowling all rounder like Yamin who can be handy with bat and ball. Idk why he gets ignored and they stuck with someone like Faheem for so long. Shadab and Amir need to work on consistency. Some days they bowl fine but other days they look ordinary.
It’s a tough one between Wahab and Rauf, whoever’s In better form should play. I’m tempted to go with Rauf cause he’s right handed but Wahab showed that he can be a match winner in crucial situations.
Shaheen would be my number 11 who also needs to work a bit on consistency. Naseem looks too raw and should play more first class cricket but it will be unfair if he’s dropped completely into the wilderness.

Captaincy is another issue. Babar doesn’t look like a natural captain and i don’t think he will lead well because of his quiet personality, at a big stage like the World Cup this might impact his batting. He needs to be more bold and rely on himself rather than letting Misbah and co transfer their defensive mindset on to him. I personally feel if Pakistan want a chance of winning in India they need Babar the batsman and hand over the captaincy to Hafeez who can lead the team for his last WC. He’s the most experienced and sharpest player in the team who understands the game well and can lead from the front. Or they need to groom Imad as captain who looks like a natural leader. Don’t think misbah will groom Imad so the captaincy burden needs to be taken off Babar unless he can prove us wrong within the next few series. We don’t need a yes man as captain who lets ppl like Rauf walk all over them and disrespect them like that even after the victory. Would anywhere dare to behave like that with Kohli? Atleast with Hafeez or Imad it would be them leading the show cause captaining Pakistan isn’t an easy job and I don’t think Babar is ready.

Haider was a great find. Wahab also showed he still has it in him.

These are the two main findings.

So it's interesting what you've all said.

So keeping in mind that the next T20 WC is in India and that the squad size will be 15 players, this is how I see it.

The squad will be need 4 spinners atleast, including 3 specialists and 1 part time spinner
The squad will need 5 fast bowlers atleast, including 1 bowling allrounder
The squad will need 2 keepers, with the back up keeper primarily being a batsmen
The squad will need 7 batsmen atleast

That equals 18 players, so three of your batsmen will have to do dual roles, i.e. Fast bowling allrounder, Batsmen who can bowl spin and a backup keeper.

The tactics:

Powerplay bowling: Currently (and since too long) Pakistan have used a tactic of bowling their spinner in the powerplay. Initially it used to be Hafeez but in the last 6 years it's been Imad. Teams are now actively targeting Imad in the Powerplay and Pakistan need to have an alternative regarding how they open they're bowling i.e. with two quicks etc. Who else will bowl in the power play.

Batting Order and Squad Composition: The squad of 7 batsmen has to include a maximum of 2 accumulators, whilst including 5 players who can have between a 150-200% strike rate. The squad also requires a finisher who doesn't strike below 200

Keeping situation: The team needs a batsmen who keeps. We can't have a Umar Akmal/Rahul Dravid type situation, but perhaps a better keeper may exist in the domestics

Fast bowling mix - The squad needs 2 specialist new ball bowlers, one of which who can also bowl in the death overs. The squad also requires a separate old ball bowler who is a death over specialist.

Spin bowling mix - The squad needs ideally two wrist spinners. Failing this, the squad require one wrist spinner and a second genuine mystery/beguiling wicket taking spinner. The third and fourth spinners can be economical types

So we have domestic T20 competitions and PSL. Kamran Akmal is always one of the top performers if not the best performer. He deserves a go. Umar Akmal deserved a place as well but he has other issues right now.

The batting assessment:

Current batting options:

The squad currently has Babar, Hafeez, Malik, Sarfaraz and Rizwan. That's far, far, far too many accumulators. Ifti similarly is not a 'go-from-ball-one' smasher

The openers in the squad include Babar, Fakhar and Haider.

The finisher's role has been alloted to either Ifti or Khushdil.

Suggested changes:

The accumulators in the squad should be Babar and at a stretch, Hafeez, due to his bowling contribution. Malik does not merit a place in the squad not because of his performances but because there are too many others like him in the squad.

The Openers: The openers to accommodate Babar are currently Fakhar, plus Sharjeel will also be mentioned. Other options are Imam (who absolutely is not a T20 player at the highest level, like Pujara isn't), Kamran Akmal (A disruptive voice in the dressing room, pseudo captain who is not the best keeper. His reactions at the highest level are also in question. One hopes that Zeeshan Malik and Abdullah Shafique can finally shine in the upcoming t20 tournament to be given a chance for PCT. Thus two of Fakhar/Sharjeel/Kamran/new find make the squad.

The middle order:
Haider and Hafeez are mainstays for the t20 WC. Going forward, two more names at 5, who can also interchange as finishers, need to be considered. Malik/Ifti are the current incumbents. Domestically, the number 5 spot is quite barren and this is where the coaching team needs to try new things
Middle order dashers domestically (prospectively) are Saif Badar and Mohammed Haris (U19 WK). Sharjeel may well become the standard no.5 for Pakistan and Imad Wasim can also play this role. A leftfield choice would be to play Fakhar at 5. He's somebody who can attack from the get go

The finisher role: Khushdil Shah and Ifti are the current incumbents. The only possible choices domestically are Mohammed Haris or Zeeshan Ashraf. Will be interesting to see if Razzaq or Mohammed Wasim can develop finishers for KPK and Northern this season respectively. Alternatively, can Hassan Ali mould himself into this finisher's role?

If I was the management I'd use the Zimbabwe tour to test out some youngsters for example in the keeping I belive rohail nazir and mohammed harris should be given ago

In the batting department haider ali and khushdil shah

The spinning department umer khan should be given a go

My team in the 21 world cup in india would be

Fakhar
Babar
Haider
Hafeez
Mohammed harris
Khushdil
Shadab
Imad
Shaheen
Wahab
Rauf

Umer khan
Fahim ashraf
Husnain
Sharjeel
Iftikhar
Rohail nazir .

I would not include malik in the squad iftikhar is a better finisher and also bowls a few overs

I would also include umer khan as a specialist back up spinner

I would also include muhammad Harris in terms of ball striking hes very good but am not to sure how good of a keeper he is thou but heard hes okag
