Rise of Empires: Ottoman | Netflix

Started seeing it yesterday, currently on episode 3. The series is good so far. Not bad from Netflix, they’re clearly trying to attract ME audience since Turkish dramas are very popular over there.

I don;t watch much Netflix, but this series I watched whole series over one weekend, wonderful, the best serial I watch in a long time.

My only problem with the show is it’s ending. They could’ve added a few more episodes on how Sultan Mehmet ruled Constantinople. I would’ve loved to see a bit more of him in peacetime.

Looks interesting planning to watch it. I wonder if there are any plans to make a TV series on the life of Saladin? The movie was a big success with some very powerful dialogues

Saw first episode.

The conquest of Constantinople was inextricably linked to Islam but atleast first episode has little or any reference to Islam

It’s interesting though as I was in Turkey only few months ago

1453; rarely mentioned in the West but the most important year in the millennium along with 1492.

I just finished it yesterday, have to say it was a pretty good series. Probably the best I have seen in the last one year.

One thing to note, it still glorified the Byzantine's defense and the Christian forces. I am not a historian, but I love history and I won't contradict what exactly happened back then. Just mentioning that they showed it was a very difficult victory for the Ottomans and they almost left and went home.

I haven't seen the series yet but it is accurate to portray the victory as very difficult for the Ottoman since it actually was.

The Byzantines were repelling every attack launched by the Ottomans and the casualties were heavy every assault. Even during the final all-out assault the Ottomans were being repelled, even when the Elite Janissaries were deployed. The tipping point was when the Byzantine general was wounded and had to withdraw devastating the morale and finally allow the Ottomans to overwhelm the defenses.

Here's a nice little video too summarizing the events, even leading up to the siege. As a history buff this channel makes very well detailed videos, also showing tactics, strategy etc.

Not sure about the Ottomans giving up but one of the Viziers kept arguing for Mehmet to lift the siege but the Sultan was determined to conquer the city.....unsurprisingly that particular Vizier end up being executed right after the victory lol.

I love the channel you just shared, i was already subscribed to it.
Yes, the grand pasha was executed in the end and that's what was shown too. Thing is, Mehmed was told by his step mother and others to study his ancestors failure, which he did. He studied it well enough to just keep on attacking the city even during losses. It eventually led to victory. There were quite some out of the box thinking, like getting into the golden horn by land. Eventually it did lead them to victory.
Thanks for the share, really appreciate it.

Kings & Generals does a great job on modern wars/battles showcased as well also worth a watch. Its embarrassing when you watch the Israeli/Arab wars :))

Two episodes in, and loving it. I'm really happy they've kept it quite historically accurate too!

Are you alluding to the kingdom of heaven movie or the one on Saladin's life from 1963 which was incredible, KOH is great but let down by the decision to not focus entirely on Saladin. There is a very old TV series on Saladin but hard to find it in English and you probably wont like the production value either. But I agree we need either a TV show or movie in this era on his life, far more important and intriguing then the Ottomans imo

My family is addicted to Ertugal

I watched the first episode yesterday, it was a bit cheesy tbh but I was surprised by the production, clearly they have spent a decent amount on it and the action was ok for the most part, may get better as the season grows. I needed an alternative after 1 more episode left for Vikings this year which is in a league of its own concerning this genre

I was talking about kingdom of heaven and i agree Saladin part is very limited in the movie but there are some incredible scenes. My favorite one is

"I am not those men. I am Salahudin. [with more emphasis] Sala-hu-din!"

I will try to find that old series i don't mind production quality if the script and acting is strong.

Really liked it, well made and looks to be historically accurate...Details of events were impressive, it’s more of a documentary, maybe some of things are exaggerated but probably largely true, I am no expert to be sure on those events...

I am impressed by Mehmet-2 resilience and entrepreneurship, that too at age of 21, unbelievable!!

Now I want to go back to Turkey and explore more!!

one of the better docu/dramas ive seen, portrays the history well without delving into tangential matters, and portrays both parties in a very fair light.

All weekend , I was watching this series and reading Ottoman's history also, learnt a lot and found it so interesting and correct too, looking forward to my trip to Turkey to watch those places.
