Indian cricketer, who has been tested for Covid-19 positive ahead of their five-match Test series against England, is wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.

The Test series against England is scheduled from August 4.

Pant was at the Wembley Stadium to watch England’s Round of 16 clash against Germany on June 30.

As per the reports, Pant is not experiencing any serious symptoms. However, he won't be be travelling to Durham, where the Indian team is scheduled to assemble on Thursday to start preparing for their three-day warm-up game against a County Championship XI team, starting from July 20.

Indian cricketers were on a 20-day break following their eight-wicket loss against New Zealand in the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Players were spotted at Wimbledon and Euros during the break.

Jay Shah, secretary of BCCI, had warned the cricketers not to go out as the Delta variant was rampant in the UK. In his letter, Jay Shah had also asked the players not to go out because vaccination does not provide immunity.

Last week before the first ODI against Pakistan, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that seven team members, including three players and four staff members, tested positive for Covid-19.

The development forced an overhaul of the England ODI squad, with Ben Stokes being appointed the captain of the team.

In his statement, ECB chief executive Tom Harrison mentioned the Delta variant of the virus without revealing if the squad members were affected by it.“We have been mindful that the emergence of the Delta variant, along with our move away from the stringent enforcement of biosecure environments, could increase the chances of an outbreak. We made a strategic choice to try to adapt protocols, in order to support the overall wellbeing of our players and management staff who have spent much of the last 14 months living in very restricted conditions,” Harrison had said.India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been tested positive for Coronavirus ahead of their five-match Test series against England, starting from August 4. Afaik it has been 10 days since he tested positive and is in quarantine. He is expected to be tested again in a few days and join the team.

Think issue not whether he will be fine or not (which he will be) - bigger issue is that he ignored BCCI advice.

Also same for Ravi Shastri who went to Wimbledon.

Having said all that, if the whole of UK is going into lalaland soon in terms of COVID precautions - why are they so bothered about players?

The whole of London was in full party mode for over a month. 1000s and 1000s of people outside. I really hope UK goes ahead with stopping all the restrictions next week.

About time we move on.

Actually the BCCI mail came after he attended the Euro game and Shastri the Wimbledon.

Problem is that both of them were ok according to the rules prevalent in UK. BCCI could have given them a smaller break i believe, 20 days were too many.

The issue is not about rules, but common sense. Something that this team seems to be lacking, under an alcoholic coach, & a manchild captain.

But again, when you have a cult following which can justify everything, than I guess such behavior is expected.

Did you guys see the Euro cup final ? It was a packed stadium and no one bar the stadium security where earning a mask and not to mention people watching the game in bars/pubs or flocked outside the stadium.

While can’t really blame Pant here for not wearing a mask when there is no mandate, the blame lies on Indian TM as well as ECB for not having stronger protocols ahead of a high profile series.

On a serious note, hope everyone recovers.

.

Sorry but it is completely Pant's fault.

He is not a child anymore. He should have known that going to a crowded football event without a mask will have its consequences. One doesn't need a mandate or a bunch of rules to figure that out. It's simple commonsense, given the times we live in.

It's the typical 'Kuch nahin hoga yaar' attitude that is very common in desis. Highly irresponsible!

Pant deserves to be banned from the rest of the series and put on a plane back to India.

He'll be fine in time. Most people are recovering good and well after a few days in quarantine. Many in my family who had it have made a total recovery. The way the world media is obsessed with Covid 19 you'd think there is nothing else going on in the world. Yeah wear a mask and all when outdoors, precaution is better then cure.

After Rishabh Pant, a support staff member of Team India in England has also tested positive for Covid-19. Three other coaching assistants have been quarantined because of this development.

Almost 99% recover.
What does a positive test say? Nothing at all.

Pant is on a national duty and is going to play for India lol. Those other people watching the match in the stadium weren't going to play for their countries. Some people really have different set of rules for different players. :inti

Pretty sure there are others also because Pant would have interacted and spent time with other players as well. These guys will never learn. :inti

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has tested positive for Covid-19.

Pant, 23, will not travel to Durham, where the team will go in a bio-bubble before the five-match Test series with England starting on 4 August.

His manager told BBC Sport the player has been "quarantining for the past week and is asymptomatic, so things are fine".

The India players have remained in the UK after the World Test Championship Final defeat by New Zealand last month.

They were given a 20-day break before joining back together.

The news came amid reports that the secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, had sent an email to the 23-member team in the UK warning it about rising Covid-19 cases in the country.

Reports said Shah had told the players to "avoid" crowded places, and going to tennis Grand Slam Wimbledon and football's European Championship, which recently concluded in the UK.

Pant shared pictures on social media attending the last-16 Euro 2020 match between England and Germany at Wembley on 29 June.

Rajiv Shukla BCCI vice-president earlier told PTI: "One player has tested positive but he has been in isolation for the last eight days. He was not staying in any hotel with the team, so no other player has been affected."

Earlier this month England named an inexperienced 18-man replacement squad for their ODI series with Pakistan after three players and four staff members tested positive for Covid-19.

In May, the Indian Premier League (IPL), the the richest franchise tournament in world cricket, was suspended after an increase in coronavirus cases among players

Team India off to Durham; Two members test positive

Wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant nears completion of his self-quarantine period while training assistant/net bowler Dayanand Garani has tested positive for COVID-19.

Team India (Senior Men) were on a three-week break after the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship final held in Southampton against New Zealand.

Pant, who had not stayed in the team hotel during the break period, tested positive on 8th July. He is asymptomatic and currently undergoing self-isolation at the place where he reported positive. He is being closely monitored by the BCCI Medical Team and is on his way to recovery. He will be able to join the squad in Durham after returning two negative RT-PCR tests.

The BCCI Medical Team have identified B. Arun, Bowling Coach, Wriddhiman Saha and Abhimanyu Easwaran as close contacts of Garani, who was in the team hotel when he tested positive following RT-PCR tests on 14th July. The four personnel will undergo 10-day isolation and will remain in their respective rooms in the team hotel in London.

The entire Indian contingent including travelling family members and caretakers were administered with the second dose of covid vaccine earlier this month in London. To mitigate any further risks, the Indian contingent is taking the Lateral Flow Test on a daily basis.

Team India will begin their preparations for the upcoming five-match Test series against England with a three-day warm-up game at Emirates Riverside against County XI starting on Tuesday.

life goes on, its got to a stage where we need to start living with covid. 47% of all people testing positive in the UK are vaccinated, if people are still going to be forced home or into lockdown then what exactly was the point of vaccinating in the first place?

If Pant won't be available for first test, then DK isn't too far from there. Might well play him in England series. He did played last time.

I'm just surprised that Pakistan hasn't had any positive cases so far.

At the moment the UK is at a crossroads re Covid - dangerous times.

This shows how UK has mismanaged the entire covid scenario. 60k people allowed in Wembley, wearing masks is not mandatory, packed pubs etc shows gross mismanagement of the govt. BBC was very quick to share the picture of crowd gathering in Kumbh Mela but wont report mass gatherings of Wembley or Leicester Square etc during Euros. Has ECB yet revealed who are those UK players that contacted covid? Or how they breached the bio bubble in first place?

Pant did nothing wrong...he just followed the law of the land set up by govt. Hold British govt responsible for this gross mismanagement of covid.

BCCI released all players for 3 weeks vacation. Pant was on a vacation and following the laws of UK. He isn't at fault here.

What kuch nahi hoga atitude? Does UK mandate use of masks? Or does the UK government also has desi irresponsible attitude?

Boris is looking at 2 things- death rates and Hospitalisation. At the moment both are under control but it will become worse in the next few weeks. Its been chaos at school this week.

Agree mate...I am all for freedom. But the vibe this govt is giving as if the pandemic is over which is not the case. Scientists warning a huge spike when everything opens on July 19th. Just hope for the best.

Love how some indian posters are defending pant, their jingoism never disappoints.

True and it's an experiment that could go totally pear shaped.

CI president Sourav Ganguly will be a busy man in the upcoming months. Not that he had some free-time but with the organisation of back-to-back high profile events that will see involvement of players from across the globe during coronvirus pandemic is quite a challenge. In mid of September, the second leg of IPL 2021 will resume in UAE and just a couple of days after it concludes, the T20 World Cup will get underway.

Even though the world cup has been shifted outside India, BCCI continues to be the official host and thus needs to ensure everything is in order well in advance.

News18 caught up with Ganguly for a quick chat,

Excerpts

You went to UAE earlier (for IPL 2020) but Oman (for T20 World Cup qualifiers) is in the picture for the first time. Will you confer with ICC?

Yes. UAE, Oman, ICC, Emirates Cricket Board, with everyone.

India is the host country. Will the cricket grounds be rented?

The same system as the IPL. BCCI will be the host.

Besides World Cup, there is IPL too. Will there be discussions about IPL as well?

Yeah, absolutely.

India are going to play a long five-match Test series against England. They lost the ICC Test Championship final recently. As a former captain, what is your prediction?

It can’t be predicted. They (India) will play good cricket. Just one single match can’t decide whether they are bad or good. It’s a long series, so there will be chances for both the teams to equalise.

With Shubman Gill ruled out due to injury, who do you think will open for India during the Tests?

I don’t interfere in all these matters. Team Management will decide this.

Rishabh Pant has tested positive for Covid. This happened when the India squad was vacationing. Many of them were pictured roaming around without wearing masks. Do you think they should have been more careful?

We have seen Euro Championship and Wimbledon in England. Rules have changed (with crowd being allowed inside venues). They were on leave and it’s physically impossible to wear mask all the time.

Ok they were following UK rules which has no mandates for mask but why are these fools not vaccinated yet. Roaming without vaccination is stupidity

Even before the three-week break of the Indian cricketers had started post the WTC final, many experts had speculated that the players might be in danger of catching Covid-19. And this is exactly what has happened now. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant had tested positive and is in isolation, and so is Wriddhiman Saha.

Although it is impossible to track the source of the infection, it is believed that a recent visit to a dentist could be the place where Pant got infected. Now the keeper has been in quarantine for the last eight days after testing positive on July 8. As per a report in Times of India, Pant had visited the dentist on July 5 and 6.

Meanwhile, the entire contingent and the family members of the players were given the second dose of the Covid vaccine in London. “Pant had gone to a dentist on July 5 and 6, and could have picked the virus from the clinic. On July 7, he had been vaccinated," a source told TOI.

Apart from that Pant had gone to the Wembley Stadium on June 29 to watch England vs Germany in Euro 2020 match. Speaking over the matter, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said, “Pant, who had not stayed in the team hotel during the break period, tested positive on July 8. He is asymptomatic and currently undergoing self-isolation at the place where he reported positive. He is being closely monitored by the BCCI medical team and is on his way to recovery. He will be able to join the squad in Durham after returning two negative RT-PCR tests."

Sourav Ganguly has also spoken on the matter. He said it is impossible to wear a mask at all times. “We have seen Euro Championship and Wimbledon in England. Rules have changed (with crowd being allowed inside venues). They were on leave and it’s physically impossible to wear mask all the time."

Wearing mask works, if at all, when everyone is doing it. Wearing it by yourself when nobody else is compliant makes it useless.

Aren’t these guys fully vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna doses?
Am I missing something or they are falling in that 5% chance of getting Covid (with mild symptoms) even after being fully vaccinated? Are they getting the Delta version?
They got Indian vaccine which doesn’t work ?
What exactly is the truth?

First dose was done in India, I am not sure about second dose,
They supposed to vaccinate in UK.

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has completed his isolation period of 10 days and is set to undergo COVID-19 and cardiac tests on Monday before he joins the team’s bio bubble. Pant had tested positive for COVID-19 during the team’s three-week break and is currently at a relative’s place in London.

“Pant is expected to undergo COVID-19 related tests today and once the results are out and he tests negative, he can go ahead and join the squad in Durham," ANI quoted a source as saying.

With India playing a select County XI in a first-class warm-up match starting on Tuesday (July 20), KL Rahul will keep wickets as Pant and Wriddhiman Saha are not with the squad. Saha too is in isolation as he was deemed a close contact to throwdown specialist Dayanand Garani, who too tested positive. Bowling coach Bharat Arun and reserve opener Abhimanyu Easwaran are the others in isolation.

Pant was seen attending a Euro championship match last month and had posted pictures on his social media accounts.

He underwent a test after experiencing low grade fever.

Jay Shah, BCCI secretary, had e-mailed the players to “avoid" crowded places as Covishield, the vaccine which has been given to the team, only provides protection, not full immunity against the virus.

Shah’s letter had specifically stated that players should avoid going to the Wimbledon and Euro Championships, both of which recently concluded there.

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal will be India’s opener in the warm up match along with Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill is ruled out of the series with shin splints.

There needs to be a new policy regarding touring players in countries like England. I'm not saying that you lock them up in bubbles throughout the tour, which was the case during the early days of the pandemic. But surely openly roaming around in very public places like stadiums (that too without masks) is not particularly rational thinking.

Rishabh Pant joins Team India camp in Durham after recovering from delta variant of Covid-19

Hard-hitting wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has finally joined the Team India squad in Durham after successfully recovering from the dreaded Covid-19 virus. Pant had tested positive on July 8 after the Indian cricket team were on a 3-week sabbatical, post the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The apex body of Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a picture of the playful youngster, sporting a mask and an orange full-shirt, across social media. The caption read, “Hello RishaBhPant17, great to have you back #TeamIndia”.

Rishabh Pant was seen watching one of the Euro matches along with his friends when the break was going on for the Indian players. Post testing positive for Covid-19, Rishabh Pant was isolating at a friend’s house. He, therefore, did not travel with the team to Durham before and had to miss out on the 3-day practice Test match against the Select County XI outfit.

However, with Rishabh Pant being fully recovered, he is all set to don the wicketkeeper’s gloves in the 1st Test of the 5-match Test series versus England, starting on the 4th of August. India have lost the WTC final to New Zealand and would be vying for a fresh start in the WTC cycle.

Rishabh Pant was also a part of the previous Test squad of Team India which toured in 2018. Though India had lost the series 1-4, there were plenty of positives and one of the biggest positives was the emergence of Rishabh Pant as an alternative to Wriddhiman Saha as an aggressive and swashbuckling keeper-batsman.

Notably, he had made his debut in that series. Since that terrific debut which saw him muster 207 runs in 4 matches, including a phenomenal 114 in the final Test match, Rishabh Pant has cemented his side in the Test squad. He has plundered a total of 1358 runs since the series and has been a key player of Team India in the Test arena.
