Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's first post-independence leader, has died at the age of 95.

He died after battling ill health, his family confirmed to the BBC.

Mr Mugabe was ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, ending his three-decade reign.

Zimbabwe's education secretary Fadzayi Mahere tweeted: "Rest In Peace, Robert Mugabe."

He was born on 21 February 1924, in what was then Rhodesia.

e was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial after criticising the government of Rhodesia in 1964.

Like Marshal Petain, he lived far too long. If he had passed away (or at least retired) in the early 80s, he would’ve been hailed as a great freedom fighter and statesman.

Proof positive that you shouldn’t overstay your welcome.

Reminds me of a certain Dark Knight quote

Wasn't he the most corrupt leader Zimbabwe had who ruined the entire nation? Looted billions of $$ and led his country to inflation never seen before in the world??

Think the quote being referred to is from the Batman film The Dark Knight, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Apt in this case.

No wonder I wasn’t aware of the quote, having never been interested in superhero movies. But an apt quote nonetheless.

Started off as a revolutionary hero, then wrecked his country.

His legacy aside, such as it is, my OCD compels me to be upset whenever someone passes away in their 90s: so close to that three figure mark, yet not close enough.

He was a hero who became a villain.

I don't know whether to feel happy or sad. He has done good things but also bad things.

A cruel tyrant who trashed public institutions, looted his country's wealth with his cronies and has the blood of THOUSANDS of civilians in Matabeleland on his hands.
