Will be unfair on the other teams unless he makes his own one-man team. Even then, he'd probably win easily. :yk2

We need a good football system in Pakistan.

I wanna see Pakistan competing in the FIFA WC atleast once in my lifetime. For that to happen we need a board that is efficient and doesn't have the same head for the last 10-15 years (Faisal Swaleh Hayat)

National footballers ecstatic over Ronaldinho’s visit

KARACHI:

“This is the biggest event in Pakistan’s sports history, it is way bigger than Pakistan Super League,” said an excited Kaleemullah. “It is Ronaldinho who is coming here.”

The Brazilian midfielder and Fifa Player of the Year 2004 and 2005 will be coming to Karachi to promote football with Leisure Leagues Pakistan. In a video released on the social media Ronaldinho can be seen holding the Pakistan flag and telling his fans, “I’m coming to Pakistan”.

The former RFC Barcelona and AC Milan player will be following in the footsteps of late boxing Legend Muhammad Ali who visited Karachi and Lahore in 1988 and 1989. And this will very well be the second most momentous visit to Pakistan by an international sports icon.

“It was one my fantasies that is about to become real,” Leisure League ambassador Kaleemullah told The Express Tribune. “But this is not just for Pakistanis; Ronaldinho is such a big name that the entire world will be looking at us because of it — it is an international event in fact. If Ronaldinho can come, then other big names in football will at least think about coming here too. It is more than football for Pakistan. It is a good sign for us; I feel everyone should support it. This will send out a great message to the world, that we are sports-loving, football-loving nation.”

The 24-year-old has been a part of Leisure League along with other national players including Hassan Bashir, Muhammad Adil, Saddam Hussain and women’s national team captain Hajra Khan. He was also a part of PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators as an ambassador, but he feels that for the first time in Pakistan, football will stage a bigger event than cricket.

“PSL is a positive step, a professional league, but certainly Ronaldinho’s visit and hopefully playing a match here is a far bigger deal,” said Kaleemullah. “There are few countries in the world that play cricket, but due to his visit, the people from 200 countries will be following us everywhere everyone knows Ronaldinho.

The Tulsa Roughnecks striker and former national captain said the experience of sharing a common field with Ronaldinho is amazing. “I’m a huge fan of Ronaldinho; just the thought that we’ll share the same field is exhilarating. There are so many memories of him playing the 2002 World Cup for Brazil and then with Barcelona. He will be inspiring all of us even more with his visit.”

Like Kaleemullah, national team midfielder Saadullah admitted that he has been a huge fan of Ronaldinho and believes the opportunity of having a legendary player in the country will only boost the game in Pakistan.

“It is just brilliant,” said Saaduallh . “We can say that his presence will change many things. We haven’t had any national or international tournaments because of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) controversy. There haven’t been any opportunities to motivate the youngsters to continue with football. But if this legend comes here, this can bring people to their feet. People would see that if someone like Ronaldinho can come to Pakistan, without any achievement by the country in football, then what potential is there.”

Saadullah highlighted the possibility of an exhibition match and said playing with or against Ronaldinho would be a surreal experience.

“Maybe we’ll be playing with him, or against him, it can be anything,” said Saadullah. “It was always my dream to meet him and it almost feels surreal to know that he is coming here.”

On the other hand, former FC Dordoi midfielder and national player Muhammad Adil said that the visit will be historic, given no big names in football ever came to Pakistan.

“I loved his game when he used to play for FC Barcelona, then he is such a talented futsal player too, I feel we’ll learn a lot from him,” said Adil. “This is historic because no other player of this stature came to Pakistan before and may be no one will ever come in the future.”

The feeling in Lyari

In Lyari, the heartland of football in Karachi, the youngsters and elders are excited as ever. According to Yaqoob Baloch, who has also worked for Sindh Football Association and managed the local players during the trials for provincial teams of U12, U14 and U16 teams, the effects of the news that Ronaldinho is coming has been far reaching.

“The youngsters here are just ecstatic,” said Baloch. “They idolize Ronaldinho. They don’t know him, they might not even meet him when he comes here but there is a sense of familiarity. They somehow relate to him and of course they just want a glimpse of him but it is all very overwhelming.”

The Leisure Leagues Country Consultant for Pakistan Shahrukh Sohail said that the legend will be coming but more details about his visit will be revealed in a press conference that will take place later this week.

Should be a good motivational factor. Plenty of hidden Footballing talent in Lyari and Balochistan.

Is there a large footy market in Pakistan outside of the urban elite?

Chelsea Legend John Terry to play friendly match in Pakistan

World renowned footballer John Terry had recently expressed his desire to one day visit Pakistan as part of the Leisure Leagues Pakistan’s (LLP) drive to develop football in the country.

The former Chelsea defender’s announcement had created a bit of confusion as it was unclear whether he would be a part of this year’s Ronaldinho & Friends exhibition or he planned to visit in future editions of the spectacle.

John Terry hopes to play showcase match in Pakistan
Any confusion has now been cleared as LLP has now confirmed that the 36-year-old will indeed be a part of Ronaldinho & Friends showcase match this year.

The announcement will be music to the ears of football fans in Pakistan as the Englishman, unlike the rest of LLP’s star-studded line-up, is still an active player at the top level and will purportedly be signing for Bournemouth once his Chelsea deal officially expires on June 30.

He becomes the eighth and probably the final superstar that LLP has roped in for the planned Ronaldinho & Friends exhibition match, with the other seven being Ronaldinho himself, Robert Pires, Luis Boa Morte, David James, Nicolas Anelka, George Boateng and Roberto Carlos.

“Bringing international players of this stature to Pakistan is a step towards building the country’s image globally,” said Mehmood Trunkwala, Chairman World Group. “At home, we want to empower our local talent and create a platform that gives every individual a chance to play football and groom their skills.”

He continued: “We want the youth of Pakistan to pursue their passion for football without any hardships and eventually showcase their talents internationally.”

Leisure Leagues Pakistan is a nationwide initiative of Trunkwala family to bring football in the country and create a platform for the local talent of Pakistan.

Amazing news.

Pakistan’s biggest footballing event

KARACHI: And then there were eight.

Captains Ronaldinho and John Terry, along with a superstar cast of Robert Pires, Roberto Carlos, Nicolas Anelka, David James, Luis Boa Morte and George Boateng.

These eight players will compete in a seven-a-side exhibition match on July 8 in Karachi and July 9 in Lahore, with three players apiece lining alongside Ronaldinho and Terry in either team.
“The national champions of the Leisure Leagues will get the unique chance of playing alongside these players,” said World Group Chief Operating Officer Ishaq Shah. “Each team can have a maximum of 10 players, with seven playing and three subs, so as many as 12 local players will rub shoulders with these eight legends of the beautiful game.”

The World Group is the company behind UK-based Leisure Leagues coming to Pakistan in the first place. “Leisure Leagues existed in three countries before; the UK, the US and the Republic of Ireland. We bought ownership for the remaining 203 countries, while also becoming a partner of the venture in the UK — where the league is headquartered. So Pakistan is the fourth country in the world where Leisure Leagues have been introduced. We plan to take it to the Middle East and Europe after this.”

The grand exhibition match will be Leisure Leagues’ magnum opus but Ishaq insisted the initiative has already seen more than expected interest from the country’s youth. “We have brought something truly unique to the football-loving youth of Pakistan and it’s great to see them respond in such enthusiastic fashion,” he said. “We provide them with grounds that are of an international standard, we provide them with footballs of the highest qualities as well as a trained referee, while also having complete first-aid kits at hand in case an injury takes place.”

The facilities provided may well be better than anything previously available to the general public, but it does come at a steep price. “Each 30-minute match costs Rs5,000. Since there are two teams of 10 players apiece, that makes it Rs250 a person.”

Most futsal and football grounds across the country can be booked at half the price for double that time.

Ishaq knows the price may not be everybody’s cup of tea but made no bones about this being a business venture first and foremost. “If you do something as non-profit or start depending on donations, then you can soon lose interest in it,” he said. “We want to make this a commercial success as well in order to ensure that it is a self-sustaining project. That way we can ensure the country and its football fans benefit from this in the long run.”

And football fans do have a lot to look forward to if World Group’s plans for Leisure Leagues do come to fruition. “This [the Ronaldinho and Friends exhibition match] is not a one-time thing,” promised World Group President Shahzeb Trunkwala, also present in the lavish meeting room at the company’s Pakistan headquarters in upscale DHA. “We will organise this every year. And from next year we will try to bring in current players rather than retired ones.”

Ishaq further revealed that talks have already begun to bring ‘the best’ players in the world to Pakistan for next year, but was naturally hesitant to divulge their names since talks are at a very early stage at the moment.

The event may be arguably the biggest footballing event in the country’s history but football players and fans have more to look forward to.

“There is a team that is currently playing in the United Soccer League, which will soon be a part of Major League Soccer — US’s major football league — that will be sending their scouts to Pakistan every year,” claimed Ishaq. “A trial camp will be set up, from which they will be choosing five players every year. These players will go train with them in the US and, if they impress there, can become professional footballers.”

Other initiatives are also on the way. “We have talked to all the provincial governments,” added Shahzeb. “We have asked them to provide us with land and we will build football grounds on them so that the youth of this country can indulge in healthy recreational activities. We have had a promising response from all of them, especially the Punjab government, which is willing to give us as many as 100 grounds if we guarantee to deliver on our promises.”

The two men did admit though that paying Rs250 is not possible for every young football enthusiast in the country. “Yes, we know that many can’t afford it, that is why there are some teams that play for free,” said Shahzeb. “Around 10 per cent of the teams play for free; who these teams will be is decided based purely on the basis of merit and need. And there is also going to be a league in Lyari that will take place completely free of charge since we know how much the people of that area love football.”

The format

With more than 100 teams already registered, the Leisure League format has teams playing across the year in several leagues.

“Since we know this isn’t a professional league, we realise that people have other commitments as well,” said Ishaq. “We know that these commitments are important to them and that they play football on the side. We therefore give them the opportunity to play whenever it is convenient for them. Want to play on Sundays only? You can do that. Have other commitments on Sunday and would rather play on Wednesday night? That is also possible. There is a lot of flexibility.”

The players though play in their separate cities and there are multiple leagues within major cities, which means crowning a national champion can be tricky business.

“The winners of all the different leagues play against each other in knockout games generated via a computer,” explained Ishaq. “The winner of that will be crowned the champions of that city or region. The champions of all regions then face off against each other in a similar format to crown the national champion.”

Other than getting a memorable chance of playing alongside the likes of Ronaldinho and Pires, the national champions will also be competing in the ‘Mini Football World Cup’, where they will be representing Pakistan.

“Leisure Leagues’ Pakistan national champion will play in the seven-a-side Mini Football World Cup in Dubai,” said Ishaq. “We will also be looking out for the future of these players and they will get either a scholarship or a job offer.”

Not an easy journey

Pakistan’s poor security situation means international sport in the country has come to a virtual standstill, so it comes as no surprise that the World Group had its work cut out in their bid to bring these players to Pakistan.

“Yes we did face a few problems convincing these players to come to Pakistan,” admitted Ishaq. “The unfortunate blast in Lahore took place just two days before we signed Ronaldinho, so it wasn’t easy to bring the players here. The army helped us a lot by offering to provide the players security for these matches.”

Doubts still hang over the participation of Chelsea legend Terry and Ronaldinho’s opposite captain, despite less than a week remaining to the games.

Concerns over security were not the only hurdle though. “Pakistan lacks even the most basic footballing infrastructure,” added Shahzeb. “The players wanted to send their agents so that they could look at the football grounds where they will be playing, but we didn’t have even a single ground in Karachi that we could show them. That is why we have had to have the Karachi game at a hockey ground.”

It has been hard work but the duo believe it is not them who are to be credited for pulling this off, but the man behind the vision. “None of this would have been possible without World Group Chairman Mehmood Trunkwala,” said Ishaq. “This is his vision and he is the one backing it.”

Many will write them off even before they have truly begun but Leisure Leagues is about to take one huge stride in their ambitious vision of turning cricket-mad Pakistan into football country. Ronaldinho and friends are coming to town.

He was instrumental in Barca's CL run in 2006.

And as for this tour its more of a PR exercise, that much is obvious to everyone.

Ryan Giggs coming to Pakistan

KARACHI: Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has been unveiled as the eighth and final player for the ‘Ronaldinho and Friends’ exhibition matches set to be played in Karachi and Lahore on July 8 and 9 respectively.

Per the original plan, former Chelsea captain John Terry was supposed to be the eighth superstar footballer set to visit Pakistan as part of Leisure Leagues Pakistan’s (LLP) twin friendly futsal games.

But his decision to prolong his football career and sign with Championship side Aston Villa likely forced him to change his plans. LLP then swiftly moved to rope in Welsh Giggs as replacement and captain of the side opposite to Ronaldinho’s.

John Terry hopes to play showcase match in Pakistan

With a whopping 34 trophies won during a 24-year footballing career, Giggs is the most decorated player in English football.

Giggs’ unveiling took place in England in the presence of Pakistan cricket’s beloved mascot Chaudhry Abdul Jalik aka Chacha Cricket.

LLP, a brainchild of World Group chief Mehmood Trunkwala and family, is a nationwide initiative to bring football to Pakistan and develop it at the grass-roots level.

Ronaldinho paid hefty amount for friendly matches in Pakistan

KARACHI: A deluge of former international football stars including Brazilians Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos along with Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs are being paid hefty amounts between $300,000 to $600,000 to play a couple of exhibition matches in Pakistan.
Along with them, some of the other big stars, who will be joining are Nicolas Anelka, Robert Pires, David James, George Boateng and Luis Boa Morte.
The players arrived in Karachi early Saturday morning on a private jet manned by the Pakistan military.
The two exhibition matches will be held in Karachi and Lahore under the auspices of the Leisure Leagues and World Group who claim they want to promote the sport in Pakistan.
According to a report in the "News International", the leisure league is paying Ronaldinho around $600,000 for the short visit while the other players are getting paid between $300,000 and $400,000.
Interestingly, the Pakistani players who will play alongside the international stars of the exhibition games, have complained that they have not been promised any payments from the organizers for the matches.

The organizers are selling tickets for the exhibition matches priced between 2000 and 30,000 Pakistani rupees.
Due to the devastating effects of terrorist attacks in Pakistan for the last one-decade, international teams and players have refrained from coming to Pakistan due to security concerns.

How are they going to play football in the July heatwave? Isn't this the hottest part of the summer in Pakistan? I would have thought temperatures will be hitting 35-40 degrees out there.

I'm sure the $600,000 will help immensely in seeing them get through it. For that amount I'd be the second coming of Alexis Sanchez

Also sounds more like a 5 a side kick about, with rolling substitutes. I doubt any of them will be going anywhere near 100%

Buddy, we'd be lucky if it were 35-40. It's been in the early and late 40's throughout Pakistan for the last month or so. Getting a little better now though.

Good opportunity for Pakistan to showcase that the land is safe for the Foreign sportsmen. Need a bit more PR work like Modiji.

Happy for Pakistani neighbors. Pro Wrestling and now Football, things are looking promising for you guys

Ronaldinho and friends play match in Karachi to boost Pakistan football

Brazil's Ronaldinho and a host of other former top footballers played an exhibition match in Pakistan on Saturday in a push to encourage people in the cricket-mad nation to take up the game.

Recently-retired Ronaldinho, who graced the Barcelona shirt in his prime, told reporters he wanted to “provide a good show” in the country, which is looking to entice more international stars as security improves.

“Thank you for all the admiration and treating me so well,” he said ahead of a match in Karachi, the first of two games in the trip.

The group dubbed “Ronaldinho and friends” also includes former Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs, former England goalkeeper David James, Dutch star George Boateng, former French players Robert Pires and Nicolas Anelka, and Portuguese player Luis Boa Morte.

Fans thronged to the Karachi stadium for the match late Saturday, with some travelling long distances for the rare chance to watch the footballing greats.

“I set off early this morning for Karachi,” Mohammad Yaqoob told AFP.

“I am here for the love of football and Ronaldinho.” Student Bilal Malik, who had come with a group of friends, said the Brazilian player was the star of the match, which also included homegrown players.

“His skills are mind-boggling. I want to see him play live before my eyes,” he said.

Pakistan boasted a top place in Asian football until the early 1970s, but a lack of government support and poor infrastructure helped push them to as low as 200th in the FIFA football rankings.

The game is growing in popularity once more, however, even in a country obsessed with cricket.

Ronaldinho, 37, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2005 as football's best player of the year and who was part of the 2002 World Cup winning team, said he is on a goodwill mission aimed at inducing youngsters to play the game.

Giggs, who retired in 2014, said he had heard the country had ample footballing talent and was home to a strong Manchester United fanbase.

“I will be happy if I inspire the youth, which is my job,” he said.

Pakistani organisers — Leisure League, a subsidiary of World Group — hope to both promote football, and signal that security has improved in the militancy-plagued country.

Officials want to welcome back international sport, which fled the country after an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009.

The Pakistani Army is deploying troops in and around hotels, airports and stadiums over the weekend, officials have said.

Arriving early Saturday by private jet, the players were hosted for lunch by army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who expressed hope that the visit would be the first of many.

“Pakistan is a peace loving country and we love sports,” he said.

The group will play a second exhibition match in Lahore on Sunday.

Thought Pakistan Was All About Cricket: Ronaldinho, Ryan Giggs

World famous footballers Ronaldinho and Ryan Giggs returned from Pakistan on Sunday night, expressing surprise at the "passion" for the game in a cricket-crazy country. The two footballers were in Pakistan on a two-day visit with five other international stars to play in two exhibition matches in Karachi and Lahore organised by the Leisure League.

"I think the security was excellent and we thought that Pakistan was only a cricket loving nation but after our visit we know they are as passionate about football as well," Ronaldinho said through an interpreter in Lahore.

While the security arrangements for the footballers stay in Pakistan and the matches were manned by the Pakistan Army but the other organisational aspects of the matches came in for some criticism on the social media.

Pakistani cricketers, Azhar Ali and Hasan Ali, who visited the Fortress Stadium Lahore for the second match on Sunday, said the arrangements could have been better.

Leisure League and World Group of Companies put on sale ticket ranging from 2000 to 30,000 Pakistani rupees with many people complaining they couldn't get into the stadium in Karachi and then in Lahore due to organisational hassles.

Pakistan has been deprived off major international sporting events ever since terrorists attacked the Sri Lanka cricket team bus in Lahore in 2009.

Different sports bodies have made attempts to invite international players and teams to Pakistan including the Pakistan Cricket Board but with marginal success.

Giggs, the former Manchester United great, too was surprised at the passion for football in Pakistan.

"I was surprised by the love and passion the Pakistani people have for football and I see they have interesting talent as well which only needs proper grooming and coaching," he said.

Former Brazil forward Ronaldinho has been released from prison and placed under house arrest in Paraguay.

The 2005 Ballon d'Or winner had spent time in jail along with his brother after being arrested on 6 March, accused of using fake passports.

The pair had previously been denied bail but posted $800,000 (£648,000) each and must now stay in a four-star hotel in Asuncion while awaiting trial.

Both Ronaldinho, 40, and his brother Roberto Assis deny any wrongdoing.

Their lawyer has called their imprisonment "arbitrary, abusive and illegal."

In allowing the pair to leave prison, Judge Gustavo Amarilla said the size of the bail paid was "significant" and would "guarantee they will not flee".

Ronaldinho had initially visited Paraguay to promote a book and a campaign for underprivileged children.

The 2002 World Cup winner played for clubs including Paris St-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan before retiring in 2015 after a spell at Brazilian side Fluminense.

Ronaldhinho won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and was named Fifpro World Player in 2005 and 2006.
