I think so far the coaching staff especially Mickey Arthur have done a fantastic job with the current set of players.
Mickey Arthur has been a big revelation and a god send for the team. I personally firmly believe that the process, methodology and work ethic is far more important for the team and the players than the actual results themselves but the fact that the results are coming is a wonderful sign.
The emphasis on fitness and an actual educated approach to fitness is clear. Mickey Arthur has laid down the rule book that everyone regardless of seniority and status from top to bottom has to reach those minimum standards otherwise they will find themselves on the bench and out of the team. The Umar Akmal saga is clearly testimony of this and the coaching staff has also made it clear to the players no one will play on the basis of promise and talent anymore. During the World Eleven series it was wonderfully refreshing to see that the vast majority of the players looking much leaner with veins and muscles showing, energetic in the field. It is clear that the players have subscribed to the team's exercise and diet plans.
As far as our ODI and T-20 teams are concerned, we are still missing an Abdul Razzaq, Lance Klusenar type hitter down the order who can blast away in the last 10. The team management is sending the power hitters to late and not early enough. Fahim Ashraf is one guy who can fulful this role but he is being wasted if he is being sent in with one ball to spare. I also think that the players at the top i.e. Shehzad, Babar Azam, Malik and co need to be bolder and start playing big shots much earlier than they actually do once they have got their eye in. These things are the main reason why we are posting scores of 160-170 when the par scores are atleast 200.
Having Amir and Junaid will obviously bolster the bowling attack in ODI and T-20 Cricket and if you include Hasan Ali that makes for a decent pair.
We will shortly find out where our test team truly stands now that there is no more Misbah and Younis and whether the likes of Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam can actually step it up remains to be seen, i am more concerned about the pace bowling, there is a dire need to find a Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar type demon from somewhere.
Sethi is doing the right thing by trying to PSLize our domestic cricket, that is the only way our domestic cricket can catch up to the rest of the world. The PCB by now should have some funds to spare to invest in local academies, pitches, better salaries for domestic cricketers e.t.c.
