Is Ross Taylor New Zealand's greatest ever Test batsman?

IMO - Ross Taylor is very underrated but has been a very good batsman for a while now. He had struggled for consistency but in the last 2/3 years he has been scoring a huge amount of runs in both Tests/ODI's.

I would actually rate him higher than Kane Willamson and Brendan McCullum and would arguably be considered one of NZ's greatest ever batsman.

IMO, it looks like this right now.

Crowe
Taylor
KW

KW is expected to finish his career as NZ's best.

Martin Crowe was better and Williamson will be over Taylor by the time they retire.

Lol no. That is Martin Crowe. Wasim Akram said he was the toughest batsman he ever bowled to.

Is Ross Taylor the best New Zealand Test batsman of all time?

He has scored runs in Asia as well. Scored a 200 against Australia in Australia. He averages 44 outside New Zealand (39.36 excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe).

Oh !!! Before we even dig into history, did you forget Kane Williamson. Or are we looking at longevity records here.

Good player, but Crowe and Williamson are much superior batsmen.

No.

It's Martin Crowe and Kane will surpass him too.

14 Test Hundreds at the age of 26 at an Average of 51.

Martin Crowe was the 2nd best batsman behind Viv in the 80's. He was a brilliant player whose record doesn't reflect how brilliant he was.

He was potentially the best of the AB, Amla generation

Crowe is a great test batsmen.

Williamson is a potential ATG test batsmen.

Taylor is just a very good test batsmen who at times got overshadowed even by Bmac in test format.

Your probably haven't heard of him, but Martin Crowe - NZ's highest run scorer in Tests is the best.

In terms of quality, KW is already NZ's finest; just needs to maintain his performance for another 30-40 Tests and he'll be his country's best batsman ever.

Even if he doesn't maintain his form for the next 2-3 years, eventually over the course of his career he will become the best.

Heard of Martin Crowe - knew he was a good batsman and scored NZ highest individual score at 299 before McCullum's 302.

Never saw him play but don't think he was an ATG.

Ross Taylor has pretty good stats in both Tests and ODI's so could make a case for him.

Might not be an ATG but neither is Taylor, but still is NZ's best.

Also ODIs don't come into the discussion when it's only Tests we're talking about.

Another underrated NZ batsman was Glenn Turner.

Very poor thread to be fair...

He had a nightmare of the series this time here in India in both tests and Odis and then cost a match by dropping a catch too.

never saw Martin Crowe bat, but his average in an era where many top batsmen averaged 40, is excellent.

But I think Kane Williamson is definitely already a better batsman than Ross Taylor ever was.

Although that judgement is not based on stats, the stats also reflect the gulf as Williamson has 14 hundreds, compared to Taylor's 15, in about 25 fewer matches.

In two years, Williamson will have the most hundreds of any NZ batsman, and he will have done it in record time for a New Zealander.

Kane Williamson will be NZ's greatest ever test batsman.

Bump!

Ross Taylor showing again why he is one of the world's best - borderline ATG and definitely a NZ great already in ODI's and Tests.

Just lacks consistency to be truly elite.

A very dangerous bat when gets going in ANY format of cricket. He may give chances early in the inning but once settled, hard to control the scoreboard. He can graft runs and hit big shots. There are not many better middle order batsmen than him around.

I remember watching 19-year-old Crowe get 30 against Willis and Botham. Not that many runs, but you could tell he was going to be world class.

Very good batsmen in all formats but behind Crowe and Williamson.

He doesn't give a feeling of world class player when he bats though.

Ross Taylor equals Martin Crowe and Kane Williamson's record for most hundreds for NZ

17th hundred for NZ, now the race is on between Taylor and Kane to break the record.

Brilliant player. He is finally showing some consistency with the bat which augurs well for New Zealand. What happened to BJ Watling? Is he just injured or dropped?

Injured I believe.

Ross Taylor equals Martin Crowe, Kane Williamson's record of most centuries

Ross Taylor equalled the record for the most hundreds by a New Zealand batsman on Monday, joining his mentor, the late Martin Crowe, and current captain Kane Williamson on 17. He was on 96 when he drove Raymon Reifer to the boundary to reach the milestone in New Zealand’s second innings of the second Test against the West Indies at Seddon Park in Hamilton. It took the 33-year-old Taylor 83 Tests to get to his 17th century compared to 77 for Crowe and 61 for Williamson.

Taylor had said before the start of the West Indies Test that it was a deliberate aim to equal the record on his home ground.”I know if I go through the right preparation, give myself the best chance and continually do that, that I will be able to get to 17, 18 or whatever,” he said on the eve of the Test.”Seventeen is the benchmark that Hogan (Crowe) wanted me to get to and beat. But he said, also, carry on and don’t stop there.”

After being called up for Test duty in late 2007, Taylor scored his first century in his third Test, also at Seddon Park, with 120 against England. With just over two days to play against the West Indies, New Zealand were 263 for eight in their second innings, leading by 413 runs.

Taylor was on 100 with Tim Southee.

He will not surpass Crowe as NZ's greatest batsman because of all the great performances Crowe had against the Windies/Wasim-Waqar and other great attacks in 80s. But Ross is still extremely underrated. Gun batsman, and the interview was very emotional.

One of those cases where stats do not do justice to batsman's quality.

Always like him! Classy player.

Of course, will never forget hot Kamran Gilchrist dropped him in World Cup

Taylor has played more impact innings than KW. But I would still put kane over him because of his consistency and technique.
Martin crowe of course is still no.1

Minnow basher. He is clearly inferior to Crowe and Williamson but still a very good test batsmen.

I put him at same level to Azhar Ali but superior to someone like Ian Bell.

Martin crowe was probably the best batsmen of his era against quick bowling and reverse swing and he is the best Kiwi batsmen of all time. Taylor is scrapping with williamson and steve fleming for 2nd spot.

Martin Crowe for me. Ask Wasim & Waqar about him.

Crowe was stylish, mentally tough and a great player in an era when fast bowling was much better than it is now.

Williamson and Crowe are better batsmen for me. Taylor is definitely a NZ great .

No. His mentor Crowe is simply nonpareil. I rate Williamson above Taylor as well. For me the order of NZ batsmen that I have seen is as follows:

1. Crowe
2. Williamson
3. Taylor
4. Fleming
5. McCullum
6. Ryder
7. Astle
8. McMillan
9. Cairns
10. Latham

No that would be Martin Crowe. Brilliant player. Ross Taylor for sure is one of the best players produced by NZ.

One of my favourite batsmen. Also comes across as a very laid back and down to earth guy.

Definitely one of the very best, but not probably among top 3 (Mrowe, Williamson & Turner should come ahead) in Test. I haven't seen Donnelly & Dempster

Should easily Kiwi all-time Test XI

1. GM Turner
2. Martin Donelly
3. Williamson
4. *M Crowe
5. Talyor
6. B Mac+
7. C Cairns
8. RJ Hadlee
9. Vettori
10. Bruce Taylor
11. S Bond
-----------------
12. JR Reid

If MP Donelley doesn't make it for lack of numbers, Fleming opens.

Good player but never enjoyed him bat

Anyway Williamson will surpass him and crowe that's inevitable

Ross Taylor is poised to join an exclusive club of New Zealand cricketers tomorrow when he plays his 200th One Day International for the BLACKCAPS.

The 33-year-old right-hander, who made his ODI debut against the West Indies in Napier in 2006, will join Daniel Vettori (295), Stephen Fleming (280), Brendon McCullum (260), Chris Harris (250), Nathan Astle (223) and Chris Cairns (214) on the list of BLACKCAPS with 200 caps to their name.

BLACKCAPS coach Mike Hesson said Taylor deserved plaudits for not only his length of service, but also the consistency of his output over the past 12 years.

“His record has been phenomenal, year-in, year-out,” said Hesson. “And, if anything, he’s playing better now than ever – so we’re delighted to have his experience and skills within the squad.

“It’s testament to Ross’ appetite and passion for cricket that he’s still working hard to continue to develop his game now."

Ahead of his 200th ODI appearance, against the West Indies at Seddon Park, in Hamilton tomorrow, Taylor had scored 6903 runs in 199 appearances at an average of 45.11, including 17 centuries, 28 half-centuries, and a top-score of 131 not out – against Pakistan in the ICC 2011 Cricket World Cup.

BLACKCAPS captain Kane Williamson made special mention of Taylor’s influence on the team’s fortunes over his career so far.

“Ross has had an enormous bearing on our success over a number of years and, if anything, seems only to be getting better,” said Williamson.

“His performance over the 2017 calendar year was exceptional (averaging 60.50 at a strike-rate of 81.89) and he’s begun the 2018 period in a similar vein."

Taylor, a finalist for the Halberg Sportsman of the Year award, scored the first of his New Zealand record 17 ODI centuries in this third game (against Sari Lanka) and enjoyed a purple patch in 2014 when he scored three consecutive centuries – the first two against India and the third against Pakistan.

He averages 50.19 in ODIs in which he bats first (38.59 batting second), 49.06 at No.4 (30.16 at No.3, and 27.16 at No.5), and 41.11 in Chappell-Hadlee fixtures.

NZC chief executive David White said Taylor’s ODI milestone highlighted his status as one of New Zealand’s best batsmen, ever.

“In the pantheon of New Zealand batsmen, Ross stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the finest players we’ve ever seen,” he said.

“I just want to congratulate him for his fantastic career so far, both on behalf of everyone at NZC and the wider New Zealand cricket family.”

The guy was playing his 200th ODI and his stats are amazing . Almost 7000 runs at an average of 45 with a strike rate of 82 with 17 hundreds . Surely ranks among the best in the business . Plus when he gets in the groove he can single handedly win u a game . Still remember his innings against Pakistan in the world cup !
Inspite of all this he hardly seems to get any credit . I feel he is seriously underrated . How many of us feel the same ??

He is rated highly by everyone. Dont think anyone will say he isnt one of kiwi greats.

Definitely a great among the kiwis. A bit low profile because he doesn't participate in the IPL anymore or any league apart from CPL

He is a very good player. But that's it. He has a tendency to waste a lot of balls when he is not in form and that hurts us. In form, he is phenomenal and unfurls cover drives as opposed to his midwicket slogs.

Very very good player but this is where it ends. Williamson will always be rated higher all formats combined.

Most overrated kiwi batsman along with kane and guptill. Latham is man to go for.

Ross Taylor - Under-rated ODI batsman

Since 2011, he averages close to 60 against the top 5 ! Against the same teams he averages 50+ in WC's.

Played a great knock under pressure today.

He has improved a lot in last 4-5 years( dont know exact number). Was merely a decent odi batsmen back.

Is he NZ greatest odi batsmen ever?

Very underrated & capable of playing match winning knocks under pressure similar to eoin Morgan.

NZ greatest will be Kane Williamson but Taylor is a strong contender for second best NZ bat

Taylor >>> Williamson in ODIs. Taylor has plenty of great knock, many under pressure situation. Williamson is just for stats padding with no impact

Avgs against non-minnows( WI not counting):

Williamson - 45
Taylor - 40
Guptill - 38

There is a common trait developing here to bring down a certain player by bringing into discussion subjective , non quantifiable facts like Pressure runs . Williamson innings against Aus in 2015 WC was pretty good. Not that me pointing out that innings matters. Runs are runs. And I am pretty sure Kane has scored imp runs.

Don't think he's under rated. Pretty much everyone rates him

Nope.

Taylor and Guptill are our best.

Taylor is probably our second best batsmen atm behind Guptill. Both are match winners, Kane is not.

He is the third best middle order batsmen of this generation after AB and Dhoni.

Taylor can improve his WC record tbh in 2019. He is looking in great touch.

Barring that 131 against Akhtar's Pakistan in ICC tournaments, he doesn't have much of mention.

Very fine batsman, improved his off side game as well.

Actually at the moment, Ross is a lot better batsmen than Guptill over their career.

Guptill has a good enough of flaws too. On his day, he is devastating like any one but too dependent on conditions and very inconsistent. He had a poor start to his career too.

Taylor in his last 100 odis has taken a good jump and that too in latter phase of his career where player's careers slow down.

Special innings from him today.

I'm glad to have been able to watch it.
