"Rubbish, MS Dhoni is not going anywhere" : Ravi Shastri shuts down retirement rumours [Update #47]

Has legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni decided to retire from one day international format of the game as well? Speculations about the same are rife after the former skipper was seen taking the ball from the umpire after the end of series against England on Tuesday.

As a video of Dhoni taking the ball from the umpire appeared on social media, it was widely circulated and cricket fans reacted in shock, fearing that the firebrand batsman-wicketkeeper would soon call it a day. Several fans requested Dhoni to not take any such decision.

Notably, during the India-England series, Dhoni became the only player to enter 10,000 ODI runs club with an average of more than 50. He also became the third fastest Indian to enter the club after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

He achieved the feat during the Lord’s ODI, which was won by England. However, Dhoni faced sharp criticism for his slow batting in the match. Dhoni had scored 37 off 59 balls.

Dhoni, the most successful Indian captain so far, had announced his retirement from the Test format of the game on December 30, 2014. The decision came as a shock for his fans as Dhoni made the announcement in the middle of a series in Australia.

The announcement was made through a release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The statement by the BCCI had said, "One of India's greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the test rankings, MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket. BCCI, while respecting the decision of MS Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India."

Oh No. He should have at least waited till next world cup.

On a serious note, this is a sad way to go if it happens.

Opposition will be hoping he stays.

A sad way to go..

But I think maybe he was just waiting for completion of 10K runs which is not a wrong thing IMO.

Well, wow. Surprising if true since I'd have thought he'd want to play in the WC2019

He is retiring perhaps. What a legend!

So much has changed in Indian cricket back from when he debuted in 2004 to today in 2018.

If true he probably realizes now he isn't the force he was. If he is playing just for income he can play t20 leagues and he would definitely get Chennai consultant coach role for sure eventually

The innings on Lords showed that time waits for no one, but he will go out as an All time great. He is amongst the 5 best batsman ever to play the ODI game, and the best finisher the game has seen.

No, don't.

One last world cup. I want him to be there when Malik captains Pakistan to break the streak vs India next year. He's been responsible for like 7 world tournament wins against us in the last 10 years as captain lol.

Please stop spreading rumors. He isn't retired yet. Once he does then make threads.

Keep in mind Dhoni was the tactician and was usually making captaincy decisions while Kohli would be bricking it when the going got tough. You guys will miss him in the WC.

What has taking the ball from the umpire got to do with anything?

Unless this news portal can provide any correlation, disregard this story and any future speculative pieces from them. Fake news if ever there was one.

That said, Dhoni has to go.

Jokes on you guys. He will announce that he plans on playing until the 2023 WC, and make a bid for captaincy of that WC.

"I am going to solidify my place as the ultimate HTB by being the first captain to win 2 WC's at home" :msd

So asking for the ball from the umpires at the end of the game has caused this rumour to surface?

Takes the ball from umpire....

Above means he is about to retire.....

OK. That's a great news but.... In WHAT WORLD DOES HAVE ANY CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TWO!!!!!

Even if he does go there’s nothing sad about it. He’s reported to be worth over $ 100m thanks to cricket, was a brilliant batsman and captain for most of his career and won nearly everything there was to win in the game.

Sad is a James Taylor or Phil Hughes type thing not a 37 year old veteran retiring.

If true. Really 😔 sad. What a lovely player and a decent human being humble down to earth guy. Wish him the best post retirement life.👍

He is a legend and an ATG ODI cricketer. His time was up more than 3 years ago.

He should retire now. He achieved pretty much everything under the Sun. He is a millionaire and a Superstar. He should be part of the team as a coach or selector. Not as a player.

Indian fans should be ashamed of themselves, he was the anchor man, once he goes the team will struggle.

Kohli will still get his 100's but they wont be winning 100s.

No. Indian team did not struggle when Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly etc retired.

We have enough thinking heads in the team. Rohit, Dhawan are well into 30's and very very experienced. If these group of players still need an old man's advice in the middle, then shame on them.

There can be an adjustment period. Its part of the game.

Now Kohli's captaincy will be exposed!!!! I would rather have Dhoni than Sarfraz in LOI matches

Just like how everyone thought Kohli will struggle in Test cricket without Dhoni.

A captain is only as good as his team.

Didnt Dhoni replace them, hard times coming for team india, his presence will be missed. IMHO

If you are talking about preferring Dhoni over Sarfaraz as a captain then that won't work for our team. Pakistani youngsters have attitude problems and get mountain sized egos unless given the danda treatment. And Pakistan's strength lies in aggression in which Sarfaraz has an edge over Dhoni.

"MS Dhoni is going nowhere": Ravi Shastri

The cricketing world went into a tizzy with video grabs showing former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni taking the match ball from the umpire at the end of the third ODI against England at Headingley on Tuesday. With players generally taking the ball only after an impressive show, people started wondering if this was the end of the road for the Man with the Midas touch and whether he would call it a day.

But chief coach Ravi Shastri has dismissed the speculations and said that the idea was to show the ball to bowling coach Bharat Arun and get a fair idea of the conditions.

"MS wanted to show the ball to Bharat Arun. He wanted to show him the wear and tear the ball had endured, to get a general idea of what the conditions were like," Shastri told TOI.

The coach in his typical style said that MSD was here to stay and there was no question of him retiring. "That's rubbish. MS is not going anywhere," Shastri confirmed.

While pundits have been critical of Dhoni’s diminishing skills as a finisher, Shastri said that the old warhorse was still an asset considering what he brings to the table.

"But right now, all this clamour is nonsense. He just wanted to show the ball to Arun to just have a look at it after close to 45 overs had been bowled," he said.

Sad to see that Dhoni is at the stage where he is being begged to leave rather than urged to stay. A great batsman regardless of how badly he performs these days.

Classic strategy by Dhoni mafia. Float rumors of his retirement to totally divert attention from his own pathetic batting through this series.

By the time next LOI series is played in Nov '18, people would have forgotten this series. In between, Dhoni mafia will keep planting stories about how Dhoni is inspiring and helping lots of young people.

A legend who has sadly overstayed his presence. Should have retired from Tests in 2014 and LOIs after 2015 WC.

Has he never seen the ball before?

Suspect this was done to get the rumour mill into overdrive.

Who created this Dhoni Mafia?

:))

Too many people get into a tizzy for no apparent reason. Also his retirement is coming, just maybe not yet.

Shastri, Bharat Arun and MSD.

Three bugs in Indian cricket right now.

Do pal ki khaabon ki daastaan

All dreams broken now, was already imagining us winning the WC, thinking he'd retire, but....

MSD has no shame. Any self respecting guy would retire who is in MSD's boots right now.

Our Indian cricketing heroes do not retire. They need to be kicked out. That is the only way. But MSD is as big as BCCI. He will not go that easily. I think he will play WC 2019 and after that, he will play a few more series saying that BCCI is still grooming the next WK or they will say Pant/Ishan/Samson are not ready bla bla blaaa....

MSD will retire sometime in 2020.

Dhoni pulled a Mark Henry here. Remember when Henry walked in with an orange jacket and his wrestling boot to fake retirement. Then he power slammed Cena and said do you think it would be this easy?

He would leave with a lost of respect if he retires now..otherwise would undo whatever goodwill is left for him.

Do pal ki khaabon ki daastaan 😢😢

You lot can sure over react. The series would have been lost with or without Dhoni. He for sure is over the hill and way past it. But to blame him for the losses is pathetic.

Just look at your bowling. The so called pacers have 0 impact. Batting wise its top 3 only.

Who created this Dhoni Mafia?

BCCI officials, cricket experts like Gavaskar, multiple PR agencies and media honchos.

Renember how we were being fed audio from stump pic of Dhoni's brilliance behind the stumps in guiding the bowlers! And his Social Media team would make those videos viral. Always felt like a sponsored campaign to me.

More than anyone Kohli has to take the blame. After last CT , should have been clear to him Dhoni was done and dusted (which he actually was by 2015). Such a golden chance for Kohli to shape his own LOI side. But caved into Dhoni. Ditto with Shastri.

Whitebeard is gonna ensure that we get knocked out before the semis and are the laughing stock of the world. Sad days for Indian cricket.

I believe Dhoni has earned the right to go out on his own terms. But he better re-discover some form. He needs to spend plenty of time in the nets and re-discover the fire which made him a feared batsman to bowl too when he first started his career. I remember Inzamam calling Dhoni as destructive as Gilchrist in 2006.

The key part in your post was [2006].

Err...no. No individual is above the game. Not Bradman. Not Sachin. Not Viv. Not Lara. And obviously not Dhoni. He is finished and should retire like, right now.

Imagine if he wins the world cup next year for India (heheheeheheheehe) would you also think the same about him?

There is a better chance of dinosaurs coming back to life than Dhoni winning us the World cup.
