SA20 - 2026 Season

Prenelan Subrayen returned to haunt his former team Durban’s Super Giants with an inspired new-ball spell before Rilee Rossouw rode his luck to drive the Joburg Super Kings to a second consecutive Betway SA20 victory at Kingsmead.

The Super Kings cruised past the Super Giants’ paltry 86 all out with six wickets to spare within 12.2 overs to earn the visitors a bonus point and propel them into second place behind the table-topping Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Captain Faf du Plessis’ tactics to open the bowling with Subrayen (3/16) proved to be an inspired choice with the off-spinner ripping through the much-vaunted DSG top-order.

First to depart was the in-form Devon Conway in Subrayen’s opening over before Kane Williamson and Jos Buttler followed within the Powerplay to leave the Super Giants reeling at 21/3.

Du Plessis had a further ace up his sleeve when he replaced wicket-keeper Donovan Ferreira behind the stumps with Matthew de Villiers. Ferreira was thrown the ball and the part-time off-spinner made an immediate impact when he had the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen caught at short mid-wicket.

The Super Giants’ innings faltered away from thereon with captain Aiden Markram (22 off 27 balls) not able to resuscitate his team’s innings on his own as JSK seamer Richard Gleeson ran through the tail with the almost unbelievable figures of 3/2.

The Kingsmead home crowd’s mood was lifted when JSK lost both their openers Du Plessis and De Villiers with only 19 runs on the board, and were filled with even more belief that the Super Giants could deliver a miracle when the visitors slumped to 24/3 after Wiaan Mulder was caught in the deep.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Faf du Plessis, Richard Gleeson, Rilee Rossouw and Prenelan Subrayen with the spinner winning 55.2% of the fan vote.

But unfortunately for DSG, their catching let them down at critical moments in the game with Rossouw afforded two lives on eight and 16 when the left-hander was dropped by Williamson and Evan Jones respectively.

Rossouw made the most of his charmed life by crushing five boundaries and six to power his way to 43 to take JSK to the brink of victory before Ferreira (12 not out off 4 balls) delivered the coup de grace.

What an exhibition of hitting from Rutherford and Brevis. Pretoria 92-1 off the last 5 overs.

Is there a railway track right behind the ground? Seen a train passing on..

Brutal from Rutherford. Absolutely dominated the death overs. Brevis played second fiddle and somewhat lucky not to be exposed by that short ball

Newlands is already a pretty good venue for batting but on days like these when the wind is blowing, batting becomes even easier, while taking catches becomes a total nightmare

Brutal from Rutherford. Absolutely dominated the death overs. Brevis played second fiddle and somewhat lucky not to be exposed by that short ball
Thought he was going to hit six sixes in that Pretorius over but luckily for Pretorius he managed to nail the slower ball yorker on the fifth ball of the over

Stage is set for Rickleton to smash another ton - this time in a winning cause.

47* off 15 balls and if that wasn't enough he came back and took 4-24 with the ball too! Sherfane Rutherford FTW

You don't see these kinds of impactful all-round individual performances in T20 too often..

New Year’s Eve proved to be the good luck charm for Pretoria Capitals as they joined Paarl Royals in opening their Betway SA20 Season 4 accounts with their respective first victories on Wednesday.

Capitals eased past MI Cape Town by 85 runs to earn a bonus point victory at Newlands.

Sherfane Rutherford enjoyed a New Year’s Eve to remember with the West Indies allrounder delivering the perfect all-round performance for Capitals.

Rutherford (47 not out 15 balls, 6x6) and Dewald Brevis (36 not out off 13 balls, 1x4, 4x6) brought the fireworks with the bat before the Windies superstar delivered a career-best bowling performance of 4/24 to dismiss MI Cape Town for just 135 in response to the Capitals’ mammoth 220/5.

The 'Sky Blues' pair delivered an explosive 86-run partnership off just 27 balls that offset a poor Powerplay after a fit-again Kagiso Rabada had helped reduce the visitors to 36/3.

It was a belligerent exhibition of power-hitting with 92 runs for the loss of just one wicket at a run-rate of 18.2 coming in the last five overs.

The duo almost matched each other shot for shot, but it was Rutherford’s astonishing assault on Dewald Pretorius in the penultimate over that shocked the Newlands faithful.

The West Indian blasted four successive maximums, which formed part of a sequence of a half dozen sixes in a row that had been kickstarted by Brevis’ double in the previous over.

It was the perfect ending after Shai Hope (45 off 30 balls, 3x4, 2x6) and Wihan Lubbe (60 off 36 balls, 7x4, 2x6) had done the initial resurrection job.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Dewald Brevis, Wihan Lubbe, Keshav Maharaj and Sherfane Rutherford with the West Indian winning 77.4% of the fan vote.

MI Cape Town’s chase was always going to be dependent on their openers Ryan Rickleton (33 off 17 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (28 off 20 balls) and the pair duly delivered a 60-run stand within the Powerplay.

But their dismissal within a short period of each scuppered MI Cape Town’s run chase, despite Nicholas Pooran matching his fellow West Indian Rutherford by also smashing Keshav Maharaj (3/28) for four consecutive sixes in his six-ball 25.

Maharaj, though, had the last laugh by having Pooran caught in the midst of a three-wicket spell that ripped the heart out of MI Cape Town’s middle-order and ultimately the hosts’ challenge.

Earlier in the day, Paarl Royals captain David Miller masterminded his team’s successful run-chase with a timely unbeaten 71 runs off just 38 balls.

Matthew de Villiers - good talent, another guy who could be a name for South Africa in the future.

Another humdinger of a contest.. This league knows how to deliver the entertainment

New Year's Day 2026 delivered a first-ever Super Over in Betway SA20 history with Joburg Super Kings and Durban’s Super Giants delivering a hair-raising thriller at Wanderers.

Joburg Super Kings wicket-keeper Donovan Ferreira sent the Bullring into a state of delirium when he threw down the stumps to run out Eathan Bosch off the final delivery which tied up the game with both teams finishing on 205.

Richard Gleeson took on the responsibility of bowling the Super Over for JSK, and should have had Evan Jones caught at long-off the first delivery, but maintained his composure for the remainder of the five deliveries to restrict DSG to just six runs with Jones run out on the last ball.

JSK had no trouble knocking off the target with Rilee Rossouw hitting two boundaries off Noor Ahmad to send the hosts to the top of the Betway SA20 table after three consecutive victories.

Super Kings are now also the only unbeaten team remaining in the competition.

The regulation contest saw Shubham Ranjane’s maiden Betway SA20 half-century set up JSK’s 205/4.

The US international blazed an unbeaten 50 off 33 balls, which included four boundaries and two sixes. Ranjane shared an unbroken 49-run partnership off only 16 balls with Ferreira, who also flexed his muscles with 33 not out off 10 balls with one boundary and four sixes.

It followed a solid 64-run partnership between Ranjane and Wiaan Mulder that regained the momentum for JSK after DSG had put the brakes on through spin pair Noor Ahmad and Simon Harmer during the middle period.

Afghanistan star Noor Ahmad was excellent on the night, collecting figures of 3/12 from his four overs, while Harmer finished with 1/22. The DSG spin pair delivered their eight overs for a sum total of 4/33.

But unfortunately for the Super Giants the seam trio of David Wiese (0/53 from 3 overs), Eathan Bosch (0/56 off 4 overs) and Kwena Maphaka (0/50 off 4 overs) leaking a combined 159 from their 11 overs.

They were placed under pressure from the outset with JSK captain Faf du Plessis (47 off 30 balls) and partner Matthew de Villiers (38 off 26 balls) turning up the heat with an opening stand of 89 in 8.4 overs.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Noor Ahmad, Donovan Ferreira, Simon Harmer and Shubham Ranjane with 'The Don' winning 55.6% of the fan vote.

Durban’s Super Giants entire top six all got started in the chase but the visitors could not put together any meaningful partnerships until captain Aiden Markram and Evan Jones put together a 60-run stand off only 24 balls to put the visitors in the hunt.

But Markram held out to long-on off Gleeson (3/41) to set in motion the chaos that unfolded at the death.

Jones kept DSG alive with a 17-ball 43, but his untimely run out off the first ball off the penultimate over and Gleeson clean bowling David Wiese off the very next ball swung the momentum back towards JSK.

The drama was only beginning to unfold though with DSG requiring 15 runs off Wiaan Mulder’s final over.

The Wanderers crowd was on the edge of their seats when Bosch struck the second delivery for six to put Mulder under pressure, who delivered two wides, before Harmer struck the penultimate ball for a boundary to tie up the game before Player of the Match Ferreira claimed a spectacular run out on a truly memorable Betway SA20 New Year’s Day evening.

Indians think that SA20 helps SA cricket but the fact is it might help through monetary reasons but in terms of talent, it’s not helping them at all. There’s some very mid talent on display and they don’t even follow transformation targets which is in place for every SA sports team

It surprises me how Richard Gleeson hasn't been able to have a proper T20 career for England. I get that the selectors may think that he's too old but he's a highly skillful bowler who can bowl with good pace, nail the yorkers, bowl those back-of-the-hand slower balls and take the pace off when needed. In short, he has all the tools in the arsenal, and last night's performance was a masterclass in just that. Above all, he's a proper wicket-taker.

I hope he gets picked in the PSL because he can add alot of value to any side with his bowling.

The current England coach is the guy who picked 4 Right arm 145 kph bowlers with zero variety at Wankhede - Atkinson, Carse, Archer, Wood and watched Abhishek smash them to all parts.

Tbf to him, this is more or less the same attack England have had in white-ball for the past two years. The selectors and previous coach Matthew Mott are just as culpable as him

Defending SA20 champions MI Cape Town missed out on completing the tournament’s highest successful chase in either of their two home fixtures, and also faltered while pursuing the biggest target in Paarl. They are still without a win after four matches, following a nail-biting one-run defeat at Boland Park that leaves them at the foot of the table.

The result was especially satisfying for their rivals, Paarl Royals, who made a strong start, scoring freely to post 181 — their highest total at the venue — before defending it resolutely on a sluggish surface. A major positive for Paarl was the return to form of young opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius, whose T20 career-best 98 anchored the innings, along with a disciplined effort from their bowling unit.

Only once before had a target of 160 or more been successfully chased at Boland Park in the SA20, yet MICT began brightly and reached 109 for 1 after 12 overs — until Ottneil Baartman and Sikandar Raza triggered a dramatic collapse.

MICT lost five wickets for just nine runs in the space of 18 balls, setting up a tense finish. They needed 50 from the final four overs, 30 off the last two, and 15 from the final over, thanks to a vital 51-run seventh-wicket stand between George Linde and Rashid Khan. Baartman ended the partnership in the last over and then dismissed Kagiso Rabada to complete figures of 4 for 51. In doing so, he also became only the second bowler after Marco Jansen to reach 50 SA20 wickets.

Cape Town not looking so good this season. Might be a case of a team with alot of big names who just don't have the right balance

Paarl Royals made Betway SA20 history at Newlands on Sunday when they beat coastal rivals MI Cape Town for the first time at Newlands.

After three previous defeats under the watch of Table Mountain, the Royals completed a Season 4 Western Cape derby double with a comprehensive seven-wicket bonus point victory.

The Royals have now leapfrogged Sunrisers Eastern Cape into second place on 13 points - just two points adrift of table-toppers Joburg Super Kings.

Zimbabwe international Sikander Raza has proved to be a revelation since his arrival in the Royals camp with another stirring performance with the ball. Raza followed up his 3/27 on his Royals debut last Friday with a match-winning 4/13 from his four overs.

The off-spinner was ably supported by 19-year-old rookie Nqobani Mokoena (2/10) and the experienced Ottneil Baartman (2/8) as MI Cape Town crumbled to 88 all out - their lowest score in the history of the competition.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Ottneil Baartman, Nqobani Mokoena, Sikandar Raza, Asa Tribe with Raza winning 75.2% of the fan vote.

Royals lost Lhuan-dre Pretorius early in the chase to Trent Boult, but a solid 54-run partnership between Asa Tribe and Rubin Hermann for the second wicket set the visitors on the path to victory.

Although both Hermann (18, 2x4) and Tribe (34, 3x4, 2x6) fell before the finish line was crossed, there would be no further setbacks with Kyle Verreynne (10 not out, 1x4) and his captain David Miller (19 not out, 2x4, 1x6) sealing the bonus point victory and Cape bragging rights for the boys in pink.

Betway SA20 Season 4 is the year of records with Sunrisers Eastern Cape storming to a first-ever victory over the Pretoria Capitals at Centurion on Monday evening.

Sunrisers completed their highest successful run-chase in Betway SA20 history by cruising past Capitals’ 176/7 with all 10 wickets to spare. It propelled Tristan Stubbs’ side back to the top of the table with 17 points.

Openers Quinton de Kock (79 not out, 41 balls, 5x4, 6x6) and Jonny Bairstow (85 not out, 44 balls, 8x4, 6x6) were in a rampant mood as the experienced duo dispatched the Capitals’ bowlers to all parts of Centurion.

De Kock lit the touchpaper with the left-hander dominating the Powerplay, striking the ball sweetly over the cover region for a couple of sixes off Lungi Ngidi. He later dished out similar treatment to Lizaad Williams as the Sunrisers took control.

Bairstow was initially content to watch De Kock take on the Capitals’ bowlers, but he soon switched gears when Capitals spinner Keshav Maharaj brought himself on in search of the breakthrough.

The former England World Cup winner treated Maharaj with disdain as he blasted five sixes and a boundary in the 12th over to smash 34 runs, which is now the most expensive over in Betway SA20 history.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Quinton de Kock, Connor Esterhuizen, Anrich Nortje and Sherfane Rutherford with the QDK winning 91.2% of the fan vote.

Sunrisers had earlier delivered a clinical bowling and catching display to limit the Capitals to a below-par total.

Although new opener Connor Esterhuizen (52, 33 balls, 6x4, 2x6) and middle-order smasher Sherfane Rutherford (47 not out, 22 balls, 3x4, 4x6) bookended the innings, the Sunrisers never loosened their grip.

Anrich Nortje lit up his former home ground with thunderbolts in excess of 150 km/h to claim 3/32, while Lewis Gregory was metronomical to finish with figures 1/18 off his four overs.

Adam Milne was also able to absorb a 22-run penultimate over to claim 2/36, which included the big wicket of Capitals new West Indian recruit Andre Russell.

It was courtesy of a spellbinding one-handed diving catch from Player of the Match De Kock, which underlined the Sunrisers’ supremacy on the night.

Purely on the basis of talent, Pooran is the most destructive T20 batter around, the only problem is he has sold his soul. :kp

They should have sent Linde or Smith ahead of Reeza. Can't have run a ball striker in shortened game. JSK strategically dropped his catch!? :kp

Unseasonal rain could not prevent MI Cape Town from clinching a dramatic four-wicket (via Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method) victory over Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on Tuesday evening.

MI Cape Town edged past JSK’s revised target of 128 with four balls remaining to claim their much-needed first victory of the competition.

The Newlands faithful have been waiting patiently for Nicholas Pooran to explode and the West Indies dynamo delivered a power-hitting show of the highest calibre. Pooran smashed five sixes in a thrill-a-ball 33 that rewarded the crowd that had waited patiently despite the consistent drizzle.

Each six was bigger than the previous with Pooran’s massive heave on to the top tier of the Members Stand off Richard Gleeson will live in the memory of those who witnessed it for a long while.

Pooran ultimately fell on his sword, being caught on the deep cover boundary, which left Rassie van der Dussen (35 off 24 balls, 3x6) having to hold it together before Jason Smith injected the momentum MI Cape Town required with a boundary-laden 22 off just six balls to the home side to the brink before Karim Janat closed out the victory with four balls remaining.

Intermittent weather had earlier seen the match delayed by an hour before Super Kings could begin their innings after being inserted by MI Cape Town.

JSK captain Faf du Plessis and his new opening partner James Vince stormed out of the starting blocks with a 32-run partnership off just 2.4 overs before Vince (15 off 9 balls, 2x4, 1x6) was caught in the covers off George Linde.

Du Plessis has showed already that he was in a destructive mood, striking MI Cape Town spearhead Kagiso Rabada for four successive boundaries in the second over, and continued to lead JSK’s charge after Vince’s dismissal.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Corbin Bosch, Faf du Plessis, Rashid Khan and Nicholas Pooran with 'Nicky P' winning 59.7% of the fan vote.

After striking Linde over long-on, Du Plessis set his sights on New Zealander Trent Boult in the final over before the conclusion of the Powerplay.

Du Plessis cracked four boundaries and six to power JSK to 69/2 before the heavens opened again to force the players off the field.

The second delay lasted 75 minutes which saw the contest reduced to 12 overs per side.

JSK’s momentum was severely disrupted with Du Plessis (44 off 21 balls, 7x4, 2x6) falling almost immediately after the resumption.

The home side clawed their way back into contention through Corbin Bosch (3/24) and Rashid Khan (2/32) with only Matthew de Villiers (21 off 15 balls, 3x4) managing to get JSK up to 123/7, but it was not enough on the night.

This kind of rain-affected game, the advantage is always with the side batting second. 10 wickets in hand, 12 an over is nothing these days... it's a cakewalk. Cape Town got lucky with the toss

It's not easy to take catches at Cape Town if there is something in the air and tonight there was alot of fog too, which means ball was moving unpredictably and fielders were regularly losing it. On top of that, because of rain and dew the ball was very slippery too. Not easy to take catches in such conditions, eventhough a couple were sitters

It's worth asking the question, is Klaasen done? Everyone has been hoping for him to reverse his retirement, but fact is, he hasn't looked good in any of the leagues he has played recently..

Dont want to be controversial but this league looks like second best after IPL. The playing conditions, commentary, crowd everything is top notch. South Africa is a brilliant place to play cricket. Hope they get more ICC events in future.

It is actually the second best league.

Looks like things may not be going great in the background, an Indian investor and SuperSport who collectively own 50% of the tournament are potentially looking to cut their involvement:

Betway SA20 served up yet another nail-biting encounter on Sunday with Durban’s Super Giants edging home by two wickets over Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St George’s Park.

DSG’s victory with three balls to spare not only kept their playoff chances alive and kicking by moving past MI Cape Town into fifth place, but it has also created a bun fight at the top of the League table.

Only four points separate first-placed Sunrisers (19) and Paarl Royals (15) in fourth place, although the Royals have played one game less.

Super Giants required Evan Jones to hold his nerve with the allrounder smashing Anrich Nortje for a boundary to set off the celebrations in the visiting dressing room.

The victory had all but looked secure when DSG blasted 71/1 in the Powerplay to eat a large chunk out of the Sunrisers’ 158/5.

Captain Aiden Markram enjoyed his promotion up the order and set the Super Giants on their way upon his return to St George’s Park for the first time. The former Sunrisers skipper silenced the Orange Army with a half dozen boundaries in his 13-ball 25 before he was brilliantly caught by Marco Jansen on the long-off boundary.

Opening partner Marques Ackerman maintained the momentum with 45 off 26 balls (6x4, 1x6) to leave DSG at 80/2 with only a further 79 required off just less than a run-a-ball.

But Sunrisers are renowned for their fighting spirit and clawed their way back by chipping away at the much-vaunted DSG middle-order through a brilliant spell of left-arm spin bowling from Senuran Muthusamy (2/20) and pace of Nortje and Jansen.

Sunil Narine, Heinrich Klaasen, Jos Buttler, David Bedingham and Liam Livingstone all fell to injudicious shots to leave DSG precariously placed at 137/7 after 17.2 overs.

It was left to tailender Gerald Coetzee (13 off 6 balls, 1x4, 1x6) to strike a crucial boundary in the penultimate over to revive DSG’s run chase, although he too fell on his sword to Adam Milne to set up the tense last over.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Marques Ackerman, Senuran Muthusamy, Sunil Narine and Tristan Stubbs with the losing skipper winning 50.8% of the fan vote.

Earlier, Sunrisers’ innings was a stop-start affair with DSG’s Caribbean import Sunil Narine (1/24) dominating the first Powerplay. The former West Indies T20 World Cup winner showed his value with an excellent spell, which included a maiden, to restrict the Sunrisers upfront.

The home team were not able to get their innings forward until the arrival of captain Tristan Stubbs (47 not out off 30 balls, 5x4, 1x6).

The skipper assessed the conditions initially, managing just 11 of 18 balls, before the late onslaught with Lewis Gregory (25 not out off 17 balls, 2x4, 1x6) that saw the Sunrisers blast 53 runs in the final three overs.

But unfortunately for the two-times champions that was not enough on the day with DSG taking the spoils to reignite their Betway SA20 Season 4 campaign.

Pretoria Capitals delivered an inspired all-round performance to send MI Cape Town crashing to a 53-run defeat on balmy Betway SA20 evening at Centurion.

The bonus-point victory propelled Pretoria Capitals to 20 points and top of the Betway SA20 table with Sunrisers Eastern Cape (19) dropping down to second.

MI Cape Town’s playoff aspirations are hanging on by the barest of margins with only two matches remaining against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

A sold-out Monday night crowd spurred on the home team with Sherfane Rutherford (53 off 27 balls (3x4, 5x6) lifting the Capitals to 185/6 through his maiden Betway SA20 half-century before Gideon Peters ran through MI Cape Town’s middle-order with a double-wicket maiden over that restricted the defending champions to 132/7.

Peters (3/32) was assisted by some mind-blowing catching by Dewald Brevis in the outfield. Brevis’ first grab saw him running around the boundary before clutching the ball in front of the grass banks before lunging forward in a full-stretch dive to secure a sensational catch just inches from the turf two balls later.

This resulted in MI Cape Town losing four wickets for just 11 runs during a frenetic period that saw the visitors slump from 46/2 to 55/6. The visitors were unable to recover from this collapse with Reeza Hendricks (68 not out, 50 balls, 4x4, 4x6) playing a lone hand.

MI Cape Town had been in control of the first quarter of the game before Rutherford walked to the crease with the Capitals precariously placed at 89/4 with 7.1 overs remaining in the innings.

When he was dismissed off the final ball, caught a long-on, the West Indies power-hitter had inflicted some serious damage.

MI Cape Town’s death bowling and catching went walkabout during this period with both Rutherford and fellow slugger Brevis being dropped off consecutive Corbin Bosch deliveries.

The swashbuckling pair made the visitors pay dearly with a blazing 69-run partnership off just 34 balls for the fifth wicket.

Brevis’ consecutive sixes off MI Cape Town spearhead Kagiso Rabada will long be remembered by the Centurion faithful. The first was a no-look swipe over fine leg before utilising just one hand to smash the next length ball over the cover boundary.

Rutherford, meanwhile, targeted Trent Boult with the New Zealand swing-bowler overpitching three times in one over which cost him 16 runs due to two maximums and a boundary.

The Capitals took this momentum with them into the field and can now head to their remaining two matches against Paarl Royals at home and Joburg Super Kings away at the Wanderers with confidence.

What a match. Sikander Raza, you beauty. Six off the last ball under big pressure.

Once again crowd and atmosphere were top-notch. Six off the last ball sent the home crowd into raptures

Sikandar Raza climbed deeper into the hearts of the Paarl Royals faithful when the Zimbabwean international struck a six off the final ball to clinch a six-wicket victory at Boland Park on Tuesday evening.

Royals required six runs off David Wiese’s final over, and the equation was reduced to two runs off the last delivery, when Raza held his nerve in this Betway SA20 clutch moment to send the Royals fans into a state of delirium.

It also saw the Royals close out a highest record chase at Boland Park after Durban’s Super Giants had posted an imposing 186/5.

Raza finished on 27 not out (13 balls, 2x4, 2x6), but Royals had plenty of heroes on this dramatic night with Rubin Hermann (65 not out, 45 balls, 3x4, 3x6) and Dan Lawrence (63 off 41 balls, 2x4, 4x6) striking vital half-centuries to keep the chase afloat.

The third-wicket partnership between Hermann and Lawrence was pivotal with the pair adding 106 runs off only 61 balls.

Lawrence was particularly severe on DSG’s spinners, smashing Simon Harmer for six along with taking a boundary and six off Liam Livingstone, to inject momentum into the innings.

It contrasted with Royals’ ace Afghanistan mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman delivering an economical spell of 2/22 amidst the onslaught from DSG’s power-packed batting unit.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Rubin Hermann, Dan Lawrence, Liam Livingstone and Aiden Makram with Hermann winning 45% of the fan vote.

Captain Aiden Markram led the charge with 66 off 46 balls (2x4, 3x6) before Liam Livingstone (32 not out off 10 balls, 1x4, 4x6) and Heinrich Klaasen (29 off 18 balls, 2x4, 2x6) unleashed their power-hitting skills at the backend of the innings.

But ultimately it was not enough with the Royals moving up to second place on 19 points with their superior number of victories edging out Sunrisers into third position.

Super Giants, meanwhile, remain in fifth place on 14 points and face a must-win final round-robin match against the Royals at Kingsmead on Saturday.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape became the first team to secure their place in the Betway SA20 Season 4 Playoffs with a resounding 63-run bonus point victory over Joburg Super Kings at St George’s Park on Wednesday evening.

Sunrisers have reclaimed top position with 24 points, while JSK remain in fourth place on 17 points. The result also ensured that Durban’s Super Giants remain in contention for a playoff spot ahead of their final game against Paarl Royals at Kingsmead on Saturday.

Sunrisers debutant James Coles led the way with the bat, with an unbeaten 61 (34 balls, 10x4) before the 21-year-old took over with the ball, with figures of 2/34 from his four overs, to cap a dream first outing in front of The Orange Army.

The home side had Joburg Super Kings, who without their regular captain Faf du Plessis due to injury for the first time, in a spin throughout with fellow left-armer Senuran Muthusamy delivering an equally classy spell of 3/26.

The Sunrisers spin duo were responsible for all of the first six Super Kings wickets to fall - bar a fantastic run out that Coles was also involved in.

Super Kings had been set a challenging 179 for victory - the identical total Durban’s Super Giants overhauled just a few days ago here at St George’s Park - but apart from a brisk 31-run opening stand in 3.3 overs between James Vince (30 off 23 balls) and Rivaldo Moonsamy - the visitors were never able to keep up with the required run-rate.

With Coles and Muthusamy tightening the noose and wickets falling regularly, the run-rate escalated to beyond 10 runs per over, and that was simply too much for the inexperienced JSK middle to chase down with pacers Adam Milne (1/10), Anrich Nortje (1/13) and Marco Jansen (2/33) maintaining the pressure.

The four Player of the Match candidates were James Coles, Quinton de Kock, Akeal Hosein and Senuran Muthusamy with Coles winning 65.9% of the fan vote.

Sunrisers, who had been inserted by JSK, were again indebted to the in-form Quinton de Kock, who powered his way to 54 from just 37 deliveries (5x4, 2x6). It was De Kock’s third half-century of the campaign as he and Jonny Bairstow raced out of the blocks with a 48-run opening stand in 4.4 overs.

There was a couple of blips from thereon with the Sunrisers losing wickets in clusters to be placed at 90/4 heading into the second half of the innings, but captain Tristan Stubbs and Coles steadied the ship before exploding at the death with a match-winning 88-run partnership off 55 balls.

SA20 has good quality. Lots of great South African players.

I just hope they will get rid of those IPL names and have their own unique names. That's a turnoff. :inti

Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape look like the strongest and most well-rounded teams. I would be surprised if they are not the two finalists.

SA20 has good quality. Lots of great South African players.

I just hope they will get rid of those IPL names and have their own unique names. That's a turnoff. :inti
The dumbest name is MI Cape Town. It makes no sense as a team name and just feels like a lazy attempt to put the brand name on the city. The rest of the names all work as team names.

Ottneil Baartman delivered a seam-bowling masterclass to claim a marvellous hat-trick that formed part of a brilliant five-wicket haul to drive Paarl Royals into the Betway SA20 playoffs at a sold-out Centurion on Thursday evening.

Baartman became just the second bowler in Betway SA20 history to grab a hat-trick after Pretoria Capitals seamer Lungi Ngidi achieved the feat just last week against Durban’s Super Giants at Kingsmead.

His victims were Andre Russell, Lizaad Williams and Ngidi. He had earlier claimed two wickets also with successive deliveries when he clean-bowled Connor Esterhuizen and trapped Jordan Cox plumb in front.

It allowed the 32-year-old to move past his former Sunrisers Eastern Cape teammate Marco Jansen as the leading bowler in the League’s history with 57 wickets.

Baartman’s 5/16 helped rout the Capitals for just 127 which enabled the batters to comfortably chase down the target with six wickets and 4.1 overs remaining. It was sufficient to earn the invaluable bonus point that propelled the Royals to top of the Betway SA20 standings with 21 points.

Royals now join Sunrisers Eastern Cape as the two teams to have already secured their playoff berths.

It was no coincidence that the first Royals teammate to congratulate Baartman on his hat-trick was Sikandar Raza. The Zimbabwean international was again in the heat of the action, following up his batting heroics a couple of nights ago, with another brilliant spell of spin bowling.

The veteran picked up the crucial wickets of Dewald Brevis and Shai Hope to finish with figures of 2/29. Raza now sits just below Baartman on the competition’s top wicket-takers list with 13 dismissals.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Ottneil Baartman, Rubin Hermann, Sikandar Raza, Sherfane Rutherford with the hat-trick hero winning 89.5% of the fan vote.

Royals’ run-chase suffered a couple of early stutters with openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Asa Tribe being dismissed cheaply by an inspired Lizaad Williams (2/28), but Rubin Hermann (46 off 28 balls, 5x4, 3x6) and Dan Lawrence (41 off 32 balls, 3x4, 2x6) put together a 52-run partnership for the third wicket to steady the ship before captain David Miller guided his team home with an unbeaten 28.

Royals are now primed to finish in the top two positions that will earn them a spot in Qualifier 1 as they still have two round-robin matches remaining against Durban’s Super Giants at Kingsmead on Saturday and Joburg Super Kings at Boland Park on Monday.

The Capitals, meanwhile, have just one more match remaining against Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Saturday and will be hoping for maximum points to ensure their progression to the playoffs for the first time since Season 1.

Centurion will next host the Eliminator on Thursday, 22 January after successfully selling out all five matches hosted this season at the Capitals' home ground.

Afghan players no longer play in BBL and PSL. Many Afghan players are playing in this South African league as a result.

MI Cape Town have revived their Betway SA20 playoff chances with a three-wicket victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Newlands on Friday evening.

The defending champions collected four valuable points to lift them to 14 points with their all-important final round-robin fixture against Sunrisers at St George’s Park on Sunday remaining.

MI Cape Town, however, missed out on the bonus point, which resulted in Pretoria Capitals (20 points) joining Sunrisers (24 points) and Paarl Royals (24 points) as the third team to advance to the playoffs.

The home team were spurred on by a fifth successive sold-out Newlands crowd from the moment Trent Boult had the in-form Quinton de Kock caught behind the very first ball of the innings.

MI Cape Town maintained the pressure throughout with Boult rediscovering his form with 3/28 before Corbin Bosch closed out the innings with figures of 4/34.

All the Sunrisers batters struggled to adapt to a two-paced Newlands surface with only Marco Jansen striking the ball with any sort of freedom. The lanky allrounder stroked four sixes and three boundaries in his 23-ball 48 and along with a sedate 28 off 27 balls from James Coles, the Sunrisers posted 139/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

Jansen took his batting form straight into the MI Cape Town innings with the left-armer removing both Rassie van der Dussen and the in-form Ryan Rickelton in the Powerplay to provide Sunrisers with the start they would have been hoping for.

But Reeza Hendricks (41 off 43 balls) dug his heels in to play the anchor role to ensure that despite MI Cape Town continuing to lose wickets, they would inch closer to the required total.

The four Player of the Match candidates were Corbin Bosch, Trent Boult, Reeza Hendricks and Marco Jansen with Bosch taking the honours.

Allrounder George Linde struck a breezy 31 off 18 balls and new import Kieron Pollard contributed 20 off 14, but still Sunrisers stayed in their fight.

It became tricky towards the end when Hendricks was dismissed off the final ball of the penultimate over, caught at deep cover off Anrich Nortje, leaving MI Cape Town requiring four runs off the final over.

For MI Cape Town and the Newlands faithful, Sunrisers allrounder Senuran Muthusamy (2/25) over-stepped to offer up Bosch a free hit to close out the game and keep the champions alive in the competition.
