Seamers Ottniel Baartman and Marco Jansen powered the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to their second consecutive Betway SA20 final after a convincing 51-run victory over Durban’s Super Giants in the Qualifier 1 at Newlands.

The defending champions were superior in all facets and will now spend the week in Cape Town in the build-up to Saturday’s grand final.

Durban’s Super Giants will travel to Johannesburg when they will meet the winner of Paarl Royals vs Joburg Super Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Wanderers on Thursday for a second opportunity to advance to the final.

Opener Dawid Malan held the Sunrisers’ innings together with his second half century of the competition. The Englishman rediscovered his touch with 63 off 45 (6x4, 1x6) that formed the cornerstone of the Sunrisers’ 157/8, which was disrupted by a two-hour rain delay.

Captain Aiden Markram also contributed 30 off 23 balls, but the skipper’s dismissal set about a collapse that saw the defending champions lose five wickets for 29 runs.

Two run outs and some excellent death bowling from Junior Dala (2/35) provided DSG with momentum heading into their run chase.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape were provided with the perfect start though with Marco Jansen (4/16) removing Tony de Zorzi in the second over. De Zorzi was the first of Jansen’s four scalps on the night.

But the game-changing over of the evening came when Baartman delivered a double-wicket maiden. The right-arm seamer has been consistent throughout the competition for the Sunrisers with his 4/10 propelling him to the top of the Betway SA20 wicket-takers leaderboard.

His first wicket saw Matthew Breetzke top-edge a flyer to wicket-keeper Tristan Stubbs. The second was, however, due to brilliant piece of athleticism from Markram with the skipper throwing out one hand whilst in the air to help dismiss Jon Jon Smuts at mid-on.

The Super Giants still had the dangerous Quinton de Kock at the crease, but he too was sent back to the dugout courtesy of another fantastic caught and bowled from Liam Dawson. The left-arm spinner also had DSG’s top-scorer Wiaan Mulder (38) caught in the deep.

The Sunrisers, however, knew that whilst Heinrich Klaaasen was still at the crease the Super Giants were always still in the hunt.

And that’s when Baartman held his nerve by having Klaaasen (23 off 15 balls) caught behind just when the Proteas superstar was starting to warm up.

Klaasen’s dismissal signalled the end of DSG’s challenge on the night with Jansen running through the tail to ensure a smooth passage to the final for the Sunrisers.

Joburg Super Kings crush Paarl Royals in SA20 Eliminator

Sam Cook’s four-fer, followed by Leus du Plooy and Faf du Plessis’s blistering half-centuries helped Joburg Super Kings crush Paarl Royals in the Eliminator of SA20 here on Wednesday.

The home side invited Paarl Royals to bat first and reduced them to 43-4 in five overs, with Nandre Burger and Cook grabbing two wickets each.

David Miller and Dane Vilas (21) then knitted a 44-run stand in 33 balls to recover from the early damage before Burger once again struck to break the promising stand.

Miller waged a lone war from his end while losing partners on the other end as he top scored with 47 off 40, laced with four boundaries and two sixes.

Imran Tahir ended Miller’s gutsy knock on the last ball of the 17th over to reduce the Royals to 126-8.

Cook then wrapped things up as he picked the last two wickets in the same over at a total of 138. He led the bowling charts with the figures of 4-24, while Burger claimed three wickets for 26 runs.

In response, the Super Kings came out all guns blazing as Leus du Plooy and Captain Faf du Plessis ran riot on the Royals from the word go.

They knitted a 105-run opening stand in 11 overs, scoring their respective half-centuries in the process before Tabraiz Shamsi provided the breakthrough.

Du Plooy, who scored 68 off 43, was the only wicket to fall for the hosts after smashing two sixes and even boundaries.

Joburg Super Kings successfully chased down the total in 13.2 overs, with Du Plessis going unbeaten with 55 runs from 34 balls, which featured three boundaries and three sixes.

Joburg Super Kings will face Durban’s Super Giants in Qualifier 2 of SA20. The winner will qualify for the final against the defending SA20 champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Heinrich Klaasen blasted Durban's Super Giants into their first-ever Betway SA20 final as the Super Giants comfortably beat Joburg Super Kings by 69 runs in Qualifier 2 at the Wanderers.

Klaasen smashed 74 off just 30 balls (3x4, 7x6) to power DSG to 211/6. The Proteas superstar was well supported by Wiaan Mulder, who struck an equally rapid unbeaten 50 off just 23 balls (3x3, 3x6).

DSG debutant, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, also made a solid contribution in his first outing in the competition with 35 off 23 balls.

The Super Kings had done well to reduce DSG to 94/4 after 12.1 overs with left-arm seamer Nandre Burger (2/27) delivering a fiery spell upfront.

But that's when Klaasen and Mulder began their work as they added a mammoth 101 runs in just 38 balls for the fifth wicket to take the game away from the Super Kings.

The JSK run chase was always going to be dependent on their captain Faf du Plessis, but once he departed early after being caught by Quinton de Kock, who took a good catch running back to boundary, the home team's mountain became so much steeper.

It was valiant effort after they had won their Eliminator just 24 hours earlier to give themselves the opportunity of qualifying for the final.

Moeen Ali (30), Reeza Hendricks (27) and Donovan Ferreira (24) all struck cameos for the Super Kings, but nobody could match Klaasen’s sheer brute force of earlier in the day.

Klaasen is now second on the Betway SA20 leading run-scorers list with 447 runs and needs 84 runs in Saturday's final to overtake MI Cape Town’s Ryan Rickelton at the top of the leaderboard.

The DSG bowlers backed up their batters’ pyrotechnics with a complete performance in the field and with the ball.

Junior Dala led the way again with 4/38, with Naveen (2/27) and Dwaine Pretorius (2/17) providing good support.

The catching was also out of the top drawer, highlighted by Naveen-ul-Haq’s two-handed spectacular grab at mid-off.

The Super Giants travelled up to Johannesburg for Qualifier 2 after losing to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Newlands on Tuesday evening in Qualifier 1.

They will now return to Cape Town for the final in a rematch with the Sunrisers at Newlands on Saturday.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won back-to-back Betway SA20 championships after an empathic 89-run victory over Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands on Saturday evening.

After topping the group stage, the Sunrisers delivered a clinical performance in the final.

Half-centuries from Tom Abell (55) and Tristan Stubbs (56 not out) along with contributions from Jordan Hermann and captain Aiden Markram, who both contributed 42, respectively, saw the Sunrisers post a formidable 204/3.

Partnerships were crucial in the Sunrisers’ innings with Hermann and Abell setting up the winning total with a 90-run stand for the second wicket after the early loss of Dawid Malan.

Durban’s Super Giants captain, Keshav Maharaj, hit back with a double-wicket over by removing both set batters in Hermann and Abell.

But the Sunrisers showed they had plenty more in reserve with Markram and Stubbs rebuilding the innings before exploding towards the backend with 98 runs off 55 balls.

The Sunrisers’ bowling unit has been their strongest discipline all season and their seamers certainly rose to the occasion on the night.

Dan Worrall (2/15) set the tone upfront again with the dismissal of Quinton de Kock early on before Marco Jansen delivered two hammer blows in the fourth over with the removal of Jon Jon Smuts and Bhanuka Rajapaksa to leave the Super Giants reeling at 7/3.

Wiaan Mulder attempted a recovery job with quickfire 38, but that’s when Ottniel Baartman (2/17) delivered the moment of the match.

He had already dismissed Matthew Breetzke, but it was his in-swinger that wrapped the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen on the pads first ball that closed the game as a contest.

DSG were on the ropes at 63/5 which left the door open for Jansen (5/30) to come charging through and finish off the Super Giants tail to complete the back-to-back triumphs.

It was a poignant moment for Jansen after he struck the six last season that won the inaugural Betway SA20 championship and now claimed the final wicket again this year.

Betway SA20 has announced the 12-man squad of performing players to make up the Team of the Season. Season 2 saw some phenomenal individual performances, with the competition producing high-quality and competitive cricket across the 34 matches.

2024 Champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and losing Finalists, Durban’s Super Giants, are the most represented teams, with each team boasting five star players in the 12-man squad.

The team was selected with the assistance of cricket's leading analytics specialists, CricViz, which uses a performance evaluation measure to assess the performance of players across a match and competition.

Ryan Rickelton - MI Cape Town

Batting points: 172.52 ; Fielding points: 5.00 ; Total points: 181.52

Rickelton was the competition’s top run-scorer with 530 runs at an average of 58.88. The MI Cape Town opener struck five half-centuries, which included three scores in the ‘90s.

Jos Buttler (wk) - Paarl Royals

Batting points: 126.79 ; Fielding points: 25.00 ; Total points: 158.79

Buttler enjoyed another solid SA20 season with 408 runs at an average of 40.80 to go with his 391 runs in Season 1. The England opener rediscovered his game this past month and it showed in his performances.

Tom Abell - Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Batting points: 116.17 ; Fielding points: 9.00 ; Total points: 135.17

An unsung hero within the Sunrisers campaign throughout, Abell came to the fore with a Player of the Match performance in the final at Newlands. His 286 runs at an average of 47.66 was vital to the success of the Sunrisers.

Tristan Stubbs - Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Batting points: 87.32 ; Fielding points: 18.00 ; Total points: 114.32

Stubbs delivered on his Season 1 promise with innings of great maturity this past season. He often walked to the crease at difficult times, and found a way to come on top. He finished as the Sunrisers’ leading run-scorer with 301 runs at 60.20. He also grew into the wicket-keeping role as the competition progressed.

Heinrich Klaasen - Durban’s Super Giants

Batting points: 190.46 ; Fielding points: 23.00 ; Total points: 224.46

The undoubted star of Season 2, Klaasen deservedly finished as the Betway SA20 Player of the season for his phenomenal batting efforts, which included the fastest fifty of the competition. His 447 runs at an average of 40.63 does not do justice to the impact he had.

Wiaan Mulder - Durban’s Super Giants

Batting points: 92.82 ; Bowling points: 11.40, Fielding points: 14.00 ; Total points: 126.23

After floating around the DSG batting line-up initially, Mulder found his sweet spot in the middle-order. He played some crafty innings, often pulling DSG out of a pickle. He managed 297 runs at an average of 37.12.

Marco Jansen - Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Batting points: 39.60 ; Bowling points: 91.37, Fielding points: 16.00 ; Total points: 156.97

The lanky all-rounder grew in stature in Season 2 with both bat and ball. His international experience certainly came to the fore, particularly in the final when he claimed 5/30. He finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 20 scalps.

Keshav Maharaj - Durban’s Super Giants (captain)

Batting points: 9.54 ; Bowling points: 79.25, Fielding points: 8.0 ; Total points: 112.79

The DSG captain led from the front, with his superb bowling spells putting the opposition under immense pressure. He was the leading spinner in the competition with 15 wickets at an economy of just 7.30.

Noor Ahmed - Durban’s Super Giants

Bowling points: 75.52, Fielding points: 2.0 ; Total points: 81.52

The Afghanistan mystery spinner only spent a short time at Betway SA20, but had a major impact for DSG. His unavailability for the playoffs due to international duty had a significant influence on the Super Giants’ fate. He claimed 12 wickets in just six matches, including a five-for.

Dan Worrall - Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Batting points; 0.01, Bowling points: 83.16, Fielding points: 8.0 ; Total points: 101.17

Another one of Sunrisers coach Adrian Birrell’s mystery pics, the English/Australian seam bowler led the attack with aplomb. He was miserly upfront and picked up wickets to set the tone for the Eastern Cape side. He claimed 17 wickets in the competition.

Ottniel Baartman - Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Batting points; 0.12, Bowling points: 119.15, Fielding points: 5.0 ; Total points: 133.27

The Oudtshoorn Express put his name up in lights during Season 2 and should now be a frontrunner for a Proteas T20 call-up. He was excellent throughout, particularly during the middle-overs and at the death. He formed part of a formidable Sunrisers pace trio and collected 18 wickets in the process.

12th man: Matthew Breetzke - Durban’s Super Giants

Batting points; 108.11, Fielding points: 17.0 ; Total points: 135.11

Arguably the most improved player in Season 2, Breetzke has taken his game to a new level with a string of exceptional performances at the top of the order for DSG. He finished third on the overall run-scorers list with 416 runs.

DSG'S CHILLED VIBES PERFECT FIT FOR ROOKIE PARSONS

Every young cricketer dreams of playing on the same stage as their childhood heroes.

Imagine the excitement then when the opportunity arises to share the same change room.

That's the luck that befell Betway SA20 Rookie Bryce Parsons when he joined Durban's Super Giants for Season 2.

Parsons, 23, was so excited that he even posted a picture of himself whilst still a little boy alongside then Proteas fast bowler Morne Morkel followed by him receiving his first DSG shirt from the now Super Giants bowling coach.

It is experiences like these that are priceless for Rookies such as Parsons. The opportunity to have access to greats of the game like Morkel and furthermore tap into the vast knowledge of global superstars such as Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen and Nicholas Pooran.

“It was a great experience for the young guys like me even though I didn't get a game,” Parsons said.

“A lovely experience to rub shoulders with some of the greats of the game. Lots of learnings took place.

“It gave me a lot of confidence to take into the rest of the season.”

Despite not getting on the park due to the power-packed DSG batting unit, the former SA U19 captain worked closely with Proteas legend and DSG head coach Lance Klusener.

“Zulu is very chilled down to earth man. He lets you go about your business the way you want to go about it,” Parsons said.

“He has his team talks but not many. It was a calm and chilled environment. That's something I have tried to lean on in these couple of four-day games.

“Going about things the way you want to go about things, and not necessarily the way people have always told you. That's what I took from him.

“It was a perfect set up for a Durban side. Lots of chilled vibes. And I am a very chilled guy. He’s not as intense as some people and that suited me.”

Parsons has certainly taken the lessons on board and implemented it in his game immediately. In his first match back for the Dolphins after returning from Betway SA20 duty, the attacking left-hander clubbed a career-best 191 off 179 balls (25x4, 4x6) in a CSA 4-Day First-Class fixture.

He shared a mammoth 293-run partnership with fellow DSG star Jon-Jon Smuts (156).

“It (SA20) gave me the confidence that I belong in the professional environment,” he said.

“My first couple of years I felt like I was still finding my feet, but SA20 gave me that extra confidence. I didn't feel like I had that in my first two seasons, but coming back from that I felt like I could dominate and hold my own.”

Parsons will not be eligible as a Rookie in Season 3, and has therefore set his sights on performing in the upcoming CSA T20 Challenge in order to attract a bid in the next auction.

“I am not looking too far ahead, but I can't be a rookie again. That has come and gone,” he said.

“So, I will need to be on top of my game in the T20 challenge if I am going to convince anyone to raise their paddle for me in the future.”
