South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung is keen to set up its assembly plant in Pakistan, informed Federal Minister for Industries & Production Hammad Azhar on Friday.

The development comes during the minister’s meeting with Samsung Pakistan MD and CEO. The minister said that the smartphone production in Pakistan is increasing exponentially following the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) implementation of Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), and Mobile Policy launched recently.

The minister informed Samsung officials appreciated both policies and are now actively considering setting up a smartphone assembly plant in Pakistan.

Back in May, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved in principle Pakistan’s first Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy.

After a detailed briefing on various aspects of the policy, the ECC directed the Ministry of Industries and Production to further fine-tune its various features and incentives for promoting localization and research and development leading to export of mobile phones.

Ministry of Industries and Production initiated Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy in January 2019 by designating Engineering Development Board (EDB) as a secretariat for policy formulation through consultation with public and private sector stakeholders.

Beat me to it, leveling up Abdullah :yk

First Amazon starting AWS in Pakistan and now Samsung considering assembling. Pakistan going places under the current government.

Then people ask what has Imran Khan done.

will this result in there highly expensive phone prices coming down or not? If their prices dont reduce even after coming into Pakistan than there is no point of Samsung Mobile coming to Pakistan

If Samsung does sell phones at good prices in Pakistan than it could be successful.

When it comes to budget smart phones, Huawei was dominating. They have got good reliable phones, and you could get a good one with good features at 20k.
However, after Google services were shutdown in Huawei, people have looked at OPPO, Redmi and other chinese phones who are selling at cheap prices, but dont know if those phones are good or not.

Good news! It would be great for the country. Pakistan is already missing out on so much by not having many MNCs operating in the country!

Samsung’s prices are higher because that is their pricing strategy. They still generate a lot of sales. That’s the power of having brand value.

I am not talking about their main phones. Notes and the S series will be expensive.

I am talking about their cheaper versions. Samsung also has those A series and other phones that are in the range of 20-30K. But the problem with those phones are, their features and hardware are not comparable to the cheaper Huawei phones which have good processor and are being sold below 20k.

Only the rich can buy the Samsung and Apple phones orignal series. THe rest of the population either buys them at second hand price, or get their refurbished fake versions which dont last long.

Ever since 3g and 4g came, Pakistan has attracted many phone companies.

Samsung has J-Galaxy and A-10 competing in the 20K range. But their features and hardware isn't as good as what Huawei is offering at a price of 19000.

I wasn’t talking about their main phones either. High-end phones form a small percentage of sales in Pakistan.

They use a similar strategy with their medium-priced phones. They offer inferior hardware (chipset, RAM) but usually stick to AMOLED screens and offer a good experience because of their UI. The lower-end phones like the A10 are very basic, but at that price point, honestly, nothing is going to be that great. A10 was still one of the best-selling phones worldwide last year because it sells well in developing countries.

The Chinese phones are gaining in popularity but Samsung’s mid-range phones still sell very well all over the world with this strategy.

The likes of Xiaomi are much better value for money in the mid-range segment in Pakistan. But Samsung offer the better screen and UI at that price point than their competitors still.

I think huawei has improved in the screen thingy. There only drawback is the Google pull out.

The best huawei set to buy at cheap price is that Huawei y6s phone. The Samsung A10 matches it closely but losses out due to huawei offering 64 gb memory and 3gb ram, while Samsung as usual will be offering 2gb and 32gb.

This is where i believe that Samsung needs to up its game. Get 3gb ram and offer more space in their phones and drop the prices abit.

If its going to be manufactured in Pakistan than prices need to be lowered for the 15k-20k segment.

It sucks what google did with Huawei. Might try the Xiaomi in future if its really good

There was also a Oppo plant being established in KP last year all that glitters is not gold

Big fan of Xiaomi but their surge in market share most likely linked to the Uyghur enslavement labour, same with Huawei among other major brands complicit in this genocide

Y6 2019 and 10 lite but Huawei is a huge player in the Uyghur oppression

Assembly in Pakistan may help to kick start more things getting done in Pakistan. It will create employment.

Will you prefer everything imported?

Or

Something getting assembled in Pakistan even if the price is the same.

employment is a separate thing, any kind of employment is good for us.

But im talking as a consumer here

The issue here is the pricing strategy. Companies manufacturing or assembling in Pakistan yet they charge high prices. I get it when its imported but when its being made in the country than prices need to go down a bit
Or else there is no point in assembling in that country than, sales would be the same if price isn't changed.

The supply of smart phones has never been an issue in the market.

iphone is made in china, or at least assembled there. However Chinese dont pay less than other countries for an iphone. The country where its being assembled get jobs, so they should be happy with that.

iphones in china are more expensive and that is due to high tax charged by the chinese govt as they want their people to buy local.

look i know it gets jobs, but as a consumer i want some benefits.

Q-mobile when it was operating used to allow shop keepers to give a 5percent discount if they wanted to as a bargain

And i want a girl who looks like a Pakistani model to be my wife.

Unfortunately the same way i am not entitled to that, neither are Pakistani consumers entitled to any discount.

The only people who should get a discount are the people involved in assembling the phones. That can be seen as a employee benefit.

Just like Rolce Royce or Bentley are not for everyone, same way flagship iPhones and Samsungs are not built for everyone. There are cheaper phones available for people with lower buying power.

Always happy to see positive news for AsianBloc. May this new development result in many jobs and prosperity. Amen

No one is talking about entitlement here.

I think it was back in 2016 when the S7 was 5000 rupees less expensive compared to what it was in USA.

If a product is to be manufactured here than hopefully that company won't charge the international price.

Anyways, hopefully Xiomi, Vivo, OPPO will keep the competition high here in Pakistan. Only the competition could make sure samsung keeps the prices stable or improve the specs of the low end phones

Except Xiaomi and Huawei make superior products to Samsung ... It's like BMW and Mercedes comparison

Samsung can charge what ever they want. If you can't afford ot then you need to look for alternatives. Even if the phone is produced in Pakistan, Samsung can set any pricing strategy that they see fit.

I would be surprised if Huawei survives in the Pakistani market now. With no google services and Huawei advocating for its own Huawei ID to be used i wonder if people would fall for it.

Another issue of Samsung in Pakistan was its repair cost. After a while the phone isn't the same value as its screen is. 10k for screen replacement plus getting the right screen is a hassle. Huawei screen replacement is cheap and easily available in the market.

Demand is in the hands of the conumers and it will dictate the price afterall.

When the pakistani assembled phones are available its going to be interesting if they will charge the same price that an imported Samsung cost (US Price), or would the price be a local one with a reduction.

Samsung is the market leader in Pakistan when it comes to mobiles. The main reason is people are brand concious in Pakistan and while Apple is too expensive they settle for Samsung. Most of the samsungs that are sold are are second hand phones or refurbished phones. Plus, the phone has great resale value. Even a broken phone could fetch you 5000 ruppees as its spare parts are used in other phones.

The drawback of Samsung is its repairing cost. The glass cost above 10k

There was a time Q-mobile was on the rise but that was because they were selling smart phones as cheap as 10k. But there phones had no resale value as Qmobile used to release a new smart phone every month. Warranty claim would result in a new phone as the old phone couldn't be repaired due to shortage of spare parts due to lack of supply of models.
Qmobile i think got shut down due to illegal practices. Wonder if they still operate.

Huawei is on the rise. People are still reluctant to use Huawei as they dont trust the brand yet. Companies like techno and lenovo have created a bad reputation for phones in the market as they slow down or start malfunctioning. People are reluctant to use them.

Huawei has also lost google services aswell, but the phone has good hardware at very low price. There phone is great for gaming, and taking pictures.

Samsung is bought cause of the brand, but its specs loses out to Huawei.

Oppo fluctuates.

While Samsung leads the market, OPPO and Huawei enjoy the same market share. Xoami is slowly rising.

Samsung is bought as second hand, while OPPO and Huawei is bought as new

I heard iPhone 11 Pro screen replacement costs 60k :inti

Someone got their Samsung (S10, I think) screen replaced for 30-40k.

I would hate to have one of those phones and then drop it…

Thanks a lot brother. I appreciate that.

Q phone I guess is regional? Like we used to have Micromax in India. It doesn't sell many phones now.

Surprised Amazon isn't market leader in eCommerce. If Darak is Pakistani company then it's wonderful. We had Flipkart but they had to sell out to Walmart eventually to compete with cash rich Amazon

Entertainment: I meant subscription bases services like Netflix , Prime, Disney

Very informative post bro, thanks.

Xiaomi is absolutely killing it in India but due to recent events with China, people are going back to Samsung as the only proper competitor to Chinese phones. If Samsung play their card right and launch attractive mid range phones they could get on top again in India.

People may laugh or whatever, but sentiments are genuinely strong against China right now. People are still buying Chinese stuff but not very happy about it as they used to be. A lot of my.friends and cousins who had formed a bond with OnePlus phones have moved to iPhones and Samsung S20

Streaming services providers are at war in India. Netflix offer Mobile only basic plan at Rs 199/month and Mobile/Laptop plan at Rs 299 or 350 I think. It must be among the cheapest anywhere.

Pakistan has so much potential economically. This country can move places rapidly given good honest governance over a decade minimum. Without a doubt every major company would love to cash on a huge market like Pakistan. Population wise, Pakistan must be among Top 7 or 10

Foreign companies opening up in pakistan have this huge problem in setting price.

The common mistake made here is international pricing gets set.

Be it electronics, food and beverage or even restaurant business.

Companies dont adopt the right pricing strategies here

In the past there werent competitors but now chinese competitors are changing the market.

Smart tvs of samsung were priced high, and then suddenly companies like ecostar and tcl came in with good quality smart tvs at cheaper rates.

In pakistan the only issue chinese companies face is building trust. Once that trust gets build in there is no going back

The reason behind daraz and olx succes in pakistan were again smart phones.

When pakistan got 3g and 4g(afghanistan got it before us), this change mobile phone industry. Q mobile also gets credit, while they were comitting fraud, by giving out cheap smart phones every pakistani was on the grid with 3g and 4g.

It didnt.matter if you were middle lower or upper clas. Everyone got a smart phone. Later on i think in 2017 daraz held a balck friday sale and they reported that most of the sales were done not only through smart phones but also through remote areas or smaller undeveloped cities and villiages.

Netflix hsnt tapped in correctly into pakistan as it requires credit card for access. Onoy middle and upper class got credit cards. Most of the students watch netflix through cracked illegal accounts available at cheap rates.

If netflix does its markrting right in pakistan, introduce a gift card system like how we have balance cards for phones, it has great potential here.

The prices of phones are largely the same all over the world with a little variance. Over the past couple of years, phone prices have shot up across the board in Pakistan because of the increase in taxes and duties. Before that, anyone who really wanted to get a good phone could just get it from outside Pakistan via a relative or friend.

Samsung’s pricing strategy in Pakistan is the same as it is all over the world. Check the rates in Europe and elsewhere and you’ll see that the Chinese companies offer better hardware in general for lower prices. Still, Samsung’s A series have held their own in the market. However, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series had a huge impact on the market last year. The Note 8 and 8 Pro were among the best-selling phones worldwide; they sold over 30 million units.

According to this article:

However, the company operates with a different business model as compared to companies like Samsung and Nokia: although it calls itself a mobile phone company, QMobile does not manufacture its own devices; instead, it imports them from vendors in China, and sells them under its own brand. The same phones are sold in India for example under the Micromax label.

Thanks, got it. Basically th Micromax of Pakistan
.

In India, this business model failed when Chinese manufacturers started selling under their own brand name as acceptance of Chinese phones as reliable gadgets grew in India. Way back in mid 2000s., Chinese phones were really poor in quality. Owning them was considered embarrassing.

Micromax helped build that trust and then floodgates opened in 2010s with no looking back.. China'a done so well in this regard

Other than Galaxy series, they're a nonsense.

Huawei is a huge player in China linked to its government so is being heavily punished with Google basically disabling them.

Are ZTE not popular in Pakistan?

ZTE devices are being used by PTCL. They used their internet modems. But ZTE will end up having a bad brand reputation if they keep on working with ptcl

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood on Wednesday said that after achieving “big success” in the manufacturing of mobile phones last year, Pakistan was now seeking expansion into exports.

Pakistan, a net importer of mobile phones prior to 2016, produced 22.12 million handsets during January-November 2021 and imported 9.95 million during the same period, data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shows.

In 2020, Pakistan’s import of mobile phones was 24.51 million compared to 13.05 million sets produced locally.

Various Chinese mobile phone manufacturers have played a key role in Pakistan’s production boom in 2021, according to the PTA.

Local manufacturing plants assembled 9.03 million smartphones while the number of 2G mobile phones was 13.09 million.

“I would say that our whole venture into manufacturing mobile phones has been a big success,” Dawood said in an interview with Arab News on Wednesday.

“It has been very successful because we now see that every month the number of mobile phones coming into the country is decreasing and the numbers that are being produced and sold locally is increasing.”

The PM’s aide said the record levels of local manufacturing were achieved under a new “conducive policy” introduced by the current government.

The Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy 2020 set a 49 per cent localization target by June 2023, including 10 per cent localization of parts of the motherboard and 10 per cent localization of batteries.

“We have developed a policy for local assembling of mobile phones … We are currently looking at becoming a world-class assembler of mobile phones,” Dawood said.

“We are right now concentrating on low-end mobile phone sets and we hope that soon we will be able to start getting into high-end phones with world-class companies.”

good news, what are the pakistani brands/ which brand is deemed to have the best specs? what are the specs for it and how much is it in £/ $.

also what happened to Samsung assembly plant idea in Pakistan

Pakistan has a low purchasing power, which means most of its imported goods are far too expensive for ordinary people. This is the reason why smartphones have struggled to penetrate the Pakistani market. Although 80% of the population possesses phones, just 20% of it owns a smartphone. The only way to realise widespread use of smartphones in the country is to manufacture them locally to cut the cost.

Xiaomi, a smartphone giant from China, started manufacturing smartphones in Pakistan on March 4 and this brings immense opportunities to Pakistan. Made in Pakistan Xiaomi products would also be exported to other countries, bringing export revenue into the country.

Such a massive factory would bring a lot of job opportunities to Pakistan. It is not only providing jobs to professionals but also presenting immense learning opportunities by working with the industry leader.

For Pakistan, cheap and affordable smartphones are key to becoming a digital country similar to China, which has used smartphones to make the life of its people easier and bring them income with apps like AliPay and WeChat. The digitalisation of currency has also helped curb issues related to the shadow economy. Widespread adoption of phones will lead related fields like mobile applications to earn more revenue in Pakistan and from abroad.
