Sarfaraz gets four-match suspension for breach of Anti-Racism Code

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been suspended for four matches after accepting that he was in breach of the ICC’s Anti-Racism Code for Participants following an incident that occurred during the second ODI against South Africa in Durban on Tuesday.
Sarfaraz aimed a comment at South Africa all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo which resulted in Sarfaraz being charged with an offence under the Code, namely;

“Engaging in any conduct (whether through the use of language, gestures or otherwise) which is likely to offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, disparage or vilify any reasonable person in the position of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, Umpire Support Personnel or any other person (including a spectator) on the basis of their race, religion, culture, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin.”

Sarfaraz will miss the remaining two matches of the ongoing ODI series as well as the first two matches of the T20I series to follow.

As per Article 7.3 of the Anti-Racism Code, Sarfaraz will also have to undergo an education programme to promote the understanding and awareness of issues directly relevant to the offence that he has committed. The ICC will work with the PCB to determine when and how this should take place.

The incident was initially reported by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees after he conducted initial investigations and spoke to both players after the match. Following a further investigation, the ICC General Counsel, Iain Higgins, then determined that the player had a case to answer under the Code, and the player was issued with a charge notice on 26 January.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: “The ICC has a zero-tolerance policy towards conduct of this nature. Sarfaraz has promptly admitted the offence, was regretful of his actions and has issued a public apology, so these factors were taken into account when determining an appropriate sanction.”

Shameful for Pakistan that PCB didn't take notice of racism.

As always ICC has to take matter in their hands. PCB never learns.

Its seem the Sa tour is over for him.Send him back to pak should not be part of last t20

I missed the toss.
What happened?Is he banned?
What did Malik say?

Says Shoaib Malik, the stand-in captain: "We wanted him, but the incident ... we all know what has happened. I don't want to comment about it. But they've given me this opportunity, and I want to do my best."

Great chance for Rizwan .just like shan masood he has been in great form recently

SHameful that PCB did not act on its own, still such a clueless corrupt board!!

This is Ehsan Mani's naya PCB!

This punishment is very deserving, if he did not intentionally "mean" aprtheid-era racism, calling him a kaala was casual racism that we condone and appreciate in our society. Many times to mock others who are not fair skinned.

Super glad ICC took action, very sad PCB did not.

Another sad thing is, Malik is captaining. The most ineligible cricketer in PAK right now.

Hafeez should have been doing it!!

Malik cannot play at the WC, please.

i am also surprise in 2017 against aus hafeez was captain .Hafeez is better than malik

Blessing in disguise, Rizwan can't do any worse.

Sarfarz is too strong to be replaced.Only some extra ordinary performance can put doubt for sarfarz place but i doubt poor kid rizwan can at maximium he will be just part of odi squad

How many times will ICC have to clean up the mess on behalf of PCB?

What an utter incompetent board PCB is!

Only time PCB ever was proactive in the leading the prosecution was in case of Sharjeel Khan & co. & that was primarily because of Najam Sethi.

Without him at helm, PCB is back to its shambolic ways.

If only PCB had suspended Sarfraz instead of begging SA cricket board and their players..

Nothing changed by IK and Mani!!

Same old shameless corrupt PCB.

They begged the Saffers to forgive him instead of banning Sarf proactively.

According to Bazid Khan on Ten Sports, It is PCB, NOT ICC, has decided not to play Sarfraz on a precautionary note. Not sure what to make up of it really. What kind of precaution are they taking?

Sarfaraz has been charged by ICC. Details haven't been revealed yet (officially).

Seems like Bazid Khan is as clueless as everyone then. Not sure why did he said that really and what he actually meant by precaution.

If true, that's extremely dumb! What will that achieve? And why did they let him play the last game then?

Please send him back home to end the misery .it will be dumb decision to held him till last t20

Guys stick to the topic please, and no need to share dubious news about 'begging' for forgiveness etc.

Well, most of of our society needs to undergo such an education program.

Oh Mani - your incompetence is being exposed every passing day.

You can't hide in the boardroom where you are so comfortably hidden.

Get in front of issues. By your lack of action on Sarfraz, you have caused yet more damage to PCB's reputation.

Now: Please do not make a dumb statement in favor of Sarfaraz. Being a populist, I won't consider it beyond you to curry favor with the Pakistani public. But know this - barring some apologists, Pakistani people understand what Sarfraz did wrong- even if you don't.

#WheresMani?

Any other cricket board would’ve took an action on the player before the ICC.

Always wondered why Pakistan don’t get sponsorships from big brands (Nike, Adidas etc), I think I’ve found my answer.

Hope ICC doesn't sue ICC for this. These 4 match ban must be for ODIs only - it's unfair for Sarfraz to miss out leading team against this SAF and then had to face the Aussies .... Satftaz must lead against SAF in T20s.

That's where you're absolutely wrong and mistaken.

Probably 5% of the population actually wanted Sarfraz punished. Rest of them were out in numbers defending and claiming how it's not racism.

The PCB gambled that the ICC would forgive Sarfaraz or let him off with a reprimand

Agreed. Imam, Shan, Rizwan and Shaheen are the players to invest on, even now it is not too late PCB should let go of Sarfi and someone like Hafeez can take care of captaincy in the WC.

Mani turning out to be worse than Ijaz Butt.

Wait for a statement by PCB or one of its employees crying how it's injustice and discrimination against PAK.

Heck, the ex cricketers are surely gonna be on TV soon crying.

Mani from day 1 look sneaky and irresponsible, so I never had high hopes for him. But what he did was even worse.

Should have been 4 odi , i don't care about t-20 Mickey mouse cricket it would have allowed Pakistan to try out new players which otherwise inzi would never do he just wants series wins and no team development

Not sure. Public sentiment after oval gate and ball tampering was very different to now.

Looks like ICC waited for few days expecting PCB to take action. But since PCB took none and shamelessly allow Sarfi to play the last match, ICC had to intervene.

Should have been banned for at least 6 months if not for a year like Smith and warner.

Aaah no.

Again you guys should read up before coming up with ur own conclusions.

Pcb had proposed to ban sarfraz for 4 games.

They asked ICC and they said no.

PCB is rightly angry at ICC that after a few days later the ICC ban him themselves.

This made PCB look bad.
To volunteering in placing a ban on such matters every board needs to have an ICC representative overlooking.

Cricinfo states it offered 2 games not 4 which is less than minimum penalty.

CA didn't need permission from ICC before suspending players

BCCI didn't need permission from ICC before suspending players.

PCB also didn't need permission from ICC before taking action. If PCB wanted to suspend for 4 matches, they should have done that immediately.

so PCB was kind of looking for a deal to save a racist national team captain? Pathetic.
