Shoaib Akhtar speaking on TV:

"We had said this before and we all knew that Pakistan would struggle in NZ"

"I never expected Pakistan bowling to get in rythm from the word go and start producing wonders straightaway"

"Both Rumman Raees and Mohammad Amir took their time to get going and also got hit for a few"

"Where it really hurts is to see Pakistan batting unable to put up a fightback"

"People say that there is a problem with our technique, if that is the case, how did Fakhar Zaman score so many runs today?"

"its not about undue criticism but it so happens that your poor batting techniques can be exposed and you have to manage that"

"You have to show courage at the crease and stay on the wicket and score just like Fakhar Zaman did today"

"PCB needs to draw the line and know where to stop players from participating in other leagues etc"

"Who amongst our players do we need to hold back and pay extra money and make them play domestic cricket"

"We knew this was a tough tour of NZ, we should have prepared better our batting line-up better for this tour"

"Sarfaraz has not been batting up the order for a few months now and he also has some fitness issues"

"He also dropped a crucial catch of KW who was batting at 26 at that point and then went on to score 115 and set up a huge target"

"The captain has a huge responsibility - he has to make decisions and also be fit; secondly, he has to have the ability to win matches on his own"

"If he doesn't bat up the order than we have a problem"

"Another issue is if Babar Azam cannot anchor the innings as an ODI player than we have a big problem"

"Babar Azam wasnt sure about the length of the delivery (reason for his dismissal) - I really think Pakistan should have prepared better than what they have done"

"We are very hasty in taking reviews"

"Its to do with cricket sense, as experienced players will know, one gets a feel of whether the ball was hitting the stump or not"

"One has a gift for such things - either one has it or they dont"

"Hafeez always is hasty in taking reviews, although I dont want to mention his name"

"If you feel you are in bad form and the review will save you in batting then that is not on and even ALLAH wont help you in that"

"You cannot become a good OD bowler by bowling well for 4 overs and the same applies to OD and Tests"

"We have been spared some embarrassment due to rain and fact that Fakhar played a bit, otherwise we would have been out for around 100"

"No need to make wholesale changes but we need to change our approach for the next game"

"Pak batting line up has to learn to stay on the crease, they can atleast score 3 runs an over - cant they?"

"We have to give 240+ to our bowling line up to defend"

"I expect Pakistan bowling to improve itself - if Tim Southee can swing the ball, then so can Amir and Rumman"

Think Sarfaraz's time may be running out if Pak lose ODI series

Don't forget his pathetic keeping. That is why we need to develop a back up.

Looks like Sarfaraz has been enjoying the Champions Trophy win a bit too much.

When I saw him at the toss yesterday it was pretty clear that he did not look in peak shape.

so how is it that he is passing fitness tests? Guess he is still nimble but fitness and shape go hand in hand

Undoubtedly the worst player in the world to captain a team in all formats, excluding associates of course.

Epitomizes mediocrity.

M just asking I don't know about that .but when I saw him yesterday look clearly unfit .

I agree with you. Sarfraz and Immad are quite unfit with grown bellies and I really wonder how they past these fitness tests.

Yeah lets give the captaincy back to acha bacha Azhar Ali.... we were conquering new frontiers in his prosperous tenure.

khancha for being the captain of the champion team and No. 1 ranked bowler in a format respectively

I think its the opposite, Sarfraz clearly has lost some weight and that is affecting his balance. He looks leaner than before anyone who has seen the CT/ Srilankan series will tell you that

Anybody care to tell us what this even means?

How is that possible? He will captain till the World Cup

Sarfraz's form is a worry, not scoring enough runs for a last year or so in any format.

Pakistani local delicacies are just too good. Healthy nutritious food has to be made delicious by excellent cooks, the problem is the shortage of world class cooks. There was a reason why Floyd Mayweather jr used to pay his cook $1000 per meal because she made the healthy stuff so delicious to consume.

Then how he passed yo- yo test ?? This test not mandatory for every Pak player or what???

Well by all accounts the yoyo tests have been made tougher.

Maybe the tests now incorporate eating 20 kebabs in 5 minutes.

Sarfaraz does seem to be a bit over weight. His captaincy is safe for now after all it has been ages since we last played. After NZ the next series will also be in a few months. If anyone recognises an unfit player it will be a Shoaib Akhtar as he himself was always unfit.

Its really a unique problem. A captain who is winning you series after series but isnt performing himself in his primary role of a keeper batsman.

The question is, can you remove sarfaraz without lowering the quality of team performance? Is he dispensable?

We're a below par team with ridiculous highs.

What was the state of our side when we were captained by arguably the greatest Pakistani batsman of all time? Utter disaster, one of the worst in terms of on field decisions. Anyone remember the Oval Fiasco? We were a tableeghi jamat pretending to be a playing XI

The second greatest batting captain of all time after Inzi in that era had us defending on the boundaries with Australia 9 down in the Sydney test.

Don't think captaincy can change the fortunes alot, always believed in that. I mean it can change in a jiffy in a short tournament like CT. But all these misgivings in our team are a given there is nothing new to this.

Pretty sure everyone knows that we are poor chasers

If anyone is in any doubt of that they haven't been following Pakistan cricket for a while.

What's the surprising part here?

Once the total went over 270/280 the shoulders dropped, the body language got more negative.

He needs to bat up the order. His fitness is definitely a concern but his batting looks flat.

I said this during the game in the commentary thread, and his fan boys started crying lol.

The guy is management's puppet. Tactically he in unaware; out of form with the bat and dropped a sitter after having a go at his players.

That's the real point.he alway shouting on every player who's just missed a ball or something else but aways ignore own fault .just before he dropped that catch he shouting continuously more than 2 guys and suddenly lose own concentration and dropped that sitter.

Shoaib wasn't unfit - he was doing a particular job that broke his body, once he was in his late 20s; otherwise from 1998 to 2002 he hardly broke down in matches. It takes fitness of highest level to reach 150KM+ and guy used to maintain that as average pace for a 15 over work load. I can recall one Test at UAE against WI (2002?), when on Day 5 morning he bowled 6 overs at one go in OCT heat, 5 of them maidens and apart from deliberate slower ones, his lowest speed was 150KM or so. In his 30s, after 4 days work, on Day 5 against ENG (2005 home series), he bowled like wind to win Multan & Lahore Test.

What he suffered was stress fractures, knee/ankle injuries, torn muscles and other injuries as a result of that extreme work load; but guy is probably fitter than Sarfraz right now!!!!

agreed.let these pp experts talk. They do not know how much it takes to be a 150kph fast bowler.

I doubt he can manage the bounce and swing with the new ball that's why he hides behind top 5 so he comes to bat when spinners and medium pacers are bowling.

I guess as a batsman you can get away with a little bit of extra weight, but when you are the wicket-keeper you need to be the most agile person in the team.

I'm no fitness guru, but it's obvious Sarfaraz at the moment looks overweight and not in great shape. If we can see this, can the likes of Mickey Arthur and the other coaching staff not see it, or are they turning a blind eye to it.

I am sure they see it. But by pakistan standards it would be disruptive to bench the captain for being overweight/unfit. If the results in this series dont go well, I expect the coaching staff to be quite vocal.

Zulfiqar Babar was a fit cricketer, no? Somehow he represented Pakistan a lot and was a match winner

Not rocket science to see some of these carrying bit of a belly and some being skinny with lack of much muscle around.

More unfit, waste of space he is... the more control Mickey has overall.

If he was fit, competent and performing well, Mickey would not have the unchallenged power he has now.....

He does need to work on his fitness. He seemed a bit out of shape during the 1st ODI. I hope he goes and loses a few.

Bro.....Why do you think that Mickey and Sarfraz are some villanous characters that are part of an elaborate plan to down Pakistan Cricket? I mean give the guy a break. Just try to remember the Australian series around this time last year, and you will know how much he has changed the culture of the team. With Pak's habit to ease down after wins and to crumble under pressure, we need a Cap like Sarfraz to keep them in check and rile them up. Just look at what he said to Amir after he was bowling a defensive short of a length line last game. He is very very tactically aware and knows how to handle his players. And for all those saying that he can't play pace and swing, you just have to look back at the 2016 series against England. England effectively blew us away in that series and Sarfraz was highest runscorer from both sides and also made 100 after Pak being 12-3 with all our so called "technically correct" players failing to lay bat against in-form Woakes and Wood. Also, it baffles me how after just one loss after a consecutive winning streak of 9 (which includes an ICC trophy) we all just turned our bakcs on him. Let me say this with confidence, Sarfraz is the best keeper-batsman we have in Pakistan.

Coming from Mr Fitness himself, whose endless career injury spells may have been less in number and been more swiftly resolved without all of the biryanis, burgers, booze and cigs.

at his peak he was probably the most fittest player in the squad. He was injury prone but he worked very hard on his fitness all the time.

This is the problem though.

Most other teams and Boards and management would use the captain as an example if he was not fit enough.

Can anyone tell - exactly what's Sarfraz's height & weight is? Height I guess is around 170 CM (5'7").

Almost got run out - moments later out. Forget fitness issues, he's simply struggling at top level cricket.

fitness is the main reason he is struggling; did you see how late he was on the 2nd runs as compared to Hafeez? Fitness has affected every facet of his game

Above pictures are Sarfaraz during his hundred in England in 2016.

He looks a lot fitter (comparatively) in these pictures.

If mediocrity means leading your team to a tournament win and defying all expectations then heck, most captains would like to be "medicore".

Few month back he won Champions Trophy , now swords are out , have patience he is good captain , NZ series is not easy for any team specially sub-continent team

Sarfraz has unfortunately been out of form for a while now.

Maybe he was just in a purple patch and he is back to normal.

He was a match winner in tests in UAE during Misbah's captaincy.

I am clearly talking about his skills as a player and not his captaincy. What was his performance as a player in the Champions Trophy? He didn’t even have the guts to come ahead of Imad in the Champions Trophy Final and flog the dead horse.

Instead, he allowed Imad to waste deliveries and cost Pakistan 10-15 runs.

In the Sri Lanka game, he was crapping his pants and Sri Lanka dropped two dollies. Amir looked far more assure with the bat.

Sarfraz is highly overrated. He is in the team due to the CT final result and expect him to lead the Pakistan team for another 2 years. The real CT match winner for me is Amir.

All those instances you listed of him performing poorly are true but we can't look at him as a player and his performances in a vacuum. He is clearly our of form since the champions trophy but up until the tour of england in 2016 he was the same old sarfraz that misbah once dubbed as the "oxygen of the team". He is a gutsy player who should find form soon enough. Managing captaincy, wicketkeeping and batting isnt easy for any player but he has been able to provide largely desirable results for his team so far. As for Imad being sent up the order before sarfraz, i reckon its because Imad definitely has the ability to slog more on his day than Sarfraz, but i agree that when it's a the time to rebuild an innings, sarfraz should come ahead of Imad.

Unfortunately being the captain of the Pakistan team gives you a long rope. I don't think we'll see Sarfraz being dropped from the team anytime soon even if we lose some series along the way.

I have never been enthused by his captaincy despite our CT win. I will not take any credit away from Sarfraz since he was the captain of our CT win so he deserves respect and applause for it but overall I have never found him to be a good tactician. Plus a captain loses his hold on the team if he cannot elevate his performances. The best captains in the world have all raised their performances as compared to when they were only a team player. Imran, Misbah, Waugh, Graeme Smith, Steve Smith, Kohli have all led from the front with their performances which is why their team responded in kind. With Sarfraz, his performances as a player has declined and that's never good for a captain in charge.

The basis of our CT victory was our bowling who kept teams under 240. That is when our batting relieved itself of undue pressure and went about chasing at their own pace without fear of a burgeoning run rate. The bowlers were all on form and in the CT final we had an exceptional batting performance (but that was an exception rather than the rule).

If we have to become a good ODI side, our batting will have to improve leaps and bound. We cannot continue with Azhar and with the World Cup only 1.5 years away, we need to find a reliable opener who can score a 50 off 30 on his good day while on his average day can score a 50 off 55. Azhar even on his supreme day can't score a 50 off 30. And Imam-ul-Haq is not the answer. If Sarfraz has to remain in the team, I would suggest him to open the innings. The good thing about Sarfraz is he looks to score quick and given the fact that he is not a power hitter, I believe it will help him to score boundaries if the field is in rather than out. And he averages about 43 as an opener so why not.

Think Sarfaraz's time may be running out if Pak lose ODI series

I guess he is still gonna be our LOI captain for sometime i.e world cup 2019.

I we lose this series it will be his first limited over series loss as captain so I think it would be unfair with him to discard him so early.

As a batsman I think he should play in the top five positions, ideally 2 down or 3 down. 4 down is supposed to be for someone who can hit it big at the end which Sarfaraz is not capable of however, he is very good at strike rotation so he should bat bit up the order.

Noticed on a couple of occasions today where the ball has gone deep into the field and the batsmen have run 2 yet Sarfraz has still not bothered to getto the stumps to collect the throw from the fielder.

Just like Kohli in the final..

That may or may not be true, but the Champions Trophy Final is not going to define Kohli’s career. Apart from Pakistani fans who are irrelevant, no one will remember Kohli’s career for the Champions Trophy Final.

He will be remembered as one of the greatest cricketers of all time and possibly, the greatest Limited Overs batsman ever.

On the other hand, Sarfraz is going to be remembered as a mediocre player who captained Pakistan to a Champions trophy win without contributing as a player.

He was a nervous wreck and Sri Lanka dropped two dollies. Amir looked more confident than him at the crease.

The sun shone on Sarfraz in June and God had to bless him with this fluke glory. He is an okay captain and a rubbish player, but he was destined to win the Champions Trophy as captain.

People need to stop slinging mud at Kohli in order to defend Sarfraz. Compare Sarfraz to someone of his own stature, caliber and legacy.

Well Kohli may or not be remembered for his failiure as a player, but what I'm pointing to is not his ability to bat as a player in the side, but he failed as a captain to stop the flow of runs. He couldn't perform as a captain, and clearly Dhoni was captaining the side when Kohli ran out of ideas to counter Fakhar's onslaught.

That for me is shameful, its like a kid asking his parents because he is incapable of handling the pressure of the day.... Signs of an incompetent captain

That for me is a bigger failure, someone who was gonna captain the side, and were outright favorites to win the tournament, but lost to minnows who had who was just 6 months into the job, he was better at maneuvering his bowlers not just in the final but throughout the tournament.

For me it was more a captain vs captain debate. Kohli failed as captain, Sarfraz didn't put one step wrong in his planning.

Matches are usually credited to managers in football, and captains in Cricket. Sarf out thought, out smarted Kohli in every department.

Yes he was better for a day. However, the problem is that Kohli will go on to achieve greater things, while Sarfraz will live off that match for the rest of his career.

His biggest achievement is bringing the choke out an invincible England at home.

Not the CT final.

Even Kohli said everyone knows its gonna be a repeat of 2013 'India vs England' final.

Just like Imran Khan and Younis Khan.

Imran was already a legendary captain, but the World Cup win was a cherry on top.

Younis is remembered for his successful Test career and not the WT20.

The pitch played a big role in England’s demise. Also, there is not a single person in Pakistan who considered beating England a bigger achievement than beating India in the final.

For our fans, nothing is better than beating India. While they have moved on and have a legitimate rivalry with Australia now, Pakistan cricket is still stuck with India and considers them as their arch rivals.

England was the team to beat. It was a bigger hurdle than the Indians for me personally. Looking at their lineups and how the same team scored 400 against us in a series just a year ago.

I can't blame the pitch since it didn't affect us the same way.

When you beat the home side, you more often than not win the final as well.

Captaincy wise, Sarf beating England was a bigger deal, they were familiar with the conditions, could beat us with one hand tied behind their backs as was the case in the ODI series.

Emotion wise, pure banter wise there is no comparison to Indians victory, plus its a final. But I still rate Englands victory as a bigger and more vital one.

he is an excellent strike rotator, something which pakistan lacks big. He stood not out and was rotating strike beautifully.

Hafeez is pathetic. I don't why he is in the team. What he did in previous 3 World Cups, what he did in major ICC tournaments, what he did in foreign tours. Still being selected again and again.

Try better player who rotate strikes, Fawad Alam, Saad Ali, Asad Shafiq, Saud Shakeel. By dropping Hafeez & Malik (enough is enough).

Babar had bad luck, Sarfraz stood not out.

See how NZ played under enormous quality bowling, single - double and strike rotation. While Pakistanis were block each ball, same what they did in 2011 Semi final, same they do every time.

Wow that's some stretch... The best player of spin is simply clueless against spinners on this tour
