Babar Azam speaking on TV after end of 3rd ODI:

"Firstly thanks to the Almighty. I thought the openers batted really well and gave us momentum and I feel that continued that and batted well."

"When we lost quick wickets I was saying to the players to build partnerships. I want to give credit to Hassan Ali who came in and batted really well and he made the difference in the last 2 overs."

"We were surprised that South Africa bowled spinners so much especially in the latter stages. But we were prepared for anything and knew the pitch would take spin. Credit to our boys the way they played and the way we won the match."

"This was an important series for us and to win away in South Africa gives us a lot of confidence individually and as a group. We hope that we can continue the momentum into the T20I series."

Babar Azam speaking to the press after the 2-1 series win vs South Africa:

Sarfaraz's selection for the 3rd ODI

"The only thought behind this selection was the fact that we had lot of experience in Sarfaraz sitting on the bench and we wanted to utlize that; Also our middle-order was struggling a bit, which is why we brought in Sarfaraz"

"Sarfaraz Ahmed is in the team with us because we trust in his abilities, and we will try and utilize him in ODIs as a wicket-keeper and batsman at the number 5 position as it suits him best; That is also the position which needs a batsman to move the innings and that is what we were lacking in the previous 2 matches where the middle order was really struggling"

Review of the Series and looking ahead to England ODIs

"I am very confident about how our ODI team is shaping up; Whenever we get a good start then things move on well after that; Yes, our middle-order struggled but not that much; Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq gave a good start to the innings and I made sure I carried on with that momentum and made sure I bat as long as possible and finish it off well"

Satisfied with the performance of the top-order and concerns about the middle order

"Its good to see our top-order performed well and against a good side which gives you a lot of confidence but we will see how we can fill in the gap in the middle-order; This is also the reason why we played Sarfaraz today because he is our senior player and as able to move the innings along"

On becoming number one ODI batsman

"I try and enjoy my cricket and do what's best for the team"

Seems to be Moin Khan - Rashid Latif all over again.

Pakistan’s best preferred top 4:

1. Fakhar
2. Imam
3. Babar
4. Harris (when fit)

Name a better No.5 candidate than Sarfaraz....I’ll wait.

Yes, our middle-order struggled but not that much

Was he watching/playing in the same series as the rest of us? :)

Pak is where India was pre and during WC 2019. Top 3 going great with the middle order struggling. It's a problem that will be resolved over time. Not a great concern as long as top 3 keep performing.

Umar Akmal, Imad Wasim, Haider Ali (untested), Malik (retired), Hafeez (retired). I could name more but here are some.

Name me a better cheerleader than Sarfraz...and I can't wait!!

We desperately need some middle order options for 4, 5, and 6.

Sarfaraz isn't a long-term solution to the problem we're facing.

At four, I think either Haris Sohail or Saud Shakeel. Both will suffice.

At five is a big question. We need someone who can bat at a higher strike rate if required, and perhaps a possible option could either be Haider Ali or Sohaib Maqsood.

At six, I think we need to play Imad Wasim, he's far better at that role. Faheem and Hasan would make for a good #7 and #8 respectively.

I don't get this obsession with trying to fit Sarfaraz in the middle order.

I wonder what Rizwan thinks of this or what Babar thinks about it.

You have a wicket-keeper in good form, starting to become one of the key players and then they replace him from his primary role.

Waste of a spot.

Should have fielded Haider Ali or given Danish Aziz another chance. In the future Saud Shakeel can be tried or Haris Sohail be recalled.

I rather play Geoffrey Boycott’s mom than the scardey Danish Aziz. This dude can handle short of length at all and has terrible body language. I dont mind the low scores but Danish was ugly as hell in the two outings.

I would rather give a new lad a fair run than selecting Asif Ali or Sarfraz of whom we already know what they are capable of.

If Saud Shakeel had been fit or Agha Salman been there things would have been different. Considering the fact that Haider Ali wasn't available.

The way Sarfaraz has improved his fitness and has tried to prove his form in domestic circuit is commendable but, Pak will have to be realistic. By the upcoming ODI WC Sarfaraz will be around 35 and is not the kind of batsman Pak is missing in the weaponry.

There are other batsmen who can hold the innings together, Pak need a specialist batsman here who can not only rotate the strike but also has the ability to take on the bowlers when required (Haris was perfect in that role in WC19 but, alas his fitness and lack of self drive). Someone like Saud Shakeel can be given a run in the hope that he can fill the shoes, he has decent amount of domestic experience with an outstanding record and has quite a few things to like about him.

Sarfaraz is a really decent keeper batsman but, unfortunately I dont think Pak can afford two keepers as its not like both of them are a dynamic duo of Buttler and Bairstow making their claim. I think Rizwan is one of the players considered in the core group of Pak players when we take into account 3 formats and if he is the main choice for the coming years than in my opinion Sarfaraz cant play in the batting lineup which Pak have as he is neither a long term option nor provides anything different to the overall batting lineup.

I honestly can’t tell if you are making a case for or against Sarfaraz. Expect Haider Ali, the choices are either terrible, retired or mentally unfit.

Does not make any sense , why Sarfraz played and Haider didn't , no idea, that's why I will celebrate when Misbah is kicked out , can;t wait.

Hope you're talking about Mohammad Haris , Peshawar's young wicket keeper batsman, not the fast aging and smoking and forever unfit one , who could not trouble the scorer in the recent NZL our.

Saud Shakeel, Haider Ali or even Saad Ali would be better picks than Sarfaraz for the #5 spot. I like Sarfaraz but there is no place for him in the team unless Rizwan losses form or fitness.

Once we play England, NZ or Aus in ODIs are poor options in batting positions 5/6/7

Pakistan management went from going to try two batsmen in 5/6 positions to a keeper and all rounder. Its just thoughtless and illogical selections to say the least.

Ive no idea what they are doing with sarfraz

Why r they trying to fit a square peg in a round hole?

He doesnt fit into this team Its rizwan or him and rizwan is the much better option

We have a keeper, we should be looking for some hard hitting batsmen finishers at 5 and 6 Not someone whos another keeper, cant hit big, his own form has steadily been on the decline for years and frankly has been dropped for 18 months cos he wasnt any good

Why r they backing him all of a sudden over a young batsman with potentially a higher ceiling?

sharjeel
Fakhar
babar
sohail
sarfaraz/rizwan
hafeez (He is a clean hitter lower down the order)
Imad
Shadab
faheem
Hasan Ali
shaheen/ amir

Sarfraz is not the answer for the middle order, he will be 35/36 in 2023.

Babar seems to really want to rely on experience players. It gives me the impression he doesn't really wanna have to manage younger players .

Sarfraz was a specialist captain, now hes a specialist cheerleader. Bravo.

Are you not making the age old error of mixing formats?

In the 6 ODI's since the last world cup, he is averaging 11.17, including 3 games against the mighty Zimbabwe. All of which have been in the past 6 months, when he is supposedly in form.

On that basis, I wouldn't say it's an obsession as such. The move to pick Sarfaraz was justified - he did look better with the bat and his strike rotation is a key skill missing in the middle order.

Babar needs a reality check to be honest..

If they really want to fit Sarfaraz in the team than it's better to let Fakhar and Rizwan open as we all know keeping is a difficult job if Sarfaraz is settling in the team again so let Rizwan open with Fakhar..

1) Fakhar Zaman
2) Muhammad Rizwan
3) Babar Azam
4) Haris Sohail (when fit) or Anyone from domestic who is a good middle order Batsman
5) Sarfaraz Ahmed
6) Haider Ali
7) Muhammad Nawaz/Shadab Khan
8) Hasan Ali
9) Usman Qadir
10) Shaheen Shah Afridi
11) Haris Rauf

Haris needs to spend time in domestic hes a good talent and can play all round the wicket.in a year or so i want him part of the t20 and odis squad.

When there was a vote regarding who should play in the middle order, Babar voted for Sarfaraz.

The problem he then had was that Sarfaraz couldn't exactly be put in the outfield and had to be given the gloves.
