"Sarfaraz is a good captain but sometimes his aggression puts bowlers on the back foot" : Wahab Riaz

Pakistan’s discarded fast bowler Wahab Riaz aimed a spot in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, slated to start from May 30 in England and Wales.

“As a cricketer, you always target World Cup and it’s disappointing for me that I will not be a part of this year’s mega event,” said Wahab while talking to the ARY News exclusively.

Wahab said that as a player his job was to perform well and rest depends on the selectors and hopes that the team management has better plans for an all-important tournament. “I have tried to perform whenever gets an opportunity. If you see my record then I have taken wickets in the UAE where the conditions don’t suit to the fast bowlers,” he said.

While commenting on Pakistan’s selected squad for the World Cup, Wahab said that the squad lacks experience which might create problems for the team in England. “In my opinion experience player can give you an edge in bigger tournaments,” said Wahab who thinks that Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez have to play an important role in the mega event.

The left-arm pacer added that the team should have picked a batsman like Umar Akmal who can give them some depth in the batting order. “You need someone at lower middle order batting who can hit some quick runs in a pressure situation or in short play a finisher’s role,” he said.

Wahab pointed out that Sarfraz’s aggression on the field sometimes makes the situation difficult for the bowlers. “Sarfraz is a good captain but sometimes his aggression put bowlers on the back foot,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Wahab has played 27 Tests, 79 ODIs and 27 T20Is for Pakistan. His spells in World Cup 2011, 2015 against India and Australia respectively gave him hype among the cricket fraternity.

He is right. When a bowler is being milked for runs, then there is no point in having an attacking field. Sometimes bowlers could bowl better with a defensive field. Example Shahid Afridi.

Also, our pacers use to rely heavily on Ajmal and Hafeez. A match where the target would be 250, hafeez would often end up bowling at an economy of 4, and thats when the score card pressure starts to affect the opposition.

Now, the job of containing runs is gone to Imad waseem, but when IMad is not playing, then the bowling line up doesnt look good interms of saving runs.

Also, as for the senior players.

Experience doesnt matter if you are out of form. Yes maybe your experience could help off the field, but if 60 runs are required from 10 overs and you are out of form, then what is to be done with your experience?

Best example is Younis Khan. The guy had experience, but was a joke of a batsmen in odi cricket.

Wahab was a good bowler, but he cant take wickets anymore. Same is the case of amir.

Remember Umar Gul, at one time he was our best bowler, but he lost his form. Now just for the sake of experiene we cant play him in the 2019 world cup.

Nope Sarfraz’s captaincy is still far too defensive. Perhaps it’s not to Wahab’s liking because obviously because it isn’t at Misbah’s level because we all know he took defensive captaincy to a whole new level :))

Thank God wahab riaz isn't playing against england or else 500 would have been crossed and his personal record would have been broken.

Always me me me in PAK cricket. When did he win PAK a game in white ball cricket?

I wish some 1 keeps showing him that ball he bowled to S smith!

During the CT after he got dropped PAK bowling did a lot better.

Besides how can you ask for UA as a finisher? He got 5 chances just a few weeks ago and guess what, failed 5 times.

Both are absolute savage posts. :yk

Wahab Riaz destroyed. Should retire from international cricket.

How experienced was he when replaced Shoaib Akhtar in the 2011 WC semi?

Wahab has been a horrible bowler throughout his career. He had a small purple patch which last like 3 games. Overall, he's been like Sami a wayward bowler who gets taken to the cleaners each and every game. Shouldn't be anywhere near the national team.

I have seen Captains criticised for being too defensive but this is a 1st- too attacking. When did this happen?

What have Sarfraz sympathisers got to say about this ? they always make excuses for their obese hero

I am not sure he meant aggression in the field settings, may be he is talking about his aggression towards to bowler when he doesnt ball the right line and according to the field.

I think this might help with young bowlers like Shaheen, Shadab and Hasnain but with regards to bowler like Hassan, Junaid, Amir I dont think after playing so much cricket they need to be told where to bowl. If they are not bowling well just take them out of the attack and bring them back after few overs.

What the hell is this obsession with Umar Akmal? Every two bit analyst wants Akmal in the team. Did they not watch the series against Australia? Does the Akmal family have blackmail over Pakistani cricketers and analysts? This kind of crap analysis makes me question the rest of anything they end up saying.
